Karelia/First Trip
Karelia is a stunning region in Russia, renowned for its natural wealth, unique history, and cultural heritage. Often called the "land of a thousand lakes," it boasts over 60,000 lakes and approximately 27,000 rivers.
What to explore on your own:
📍Start your journey in Petrozavodsk, the capital of the republic.
· Stroll along the Onega Lake embankment (photo 16).
· Take a boat trip to Kizhi Island, located on Lake Onega, featuring a remarkable architectural ensemble of churches and a bell tower from the 17th–19th centuries.
📍Paanajärvi National Park (photos 1-8).
Note that access to the park requires permission from its administration. You can obtain a permit and voucher at the visitor center in Pyaozersky village, located at: ul. Druzhby, 32 (Operating hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM).
Accommodation:
The park offers:
· Guest cabins: Wooden houses without urban amenities (outdoor toilets, showers in the sauna). Suitable for groups of 3 to 16 people. Sauna use is included in the accommodation fee.
· Tent sites: Equipped areas with fire pits.
It’s recommended to book accommodations in advance, especially during the summer season.
The park features hiking, water-hiking, and snowmobile routes.

· Vartiolampi - Arola
· Paanajärvi Lake (boat rentals available).
How to get there: From Loukhi village (on the St. Petersburg–Murmansk highway), drive approximately 110 km west to Pyaozersky village, then another 59 km on a dirt road to the park.
📍Ladoga Skerries (photos 11-13)— clusters of small rocky islands closely packed together along the shore. Lake Ladoga features hundreds of such islands, forming a unique landscape complex.
How to explore the skerries:
1. Rent a boat with a guide.
2. SUP board tours for active adventurers.
3. Boat rentals for those who prefer independent exploration of the water labyrinths.
Key locations:
1. Aino Rock and Ram’s Foreheads — picturesque rock formations typical of the skerry landscape.
2. Water labyrinths of Pyatidvorki — winding channels between islands, creating the feeling of navigating a natural maze.
3. Koyonsaari Island (photo 12):
· Accessible for hiking;
· Features a beach and Hiisi Rock — great spots for photography and relaxation.
4. Honkasalo Island:
· The shortest route (about 2 hours);
· Located half an hour’s drive from Sortavala.
📍Ruskeala Mountain Park.
A former marble quarry turned into one of Karelia’s main attractions. Visitors can explore a canyon with rocky shores and an artificial mountain lake, a stone park, a rope park, a zipline, Catherine II’s cliff, an illuminated underground lake, grottoes, as well as walking, boating, and underground routes.
📍Near Ruskeala, you can visit the famous Ahinkoski (Ahvenkoski) waterfalls, located 5 km from the park.
📍Valaam — an archipelago with a settlement on Lake Ladoga. Surrounded by cliffs, forests, and tiny islands, it houses the Valaam Monastery, churches, and hermitages.
How to get there: Most visitors take a one-day tour on a "Meteor" boat. "Meteors" to Valaam depart from Sortavala and Priozersk.
📍Belomorsk Petroglyphs.
These are preserved rock carvings from the primitive era.
Location: The famous "Besovy Sledki" near Shoiruksha Island, further away is Erpin Pudas. The largest collection of drawings can be found in Zalavruga.
📍Paaso Hillfort.
Located 3 km from Sortavala, this site was a Karelian hillfort in the 12th–13th centuries. Today, it’s more of a natural attraction with beautiful viewpoints.
📍Vottovaara Mountain.
One of Karelia’s most mysterious places, situated among swamps at an elevation of 417 meters above sea level.
How to get there:
· A tourist train runs from Sortavala to Gimolskaya station. From there, it’s just over 30 km on a rough dirt road to Vottovaara.
· By car with high suspension.
· With local assistance. From Gimol, you can reach the mountain via a private driver’s UAZ "Bukhanka."
📍Kivach Waterfall.
Located within a nature reserve, entry is paid. The reserve is situated 80 km from Petrozavodsk and 27 km from Kondopoga.
📍Girvas Volcano (photo 9).
One of the oldest on the planet, approximately three billion years old! The volcano was discovered accidentally in the 1960s during the construction of a dam for a hydroelectric power station.
📌 Fishing
Fishing is popular throughout Karelia. The most favored spots are Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga.
📌 Best time to visit Karelia — mid-July to mid-August. If the weather is warm, the lakes heat up enough for swimming. However, the weather can be unpredictable! Be sure to pack warm and waterproof clothing.
📌 What to try?
· Karelian kalitki — famous boat-shaped pies made of thin rye dough with various fillings.
· Kalakukko — a Karelian pie resembling a loaf of rye bread with a juicy filling of trout and pork fat.
· Skantsy — traditional festive (ritual) flatbreads fried in oil, filled with millet or rice porridge with honey or sugar.
· Sulchiny — rye pancakes stuffed with rice porridge, potatoes, salted fish, lingonberries, or cottage cheese.
· Maitokalakeitto — red fish stewed in milk with potatoes or mashed potatoes, served with lemon.
