Hidden among farmhouses, it is a low-key yet artistically valuable ancient Buddhist temple. Its initial construction date is unknown, but the main hall was rebuilt in the seventh year of the Jin Dynasty's Dading era (1167). It was named after the iron Buddha statue cast there. Major repairs were carried out during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, and further construction continued in the Qing Dynasty. Now a national key cultural relics protection unit (8th batch), it features a single-courtyard layout covering approximately 892 square meters. The main hall houses 27 Ming Dynasty painted clay sculptures, including Shakyamuni Buddha, Manjushri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattvas, and the Twenty-Four Devas. The most famous are the Twenty-Four Devas, whose exaggerated, vivid, and powerful forms, intricate drapery, and strong visual impact have earned it the reputation of being a masterpiece of ancient Chinese painted clay sculpture. It gained immense popularity after being featured in the game *Black Myth: Wukong*, and is currently open to the public in limited numbers.

#February Destinations 2026 Gaoping Skull Temple is located in Gukou Village (formerly known as Kutou Village), Gaoping City, Jincheng City, Shanxi Province, at the foot of Head Mountain. It is the only temple in China dedicated to the spirits of those who died in war. Originally built in the eleventh year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (723 AD), it was commissioned by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang after he witnessed the devastation of the Battle of Changping and ordered the construction of this temple to commemorate the 400,000 Zhao soldiers who were massacred by Qin general Bai Qi. The temple was renamed "Shengyuan Valley" (meaning "Valley of Repentance"). Originally, it housed a statue of the Skull King, but during the Ming Dynasty, statues of Zhao Kuo and his wife were added (it was also known as the Zhao King Temple). The existing Qing Dynasty architecture consists of a courtyard with a main hall, side rooms, wing rooms, and a gate, and contains inscriptions recording Ming and Qing Dynasty renovations. Who says ancient people didn’t understand art? This is the ultimate expression of the aesthetic ceiling～ 🌟 440 Years of Artistic Miracle 🌟 Guanyin Hall was built in 1581 (the 9th year of the Wanli reign in the Ming Dynasty), funded by local wealthy patrons～ Crossing four and a half centuries to stand before you, this is no ordinary temple, but a breathing, colorful three-dimensional art museum! 💫 Visual Feast Warning 💫 Inside this small hall of just dozens of square meters are over 500 colorful clay sculptures! (Those with trypophobia beware! 📍Longfengshan Qianfodong in Hancheng was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Hancheng City in 1998. This protected site deep in the mountains is not even well known to the locals. 🌟That early morning, we first went to Fawang Temple in Xizhuang Village outside the ancient city of Hancheng. At the entrance, we met two enthusiastic local uncles. Upon learning that we were ancient architecture enthusiasts, they suggested taking us to see the little-known Longfengshan Qianfodong stone carvings deep in the mountains. It was truly an unexpected and fateful encounter. 🌟The distance from Xizhuang Village to Longfengshan is actually quite far. The two local uncles said that every October, the mountains are covered in red leaves, which is the most stunning time of the year. 📍We parked by the roadside and still had to climb a path to reach the site. Along the way, there is a paifang (archway) inscribed by Yan Wu, honorary chairman of the Hancheng Artists Association and a famous landscape painter: 👉The horizontal plaque reads “Qianfodong” (Thousand Buddha Cave) 👉The couplet reads “True enlightenment leads to the Pure Land” and “Do no harm, so the world is peaceful.” 📍At the entrance of Qianfodong stands a crooked stone stele titled “Record of the Renovation of Kaihua Temple’s Longfengshan Wanfodong,” erected in the 14th year of the Ming Chenghua era (1478). Some characters are already damaged. 📍Longfengshan Qianfodong is not an isolated grotto but the lower courtyard of the Tang Dynasty ancient Kaihua Temple. Kaihua Temple is divided into upper and lower courtyards; the upper courtyard is the main temple, and the lower courtyard is the current Qianfodong located on the mountainside of Longfengshan. Monks from Kaihua Temple usually come here to worship Buddha, chant sutras, and practice. ✅The statues inside Qianfodong are numerous and neatly arranged. Though their elegance is not severely diminished, they have suffered heavy human damage, with most heads chiseled off, which is very heartbreaking. Faintly visible are: 1️⃣A group of one Buddha and two Bodhisattvas, see photo 1. The central figure is Shakyamuni Buddha, seated cross-legged on a lotus throne, making the meditation mudra. On the left and right are Manjushri Bodhisattva and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, adorned with necklaces, also seated cross-legged on lotus thrones. The lotus thrones rest on square vajra pedestals with exquisite floral decorations. Many small seated Buddhas surround them. 2️⃣A reclining Shakyamuni Nirvana statue, see photo 2. The reclining Buddha inside the cave lies on his right side, a standard depiction of Shakyamuni’s parinirvana, with a peaceful posture and flowing robes, located on the middle level. Behind the reclining Buddha stand disciples listening to the Dharma and guardian figures, flanked on both sides.
