Hailar serves as both the starting and ending point of our eight-day tour of the Hulunbuir Grasslands, as we need to rent and return our car here. We allocated a day at the beginning and end of the trip to explore the city. However, if you're short on time, half a day should suffice to see the main attractions. Attractions: ① Hexi Morning Market: A bustling market where locals shop for daily necessities. It's quite large and even more enjoyable than the Xiaoheyan Morning Market in Shenyang! The Hailar-Yakeshi-Genhe small loop line has no crowds here, only quiet hills, forests, rivers and grasslands~ Let's see how to play 🌲Coniferous forests on both sides of the county road Daxing'anling has the only cold temperate coniferous forest area in China, where a unique tree species - Xing'an pine is distributed. On both sides of County Road 302, along Yakeshi all the way north, the roadside is full of colorful forests, which is beautiful. 🚂Slow train through the forest County Road 302 goes north along an old railway called Yalin Railway. My visit to Hailar City was a very disappointing experience. Compared with other places I have traveled to, I found this city lacking in attractions and activities for visitors. The prices were much higher than I expected, and I felt that the overall value for tourists was not good. Unfortunately, some interactions I had with local people left me with a negative impression, as I experienced situations where I felt I was treated unfairly or not honestly. This made my trip more stressful and uncomfortable. I came here with my family and children, hoping to have a memorable journey, but the experience did not meet our expectations. The air conditioning inside is so cold I wore a light jacket. Exhibits range from bronze artifacts to modern architectural models, a tour that’s like seeing half of Chinese history. 🍜 Afterward, head straight to Yuyuan Garden but don’t eat inside—Nanxiang Steamed Bun Shop has lines that never end. Instead, turn into Fangbang Middle Road nearby and pick any old noodle shop. Scallion oil noodles with a bowl of mung bean soup cost just 28 yuan. ⏰ At 4 PM, visit Guangfulin Cultural Site. The underwater museum exhibition hall is especially cool, and the sunset turns the red walls a warm orange, with beautiful reflections on the water. 🚄 The subway connects all these spots. The smoothest route is Line 2 to Line 9. Avoid taking unlicensed taxis. 3️⃣ Longnan | Gansu August in Longnan feels like time has been paused and slowed down. 📍 The water at Tianchi in Wen County is unreal blue, like an upside-down emerald. When the wind blows, ripples shimmer like silver. ⚠️ Note that some parts of the boardwalk by Tianchi have no shade. It’s best to arrive before 10 AM when the light is soft and the water color is clearest. 🍜 Guange Gou is another surprise—take the sightseeing bus from the entrance, and waterfalls appear one after another along the way. The mist cools your face. 📍 At the far end is a fork called “Eman Gou,” so quiet you can hear your heartbeat. Moss-covered stones are dotted with wildflowers. ⏰ Bring a pair of water shoes; you can step into many shallow streams. 🚄 It’s about a 1-hour taxi ride from Longnan city to Tianchi. Round-trip private car rental costs about 300 yuan. Avoid hailing unlicensed taxis on the roadside. 4️⃣ Guyuan | Ningxia Guyuan is one of those places where you expect heat but end up needing a jacket. 📍 Xumishan Grottoes are hidden in the loess cliffs. At noon in August, the grottoes are cool, like a natural air-conditioned room. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain is a lamb offal shop called “Lao Sanying.” The lamb soup is crystal clear, sprinkled with cilantro and garlic sprouts, warming your stomach. ