Guazhou travel guide and discussion

There is always a city that can heal all the worldly dust, and Dunhuang is just that. Half is the vast expanse of desert and Gobi, half is the brilliant and gentle Silk Road civilization. After traveling thousands of miles, the most unforgettable are the Dunhuang winds, the thousand-year-old caves, the singing sand dunes at sunset, and the solitary desert smoke under the starry sky. Here is a carefully compiled 3 days 2 nights Dunhuang travel journal that avoids rushing and pitfalls, maximizing photo opportunities. It balances cultural depth and natural beauty, perfect for beginners to follow and unlock the most comfortable northwest travel rhythm✨ Basic travel information ▪️Best time to visit: May–October, July–August offers the best scenery, with large temperature differences between day and night, so bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings ▪️Duration: 3 days 2 nights (covering all highlights without exhaustion or rushing) ▪️Transportation: Taxis are convenient in the city. For east and west line attractions, car rental or shared rides are recommended for ease and comfort ▪️Accommodation recommendation: Around Shazhou Night Market for convenient dining, lodging, and transportation, with a great nighttime atmosphere ▪️Essentials: High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, windproof scarf, comfortable sneakers, moisturizing skincare (desert is dry and windy) Day 1 city slow stroll|First encounter with Dunhuang, sunset at sand springs and lively night market Designed for a relaxed start, no rushing upon arrival, slowly blending into the desert atmosphere, ideal for first-time northwest visitors. ✅ Afternoon: Dunhuang Museum Highly recommend making this your first stop in Dunhuang! Free admission, no reservation needed, 1.5 hours to quickly grasp the millennium history of the Silk Road. The museum replicates classic Mogao Cave sites and displays numerous Silk Road artifacts, serving as a “pre-class” before visiting Mogao Caves. Seeing the artifacts first then the real caves helps truly understand the depth of murals and grottoes. Photos here have a strong ancient aesthetic. ✅ Evening: Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Spring Half of Dunhuang’s romance is hidden here! Avoid the midday heat; entering after 5 PM is just right with soft, gentle light. Barefoot on the fine, soft yellow sand feels soothing and healing. You can try the classic camel ride, strolling the desert accompanied by camel bells, creating an immersive atmosphere. Climb to the highest point of the dunes to overlook the stunning coexistence of sand and spring, waiting for the sunset to dye the entire Gobi red. As the sun sets, the sand glows golden and the spring water is crystal clear—every shot is wallpaper-worthy. After dark, away from crowds, look up to an unobstructed starry sky, dazzling and breathtaking—this is the ultimate desert romance🌌 ✅ Night: Shazhou Night Market food stroll After the dunes, head straight to the city night market to experience authentic Dunhuang local life! Must-try dishes include donkey meat yellow noodles, poplar tree stewed cakes, and grilled lamb, paired with a sweet and sour local apricot peel drink to refresh and soothe travel fatigue. The street also offers various northwest specialties and handicrafts. The evening breeze is pleasant, the atmosphere lively, giving a genuine feel of Dunhuang’s city life. Day 2 cultural immersion|Explore Mogao Caves, travel through a thousand years of the Silk Road This day focuses on Dunhuang’s core cultural attractions, immersing in the charm of Eastern art treasures with a relaxed pace. ✅ Morning: Mogao Caves (the highlight) A must-visit millennium appointment in Dunhuang! Be sure to book an A-class ticket in advance for the best value and experience. Start at the digital exhibition center to watch two themed films, gaining a 3D understanding of Mogao’s thousand-year history and carving stories, then take the shuttle to the actual caves. Follow a professional guide into the caves to closely admire vivid murals and sculptures—graceful flying apsaras, solemn Buddhas, murals with colors lasting a thousand years. Every detail reflects the Silk Road’s prosperity and vicissitudes. The nine-story red-walled ancient building is a perfect photo spot, rustic and atmospheric. If time allows, purchase access to special caves to discover more exclusive and exquisite art. ✅ Afternoon: Intangible cultural heritage mural experience After seeing the ancient murals, try your hand at copying intangible cultural heritage murals. Calmly sketch Silk Road patterns, feel the warmth of traditional craftsmanship, and immerse yourself in the artisans’ dedication and romance. It’s very healing and a unique travel memento. ✅ Night: “See Dunhuang Again” immersive performance (optional) A walking immersive show with no fixed seats. Follow the storyline through the thousand-year Silk Road, meet Dunhuang’s historical figures, and deeply feel the desert’s prosperity and solitude. The dialogue is touching, the visuals stunning, leaving you with a full understanding of the phrase “a glance of a thousand years.” Day 3 west line Gobi|Wild secret spots, encounter the ultimate vastness of the desert Unlock Dunhuang’s wild scenery, visit uninhabited Gobi and millennium ruins, experience the unique vastness and desolation of the northwest, healing all anxiety. ✅ Morning: West Thousand Buddha Caves + Dunhuang Ancient City The West Thousand Buddha Caves are quieter and more secluded than Mogao, with fewer visitors. The caves are simple and original, preserving the purest Silk Road style, perfect for those who prefer tranquility and natural landscapes. Then visit Dunhuang Ancient City, where ancient-style buildings are neatly arranged. Wearing Hanfu or ancient costumes for photos here is highly photogenic, instantly transporting you to an ancient western city. ✅ Noon: Sons of the Earth sculpture