Many people think that in September–October, Yuxi is just Fuxian Lake crowded with tourists and endless social media photo spots❌! I just finished a 3-day trip through the hidden gems of Central Yunnan, and I'm genuinely warning you against it—because you might fall in love with the forests, ancient villages, and local culture and never want to leave! In September–October, Central Yunnan is crisp and clear with bright highland sunshine. The heat has faded, tourist crowds have thinned significantly, Ailao Mountain is turning colorful, and Huayao Dai flavors and Eshan pounded dishes are in season. It’s a one-stop experience of lakes, mountains, ancient temples, tea fields, and ethnic villages—uncrowded, peaceful, and great value. This no-nonsense, real-life 3-day itinerary for off-the-beaten-path travel is perfect for your short autumn getaway in the Southwest. Just copy and go📝✨ 1️⃣ Real 3-day itinerary experience Day 1: Ailao Mountain canyon and forest route🌲 Depart at 8:00 AM for Ailao Mountain Shimen Gorge. In September–October, the forests are lush, the canyon streams are babbling, and the wooden boardwalks are gentle and easy to walk. The stream water is crystal clear, the air is rich in negative oxygen ions, and there are few tourists. Immerse yourself in the primitive forest and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the mountains. Light-colored outfits look great with the forest light and shadows; the streams and ancient trees are perfect photo spots📸. For lunch, try nearby caravan-style farm food—wild mountain vegetables and local cured meat. It’s fresh, rustic, and authentic Southern Yunnan flavor for about 50 yuan per person. In the afternoon, visit Nan'en Waterfall. The autumn water volume is abundant, the waterfall rushes down the cliff, and mist fills the air. If you're lucky, you might see a rainbow. View the magnificent scenery from the observation deck without having to squeeze into popular spots. On the way, visit the Longxi Aristocratic Manor to experience the old chieftain's residence and learn about the history of Central Yunnan chieftains. In the evening, return to Gasa Town, stroll through the local streets, and try the Gasa beef hot pot—spicy, savory, and rich. Stay in the town overnight, listen to the mountain breeze, and get away from the hustle and bustle. Day 2: Yi ethnic village and tea field route🍵 Head early to Eshan Yuncha Manor. Thousands of acres of tea gardens spread across the mountains. In autumn, clouds and mist swirl around, and the tea fields stretch out in layers. You can stroll through the tea rows, try simple tea picking, or sit in a tea pavilion to relax. There are almost no tour groups here—it's quiet and healing. For lunch, enjoy a tea-themed feast at the manor, where tea is incorporated into dishes paired with mountain vegetables for a unique flavor. In the afternoon, explore Xi'e Ancient Town, a free Yi cultural town. The ancient buildings and alleys are well-preserved, and you can learn about Yi customs in the intangible cultural heritage exhibition hall. It’s not overly commercialized, so you can stroll slowly and soak up the local atmosphere. In the evening, drive back to Hongta District, visit Qinghua Street, avoid the noisy crowds, browse ceramic creative shops, and feel the evening breeze while experiencing the local life of old Yuxi. For dinner, try Yuxi cold rice noodles or eel rice noodles—sour, spicy, and appetizing to wash away the fatigue of the journey. Day 3: Cultural ancient temples and local market finale🏯 In the morning, head to Xiushan in Tonghai, known as the "most beautiful mountain in Southern Yunnan." Ancient temples are scattered among the forests, with vigorous ancient cypresses and numerous stone inscriptions and plaques. Climb up to overlook Qilu Lake. There are few tourists, making it perfect for a quiet stroll to appreciate the cultural heritage of Central Yunnan. For lunch, eat local snacks in Tonghai Old Town, like bean powder candy and rice cakes—unlock the daily food of locals for just over 10 yuan. In the afternoon, choose one of two options: if you prefer science, visit the Chengjiang Fossil Site Museum (free, requires reservation) to see ancient fossils—it's cool indoors and avoids the afternoon sun. If you like markets, go to the