All Trip Moments about Elounda | Travel Experiences
Spinalonga is an arid and barren rocky islet with an area of 8.5 hectares lying at the mouth of the natural port of Elounda in the Lasithi prefecture of Crete. Due to its strategic location, it was fortified and served a variety of roles and purposes over the centuries.
Spinalonga
“Spinalonga. She played with the word rolling it around her tongue like an olive stone. The island lay directly ahead and as the boat approached the great Venetian fortification which fronted the sea […]. This, she speculated, might be a place where history was still warm, not stone cold, where the inhabitants were really not mythical”....
... as Victoria Hislop wrote in her best-selling book “The Island”.
Here, on an island where lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece had been kept in isolation until 1957, a story about love and pain, separation and fear was born.
Although it is small and known as the island of the outcasts, Spinalonga has a rather interesting story to tell. The island forms a natural defence “mechanism” for Elounda harbour, and in 1579 the Venetians built a mighty fortress here on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. The Venetians kept control of the island even after the rest of Crete fell to the Ottomans in 1669 and it remained under their control for almost another half a century until its capitulation in 1715. Today thousands of tourists visit Spinalonga by boat from Ayios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka each summer as it is the most popular archaeological site in Crete after Knossos.
A walk around Spinalonga –with some of the finest views of the clear blue waters that surround the island– will guide you through the pages of the novel. Strolling around the island takes about an hour, but the serenity of the place and the remnants of its recent history will certainly tempt you into spending much longer. A left turn by the old town hall takes you down to the beautiful seafront; take advantage of the opportunity to take some time for a swim.

A Simple Hotel in Crete That Blew Us Away with Its Location
Hotel Krini is a small but incredibly atmospheric hotel in Crete that truly surprises you with its vibe! It’s located near Elounda (Elounda, Crete, Greece). Don’t expect fancy chandeliers here, but what matters more than glitz is the coziness and the mega-friendly staff.
Service here is 💯! The staff is just "wow": everyone greets you with a smile and genuinely cares about your stay, making you feel like a long-awaited guest rather than just another visitor. Massive respect! ❤️
The overall atmosphere is very intimate and peaceful. After a busy day exploring Crete, it’s so nice to hang out in the hotel’s bright lounge area—you can chill with a book or chat about your day.
And the location of Hotel Krini is top-tier, especially if you’re renting a car like we did. Everything is perfectly situated for a road trip across the eastern part of Crete! Our route was: Agios Nikolaos → Elounda → Plaka → Spinalonga—all easily accessible. 🚗🌊
Hotel Krini Address: Andrea Papandreou 17, Elounda 720 53, Crete, Greece
We recommend booking through trip.com for convenience and the best deals!
We left with such warm memories: the hotel doesn't try to be luxury, but instead offers a truly soulful experience.
What do you think? Can the staff "save" even the most basic hotel for you? 😊 Share your stories!

Spinalonga Island is a miniature piece of land located just 200 meters off the east coast of Crete in Greece. The area of the island is 0.085 km². The island is uninhabited. It is opposite the fishing village of Plaka, bordered by the waters of the picturesque Mirabello Bay. Today, visiting Spinalonga is very popular among tourists, and first of all, the object attracts attention with its ancient architectural building - a once majestic fortress, which has managed to survive well to this day.
You can get to Spinalonga by boat from three different points. The fastest and cheapest way to get to the island is from the nearby village of Plaka. Transport departs to the sights every 15 minutes. The cost of a trip in both directions is 10 €. Travel time is no more than 5-7 minutes.