group A popular photo spot on the Gobi, giant child sculptures sleeping in the wilderness, lonely yet healing. The vast Gobi combined with this striking art installation creates a strong visual impact and is a must-photograph landmark on the west line. ✅ Afternoon: Yumen Pass + Yardang Devil City Step into the ancient poem’s “spring breeze does not pass Yumen Pass.” The millennium-old pass ruins stand in the vast Gobi, with broken walls bearing the marks of time, immersing you in the poem’s desolate grandeur. Head west to Yardang Devil City, where unique Yardang landforms vary in shape. When strong winds blow, the howling sound gives it the name “Devil City.” Waiting for the Gobi sunset is the highlight of the entire trip! The sun spreads over the boundless Gobi, the sky and earth turn orange-red, the wilderness stretches endlessly, and the gentle wind soothes and heals, washing away all worries with this vast desert. 📝 Blogger’s tested tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Book Mogao Cave tickets well in advance! Tickets are hard to get in peak season. A-class tickets include digital films and 8 regular caves, offering much better value than B-class tickets 2. Enter Singing Sand Dunes in the evening to avoid midday heat. Desert UV rays are very strong, so apply sunscreen throughout to avoid sunburn 3. West line attractions are far apart with long drives. Prepare drinking water and snacks in advance and wear comfortable shoes 4. The desert has extreme temperature differences between day and night. Even in summer, bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings to avoid catching a cold 5. Bargain as needed at Shazhou Night Market. Choose local old shops for snacks to avoid disappointment and enjoy authentic flavors 🌍 Final thoughts Some say Dunhuang is a dream that heals the heart. Here, after seeing desert sunsets, dazzling starry skies, thousand-year-old caves, and vast Gobi, you truly understand that the vast mountains and rivers make life worth living. The wind comes from the thousand-year Silk Road. I am in Dunhuang, fulfilling a promise that spans a millennium.

As the autumn breeze sweeps across the Gobi Desert, the poplar trees in Ejina are painted in dazzling gold, marking the most vibrant season along the Hexi Corridor. This 8-day, 7-night golden autumn itinerary connects the desert poplar forests, majestic grottoes, and the colorful Danxia landforms, blending natural wonders with millennia-old culture for a dual feast of photography and history. #ChinaTravel Nestled along the ancient Silk Road in northwestern China, Dunhuang is home to three distinct grotto sites that carry thousand years of Buddhist art and cultural fusion. Each spot offers a unique glimpse into the region’s layered history, making them unmissable stops for travelers exploring Gansu’s cultural heritage. Mogao Caves: The World’s Largest Buddhist Art Treasury Location and History Mogao Caves sits 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, carved into the eastern cliff of Mingsha Mountain. First constructed in 366 AD during the Sixteen Kingdoms period, construction continued across ten dynasties including Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang and Yuan, creating a millennium-old artistic sanctuary. Today, 735 caves remain intact, holding 45,000 square meters of murals and 2,415 painted clay sculptures, earning it recognition as a World Cultural Heritage site and the most famous of China’s four great grottoes. Visitor Experience Tips Mogao Caves operates a strict real-name reservation system. The most popular A-class ticket, which grants access to 8 caves, often sells out a month in advance during peak travel seasons, so book your ticket as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Start your visit at the digital exhibition center, where two introductory films (including a stunning immersive dome screening) help you understand the historical background before you enter the caves. Follow a licensed guide through the open caves, watch as their flashlight brings flying apsaras, elaborate sutra paintings and giant Buddha statues to life, and remember that photography is prohibited inside caves to protect the fragile artworks. After touring the caves, save time to visit the nearby exhibition center, which houses full-size replica caves and historical relics that help you organize what you have seen. West Thousand Buddha Caves: A Quiet Off-the-Beaten-Path Gem Location and Historical Character West Thousand Buddha Caves lies along the western route out of Dunhuang, about 30 kilometers from the city center. It is a sister site to Mogao Caves, built along the Danghe River valley between the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties. While smaller in scale than Mogao, it retains many original murals and sculptures that have not undergone heavy restoration, giving it a more untouched, authentic feel. The site has only 22 open caves, so crowds are far thinner than at Mogao, making it perfect for travelers who want a quiet, immersive grotto experience. Highlights of a Visit Many of the murals at West Thousand Buddha Caves depict daily life along the Silk Road and vivid secular scenes, offering a more intimate look at ancient local culture than the grand religious tableaux of Mogao. The flowing lines and soft colors of the Tang dynasty murals here are particularly well preserved, and the delicate carved Buddha niches show the skill of ancient artisans. It is usually added as a stop on a western Dunhuang day tour that also includes Yumen Pass and Yadan National Geological Park, so you can combine cultural exploration with natural desert scenery. Yulin Grottoes: An Underrated Masterpiece of Grotto Art Location and Core Features Yulin Grottoes is located in Guazhou County, around 100 kilometers from downtown Dunhuang, carved into the cliffs along the Yulin River valley. Named for the dense elm forests that once lined the river, it