local farmers' market to buy affordable souvenirs like tea, handmade pottery, and dried fruit, avoiding the overpriced shops in tourist areas. Then, pack up and head home. The 3-day itinerary is well-paced, covering primitive canyons, waterfalls, tea fields, and Yi ancient temples. It avoids crowded tourist spots, making for a relaxed and comfortable early autumn trip. 2️⃣ Transportation guide🚞 Visitors from out of town can take a high-speed train directly to Yuxi Station; it's a 30-minute ride from Kunming. · Self-driving is preferred: Attractions in Ailao Mountain, Eshan, and Tonghai are far apart. There are many curves on the mountain roads, but the road conditions are good. Most scenic spots offer free parking, and it offers the most freedom. · Public transport: Taxis are convenient in the city. For trips to Ailao Mountain and Eshan, you can carpool to save time. · The mountain roads in Ailao Mountain have many curves. Try to travel during the day; driving on mountain roads at night is not recommended. 3️⃣ Honest accommodation review🏨 Accommodation location: Boutique hotels around Nie Er Square in Hongta District Price for September–October: 170–230 yuan/night Highlights: Located in the city center, close to many supermarkets and restaurants, and not far from Qinghua Street and the Former Residence of Nie Er. The rooms are clean, well-ventilated, and have good soundproofing. It's quiet and livable at night, and dining and transportation are very convenient, so there's no need to stay in remote mountain areas. 4️⃣ Autumn travel tips to avoid pitfalls⚠️ 1. In September–October, the temperature difference between day and night on the Yuxi plateau is large. The sun is strong during the day, but it's cool in the mountains in the morning and evening. Bring a light jacket. The plateau UV rays are strong, so be sure to use sun protection. 2. The Ailao Mountain canyon trails are damp and mossy. Be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes and do not wander onto undeveloped wild paths. 3. Local food is mostly sour and spicy. If you don't eat spicy food, make a note when ordering for "mild" or "no spice." 4. Some attractions in Ailao Mountain require a package ticket. Buy tickets online in advance and do not trust roadside guides who charge for leading the way. 5. Museums are closed on Mondays. Check opening hours before you go to avoid a wasted trip. 6. There are many mosquitoes in the forests, so carry mosquito repellent. Mobile phone signals are weak in some mountain areas, so download offline maps in advance.

🌿 Eshan | Yuxi, Yunnan | Summer getaway · A hidden gem of the Yi people Everyone, listen up!! Yunnan isn't just about Dali and Lijiang. This time, I discovered a hidden gem of a county that's only an hour and a half from Kunming—Eshan Yi Autonomous County. This is the first Yi autonomous county in the People's Republic of China. The average summer temperature is around 20°C. I went straight from a 38°C furnace of a city into this green basin, and the difference in how it felt was so huge it made me want to cry 😭 🗺️ My 2-day itinerary Day 1 → Xie'e Ancient Town → Jinping Mountain → Stroll through the Lotus Pond Night Market Day 2 → Tea picking at Yuncha Manor → Bamboo Sea in Yiren Valley → Return trip No rushing, no marathon walking, just a purely relaxed vacation vibe ✌️ 🏮 Xie'e Ancient Town—not your typical cookie-cutter commercial town Honestly, I didn't have high expectations before I went, but I was proven wrong. This ancient town was rebuilt after the renovation of the old urban area. It retains the yellow walls and gray tiles characteristic of Yi architecture, while the streets are interspersed with modern art pieces like heart-shaped bamboo weaving installations and red drum sculptures, making it super photogenic. My favorites were the Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall and the Eshan Museum, which are combined into one complex and are free to visit! They display Yi embroidery, flower drum dance props, models of the Torch Festival's sacred fire altar... I felt like I had so much more to talk about after walking through it, haha. 