Funen travel guide and discussion

As a classic leisure route in Denmark, the island of Fünger is full of Nordic style and tranquility. This time I specifically chose one of the historical pearls of Funen - Nyborg. Known as the "Old King's City", this small town, the ancient city walls, the guard wall and the red brick church together create a rich historical color, especially suitable for travelers who want to experience the leisurely life of a European town. Strolling through the quaint streets with golden autumn leaves, you are completely immersed in the romance of time travel. Recommended tour routes: It is recommended to start in the city center, first to Nyborg Castle to feel the history of the old kingdom of Denmark, grand appearance, very photo-fitting. Afterwards, you can walk slowly along the Volden embankment, which is lined with autumn forests and classical architecture. Remember to pay more attention to the ground, chestnuts will appear quietly in autumn, very treasure hunting feeling, photography plus small prey is especially fun. On the way, you can admire ancient churches, castle moats and antique dwellings and savor Nordic tranquility. Must-play items and photo spots: The exterior walls of Nyborg Castle, the Fallen Walk of Volden’s moat, the old church gate, the reflective shadows on both sides of the moat, and the street sporadic traditional Cafe. Every corner is perfect for taking beautiful photos, it's really hipster no matter how you take them. Game Tips: 1. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the ancient city is a little bumpy. 2. Go in the fall and still have a chance to pick up fresh chestnuts, but be careful to choose the right place, do not enter the private garden range. 3. The weather is cooler, remember to wear enough clothing, especially after nightfall colder. 4. It is recommended to reserve half a day to a day to walk slowly. Notes: · Coffee shops and restaurants in the small town of Fiing Island have early opening hours, mostly closed at 9 or 10 pm. If you want to eat, remember to arrange early. · Most attractions are open free of charge, but visiting the castle is recommended to check the opening hours. · Public transportation is not frequent, it is recommended to check the bus and train timetable. Self-driving is more convenient and flexible. Conclusion Topic: It turns out that Denmark has so many quiet town options, slow life journey and Nordic autumn colors do you like? #Fien Island #Danishtown #AutumnTravel #SlowLifeEurope #Nordic Style

Denmark has Copenhagen and Aarhus. But in the heart of Funen lies a city that feels like a story waiting to be told. Odense is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the father of the fairy tale. Its old town is a maze of cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and hidden courtyards. The river winds through it. Here is how to explore this hidden Danish gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Old Town at Dawn: Cobblestones and Quiet Odense's old town is a tangle of narrow lanes, crooked houses, and flower-filled squares. By 9 AM, the tour groups arrive. Come at 6:30 AM instead. The light is soft. The cobblestones are damp. You will walk through streets that Hans Christian Andersen himself wandered, with only the sound of your footsteps and the distant coo of pigeons. It feels like stepping into one of his stories. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Odense. It shows you the quietest routes through the old town and the hidden courtyards. The best photos are from the riverbank at sunrise, when the half-timbered houses reflect in the water. 2. The Hans Christian Andersen House: A Poet's Home The house where Hans Christian Andersen was born is now a museum. It tells the story of his life, from his humble beginnings to his fame as one of the world's greatest storytellers. The exhibits are immersive and emotional. You will see his manuscripts, his drawings, and the world he created. Come early. The museum fills quickly, and the quiet hours are the best. Money Hack: Buy your ticket on Trip.com before you go. The museum is popular, and booking online saves time. Some packages include a walking tour of the Andersen sites around the city. 3. The River Walk: A Green Escape The Odense River winds through the city, lined with parks, gardens, and quiet paths. The walk is peaceful and green. Swans glide on the water. Locals picnic on the banks. It is a side of Odense that most tourists miss. Come in the afternoon. The light is golden, and the parks are alive. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive boat tours. The river walk is free and beautiful. Rent a bike and explore at your own pace. Check Trip.com for a "Odense Bike Guide" that shows you the best routes and the hidden spots. The guide includes stops at the city's best bakeries. 4. Food That Tastes Like Funen Funen food is simple and fresh. Try Brunsviger — a sticky caramel cake, a local specialty. Order Smørrebrød — open-faced sandwiches on rye bread. And do not miss Local Beer — Odense has its own breweries, and the beers are excellent. