Italy Sicily 🔶Erice 🥠Pasticceria Maria Grammatico
#Overseas Travel
The owner of the Trapani B&B in Sicily said that if you go to Erice, you must try a kind of pastry "Genovesi di Erice", which is a traditional pastry only available in the mountain town of Erice!
You can find it at the famous local Pasticceria Maria Grammatico. This cookie is filled with milk cream and sprinkled with icing sugar, and is shaped like the classic Genoese sailor's hat.
The store also sells a variety of traditional cakes and pastries. There are also a small number of outdoor seats with sea views.

The handicrafts of Sicily all have a unique and exotic style. There are many specialty handicraft shops in the mountain town of Erice, especially the L’artigianato di Dorotea "Ceramica" ceramic craft shop, which is definitely worth a visit!
The ceramics outside the door are displayed very eye-catchingly! It is even more dazzling in the sun, making people unable to help but look at it a few more times. These ceramics from Sicily are colorful, and the patterns and colors of each piece are pleasing to the eye~

Erice Mountaintop⛰️Ancient City|Sicily
😍A town with very durable historical sites located on a high mountain|Erice Town
Every corner of the town is very retro... a very simple town🏠🏠
💡💡💡
Erice is an important tourist town in Italy and was rated as a "three-star tourist recommendation" (the highest level) by the Michelin Travel Guide.
Erice is one of the must-see attractions in Sicily, southern Italy
Recently, it has become more popular because of the movie😍😍😍
Erice Ancient City 📍

Suggestions and charm, traditions and stories from the past, beauty and wonder. You can feel all this while walking through the streets of Erice, a village among the most beautiful in Italy. Its history is enhanced by the poet Virgil, who cites Erice in his most famous work, the Aeneid, making it a stop in the Trojan hero Aeneas’s journey; the hero is also the mythical founder of Rome.
To discover Erice, let’s begin our tour from Porta Trapani and walk through the alley streets and the squares, bordered by churches and palaces that, in open spaces, reveal majestic landscapes. Erice is famous for its numerous churches, indeed it was known as the city with a hundred churches. However, in reality there are less but many must be visited. Besides the Church of San Martino, in Norman style, and the Church of Sant’Albertino degli Abbati, we will highlight the oldest, the Mother Church, dedicated to the cult of Santa Maria Assunta. Its quadrangular bell tower is embellished with mullioned windows; it is a structure with the function of defending and sighting. There are nine crosses in the right wall of the church: legend has it that those crosses came from the temple of Venus, carried by Frederick of Aragon, who was a runaway and refugee in the city during the War of the Vespers.

Erice Balio Gardens viewpoint promenade
#planitorwingit The Balio Gardens in Erice are one of those places where I’m glad I “planned it.” I’d seen a photo of the Norman castle perched on a hill with the sea behind it, so I made a beeline for the gardens, which sit right between the two castles. Entrance is free, and the path is short—maybe ten minutes each way—but the views are the kind you stare at for an hour. I went at sunset, which I highly recommend. The light hits the stone towers and turns the sea a deep purple. There are benches along the way, but they fill up fast, so I leaned on a railing instead. My advice: wear shoes with grip. The stone can be slippery, especially in the evening damp. Would you rather have a planned sunset spot or a surprise view?