📌 Tip: It's best to go around 6 or 7 PM. The moment the lanterns light up, the atmosphere of the whole street is just perfect. ⛰️ Jinping Mountain—a natural green lung right next to the county town This mountain is only 1.5 km from the county town, so you can walk there! It's not very high, with the peak at over 1,800 meters, but the vegetation coverage is over 90%. It's all Yunnan pine and Armand pine. Walking on the forest trails, with a thick layer of pine needles underfoot, it feels soft, and the air is filled with the fresh scent of pine resin. There's a Crescent Pond on the mountain, a naturally formed half-moon-shaped pond with emerald green water. Stone railings and resting platforms are set up nearby. I sat there for a long time, not thinking about anything, just listening to the wind passing through the treetops. There are also check-in spots like the Immortal Cave and the Sea of Clouds Pavilion. If you have the energy, you can visit them all; if not, just walking to the Crescent Pond and back is totally worth it. 🍵 Yuncha Manor—a tea plantation surrounded by 500,000 mu of primeval forest I headed straight to Yuncha Manor early the next morning, and I have to rave about this place! The entire tea plantation is embedded in the primeval forest, with an incredibly open view. In the distance are rolling green mountains, and nearby are neat rows of tea trees. The air is moist and sweet. You can experience tea picking and processing! Put on a small bamboo basket, follow the tea farmers to learn how to pluck one bud and two leaves, then hand-process it—killing the green, rolling, and drying—and finally take home the tea you made yourself. This experience is absolutely amazing. I also learned a fun fact here: Eshan's high-aroma tea is actually quite famous in the Yunnan tea circle, but because the production volume isn't large, people from other provinces don't know much about it. 🎋 Bamboo Sea in Yiren Valley—a filming location for a Yunnan-style martial arts movie I went to Yiren Valley in the afternoon. Vast stretches of moso bamboo forests cover the valley. When the wind blows, the bamboo leaves rustle, and light and shadow leak through the bamboo gaps. It feels like walking onto the set of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." There are trails under the bamboo forest for a leisurely walk, and you can even experience digging for bamboo shoots! Holding a hoe and digging in the soft red soil, the sense of accomplishment when you dig one out is off the charts. When you're tired from walking, sit in a bamboo pavilion and drink a cup of bamboo leaf tea. It's cool and refreshing, and the summer heat dissipates in a second. 🌙 About Eshan at night I took a stroll through the Lotus Pond Night Market in the evening. The summer nights in Eshan have gentle breezes. On the side of the street, Yi ladies were dancing the flower drum dance, and tourists could join in. Although my dance steps were a mess, it was really fun, hahaha. If you happen to be there for the Torch Festival in August, it's even more incredible! Drilling wood to make fire, the sacred fire relay, thousands of people group dancing, drone shows... the whole county is in a carnival. It's the most vibrant festival scene I've ever seen. 🏡 Accommodation experience I chose a mountain cabin with a courtyard near the ancient town. Pushing open the window, I could see the layered rooftops and the silhouette of the distant green mountains. The room was decorated with many Yi elements, with handmade embroidery hanging on the walls. The bedding was clean and soft. At night, it was so quiet that I could only hear the insects chirping. I haven't felt that kind of happiness of waking up naturally after a good night's sleep in a long time. 💡 Practical tips summary Drive from Kunming via the Kunming-Mohan Expressway; it's a direct 1.5-hour drive, and the road conditions are great the whole way Jinping Mountain and Xie'e Ancient Town are free to enter; Yuncha Manor and the Bamboo Sea in Yiren Valley require tickets There is a lot of rain in summer, so carry an umbrella with you. The bamboo sea and tea mountains are even more ethereal after the rain It is recommended to arrange at least two days and one night for a comfortable, unhurried pace ✨ Eshan is truly the kind of place you want to visit again after going once. It's not noisy or chaotic, just quietly beautiful. It's the most pleasant surprise of my summer this year!