was built around the same era as Mogao Caves and shares the same artistic lineage, often called the “sister grotto” of Mogao. It has 43 existing caves with over 5,000 square meters of murals and more than 270 painted sculptures. What makes Yulin unique is its well-preserved Western Xia and Yuan dynasty art, with bold, vivid colors and innovative compositions that differ from the more famous Tang works at Mogao. Visitor Tips Because Yulin Grottoes is farther from Dunhuang, it draws far fewer tourists, so you can take more time to appreciate the details of the art without rushing. The murals here include rare depictions of Buddhist stories with dramatic storytelling, and the painted sculptures retain much of their original pigment. Many travelers add Yulin Grottoes to a day trip that also includes the nearby locked Yang City ruins and the giant “Child of the Earth” sculpture, creating a full day of cultural and artistic exploration.

#ChinaTravel N The Way to Yulin Grottoes Yulin Grottoes, a hidden gem of Buddhist art located in Guazhou County, Jiuquan, Gansu Province, is most easily reached from nearby major tourist hubs. Most travelers start their trip from Dunhuang, which sits around 100 kilometers west of the grottoes. You can book a direct tourist shuttle from Dunhuang urban area that takes roughly two hours to reach the scenic entrance, or rent a private car for a more flexible schedule, which cuts travel time to about an hour and a half. If you come from Jiuquan city, you can first take a two hour intercity bus to Guazhou County, then transfer to a local taxi for a one hour drive south to the grottoes. No public bus runs directly to the scenic spot, so booking your return transport in advance is strongly recommended, as ride hailing is rarely available near the site. On-Site Navigation and Key Caves to Visit The Yulin Grottoes site is built along the narrow Yulin River valley, with caves distributed on both the eastern and western cliffs. After entering the scenic area, you will follow a set walking path that leads to the main opening caves, and all visits must be guided by a professional site staff member to protect the fragile murals. Ten caves are open to regular visitors, with the most notable cave numbers as follows. Cave 25 built during the Tang dynasty is the top highlight, it holds a famous mural of the reclining Buddha that features soft lines and vivid expressions that still retain bright original pigments. Cave 3 from the Western Xia dynasty is known for its unique combination of Han and Tibetan Buddhist art, with a large mural of the Thousand Hand Guanyin that shows exceptional detail. Cave 29 from the Five Dynasties period holds clear murals that depict daily life on the ancient silk road, including scenes of caravan travel and market trade. Cave 10 from the Song dynasty features delicate landscape murals that show a rare naturalistic style unique to the region. Other open caves including cave 4, cave 15, cave 17, cave 21, cave 22, and cave 33 hold different styles of art from different dynasties, and your guide will explain the history and artistic features of each cave along the route. Photography is strictly forbidden inside all caves to protect the ancient art works, so you can focus on enjoying the details in person. After visiting the open caves, you can walk along the Yulin River path to enjoy the view of the valley before exiting the site.

#ChinaTravel How to Get to Suoyang City Suoyang City, an ancient Silk Road ruin located in Guazhou County, Jiuquan, Gansu Province, is accessible through a combination of long-distance transport and local transfers. Most visitors start their journey from Jiuquan City or Dunhuang, two major tourist hubs in western Gansu. From Jiuquan, you can take a two-hour intercity bus to Guazhou County, then hire a local taxi for a 40-minute ride to the scenic area, which covers more than 100 square kilometers of desert and ancient ruins. If you depart from Dunhuang, the drive takes roughly three hours along the G30 Lianhuo Expressway, making it a convenient day trip for travelers staying in Dunhuang. For independent travelers, joining a group tour from Dunhuang or Jiuquan is also a popular option, as it includes round-trip transport and a professional guide to explain the site's history. There is no public bus directly to the scenic spot, so planning your transfer in advance is essential to avoid delays. Top Things to Do at Suoyang City Once you arrive at Suoyang City, the first stop is the ancient city wall, which remains surprisingly intact after more than a thousand years. Walking along the 10-meter-high rammed earth wall allows you to imagine the busy trade and military life that once filled this fortress during the Tang and Han dynasties. Next, visit the large underground granaries, where archaeologists found thousands of kilograms of well-preserved ancient grains that offer unique insight into how the city supported its population in the arid desert environment. Another unmissable experience is visiting the adjacent Buddhist cave temples, known as the Yulin Grottoes branch site. These caves feature intricate murals from the Tang dynasty that depict Buddhist stories and daily life on the Silk Road, with many colors still bright after centuries. For outdoor lovers, a hike through the surrounding desert landscape offers views of the ancient irrigation system that once turned this arid land into productive farmland, and you can spot unique desert plants and wild Bactrian camels along the way. End your visit with a sunset over the ruins, when the golden light turns the rammed earth walls warm orange and creates a magical, timeless atmosphere that connects you directly to the history of the Silk Road. Suoyang City is far more than a set of ancient ruins, it is a well-preserved window into the history of the Silk Road as well, that offers a quieter, more immersive experience than more crowded tourist sites in the region.

