#mytraveldiary Sutton Hoo in Suffolk is one of the most important archaeological sites in England, offering a fascinating window into the Anglo Saxon world. This is a lovely location for a coffee. A small village situated on the Suffolk coast near Aldeburgh. It has a boating lake, cafe, restaurants and toilets as well as a tourist attraction hotel that you can see it the distance which is known as the House in the Clouds. It is easiest to visit by car however there is a bus that goes there from local bigger towns such as well known Southwold.

Today we explored Sutton Hoo, one of the most significant archaeological sites in England. Located in Suffolk, this ancient burial ground is where a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon ship was discovered—believed to belong to a powerful king, possibly King Rædwald of East Anglia. The on-site exhibition hall displays incredible artefacts (including replicas of the iconic warrior helmet, weapons, and gold treasures), giving you a glimpse into the craftsmanship and mystery of early medieval England. The real treasures are housed at the British Museum, but the storytelling at Sutton Hoo brings it all to life. 🗺️ You can also walk the burial mounds trail, with views across the River Deben, where the ship may have been hauled from. It’s a peaceful and atmospheric place, especially if you’re into history, archaeology, or nature. 🕰️ Allow 2–3 hours to explore fully. There’s a lovely café on-site and plenty of outdoor space to enjoy, even with dogs (on leads). 🎟️ Entry is free for National Trust members. #getgoing2025 Dunwich Beach, Suffolk Framed by cliffs, marshes and plant-filled heath, the windswept expanse of shingle-and-sand Dunwich Beach is the perfect wild spot for a weekend walk by the waves. While it’s close to some of Suffolk’s best-known towns such as Southwold, it feels pleasingly remote and has the added thrill of a colourful history. Dunwich was one of England’s largest towns in the 11th century, but coastal erosion saw it gradually receding into the sea. Today Britain’s Atlantis is a pretty village with a tiny museum and a dog-friendly beach with a car park and a child-friendly café with in- and outdoor tables, so it couldn’t be easier to visit.