Erice Procession of the Mysteries backstreet walk
#planitorwingit If you ever find yourself in Erice during Good Friday, drop everything and follow the crowd. I “winged it” and ended up in the middle of the Procession of the Mysteries—a moving, slightly eerie parade of hooded figures carrying centuries-old statues through the narrow, lantern-lit streets. I had no idea what was happening at first, but the atmosphere was so powerful that I just went with it. Locals lined the route in silence, some crying, others holding candles. I later learned the procession dates back to the 17th century. My tip: if you want a good view, stake out a spot on Via Mazzini at least an hour early. And bring a jacket—Erice gets cold at night, even in April. Have you ever stumbled into a local tradition by accident?
uuub77
Erice Venus Castle garden walk
#planitorwingit I’m a “wing it” traveler by nature, but for the Venus Castle gardens in Erice, I made a rare exception: I checked the opening hours and packed a water bottle. Why? Because the castle sits at the top of a hill, and the walk up is no joke. I’d read that the gardens are free to enter, but the castle itself costs a few euros—cash only, so I withdrew €10 before leaving Trapani. The walk through the gardens was peaceful, with stone paths, cypress trees, and benches facing the sea. I sat for a good twenty minutes, watching the mist roll in. It felt like a movie set. My advice: plan your Erice visit around the weather. If it’s foggy, the views vanish, and you’re left with damp shoes and a €12 taxi fare. Is it worth paying for the castle interior, or is the garden stroll the real highlight?
uuub77
A Stroll Along Erice’s Medieval Walls
#planitorwingit My stroll along the medieval wall lane in Erice was a “wing it” decision. I was just exploring the town and saw a path leading along the top of the walls, so I decided to follow it. I hadn't planned to see the walls, but I'm glad I did.
The walk was a unique perspective on the town. I could see the stone buildings, the narrow lanes, and the beautiful countryside beyond. I found a quiet spot on a bench and just sat for a while, enjoying the views and the cool breeze.
My tip for this kind of unplanned walk is to always be ready for a climb. The best views are often at the top of a hill. And don't forget your camera; the views are stunning.

A Ride and a Walk Up to Erice
#planitorwingit My trip up to Erice was a mix of planning and spontaneity. I had planned to take the cable car from Trapani, a quick and easy way to get up the hill. I bought a round-trip ticket for €6 (card accepted) and enjoyed the views from the cabin.
Once I was at the top, I decided to just “wing it” and explore the hill path on foot. I followed the path as it wound through the town, past the medieval walls and the beautiful gardens. I found a quiet spot on a bench and just sat for a while, enjoying the views and the cool breeze.
My advice? The cable car is a great way to get up to Erice, but the real magic is in the walking. Once you’re at the top, ditch the map and just explore.
uuub77
A Steep Climb to a Quiet Church
#planitorwingit My walk up to the Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore in Erice was a "plan it" decision. I had seen photos of the church, which is perched on a hill overlooking the town, and I knew I had to see it for myself. The walk was steep and the cobblestones were uneven, but I was determined.
I'm glad I made the effort. The church itself is beautiful, but the real highlight was the view from the terrace. I could see the entire town of Erice, with its maze of narrow streets and stone buildings, and in the distance, the sea. It was a moment of pure peace and quiet.
My advice for this kind of walk is to wear proper shoes and take your time. The climb is worth it for the views alone. And if you're lucky, you might have the terrace all to yourself.

A Balcony with a View in Erice
#planitorwingit Erice is a town of stone and sky, and the Balio Gardens offer one of the best viewpoints in all of Sicily. I had this one planned. I knew I wanted to see the views of the coastline and the Egadi Islands, so I made a point to visit the gardens in the late afternoon.
The walk through the gardens is short and sweet, but the real reward is the view from the top. I found a stone bench, bought a gelato from a nearby kiosk for €2.50, and just watched the world go by. The light was golden, and the views were simply breathtaking.
My tip? Time your visit to coincide with sunset. It's a popular spot, so get there early to secure a good seat on one of the benches. And don't forget your camera—the views are spectacular.
wet22
Caught in a Living Tradition
#planitorwingit My trip to Erice coincided with the Procession of the Mysteries, a deeply moving and centuries-old event. I had no idea this was happening—it was a complete "wing it" surprise. I was just walking down a narrow lane, minding my own business, when I heard the sound of a marching band and saw a group of people carrying huge, elaborate floats.
I followed the crowd, completely swept up in the atmosphere. The air was thick with incense, and the expressions on the participants' faces were a mix of devotion and exhaustion. I ended up following the procession for over an hour, just absorbing the sights and sounds.
My advice? If you find yourself in a town during a local festival, drop your plans and join in. It's a chance to witness a community's soul in a way that no museum or guidebook can ever capture.