Everyone must take a trip on the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop at least once. I just got back and want to share my real feelings. May is still the off-season in Qinghai and Gansu, so it's cheaper and less crowded. The grass hasn't turned green yet, but you can still see snow. 【Itinerary Planning】 Here’s our itinerary, a total of eight days and seven nights including travel: D1 Fuzhou - Xi’an - Xining D2 Riyue Mountain - Qinghai Lake - Chaka Salt Lake - Stay in Delingha D3 Keluke Town - Chaerhan Salt Lake - Stay in Dachaidan D4 Dachaidan - Emerald Lake - Heidushan - Stay in Dunhuang D5 Dunhuang Mogao Caves - Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring - Silk Road Heritage City - Stay in Dunhuang D6 Son of the Earth - Zhangye Danxia Landform - Stay in Zhangye D7 Gangshika Snow Peak - Xining - Stay in Xining D8 Xining - Fuzhou 【Recommended Check-in Spots】 1️⃣ Riyue Mountain: Said to be Princess Wencheng’s first stop entering Tibet. The prayer flags are huge and the wind is strong. Take some photos but no need to stay long. 2️⃣ Qinghai Lake: The Erlangjian ticket is very expensive, optional to visit. You can just take some photos from a distance. 3️⃣ Chaka Salt Lake: In April, the water might not be fully open yet, so it’s a bit quiet. Be sure to wear a bright-colored dress, take the small train deep inside, don’t just stay at the crowded entrance. 4️⃣ Keluke Town: Filming location of "The Tree of Life," with the Baiju family house and hospital, definitely worth a visit. 5️⃣ Chaerhan Salt Lake: This is the real “emerald,” much larger than Chaka. The industrial style combined with the turquoise water is stunning. You must take the small train inside, or your legs will give out. 6️⃣ Dachaidan Emerald Lake: The essence of Dachaidan, not pure white but Tiffany blue and emerald green. Aerial shots are amazing. 7️⃣ Heidushan: Looks exactly like the moon’s surface, covered with black gravel. Wearing a black windbreaker for photos adds a high-end feel. 8️⃣ Mogao Caves: Must book in advance. No photos allowed inside. You can see 8 caves and two films, totally worth the ticket price. 9️⃣ Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring: Enter after 5 PM, or the sand will be too hot for your feet. Climb Mingsha Mountain for a panoramic view of Crescent Spring. Watching the sunset on the dunes is the most romantic moment in Dunhuang. 1️⃣0️⃣ Silk Road Heritage City: Not far from downtown, with a miniature Sphinx. Great for those who love exotic photo shoots. The night view is also nice. 1️⃣1️⃣ Son of the Earth: A giant reclining baby sculpture by the roadside in Guazhou, quite impressive. Good for a 20-minute photo stop. 1️⃣2️⃣ Zhangye Danxia Landform: Remember to bring an English book and wait for sunset! Viewing platform 4 is the best spot for sunset. The sunlight on the mountains looks like a spilled palette of colors. 1️⃣3️⃣ Gangshika Snow Peak: It can still snow in April. The heart-shaped lake is beautiful. 【Notes】 1️⃣ The northwest has a big temperature difference between day and night. In April, bring a thick coat and a windbreaker is essential; 2️⃣ The plateau is dry, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and moisturizing skincare are all must-haves. The highest altitude on the route is over 4000 meters, watch out for altitude sickness, and try not to shower on the first day. 3️⃣ Long bus rides are common, prepare snacks, power banks, and motion sickness medicine in advance; 4️⃣ Be sure to book Mogao Caves tickets in advance, wear shoe covers at the salt lakes, and visit Mingsha Mountain in the evening for more comfort; 5️⃣ Northwest cuisine tends to be salty and spicy. If you prefer mild flavors, inform the restaurant in advance.
