2026 Australia Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

Many people think that a trip to Australia requires a huge budget. I'll share the real costs of our 15-night trip. ✈️ Flight costs 84,000 rubles per person from Moscow to Melbourne and back from Sydney to Moscow on China Airlines with a layover in Chengdu. I bought the tickets on trip.com. 🏠 Accommodation costs around 140,000 rubles. We rented a self-catering apartment in Melbourne and stayed in hotels on the way to Sydney. In Sydney, I chose an apartment in a building with a pool on booking.com. By city:📍 Melbourne — 5 nights: ₽56,698📍 Malua Bay — 1 night: ₽7,582📍 Painesville — 1 night: ₽11,381📍 Sydney — 8 nights: USD 775 🚗 Car rental — USD 1,200 for 16 days. We picked up the car in Melbourne and returned it in Sydney. The price included full insurance and a second driver. Important: returning the car in another city approximately doubles the rental price. ⛽ Gasoline: USD 278🛣 Toll roads, parking, and late return fee: USD 206 🍽 Food. We mostly cooked breakfast and dinner at home, which saved us a lot of money. We stopped for a snack during the day. On average, lunch per person cost around $15-20. In total, we spent about $1,120 on restaurants and groceries for four people over 16 days. 🐧 Tours and Entertainment: A big plus of Australia is that you can see so many incredible places for free, especially if you travel by car. The only paid activity we chose was to see the penguins in Melbourne—1,730 rubles. I bought the ticket on trip.com. 💡 In the end, Australia wasn't as inaccessible as it seemed. The biggest expenses are flights, accommodation, and car rental. But nature, beaches, national parks, and stunning views are often accessible completely free of charge. And of course, traveling in a group is cheaper, since the cost of renting a car and apartment is shared. If you're dreaming of Australia, the key is to plan your route 🇦🇺✨

#underratedspots Everyone talks about Sydney and Melbourne when Australia comes up, but after finally visiting Brisbane this August, I honestly have to say — Brisbane deserves so much more attention. I came here wanting to see the city for myself, and I ended up falling in love with its relaxed charm. The Brisbane River, beautiful riverbanks, modern and historic skylines, incredible bridges, lush parks and golden sunsets gave me so many moments I’ll remember. 🌅🌉 What made it even more special was experiencing it with my loved one. We walked around the city, watched sunsets together, enjoyed the river views and simply soaked up the atmosphere without constantly rushing from one attraction to another. I also loved the city vibe. People felt friendly, the city felt clean and spacious, and there was this relaxed energy that made exploring Brisbane so easy. Maybe Brisbane doesn’t shout for attention like Sydney or Melbourne. It doesn’t need to. Its beauty slowly reveals itself when you take the time to walk, explore and actually experience it. It's almost too beautiful to be true! 🦘🌿 The trail itself is super chill and easy. The views are wide open and the air is so fresh—perfect for a weekend walk or hike with the fam to spot some roos. But seriously, you gotta come on a sunny day! The layers of green grass and blue sky look amazing in the sun; it’s honestly a totally different vibe if it’s cloudy. You don't need to drive far from Melb to find such healing views. Only about a 30-minute drive from the heart of Gold Coast, Snapper Rocks is definitely worth adding to your Gold Coast itinerary! Even the journey there was interesting! On our way to Snapper Rocks, I spotted so many beautiful classic cars on the road. 🚗✨ They were so cool and incredibly well maintained — some looked like they had just come out of a classic movie! I really couldn’t control myself and had to snap a few photos whenever I had the chance. 😂📸 It made the drive itself part of the experience. When we arrived, we were welcomed by a clear blue sky, beautiful blue ocean, fresh sea breeze and amazing coastal views. 🌊💙 It was super windy, but that made the atmosphere even more refreshing. We were also lucky to visit during low tide, so I could walk down onto the rocks and spend some time there, enjoying the ocean right in front of me. 🪨🌊 Blue sky above, waves beside me and such a beautiful view, of course, I couldn’t leave without taking plenty of selfies! 😂📸 Even though it was winter, don’t underestimate the Australian sunshine! ☀️ The UV can still be very strong, and I actually got a little sunburnt. 😅 But nothing could stop me from enjoying this beautiful place! 💡 Little tips: Apply plenty of sunblock even during winter, bring a cap and sunglasses. A short stop, but definitely worth the drive. A brief history 📜 In 1802, British navigator Matthew Flinders climbed to the highest point of the island and spotted "a small lake of a pink colour." It was named after crew member William Hillier, who died during the expedition. Later, in 1889, salt mining was attempted here, but the project failed because the salt proved unfit for consumption. Among them: the algae Dunaliella salina, which produces a red pigment to protect itself from the sun, and the bacterium Salinibacter ruber, which creates orange-red hues. Together, they create that unique palette. The biggest mystery: In other pink lakes, the colour changes with the seasons. But Lake Hillier stays the same shade of pink all year round and even if you pour it into a jar, it doesn't lose its colour. That makes it truly unique, even among other pink lakes. Finally made it to Shanghai. I was here the year before last and have been wanting to come back, and this time I finally made it happen. Let me talk about two places I really like: Yuyuan Road and Zhangyuan. Walking along Yuyuan Road when it's shady is so comfortable. There's a coffee shop in the middle section that I really like; it's so chill as a resting spot in between~ Now, let me talk about some small memories from the trip ✈️ This time I