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants on the main square. Walk into the side streets and find Sortebro Kro or Under Lindetræet, where locals eat. The food is fresh, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a slice of brunsviger when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the old town. Look for something on Nedergade or near the river. You will sleep in a half-timbered room with a small garden, the sound of the river at night, and the scent of fresh bread in the morning. The evenings are quiet, and the stars are bright. Conclusion: Odense is not a place you rush through. It is a place you wander. It is a city of cobblestones and fairy tales, of rivers and roses. It is a place where the past is present in every lane. Denmark is a country of design and hygge, but Odense is its storytelling heart. Come and walk the streets at dawn. The fairy tales are waiting. #trip_com #Denmark #Odense #odensetravel #DenmarkHiddenGems #Funen #HansChristianAndersenn #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #traveldenmark #FairyTaleCity #OldTownOdense #DanishHeritage #HyggeLife #HiddenScandinavia

If there’s a city where you can experience a medieval castle, a water garden maze, riverside picnics, and a full cycling greenway—all at once—would you be willing to spend the entire July there? 📍 First, find out where this city is Funen Island, Denmark’s second-largest island, lies between Zealand, where Copenhagen is located, and the Jutland Peninsula. The island’s main city has been around for over a thousand years, its name derived from the Nordic mythological “Odin’s temple.” It’s a 75-minute train ride from Copenhagen and just 1 hour 40 minutes from Aarhus. The island has a well-developed road network. Driving from the big cities across the sea bridge offers scenic views that make you want to stop and take photos at any moment. 🏰 Main attraction | A full day at the water castle Egeskov Castle, 30 minutes by car from the city center, is the most worthwhile spot on Funen Island to spend a whole day. Built in 1554, this Renaissance water castle is ranked among Europe’s 50 most beautiful castles and is the only one from Denmark on the list. The castle stands in the middle of a small lake, supported by oak piles, with the deepest part reaching 5 meters. Its double-layer walls are over 1 meter thick, hiding secret staircases and hidden wells—defensive structures from over 400 years ago that you can now walk through and touch. Inside, the castle displays centuries of noble life: quill pens still in ink bottles in the study, velvet drapes hanging to the floor in the bedrooms. But what truly captivates visitors is the vast garden outside. Shrub mazes, high suspension bridges, canopy walkways, vegetable gardens, hammock areas—each corner offers a different experience. Open in summer from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with some days extended to 10:00 PM. Adult tickets cost about 229 DKK. Plan to spend 4 to 5 hours—you really can’t see it all in less time. How to get there: Take a local train from the city center station to Ringe station, a 25-minute ride. From there, transfer to bus 920 for about 20 minutes, then walk 10 minutes to the castle entrance. You can also buy a combined ticket directly on the DSB app, so you don’t have to worry about transfers. 🌾 Funen Village | Step back to the 19th century in a second Three kilometers south of the city is an open-air museum—Funen Village—consisting of 26 historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Cottages, workshops, mills, schools, churches, and even a jail have all been relocated from across Funen Island to recreate the most authentic Danish rural life scenes. Open in summer from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tickets cost 145 DKK. Craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills on site: blacksmithing, weaving, and baking rye bread in wood-fired ovens. Walking on gravel paths under straw roofs, with stone gutters at your feet and the scent of grass and firewood in the air, you feel like time has forgotten you. Plan 2 to 3 hours here, which can be combined with the castle visit on the same day. 🛶 Riverside picnic | A local summer ritual The Odense River stretches 60 kilometers, winding like a green ribbon through the city center. The most authentic summer activity isn’t taking a boat tour but renting a small kayak yourself, starting near Monk’s Pier, and paddling slowly along the river. When you reach a wide river bay, find a grassy spot to dock, spread a blanket, and enjoy prepared Danish rye sandwiches and chilled elderflower drinks—this is the classic local summer afternoon. Swans occasionally swim past the boat, and church spires peek through the treetops in the distance. If you don’t want to kayak, there are dedicated walking and cycling greenways along the river, extending from the city center park to the southern forest suburbs. The entire route is flat and easy, even suitable for pushing a stroller. 