One of the most famous attractions is the Citadel, located at the highest point of Gozo's capital Victoria, a place with a long history that evolved from the Neolithic Age to what it is today, and is the location of many movies such as Games of Thrones. You can come to this Gozo Island by boat from the capital Valletta, which I highly recommend! Next to the castle there is also a church (cathedula of the assumption of the madonna) to visit and the architecture is very unique! Wied il-Ghasri beach with unusual topography. The sea was rough, but it was impressive in its own way. 7. Mysterious Blue Hole. The sea was too rough, so I couldn't see the Blue Hole I wanted to see. Apparently there are a lot of windy days in Malta. 8. Beautiful fortress Citadel. The sunset from here was also wonderful. 9. Xlendi, a resort on the island of Gozo. It starts just outside of the quaint town of Zurrieq. It begins by hiking into and through Wied Babu (Gorge) and along the southern coast to the Blue Grotto (named because of the massive cathedral like caves and the seas color), then continue past Wied Zurrieq and along the jagged limestone cliffs to Torri tal Hamrija (an old lighthouse). The last section of the trail follows above and beside the sea until Ghar Lapsi and the large parking lot for the TarRita restaurant. Located in the heart of Independence Square, it has a charming atmosphere that blends traditional Maltese character with a cosy European café feel. The interior is full of character, with vintage touches, warm lighting and a relaxed ambience that makes it a great spot for coffee, lunch or an evening drink. The location is perfect after visiting the Citadel, allowing you to sit back and take in the atmosphere of old Gozo. The beer was excellent. The service was friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience feel authentic rather than just a tourist stop. A lovely place to experience the slower pace and charm of Gozo. Clotheslines stretched from one end to the other, draped with faded sheets and striped shirts, flapping like signal flags when the wind picked up. 🍃 At noon, I turned into a high-walled garden—not the last one, but the Upper Barrakka Gardens on the other side. The cast-iron benches were scorching hot. I sat down to gaze at the silhouette of the Three Cities across the water. A cargo ship slowly cut through the sea, its wake trailing like a white zipper. On the hour, a faint clanging of metal came from the roof of an ochre-yellow building, not loud, but enough to send all the seagulls fluttering into the air. You have to go to the Blue Grotto early. Squeezing half a lemon over them, they were so hot they made my teeth ache, but I couldn't bear to spit them out. 🍋 There was also a honey sticky cake, served on a palm leaf. One bite pulled out threads, and it paired perfectly with a cool mint tea to cut through the richness. On Sundays, the fishing village pier had boats with eyes painted on their bows, red and blue clustered together. The boat captain squatted on the cabin roof, peeling shrimp shells and casually tossing them into the sea, attracting a swarm of small fish to snatch them up. Three days without a schedule. Waking up in the morning, I'd walk east, stumble upon a market, buy two oranges to tuck into my pocket, and peel them as I walked. In the afternoon, I'd take a bus south, watching an old woman with a shopping basket chat idly with the driver while waiting for the bus—I couldn't understand a word, but her tone was pleasant. In the evening, I'd hop on any ferry, going to any island. On day two, book an electric taxi (download Bolt—it’s much faster than the bus) to the Blue Grotto, then head to Dingli Cliffs to zone out, and finally explore Mdina’s stone alleys while waiting for the moon. The rocky beaches are rough on bare feet, so buy a pair of water shoes for a few dozen bucks in advance. The outlets are British three-prong, so if you forget an adapter, you won’t be able to charge your devices. The speedboat to Comino can be rough on the stomach, so bring motion sickness patches. Ferry tickets for the return trip are bought on board and cost just over 4 euros. Don’t rush or check off sights like a list. This little city is best enjoyed with your navigation off. Some of my other favourite experiences were visiting Ta’ Pinu Basilica in the evening, Wied il-Għasri, Dwejra Bay, and the historic Salt Pans. If you visit Comino, make sure to spend some time at the Blue Lagoon. The water is an unbelievable shade of turquoise, and I’d highly recommend taking a dip. If you can, catch one of the last boats back—most of the crowds will have left by then, and watching the sunset over the lagoon is pure magic. I visited at the end of January and beginning of February, and honestly, I think it’s one of the best times to experience Gozo. The island is beautifully green after the winter rains, hotel prices are much lower, and many of the island’s most beautiful places can be enjoyed without the crowds. While some water activities weren’t operating, I found the peace and quiet to be well worth the trade-off. Gozo is one of those places where life slows down. No rush, no noise—just beautiful landscapes, welcoming people, and the feeling that, for a little while, everything becomes wonderfully calm.