Erice Venus Castle garden walk
#citybreakvsnatureescape The garden inside Erice’s Venus Castle is small, slightly wild, and completely enchanting. I paid €4 to enter (cash only) and followed a winding path past cypress trees, stone statues, and a few benches with views over the valley.
The castle itself is more atmosphere than artifact — a few crumbling walls, a small museum, and a lot of empty space. But the garden is the real highlight: shaded, cool, and full of birds. I sat on a stone seat for a long time, reading a plaque about the temple that once stood here.
There’s no cafe inside, so bring water. The path loops in about 20 minutes, but I lingered much longer. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down without meaning to.
Do you think historical sites need lush gardens to soften their edges, or is that just a modern preference?
kko44
Erice medieval wall lane stroll
#citybreakvsnatureescape Erice’s medieval walls enclose a town that feels suspended in time. I followed the lane along the top of the walls one afternoon, admiring the stonework and the view over the Egadi Islands.
The path is narrow and cobbled, with a few benches placed strategically for resting and photographing. It’s free to walk, and there are several small gates leading into the town’s centre. I popped into a bakery for a “genovese” pastry (€2, cash only) and ate it on a low wall, watching the mist roll in.
Wear proper shoes — the stones are uneven and slippery in places. I also learned that the walls can be windy, even on warm days, so bring a light jacket.
Do you think walled towns like Erice are romantic, or do they feel a little too preserved?
kko44
Trapani Erice cable-car hill walk
#citybreakvsnatureescape The cable car from Trapani to Erice is a short, steep ride — about 10 minutes each way — and it offers a view that’s worth every euro. I paid €5.50 for a return ticket (cash or card) and arrived at the top to find a medieval hill town wrapped in mist.
Erice itself is small, quiet, and slightly mysterious. I followed the main lane towards the castle (€4 entry, cash only), then walked the outer walls for a view over the salt pans and the sea.
The path is cobbled and uneven, so wear proper shoes. I made the mistake of going in thin sandals and regretted it within minutes. Also, the last cable car down is around 7 p.m. in summer — check the timetable before you go.
Do you think hill towns like Erice are better in the fog, or does the view need clear skies to impress?

Erice is very nice place with history and vibes

Medieval Stone Alley
If you come to Sicily, don’t miss Erice, a medieval town built on a mountaintop.
At an altitude of 751 meters, the town is full of stone alleys, ancient churches, and incredibly soothing Mediterranean scenery, often called "Sicily’s most beautiful mountain town."
It’s best to visit in the evening!
There are more tour groups during the day, but after the tourists leave at dusk, the entire old town becomes especially quiet, creating a perfect atmosphere.✨
📍 What’s worth seeing in Erice?
1️⃣ Royal Cathedral (Real Duomo)
The most important church in the old town, with a bell tower next to it, featuring typical medieval style—great for photos.
2️⃣ Vittorio Main Street
Erice’s most classic cobblestone street.
Along the way, you’ll find:
Small restaurants
Handicraft shops
Souvenir shops
Ice cream shops
Just strolling here feels like a movie scene.
3️⃣ Maria Grammatico Pastry Shop
A must-try in Erice!
Recommended:
🍰 Genoese cake
☕ Espresso
🌰 Almond desserts
A very famous old Sicilian shop.
4️⃣ Venus Castle (Castello di Venere)
Erice’s landmark.
Rather than the castle interior, the surrounding viewing platforms are more recommended. From here, you can directly overlook:
🌊 The Mediterranean Sea
🏔 Valleys
🏘 Trapani
🧂 Salt pans
The sunset here is truly stunning.
🚡 How to get to Erice?
Most recommended:
Take the cable car up the mountain
Departing from Trapani, about 10 minutes.