🎭 Summer exclusive | Street fairy tale theater From late June to mid-August, the old town’s streets host roaming fairy tale performances. Professional actors dressed in 19th-century costumes perform impromptu Andersen stories in squares, alleys, and on river bridges—the little match girl crouches on church steps lighting a match, and the emperor’s new clothes “parade” in front of city hall. There’s no fixed schedule; it’s all about chance encounters. But Wednesday and Saturday afternoons are the main performance days. Check the local tourism office’s weekly announcements for show locations and arrive early to get a good spot. Completely free and standing is fine. ⛪ Must-see for architecture lovers | St. Canute’s Cathedral and city hall St. Canute’s Cathedral in the city center was built in the 13th century. Its red brick Gothic spire is the highest point on the city skyline. Inside, you’ll find exquisite altar carvings and stained glass windows. The crypt holds King Canute, who was assassinated in 1086. Free to visit, open all day in summer. Plan about 20 minutes. A five-minute walk leads to the city hall square, where the “Little Mermaid” sculpture is very different from Copenhagen’s—more abstract and contemporary, perfect for a photo op. 🏡 The right way to stay in the old town The preferred accommodation area is the old town core, where all major attractions are within a 10-minute walk. Many spaces here are converted historic buildings. Open a wooden window to colorful gables and cobblestone streets. Waking up to church bells in the morning feels truly Nordic. July is peak season, so book at least 5 to 6 weeks in advance. For a quieter stay, choose the residential area across the river. Open your window to water views, and enjoy evening riverside walks back to your lodging without needing extra transport. 💡 Quick practical info · Currency: Danish krone (DKK). 1 CNY ≈ 0.96 DKK. Almost all places accept card payments · Language: Danish mainly, English widely spoken · Time difference: 6 hours behind Beijing time (daylight saving time) · Summer temperature: 15–25°C, with big temperature swings between day and night. Bring a light windbreaker · Drinking water: Tap water is safe to drink, no need to buy bottled water · Charging: European two-round-pin plugs. Remember to bring an adapter

In July, the Nordic sun shines ridiculously long, still bright at 10 PM—this is the perfect time to visit a small town hidden on Funen Island and spend a whole day wandering slowly. 🚂 How to get there? Full transportation guide Departing from Copenhagen Central Station, the DSB intercity train takes about 75 minutes. A second-class ticket costs around 320 DKK, with departures every half hour. You can also check real-time schedules on Rejseplanen and buy reserved-seat tickets for peace of mind. If you’re on a budget, FlixBus offers cheaper long-distance buses. Booking a week in advance can get you an early bird price of 79 DKK. The trip takes about two hours, and the drop-off point is right next to the city bus hub, with a QR code for ticket purchase at the stop, making entry and exit smooth. Once in the city, the modern tram that started operating in 2022 is the best way to get around—the 14.5 km line runs through 26 stops from south to north, connecting the old town center, riverfront docks, train station, and northern new district in one line. A single ticket costs 22 DKK. Just tap your card or scan a code when boarding. Riding the full route takes just over 20 minutes. 🏛️ Kengo Kuma’s fairytale box The city’s soul landmark is the new Hans Christian Andersen Museum, completed in 2021. Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the 5,600 m² space is divided into a rooftop garden and underground exhibition halls, wrapped in curved cedar wood slats. Light filters through the gaps like the pages of an open storybook. Inside, 18 themed exhibition rooms unfold along a timeline, displaying over 2,000 manuscripts, paper cuttings, letters, and multilingual first editions. The underground level features an immersive light and shadow space where projections change with footsteps, and as you walk, a flower field grows beneath your feet. 💡 Practical tip: Tickets cost 165 DKK and include access to the main museum, childhood home, and the tinderbox experience center. Admission is free for those under 17. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in summer, closed on Mondays. It’s best to book your entry time online in advance, as queues at the ticket window can be long during peak season. Allow at least three hours to explore the whole museum without rushing. 🧱 Old times in the cobblestone alley A three-minute walk south from the museum leads to the mustard-yellow gabled old street. With ocher-red roofs and cobblestone pavement, the street preserves its 19th-century look. The low doorframes make even tall visitors duck. At the corner is the childhood home with just two rooms, where Andersen’s mother once earned a living by doing laundry. Next door, the tinderbox experience center is the hottest spot in summer, featuring a wall full of fairytale costumes and props. You can dress up in a king’s cloak or swan wings and take photos with themed lighting. 🚢 Drift along the fairytale river In summer, the must-do is a boat ride on the Odense River. Departing from Munk Wharf, the small boat slowly drifts along the winding river, flanked by neatly trimmed hedges and flower-filled private gardens. The best part is that on certain summer trips, Hans Christian Andersen characters join the boat, and live actors perform fairytale scenes along the riverbanks—the ugly duckling waddles on the grass, the tin soldier stands motionless on a bridge pier, creating a vivid scene. The trip lasts about 40 minutes and costs around 120 DKK. Afternoon departures at 3 or 4 PM are recommended, when the sunlight slants on the water and the whole river glows. 