The off-season South of France is a perfect destination for introverts who enjoy long walks, like myself. I love savoring beautiful views in complete solitude, imagining that it all belongs to me alone. 😁 This time, I took a train to Le Dramont. My first stop was the deserted sandy beach of Plage du Débarquement, which offers a view of the so-called Saracen (cylindrical) tower on the private island of Île d’Or. The island, like the rest of the Esterel Massif, is made of red volcanic rock. The tower standing on it is built from this very rock. Next, I found a small secluded beach—a tiny cove where you can witness an incredible combination of colors. The pebbles and the walls of this beach are made of porphyry rock, which was also quarried nearby. The stones have shades of purple and cyan, making the place charming and magical. Then I reached the road and walked through Le Dramont to the bay of Pourrousset. A strong wind picked up, making the walk challenging as it nearly knocked me off my feet. But the sea became stunningly beautiful, a deep blue against the backdrop of the purple-red porphyry massifs. The bay gradually transitioned into Agay—a harbor nestled between Cap Dramont and Cap Baumette. A beach of golden sand, views of the Esterel Massif, and the sea. Small cozy houses and hotels, along with restaurants that undoubtedly operate during the season. However, I didn’t encounter anyone except for a New Year’s tree. Finally, I reached the place I initially set out for. Skirting Cap Baumette and walking a fair distance, I finally arrived at the bridge over the Calanque d’Anthéor. This picturesque red arched structure blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape, making the spot even cozier and more appealing.

It seems rare to find a city in the south of France where you can feel the sea so closely. Just taking a leisurely walk along the coastal path gives you a true sense of being on vacation, and simply spending time gazing at the sea near La Tour Royale was more than satisfying. Rather than the bustling vibe typical of tourist spots, the city felt more like a place where locals enjoy the sea as part of their daily lives. Compared to Nice or Marseille, it was much quieter (hardly any East Asians), making it an ideal spot for those who want to enjoy the seaside scenery in a calm atmosphere. It was easy to visit Toulon from Marseille even on a short trip, and there were plenty of great spots for photography. If you want to focus on the sea itself rather than the glitz and glamour in the south of France, Toulon is an excellent choice. It's a city I'd love to visit again on my next trip to the south.