📍Location Located in Eshan County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, at the eastern foothills of the Ailao Mountains. It is adjacent to the urban area of Eshan Yi Autonomous County and offers convenient transportation. ✨Highlights The core attraction is the 10,000-mu wild bamboo forest, which is lush green in summer and golden in autumn. Combined with peak forest landforms and Yi ethnic villages, it offers both natural wild charm and cultural appeal. The summit offers views of the sea of clouds, making it a hidden gem for photography and hiking enthusiasts. 🗺️Recommended routes · Hiking route: Scenic area entrance > Yuzhu Viewing Platform > Sea of Clouds Plank Road > Yi Cultural Village. The total distance is about 3 km, suitable for a leisurely stroll. · Driving route: Navigate to "Eshan Yuzhu Fenghai Scenic Area Parking Lot" for direct access to the main sightseeing area. The drive takes about 1 hour from Eshan county seat. 🚗Transportation guide · Driving: About 1.5 hours from Yuxi City and about 10 minutes from Eshan county seat. 🔥 Eshan | Yuxi, Yunnan | Immersive summer travel · Torch Festival special Seriously, guys! I went to Eshan specifically for the Torch Festival, but I discovered that this small county is far more than just the festival. First, the conclusion: If you want to go somewhere in August that is uncrowded, cool, and culturally deep, you have to lock in Eshan 🔒 🔥 Torch Festival scene—my mind was blown Let's start with the main event! Eshan's Torch Festival is in August; the specific dates change every year, so I checked in advance before leaving. The core of the event is at the Xi'e Ancient Town Square and the Daxishan Mountain fire altar. It starts with a fire-drilling ceremony where the Yi Bimo (priest) lights the sacred fire in the most ancient way. Then, the sacred fire is passed through the entire county, finally reaching the main venue to light the massive fire altar. How to describe that scene... Tens of thousands of people dancing around the bonfire together, the drumbeats thumping in your chest, sparks flying into the sky, and drone formations performing in the night sky, creating various patterns. The feeling of tradition and technology colliding is so stunning. The next day, there's the Flower Drum Dance competition. Eshan's Flower Drum Dance is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. When those Yi aunties dance, the ribbons at their waists fly, and the rhythm is fast and precise. I was left dumbfounded watching from the side. 🌄 Yuzhu Peak Bamboo Sea—a wilder secret spot than Yiren Valley If Yiren Valley Bamboo Sea is a refined scenic spot, then Yuzhu Peak Bamboo Sea is pure, raw wilderness! The altitude is higher here, and the bamboo grows denser and thicker. Walking inside really gives you a feeling of being cut off from the world. There are very few tourists; I walked for a whole morning and met fewer than 10 people. There is an open viewing platform at the top of the mountain where you can see the bamboo sea and distant mountains connecting into a green ocean. When the wind blows, the bamboo waves surge. That kind of spectacle cannot be captured in photos. ⚠️ Reminder: Some parts of the trail here are quite steep, so wear non-slip shoes! Bring enough water! 🛤️ Strolling through Eshan County—an underrated small city in central Yunnan Honestly, Eshan County itself is great to explore. The Ximen Farmers' Market is a treasure trove with all kinds of local mountain goods, fresh mushrooms, handmade brown sugar, and Yi-style pickled vegetables. It's colorful, great for photos, and you can buy super affordable souvenirs. You can see Yi totem elements everywhere in the county; the streetlights are shaped like torches, and there are statues of Apudumu (the Yi ancestor) in the parks. The city's cultural identity is very distinct. I also found a super comfortable place—the riverside walkway along the Ni River. There are many people walking in the evening, the river breeze is cool, there are old men fishing, and children riding bicycles. That small-town vibe is incredibly relaxing. 🌿 How comfortable is Eshan's climate? I went in August. The daytime high was 27–28°C, but! As soon as you stand in the shade, it's immediately cool because the humidity is low and the breeze is crisp. You don't need air conditioning to sleep at night; a thin blanket is just right. It's completely different from the experience in Kunming, where it gets cold as soon as it rains and scorching when the sun comes out. Eshan's climate is really stable and gentle. 