First, I visited Hualin Academy before heading here. Although the journey was a bit rough, I was immediately amazed upon seeing the actual structure, and couldn’t help but exclaim it was worth it. . Jimei Stone Arch was originally built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It is entirely made of bluestone, and after several hundred years, it remains well-preserved. It is one of only three surviving single-structure square stone archways from the Ming Dynasty in the country, and the only nationally protected four-sided stone arch in Jiangxi Province. In terms of completeness and exquisite carving, it is extremely rare in China, and in no way inferior to the ancient architectural masterpieces I have seen in Shanxi. 👍 . The square shape with four pillars and four sides is neat and grand. It stands 12.2 meters tall and 4.15 meters wide. Standing beneath it, you instantly feel very small. Each top side is carved with the words “Imperial Edict,” exuding a strong sense of authority. In the center is the prominent inscription “Jimei.” The lower part is engraved with the reasons for building the arch and the official titles of those honored. Looking closely, the arch is covered with exquisite carvings— figures, flowers, dragons and phoenixes, mythical beasts… all lifelike. Every detail reveals the craftsmanship of the ancients. From the differences in stone color, you can also clearly see traces of later repairs. . You can enjoy stunning water views and ride across the grasslands. This is a highly cost-effective summer escape in western Sichuan with breathtaking natural scenery. 2. Yichun Yichun is home to the vast, pristine Xiaoxing’an Mountains forest. It’s especially cool from July to August, making it a natural oxygen bar. Dense trees block the strong sun, and mountain streams flow gently, making hiking through the forest very pleasant. The city pace is relaxed, visitor numbers are low, and you can enjoy local forest cuisine. It’s an excellent northern choice to escape the heat and refresh your lungs and mind. 3. Fengxin Hidden in western Jiangxi, Fengxin is very low-key. The continuous bamboo sea of Baizhang Mountain stretches as far as the eye can see. Temperatures drop instantly when you enter the valley. Mountain springs are icy and refreshing, and the natural scenery is well preserved. Local prices are affordable. It’s a convenient short trip from Nanchang, avoiding crowded popular spots, perfect for cooling off and strolling in the mountains in July and August. 4. Xingyi The climate in July and August is mild and comfortable. The Karst peaks of Wanfenglin rise among the farmlands, creating a peaceful and healing landscape. The Malin River Canyon’s waterfalls cascade down, and the cool mist refreshes you. Life here moves slowly, local food is diverse, and expenses are reasonable. You can explore at a relaxed pace without rushing. It’s an excellent slow travel summer escape in southwestern Guizhou. 5. Arxan July and August are the most beautiful months in Arxan. The land is covered with green grass, with forests and lakes interspersed. Temperatures are cool and comfortable in the mornings and evenings, avoiding the summer heat. The scenic area is pristine and less crowded than Hulunbuir. Drive along forest roads, enjoy lakes, drifting clouds, and grassland views that soothe the soul. It’s a short drive from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, making it perfect for a summer mountain escape in July and August. Without commercial bustle, you can stay in a farmhouse, stroll along mountain streams, and enjoy a leisurely, secluded lifestyle. 7. Zhaosu Zhaosu in Ili is known as the “South of the Great Wall.” In July and August, vast fields of rapeseed flowers bloom freely. The plateau climate is cool and dry, with no stuffiness. The grasslands are flat and vast, with scenic views at every turn, ideal for self-driving trips. There are fewer tourists than in popular areas of Yining, and the local customs are simple and honest. Visiting in July and August for hiking and water activities is a perfect way to escape city noise and unwind.

Emerging from Jiuxian Hot Springs, a twenty-minute drive along the mountain road brought me to Baizhang Temple. The name Baizhang Temple originates from the Tang Dynasty monk Huaihai, who established the *Baizhang Rules of Purity* here. The saying, "No work, no food," is said to have originated from this place. I wasn't there seeking career advancement (though the rumors are indeed true), nor was I there to check off a particular spot. I simply wanted a quiet place to sit for a while after soaking in the hot springs and admiring the lake. The temple is small, nestled in a mountain valley. The incense burns slowly, and the monks sweep slowly as well. I sat for a long time on the stone steps outside the main hall, watching a sparrow hop on the roof tiles, the wind chimes under the eaves ringing crisply in the breeze. This reminded me of my mentor Nicola Clayton's concept of "Mental Time Travel"—memories aren't recorded on a film recorder; they are reconstructed each time we revisit them. I sit here, trying to place myself from last May 20th, overwhelmed by papers and deadlines, a disheveled figure in the dead of night, in the same time and space as the person sitting on the stone steps outside the main hall today.
