Cannon Cliff is the tallest and most famous cliff in New England. It is known for both its technical rock and ice climbing on its cliff face and skiing at Cannon Mountain Ski Area. This pictures were taken near Cannon Cliff Parking Area facing Profile Lake at the Trail Head Parking Franconia State Park. If you come here early the morning, you may be able to see fog coming over the foot of Cannon Mountain. Profile Lake is a 13-acre water body located in Franconia Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, at the foot of Cannon Mountain. The lake was given its name due to its location directly beneath the Old Man of the Mountain, a famous rock formation which collapsed in 2003 #fallingforfall

The trail is easy to hike but be sure to keep an eye out for the Buff signs as we missed it the first time we passed there. We did it without hiking sticks and overall took around 1 hour to go up and 45 mins to come down. Once you are at the top, the view of Cannon Mountain and the valley below is so worth it. We love the calming water of Echo Lake and the fall foliage adding peace and tranquility to the whole surrounding area. It is one of the best place to catch fall foliage in New England. #fallingforfall

This natural gorge at the base of Mount Liberty in New Hampshire is much-visited and one of many cool things to do in The Granite State. Speaking of granite, the gorge walls are as tall as 90-feet in some places and are composed of Conway granite. The flume trail is a two-mile stretch of hiking pathway that includes inclined sections as well as many stairways. Along the boardwalk, hikers can check out flower, fern, and moss growth. One of the keenest features of Flume Gorge is the Flume Covered Bridge. Built in 1886, the bridge has been restored several times since then. Other notable features of Flume Gorge include Table Rock, a 500-foot section of granite, Avalanche Falls, a 45-foot waterfall, Liberty Gorge, a cascading mountain stream, and Wolf Den, a passageway only accessible on your hands and knees. One of the park’s most exciting and adventurous features is the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, the first North American passenger tramway which opened in 1938. The Alpine Garden is the 0.3 mi shoulder on Lafayette's east face where Diapensia lapponica and Sphagnum pad the cairned path and the wind-scoured ledges hold fog 50% of summer mornings. I parked at the Lafayette Place lot on I-93 Exit 34B (AMC Cannon lot $5 cash/ $10 card in 2026, Lafayette Place free but fills by 6:30 a.m. on weekends), started 6:50 a.m. in July. The mossy bit is the first 0.5 mi of Falling Waters where the trail crosses the Cloudland Falls brook and Hypnum pads the granite slab — then again on the Alpine Garden ledge at 4,800 ft where the tundra mosses mix with Racomitrium. Above treeline the AMC rule is strict: cairns only, step on rock, the alpine garden moss is 5,000-yr-old community, one misstep = 20-yr scar. Mistake: I started at 9 a.m. in July — afternoon thunderstorm standard on the Presidentials, got pinned under Lincoln's lee at 1 p.m. for 40 min in hail, descended in lightning risk. Dawn start. Second mistake: I carried 1.5 L — drank 3 L by Lafayette, ran dry on Old Bridle Path, 90 min of rationing. 3 L. Third: I paid $10 card at Cannon lot thinking it covered Lafayette Place — different lot, had to move the car at 6:40, lost the last space, parked 1 mi down, added 2 mi. Buy in Lincoln: a $6 breakfast burrito at the Country Store, not the $19 ski-resort café. Gear: 3 L water, $200 boots, $150 hard shell, $40 poles — ridge wind 50 mph. Local rule: no loop permit, AMC lot $5–10, White Mountain NF no day fee, no drones, stay on cairns above treeline. The moss on the Alpine Garden ledge is the Presidentials' lung — step on rock. Opinion: Franconia Ridge is the 8.9 mi crown of the Whites; the mossy Alpine Garden shoulder is the 10-min half people photograph from 10 ft away without kneeling. Should AMC add a 2-line "why this moss matters" plaque at the Garden, or keep the cairns silent? I'd plaque it. Would you hike 3,900 ft of gain for 10 min on a 5,000-yr-old moss ledge?

#easytravelpost New Hampshire’s Franconia Ridge is the most dangerous “easy to reach” hike I have done. I parked at the Old Bridle Path trailhead near Lafayette Place on Route 93, arrived at 6:30 a.m., and still shared the lot with twenty cars. No cash needed; the White Mountains lots take card or require a seasonal pass displayed. The standard loop is Old Bridle Path to Greenleaf Hut, then up the Greenleaf Trail to Lafayette, along the Franconia Ridge Trail over Lincoln, down Falling Waters Trail past three waterfalls. About 8.5 miles, 3,800 feet of gain. The Alpine Garden section between Lafayette and Lincoln is a delicate cushion of diapensia and laurel at 5,000 feet, roped off in places to protect the plants. The ridge itself is exposed, wind-scoured, and can drop from sunny to whiteout in twenty minutes even in August. I wore trail runners, a wind shell, a puffy, and gloves. At the summit it was 38°F with 40 mph gusts. People in cotton hoodies were hypothermic by Lincoln. Mistake: I underestimated descent time on Falling Waters. The rocks are wet, the roots slick, and the waterfalls tempt you to stop too long while your legs cool. Poles are mandatory on the way down. Also, the AMC hut sells water and snacks but takes card only and closes early; do not rely on it. If a ridgeline hike can kill you in summer, should New England label these “moderate” or force a harder rating system?

It offers hikers moderate exercise and incredible natural beauty. This trail is a perfect way to experience the stunning landscapes, especially during the fall season when the mountains turn red and yellow—what a wonderful view! The trail itself is a 1.5-mile loop, making it accessible for hikers of various skill levels. We spent around 30 minutes reaching the top, and it was worth every second of the hike. Sitting on the rock at the top of the mountain and staring at the view of the blue lake surrounded by the red and yellow mountains was one of the most breathtaking sights we have ever seen in our lives. So pack your camera, lace up your hiking boots, and set out to explore the Artist Bluff Trail—you won’t be disappointed.