🏡 Accommodation experience This time, I booked an independent Yi-style courtyard at the foot of the tea mountain. The owner converted a traditional rammed-earth house into modern, comfortable guest rooms, retaining the rammed-earth walls and wooden beam structure. Stepping out the door, you're right in the middle of tea trees. Waking up to the sound of birds in the morning, sitting in the courtyard brewing a pot of freshly picked tea, and watching the mist slowly rise from the valley—that's a scene I'll remember for a lifetime. 📝 Torch Festival special guide The Torch Festival dates vary every year, usually around the 24th day of the sixth lunar month. Be sure to confirm the specific time before you leave. The main venue is crowded, so it's recommended to secure a spot early and bring a small stool. The evening party lasts until very late, and the road back to your accommodation might be congested, so plan your route in advance. Anyone can join the mass dance segment; don't be shy, just follow along and dance. The Flower Drum Dance competition is held during the day, which is better for taking photos than at night. 💡 My personal tips If you have enough time, you can stop by nearby Xinping County to see Nan'en Waterfall and Shimen Gorge, which is a little over an hour's drive away. Eshan is also not far from Yuanjiang, so you can combine them into a 3–4-day ethnic culture route in central Yunnan. Wild mushrooms are in season in Eshan in August, and the stir-fried mushrooms at roadside stalls are incredibly delicious. 🌟 A heartfelt word: Eshan isn't the kind of place that makes you go "wow" at first sight, but it's the kind of place where you don't want to leave once you're there. The passion of the Torch Festival, the tranquility of the bamboo sea, and the fragrance of the tea gardens all mixed together—that is the taste of summer that belongs uniquely to Eshan.

Who would have thought that less than a two-hour drive from Kunming, there's a hidden high-mountain tea plantation at an altitude of 2,000 meters? Before I went to the Eshan Gaoxiang Tea Plantation, I thought it was just an ordinary tea mountain. After arriving, I was completely blown away—this isn't just a tea plantation; it's a hidden paradise tucked away in the forest! I've put together a super detailed guide for your tea plantation experience, covering tea picking, tea making, and watching the sea of clouds. Everything is arranged for you right here👇 🍵 Step 1: Get to know this place The Gaoxiang Ecological Tea Plantation is located on Jinping Mountain in Eshan County, 27 kilometers from the county seat, at an altitude of 1,900 to 2,100 meters. It's said to be the closest ecological tea plantation to Kunming, with a forest coverage rate of over 95%. The tea plantation and the forest are intertwined. It's not the typical bare terraced tea mountain, but a plantation surrounded by ancient trees, with an exceptionally good ecological environment. Admission is CNY 20, and you can wander around freely once inside. Tea picking and tea making experiences are charged separately. I arrived at 8:00 AM. The mountain was shrouded in mist, and the air was filled with the fragrance of tea and plants. Taking a deep breath felt like my lungs were being cleansed. 🌿 Step 2: Put on a small basket and be a tea picker for a day The first step of the tea plantation experience is picking tea. The staff will give you a small basket and a bamboo tray, then teach you how to pick tea—you need to pick one bud and one leaf, or one bud and two leaves. Hold the base of the tea bud with your thumb and index finger and gently pull upward; don't pinch it with your fingernails. It sounds simple, but it's really not easy to do. I picked for half an hour, and there was only a thin layer in my basket. Plus, the tea buds I picked were uneven in size—some were too old, and some were too tender. The auntie picking tea saw me being clumsy and came over to teach me with a smile. Her hand speed was like a machine; her fingers flew over the tea trees, and in no time, she had picked a full basket. She said that picking tea is skilled work that requires quick eyes, fast hands, and patience. A skilled tea picker can only pick 3 or 4 jin of fresh leaves a day, and it takes 4 or 5 jin of fresh leaves to make 1 jin of dried tea. That's when I realized how much hard work goes into every cup of tea. ☀️ Step 3: Make tea by hand, the transformation from fresh leaves to tea fragrance After picking the tea, I went to the tea-making workshop to learn from the master. The tea-making process is much more complex than I imagined, mainly involving a few steps: 1️⃣ Withering: Spread out the freshly picked leaves to let some moisture evaporate naturally. This process takes 4 to 5 hours. 