Have you ever had that feeling—being suddenly blown away in a place that isn't very famous? That is the experience Fuxin's Haitang Mountain gave me. ⛰ First, a fun fact Fuxin, in western Liaoning, is often thought of as a "coal city" by many. That's right, it was once a "coal and power city." But this city hides another side: Tibetan Buddhist stone carving art, 8,000-year-old prehistoric civilization, the grassland closest to the sea... These things put together form a severely underrated treasure in western Liaoning. ⛰ Haitang Mountain | Carved into stone for 300 years Haitang Mountain is about 20+ kilometers from downtown Fuxin and is the main peak of the Yiwulu Mountain range. The name sounds gentle, but "Haitang" is actually a transliteration of the Mongolian "Haitaiyinwule," meaning "mountain of the watchtower." There are no crabapple trees on the mountain, but there is something more precious than crabapple flowers— 267 well-preserved Qing Dynasty cliff statues. During the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, a Living Buddha from Tibet brought his disciples here to preach and began carving Buddha statues into the natural granite. It spanned six generations of Living Buddhas and over 300 years. The largest statue is 5 meters high, and the smallest is only 15 centimeters. Walking on the mountain trails, you might come face-to-face with a Buddha statue around any turn— Some with kind eyes, some with fierce expressions, some sitting on lotus flowers, some lying on their sides. After 300 years of wind and rain, the colors haven't even faded completely, and the exquisite craftsmanship makes you gasp. My advice: Hire a guide or do your homework beforehand, otherwise you'll easily "skim the surface" and miss the details. Next to the statues are inscriptions in Mongolian, Tibetan, Manchu, and Chinese, which is very rare. ⛰ Pu'an Temple | The "Little Potala Palace" hidden in the mountains At the foot of Haitang Mountain lies Pu'an Temple, built in 1683. This temple is an important center for the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism in the east; it's not huge in scale but has a solemn layout. The Cuoqin Hall is the core building, blending Tibetan, Han, and Mongolian architectural styles. The Buddha statues and thangkas enshrined inside are quite old. When I went, I caught the monks chanting; the deep, low sounds echoed in the hall, and at that moment, I truly felt calm. ⛰ Ruiying Temple | The largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in western Liaoning After leaving Haitang Mountain, you can stop by Ruiying Temple on the way. It was built in the 8th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty and was historically as famous as the Yonghe Temple, known as the "Eastern Tibet." The current Ruiying Temple was restored later, but the scale is still magnificent. Prayer flags flutter in the wind, and the white pagodas are lined up, looking very impressive from a distance. ⛰ Chahai Site | The "First Dragon of China" from 8,000 years ago This spot is a bit off the beaten path, but I think it's very worth it. The Chahai site dates back about 8,000 years and unearthed what is considered the earliest dragon-shaped sculpture in China—a "dragon" nearly 20 meters long piled up with stones. It's more than 2,000 years older than the jade dragon of the Hongshan culture. The museum isn't big, but the exhibits are clearly presented. After seeing it, you'll have a whole new understanding of the "origin of the dragon." ⛰ Accommodation I found a courtyard-style room built against the mountain at the foot of Haitang Mountain. It had a blue brick and gray tile exterior, but when I pushed the door open, it had floor heating and warm wooden interiors. The courtyard faces the valley, and in the morning, you can hear all kinds of birds chirping in the forest. In the evening, sitting on a stone bench in the courtyard, watching the distant ridgeline outlined in gold by the setting sun, with the wind blowing through the pine forest carrying the fresh scent of grass and trees, the fatigue of the day just melted away. ⛰ Tips for around Haitang Mountain Transportation: It takes about half an hour by taxi or chartered car from downtown Fuxin; there is no direct public transport. Tickets: The entrance fee is not expensive; it is recommended to buy a package that includes a guide. Physical requirements: The mountain is not steep; the whole walk takes 2–3 hours and is suitable for all ages. Best time for photos: 9:00–10:00 AM, when the sunlight hits the cliff statues just right. Nearby connections: Haitang Mountain + Pu'an Temple + Ruiying Temple can be arranged on the same day. Fuxin isn't the kind of city that makes you go "wow, so beautiful," it's the kind of city that makes you go "hmm, there's something here." The stone carvings of Haitang Mountain, the scriptures of Pu'an Temple, the stone dragon of Chahai—these things that have been silent for thousands of years are more powerful than any viral photo spot.