#winterescape Step into Timeless Charm at Chiesa Matrice in Erice ⛪️🕰️
This enchanting cathedral blends medieval mystery with Sicilian flair, offering history buffs and architecture lovers a serene, photogenic escape. Whether cloudy or sunny, Erice’s Duomo reveals a striking silhouette amid windswept cobbled streets.
For your visit, start from Erice’s main gate and stroll up to piazza Matrice. You’ll spot the Chiesa Matrice’s imposing facade—perfect for a dramatic, insta-worthy exterior shot. Inside, marvel at intricate stonework and the tranquil ambiance. Don’t miss the rose window and soaring nave, best captured with natural light streaming in (afternoons ideal on sunnier days). Seek out cozy corners for close-ups, like carvings or patterned floors; your fabric-with-fish photo inspiration blends beautifully with Erice’s textured tapestries and relics.
On rainy or cloudy days, the Duomo’s atmospheric light makes for moody, artistic photos. If you catch a sunny break, walk nearby for sweeping views of Erice; the square outside provides modern-meets-medieval contrasts, ideal for wide-angle shots of both Western-style and contemporary architecture in your frame.
Tips: Visit early to avoid crowds and catch peaceful moments. The church opens most days from mid-morning—confirm hours locally as they vary with seasons and religious events. Modest attire is required; bring a scarf just in case. Avoid weekends if you want quiet, as local ceremonies can fill the space.
Precautions: The stone steps can be slippery on wet days, so wear sturdy shoes. Photography inside may be restricted during services.

Erice: The Timeless Walled City Above the Clouds
High above Trapani, the medieval town of Erice sits encircled by ancient stone walls, with cobbled lanes, castles, and sweeping views that stretch from the sea to the mountains 🏰🌄. It feels like stepping back in time, with winding alleys leading to charming courtyards, pastry shops, and historic churches.
The best way to reach Erice is by cable car 🚡 from Trapani. The Funivia Trapani–Erice runs daily (weather permitting), usually from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm, and later in summer. A round-trip ticket costs about €9 per adult (or €6 one-way). The 10-minute journey glides over vineyards and salt pans, ending with a spectacular approach to the mountaintop town. If you are driving, parking can be difficult and quite pricey in the city itself, but there is a free grass car park five minutes walk east of the Porta Trapani, just off Strada Provinciale 3!
Inside the walls, wander to Castello di Venere for breathtaking views, and be sure to try the town’s famous almond pastries 🍪 — a sweet tradition going back centuries.
Erice is a magical blend of history, views, and flavours — well worth the ride up. ✨

Village on the Mountain, Castle in the Sky
Perched at an altitude of 750 meters, there is a village built on the mountain peak called Erice.
💙 Known as the Castle in the Sky of Sicily, this village can be reached by car, but taking the cable car is a faster option. The cable car's operating hours may vary daily, so it's best to check in advance.
♥️ As you ride the cable car up, you can't help but marvel at how a village could be built in such a high place—it’s truly fascinating.
💛 Due to its elevated location, you can enjoy views of the Trapani salt flats and the cityscape of Trapani.
💕 I stayed in the city of Trapani and visited this place for half a day. If you're staying in Trapani or Palermo, I highly recommend taking some time to visit this enchanting village. 😉

Beautiful view from Mount Erice!
While in Trapani, we decided to visit Mount Erice, which is in proximity to the city. We took the cable car to get to the top and while seated comfortably in the little cabin, we enjoyed some breath-taking moments adminiring the views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea from an altitude of 500 m above sea level. Once on top, we visit the small town of Erice, where we stopped for one of the most amazing pizzas I have ever tasted! An overall awesome day!#familytrip #localguides

Erice of Sicily
The city of stone seemed to have hibernated to escape the winter cold, and there was no sign of people. If I were to describe Erice’s winter, I would say that high is not enough, and silence would be more appropriate. There were only about ten or so travelers like us who visited the quiet city of Erice, and the shiny stone floor absorbed even the sound of people’s footsteps, and the murmur of their voices was trapped between the solid walls, so the only human sound was the coughing of two or three people we happened to encounter while walking down the alley. It seemed like everyone in Erice in winter was practicing their Tao in the solid stone.