2️⃣ Fixation (Shaqing): Stir-fry the fresh leaves at a high temperature to stop fermentation and stimulate the tea fragrance. This step tests craftsmanship the most, as temperature and time must be precisely controlled. I tried it, but the pan temperature was too high, and I pulled my hand back as soon as I reached in. The master said he was already used to it. 3️⃣ Rolling: Roll the fixed tea leaves into strips to let the tea juices seep out, which makes the brewed tea more flavorful. 4️⃣ Drying: Finally, dry at a low temperature, and the tea is ready. I participated in the rolling and drying processes; I really didn't dare to touch the fixation step for fear of getting burned. Watching the tea I picked turn from bright green to dark green, and from individual leaves into tea strips, the sense of achievement was indescribable. Finally, the master packed the tea I made into a small bag and gave it to me, saying it was the fruit of my own labor and would definitely taste extra fragrant when I brewed it back home. ☁️ Step 4: Hike on Jinping Mountain and watch the sea of clouds roll by After the tea-making experience, I walked up the mountain along the tea plantation trail. The trail on Jinping Mountain is well-maintained, with towering ancient trees all along the way. The tea plantation and the forest are intertwined; you can see a patch of tea plantation after walking a few steps, followed by another patch of dense forest. After walking for about 40 minutes, I reached a viewing platform. Oh my, the scenery in front of me was spectacular! Beneath my feet were rolling tea mountains, and in the distance was a surging sea of clouds. The mountain peaks appeared and disappeared in the sea of clouds like isolated islands. When the wind blows, the sea of clouds flows like waves, submerging the peaks one moment and revealing them the next, ever-changing. I stood on the viewing platform for a long time, watching the clouds roll and unfurl, feeling very small. All my worries seemed insignificant in the face of nature. 📸 Step 5: Photo ops, a guide to taking great photos at the tea plantation The tea plantation is so photogenic that any shot looks like a blockbuster. Here are a few photo tips for you: · Wear white or light-colored clothes to contrast with the green tea plantation. · A basket is the best prop; wearing it instantly gives you that vibe. · It's most beautiful in the early morning when there's fog; it's hazy and looks like a fairyland. · The ridges of the tea plantation have strong lines, which you can use for composition. · Ancient tree tea plantations have more character than ordinary ones; you must go. · -- The place I stayed that night was right inside the tea plantation, a wooden cabin hidden in the woods. When I pushed open the window, I saw layers of tea mountains. The room had a large floor-to-ceiling window with a tea table and two chairs in front of it. Sitting there brewing tea at night, with a sky full of stars outside, the wind blowing through the tea plantation making a rustling sound, and the fragrance of tea and plants mixing together, it was incredibly soothing. The cabin's decor was simple, all made of raw wood, without too much decoration. But it was this simplicity that made me feel so relaxed, like returning to my grandmother's house when I was a child. · --