🎨 Explore the Brandts district A 10-minute walk north from the old town brings you to the Brandts art district. This creative area, transformed from an old textile factory, is now the city’s most vibrant spot. The red brick buildings house independent galleries, design studios, and vinyl record shops, with large graffiti murals on the exterior walls. On summer weekends, open-air markets fill the streets with handmade ceramics, vintage jewelry, and locally made scented candles. When tired, sit on a bench in the courtyard square, watch street musicians play guitar, and enjoy a glass of local Danish craft beer for ultimate relaxation. 🚲 Unlock the city by bike Denmark is the kingdom of bicycles, and this city has cycling culture in its DNA. Public bike rental stations are everywhere downtown. Just scan a code to ride, with the first two hours free. Riding along the Odense River is the most pleasant route—from the city park heading south, passing tree-lined paths and meadows, with grazing cows and sheep and wildflower-covered fields on both sides. A half-hour ride takes you to the forest entrance on the city outskirts. The city is compact, and a day of cycling can cover all the main spots. 🏡 Rest stop recommendation For accommodation, choose somewhere within walking distance of the old town. Many spaces are renovated from century-old houses, preserving original wooden beams and sloped roofs, with windows opening onto cobblestone alleys. Summer is peak season, so book at least a month in advance. If your budget allows, opt for a room with a courtyard garden. Sitting in the yard with a coffee at dusk, you’ll see the unreal, crystal-clear Nordic sunset. 💰 Daily per-person expense estimate Transportation round trip about 400 DKK. Museum combo ticket 165 DKK. Boat ride 120 DKK. Lunch about 150 DKK. Cycling free. ≈ Total about 835 DKK, roughly RMB 870, adjustable to your budget.

#footballmatchfoodmap South of central Odense (Hans Christian Andersen’s city, on the island of Funen / Fyn), the Hjallese district transitions quickly into rolling farmland, riding schools, and equestrian clubs — a quieter, more pastoral Denmark. Tucked near one such stable is a modest riding-school café (often volunteer-run, serving coffee and homemade cakes to parents and riders), which during the World Cup sometimes tunes a small TV to the matches — especially if Denmark is playing, or for morning kick-offs in the Americas. I visited on a crisp afternoon for an early group-stage game: ordered a slice of “hestebrugskage” — literally “horse-club cake,” a dense, buttery pound cake made with local butter and sometimes cardamom, served with a generous dollop of whipped cream — and a mug of hot cocoa (the real stuff, not powdered). The TV was perched on a high shelf near the coat racks; a few regulars — a retired riding instructor, a mother braiding a child’s hair — glanced up at key moments. When Denmark scored, the room offered soft claps and a “goddag” to the screen. Outside, a horse neighed in the paddock; the pace was gentle, almost pastoral-sacred. Odense is 1h 15m by train from Copenhagen; stay in the city center near Hans Christian Andersen Hus (€80–€140). I recommend this café because it’s the antidote to spectacle — football as a background rhythm to rural life, watched over cake and cocoa among people who measure time in seasons, not stoppages. That’s a slow, earthy, unexpectedly touching #footballmatchfoodmap dot on the Isle of Funen.

#footballmatchfoodmap At the far, quieter end of Vestergade, Odense’s main pedestrian artery that bleeds into the shopping district, there’s a converted old mikrobryggeri (micro‑brewery) space—exposed red brick, copper piping along the bar back, fermentation tanks repurposed as table bases, and a faint, lingering malt sweetness in the air. They keep a sizable 50" screen above the draft handles and reliably broadcast World Cup matches, especially if Denmark or Germany are playing. I stopped in for a round‑of‑16 tie: ordered Odense Ribben—slow‑roasted pork ribs glazed with a dark Funen‑ale reduction, sticky and falling off the bone, served with coarse mustard and thick‑cut fries—and a Fyn Bryg (local Funen pilsner/lager, often from Albani Bryggerierne, though they rotate taps). The place was half‑full of off‑duty shipyard workers from the Lindø area and local uni students; when a Danish midfielder cracked a long‑range shot, the room gave a unified, guttural “Ja!!” that rattled the copper pipes. The industrial aesthetic—concrete floors, Edison bulbs—grounds the match in something earthier than the café scene; this is Odense’s working‑class football soul. Odense’s Banegårdspladsen (station square) is a 10‑minute walk; if you’re basing here, the Clarion Collection Hotel Plaza or smaller B&Bs near Dalumvej are solid. I recommend this bar because Vestergade’s tail often gets overlooked by tourists hustling to the museum, but it holds one of the city’s most authentic sports‑plus‑craft‑beer intersections—rib‑grease on your fingers, malt in your glass, and a World Cup match humming above a 19th‑century brick shell. That’s a copper‑toned, unpretentious #footballmatchfoodmap stop on Funen.
