Before our Switzerland trip, I spent weeks researching packing lists. Some suggested bringing heavy winter clothing, while others recommended packing as light as possible. After completing our 12-day, 11-night family journey through Lucerne, Grindelwald, Zermatt and Zurich, I realised something much simpler: Packing the right things matters far more than packing more things. Travelling with a young child and my elderly mum also meant that comfort and convenience were more important than ever. Looking back, these are the items we were genuinely glad we packed—and the ones we would definitely bring again. ⸻ One thing I would never compromise on is a comfortable pair of hiking shoes. Switzerland has an excellent public transport system, but we still walked thousands of steps every day through train stations, old towns, mountain villages and scenic hiking trails. Comfortable shoes made every sightseeing day much more enjoyable, especially at Jungfraujoch, Mount First, Männlichen and Gornergrat. Another lesson we learned was not to overpack heavy winter clothing. We visited at the end of May and found that layering worked much better. A simple combination of a T-shirt, sweater and wind jacket was enough for most days. When the mountain weather changed, we simply added or removed a layer instead of carrying a bulky coat everywhere. Rigi Kulm → Rigi Kaltbad ⏱️ Duration: ~15 minutes Continue by cogwheel train to the peaceful village of Rigi Kaltbad. 🍽️ Lunch Break ⏱️ Recommended stay: 1–1.5 hours Rigi Kaltbad is a pleasant place to slow down, enjoy lunch and take in the alpine surroundings before continuing the journey. 🚠 Rigi Kaltbad → Weggis ⏱️ Duration: ~10 minutes The cable car offers a different perspective of Lake Lucerne as you descend towards Weggis. The moment I stepped out of the train station, I was surrounded by towering cliffs, wooden Swiss chalets, green meadows, and waterfalls cascading from hundreds of metres above. It felt like walking into a real-life fairytale. Nestled in one of Switzerland's most beautiful valleys, Lauterbrunnen is often called the "Valley of 72 Waterfalls." Everywhere you look, there's another waterfall flowing down the dramatic cliffs, creating one of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever seen. The most famous waterfall here is Staubbach Falls, which drops nearly 300 metres and can even be seen from the village centre. On sunny days, the mist creates tiny rainbows, making the entire valley feel almost unreal. 📝 My Experience I spent the afternoon simply wandering around the village with no fixed itinerary—and honestly, that was the best decision. Every corner looked like a postcard. Traditional wooden houses decorated with flowers, cows grazing peacefully in open fields, mountain peaks rising in the background, and waterfalls everywhere. The town of Mürren is seriously super chill! 🇨🇭 It's a car-free village at an altitude of around 1,650 meters 🏡, and a major gateway to the Schilthorn ⛰️. The entire village only has about 450 residents 👥. With absolutely no noisy traffic 🚗❌, you're left with a wonderfully slow-paced, laid-back lifestyle and an authentic mountain vibe 🪵. Traditional wooden chalets are built into the hillside 🏚️, their windowsills bursting with colorful flowers 🌸. Looking into the distance, you're met with the awe-inspiring peaks of the Alps 🏔️. Strolling down the streets 🚶♂️, it truly feels like you've stepped right into a fairytale town ✨. Personally 👀, compared to other popular attractions full of tourists 👥, Mürren isn't overcrowded 🍃. Instead, it perfectly matches exactly what you want if you're looking to quietly soak in the purest Swiss mountain village scenery 🏞️. Later, we walked through the town to another cable car station 👣 and took a roughly 4-minute cable car ride up to the Allmendhubel Flower Valley 🚡. In the blink of an eye, the landscape switched from a tranquil mountain village to a vast alpine meadow 🌲. Summer is truly the peak season here ☀️. A random yet spectacular array of alpine wildflowers bursts into bloom everywhere 🌻, looking like a masterpiece painted by Mother Nature herself 🎨. The visual impact is doubly stunning 🤩! For the way back, we decided to skip the cable car ❌ and chose a hiking trail to slowly make our way down the mountain 🥾. That day, we bumped into maybe 5 or 6 other tourists on the trail in total 🚶♀️, giving it an incredible sense of privacy 🍃. We traversed the expansive meadows and flower valleys 🌿, stepping on the green grass 👣. The melodious sound of cowbells drifted to our ears 🔔, mingling with the rustle of the micro breeze blowing through the flora 💨. The healing vibes of the whole valley were maxed out 🧘♂️, completely washing away all everyday work stress 💻❌. Looking up, there were the spectacular snow mountains 🏔️, and looking down, a sea of flowers swaying in the breeze 🌷. It's simply the perfect check-in spot 📸. Every step was so therapeutic 🥰, making me subconsciously slow my pace 🕒. My overall rating is: a perfect 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! The Allmendhubel Flower Valley might not be as signature as the Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn 🗺️, but it's absolutely a summer-limited hidden gem 💎. These are five destinations that completely exceeded my expectations and deserve far more attention. 🇯🇴 Jordan Most people know Jordan because of Petra, but the country offers so much more. Sleeping under the stars in Wadi Rum, floating in the Dead Sea, exploring ancient castles, and experiencing incredible hospitality make Jordan one of the most diverse destinations in the Middle East. 🇴🇲 Oman A country that surprised me from the very first day. Dramatic mountains, turquoise wadis, endless deserts, and beautiful traditional towns create an incredible mix of landscapes. Oman feels authentic, peaceful, and refreshingly untouched by mass tourism . 🇲🇾 Malaysia Malaysia is often overshadowed by Thailand and Singapore, which is a shame. You can explore modern cities, tropical islands, tea plantations, ancient rainforests, and some of the best food in Asia – all in one trip. It's also one of the easiest and most comfortable countries to travel around. 🇮🇷 Iran Few places have changed my expectations as much as Iran. Stunning architecture, historic cities, colorful mosques, and some of the warmest people I've ever met make it an unforgettable destination. Every city feels different, and every conversation becomes part of the journey. 🇹🇯 Tajikistan If you love mountains, Tajikistan is pure magic. The Pamir Highway is one of the world's great road trips, with dramatic landscapes, remote villages, high-altitude lakes, and scenery that seems almost unreal. It still feels like a true adventure destination. These countries may not always appear on the usual travel lists, but each one gave me experiences I still think about long after returning home. Sometimes the most memorable journeys begin with choosing the places that everyone else overlooks.

One of the biggest decisions when planning a trip to Switzerland is choosing between the Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card. If your itinerary is packed and you plan to travel to a different destination almost every day, this pass offers great convenience and value. I prefer a slower and more relaxed style of travel, so I chose the Swiss Half Fare Card instead. It gives me 50% off most train, bus, boat, and mountain transport fares, which worked out better for my itinerary. If you're staying in Interlaken, there's another bonus to keep in mind. Most hotels and Airbnb hosts provide an Interlaken Guest Card, which gives you free travel on local public buses within the Interlaken area. This can help you save even more, especially if you're using the Half Fare Card. There isn't a "best" pass for everyone. It all depends on how you plan to travel. Before buying a pass, list down the journeys and mountain excursions you want to take, add up the costs, and compare them with the price of each pass. A little planning can save you a lot of money. The journey alone is worth it—expect crystal-clear lakes, green valleys, and snow-capped mountains outside your window almost the entire way.