flew Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong. Flying with them is still more comfortable and thoughtful—they have headrests, pillows, small blankets, charging ports, and everything. Plus, the in-flight entertainment is very extensive, with some newer options too~ A memorable moment was watching a new movie and the Cathay Pacific 80th-anniversary video on the plane. Turns out they are 80 years old this year. The video had some old photos and historical footage. After watching it, I really felt like it's an airline with a story. It also stirred up some memories of when I went to Australia alone to learn to fly the year before last. Seeing so many people chasing their dreams in the video made me feel a bit emotional, because I have truly experienced that difficult yet happy time myself, so I wanted to specifically mention this special memory here~ And the in-flight meal I was looking forward to most, because they always have Häagen-Dazs ice cream after the meal—a small cup, just right! Tasmania was one of those places that completely changed my idea of Australia. Compared with Melbourne and Sydney, Hobart felt much quieter, which was exactly what I wanted after spending time in bigger cities. From Hobart, I headed out to explore Tasmania's incredible natural scenery. 🌊 Freycinet National Park One of my favorite places was Freycinet National Park. The first time I saw Wineglass Bay from the lookout, I honestly couldn't believe the colors. The curved white beach, turquoise water and surrounding mountains created one of the most beautiful coastal views I've experienced in Australia. The hike to the lookout wasn't particularly long, but I definitely recommend wearing proper shoes and taking your time. I stayed at the viewpoint longer than expected because the scenery kept changing as the sunlight moved across the bay. 🏔️ Cradle Mountain Another highlight was Cradle Mountain. The landscape here felt completely different from the coastline. There were alpine trails, ancient forests, rocky peaks and peaceful lakes. Even though the weather changed quickly, that actually made the scenery feel even more dramatic. I remember standing beside Dove Lake with Cradle Mountain in the background. The water was incredibly calm, and for a few minutes there was almost complete silence. One of the places I was most excited to see around Melbourne was the Brighton Bathing Boxes. I had seen the colorful little beach huts countless times in photos, but standing in front of them in person was even more charming than I expected. Located along Brighton Beach, these historic bathing boxes line the shore facing Port Phillip Bay. Each one has its own unique colors and designs, which makes the whole beach feel like an open-air art gallery. My favorite part was simply walking along the beach and looking at the different boxes. Some were decorated with bright Australian themes, while others had playful patterns and personal designs. The famous Australian flag bathing box was definitely one of the ones I wanted to photograph. What surprised me was how peaceful Brighton felt. So, in this post, I want to share something genuinely personal about how my relationship with travel has evolved, because I think the experience I am about to describe is one that more people have had than openly talk about, and I am curious whether it resonates with you. I have spent the last few posts describing myself as a Nature Seeker, and that description is accurate and genuinely reflects how I approach most trips. Mountains, beaches, national parks, waterfalls, the further from urban density the better. That is my default setting, and it has been for as long as I can remember traveling with any real sense of what I was looking for. But here is something I have come to believe after enough trips to enough different kinds of places: the destinations that change us the most are rarely the ones that give us more of what we already know we love. They are the ones that introduce us to something we did not know we were missing. And for me, that destination was Australia. I arrived in Australia as a Nature Seeker with every intention of remaining one. Australia has the kind of natural environments that should make any Nature Seeker immediately and completely at home: the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Center, the dramatic coastlines, and the ancient and otherworldly landscapes of the outback. The natural credentials are extraordinary, and I was fully prepared to spend my time there chasing all of it. What actually happened was something I did not see coming and did not plan for. Australia's Aboriginal history and culture was the thing that first produced this shift in me, and I want to be honest that it happened partly because I was confronted with how little I actually knew. The more I learned, even in the relatively surface-level way that a visitor can learn during a short trip, the more I wanted to know. I found myself spending time in museums that I would normally have walked through quickly on the way to something outdoors. I found myself in conversations with locals that extended well beyond the usual tourist exchange. But it was not only the Aboriginal history that produced this transformation. It was Australia's broader cultural character, the specific and sometimes surprising way that this country has developed its own distinct identity from an extraordinarily diverse mix of influences and histories. The multicultural food scene that reflects waves of immigration across generations. Public art is integrated into urban environments in ways that make it part of daily life rather than confined to galleries. The sporting culture and what it reveals about community and collective identity. The way everyday Australians interact with each other and with visitors is genuinely open and unpretentious. Even the cafés, which in certain Australian cities have developed a coffee and hospitality culture that feels like a genuine local invention rather than an import. What about you, guys?
