Haitangshan: When a 300-year-old faith is carved into the rocks of Yiwulü Mountain Southeast of Fumeng County, a ridge rises from the remnants of Yiwulü Mountain. The mountain isn’t very tall, with its main peak just over 700 meters, but the exposed granite across the slopes gives it a striking, rugged look. Parking outside the mountain gate, the first thing you encounter walking along the trail isn’t the scenery but a profound quiet. This quiet isn’t the loneliness of an empty place but a stillness filtered through ancient pines and rocks, carrying the scent of sandalwood. Puan Temple sits in an open area at the foot of the mountain, its golden roof and red walls standing out vividly against the lush greenery. The main hall’s roof is covered with gilded copper tiles, glowing warmly under the midday sun. I didn’t linger long in front of the hall but instead followed the mountain path upward—the soul of Haitangshan isn’t inside the temple but scattered across the mountain’s rocks. In 1683, a monk from Tibet arrived here with disciples to spread Buddhist teachings, beginning the carving of Buddha statues on the naturally shaped granite formations. For more than a century after, the sound of chiseling never ceased. Today, 267 well-preserved statues remain on the mountain, ranging from 15 centimeters to 5 meters tall. They are scattered from the foot to the summit, some perched atop huge boulders, others hidden in rock crevices.