"When the flower drum sounds, your feet start itching" — I only truly understood the meaning of this saying once I arrived in Tadian, Eshan. Tadian is known as the "Source of the Flower Drum." The Yi flower drum dance here has been performed for centuries; it's a cultural gene engraved in their bones. I originally just came for the scenery, but I was completely energized by a spontaneous flower drum performance. I ended up dancing for the entire afternoon—my legs were exhausted, but I was on cloud nine. In this post, I'll take you along to experience what true, authentic ethnic culture is all about 👇 🥁 Arriving in Tadian, drawn in by the sound of drums Tadian Town is about 40 kilometers from Eshan County, roughly a one-hour drive. I arrived in the afternoon. As soon as I parked the car, I heard the "thump, thump, thump" of drums in the distance, accompanied by the crisp sound of gongs and cymbals. Following the sound, I saw a group of people in traditional Yi attire dancing in the town square. The leader was a middle-aged man with a drumstick in his hand and a flower drum hanging from his waist. He was beating the drum while dancing, his movements strong and powerful. A dozen men, women, and children followed behind, holding towels and fans. They changed formations with the drumbeat—sometimes circling, sometimes lining up—their movements perfectly synchronized and incredibly impressive. I stood on the sidelines watching for a while, and before I knew it, I was hooked, my feet tapping along to the rhythm unconsciously. 💃 Pulled into the group, dancing the flower drum After a while, the man leading the dance saw me taking photos and waved at me with a smile. He said in accented Mandarin, "Young lady, come join us!" I was a bit shy at first, but I couldn't resist everyone's enthusiasm, so I was pulled into the group. At first, I couldn't keep up at all. The drumbeat was fast and intense, and the movements were complex. I was flustered and kept missing the beat. A Yi auntie next to me was very patient, teaching me as she danced: "Left foot first, then swing the towel. Yes, just like that!" After about 10 minutes, I started to get the hang of it. Although my movements weren't perfect, I could at least keep up with the rhythm. That moment was pure joy! The sound of drums, gongs, and laughter blended together. Everyone was laughing and dancing. There were no strangers, no distance—we were all just brought together by a dance. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt such pure happiness. I later learned that the flower drum dance is a traditional Yi dance that originated from sacrificial rituals. It has now become a part of festivals and daily entertainment, and Tadian's flower drum dance is even recognized as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. 🔥 Daxi Sacred Mountain, the sacred mountain of the Yi people After the dance, I chatted with some locals, and they recommended I visit Daxi Sacred Mountain. Located in Daxi Village, Tadian Town, Daxi Sacred Mountain sits at an altitude of over 2,600 meters and is considered a sacred mountain by the Yi people. There is a fire altar on the mountain, said to be where the Yi people collect their sacred fire. Every year during the Yi Torch Festival, a grand fire-lighting ceremony is held here. I drove up; the road was a bit narrow, but the scenery kept getting better. Once I reached the summit, the view opened up. Rolling mountains were shrouded in mist, and the wind was so strong it was hard to stand still. At the summit, there is a massive stone fire altar surrounded by many bamboo poles adorned with Yi prayer charms. Standing by the altar, I imagined the scene during the annual Torch Festival: crowds of people, the sacred fire ignited, and everyone singing and dancing around the bonfire. It must be an incredibly powerful sight. 🏔️ Tadian Laolong Cave, a human site from 10,000 years ago After coming down from Daxi Sacred Mountain, I visited Tadian Laolong Cave. This is an ancient human cave site dating back about 12,000 years, serving as an important site from the transition period between the Paleolithic and Neolithic ages. The entrance isn't large, but it's quite spacious inside. There are some faint markings on the rock walls, said to have been left by ancient people. Standing in the cave, imagining our ancestors living here 10,000 years ago—using fire, hunting, and making tools—was a surreal, time-traveling experience. Although there isn't much to "see" in the cave, the profound sense of history is something you can't experience anywhere else. 