In 1997, a treaty was signed to ban the use of anti-personnel mines, known as the Ottawa Treaty or Mine Ban Treaty. At the same time, in order to encourage countries to sign the treaty and stop the use of mines, the non-governmental organization Handicap International commissioned Swiss inventor Daniel Berset to create a broken chair to attract victims of mines. The result is a 12-meter-high, 5.5-tonne sculpture with its left leg broken in half now standing over the Place des Nations.