🌻 Other surprises in Tadian · Ten thousand acres of rapeseed flowers: From late January to February each year, the rapeseed flowers along the Tadian highway are in full bloom, creating a spectacular golden landscape · Kaixinjie Festival: On the first market day after the Spring Festival, Tadian hosts the traditional Kaixinjie Festival, featuring flower drum performances, Yi costume displays, and various folk activities. It's very lively · Yi embroidery: Tadian's Huayao Yi embroidery is famous for its exquisite patterns and vibrant colors. You can buy some as souvenirs · Alpine meadows: There are vast alpine meadows near Daxi Sacred Mountain. In the summer, the grass is lush and green, making it perfect for hiking · -- That night, I stayed at an inn run by a Yi family in Tadian Town. The house was a typical Yi earth-roof dwelling with flat roofs and earthen walls. It looked unremarkable from the outside, but it was a hidden gem inside. The courtyard was paved with bluestone slabs, and bougainvillea bloomed vibrantly in the corners. The quilt in my room smelled like sunshine and was incredibly warm. In the evening, the hosts built a fire in the courtyard, and a few neighbors sat around chatting. I joined them; even though I couldn't understand the Yi language, the warm atmosphere made me feel completely at ease. · --

Having visited many ancient towns across Yunnan, like Dali, Shaxi, and Jianshui, each with its own charm, Yao’e ancient town is truly the most unique one I’ve seen! The level of emptiness here is honestly shocking 🥺 📍Address: G357 (Jinshan Road), Shuangjiang Street, Eshan Yi Autonomous County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province 🕒 Hours: Open 24 hours year-round (best visited on sunny days for great photos) 🏮First impression of the ancient town: The buildings here are super new! The layout of nine streets and nine alleys is very orderly. Attractions like the city tower, Kuixing Pavilion, and academy are all present, showing that a lot of money was spent on building this place! 🌟Advantages: 1⃣ Renting out the entire ancient town is not a dream! No need to worry about other visitors in your photos 2⃣ Perfectly replicates Ming and Qing dynasty architectural styles, a photographer’s paradise 📸 3⃣ Clean and tidy with well-maintained infrastructure 4⃣ Excellent lighting, every shot looks like a masterpiece 😂But! The real experience is like this: ✨The whole street and alleys are deserted, you can easily cosplay as the lead in a historical drama without any pressure ✨All the shops along the street have their doors tightly shut, with shutters down one after another ✨No smell of street food, no calls from vendors ✨So quiet you can only hear your own footsteps echoing ✈️Summary of pros and cons: ✅Pros: great for a quiet solo walk | taking ancient-style portraits | getting up close with Yi ethnic architecture ❌Cons: lacks commercial atmosphere | limited supporting services | bring your own water and food 💡Tips: 1. It’s best to go with company since there are so few people 2. Wearing Hanfu or ethnic-style clothing will improve your photos 3. Bring your own snacks as dining options nearby are limited Although it’s not lively yet, this unique, ethereal beauty is actually quite captivating! Who wouldn’t love to have an entire ancient town to themselves? 🤩

📍 Yesan Guksu I visited the Yesan Guksu Cheonan Main Branch, which was absolutely perfect for hot days like these🤍 We ordered Bibim Guksu (spicy noodles), Yeolmu Guksu (young radish cold noodles), and Wang Mandu (king dumplings), and every single dish hit the spot! I really hope you try the Yeolmu Guksu in particular✨ The icy broth catches your eye right away🧊 As soon as I took my first bite, I couldn't help but say, "Wow, this is so refreshing!"😂 The tangy crunch of the young radish mixed with the deep, savory umami of the anchovy broth made me want to keep slurping the soup! With the chewy noodles paired with the crisp young radish, it was exactly what I needed when I lost my appetite in the heat👍 The Bibim Guksu was super addictive, with the sweet and spicy sauce perfectly coating the noodles, And the Wang Mandu were packed with filling, making them the perfect combo to pair with the noodles🥟 Also, I have to admit, their kimchi is top-tier…❤️ Both the young radish kimchi and cabbage kimchi were so delicious that I couldn't stop snacking on them before the noodles even arrived haha If you're looking for a satisfying, budget-friendly meal, I definitely recommend Yesan Guksu Cheonan Main Branch🙌 Recommended
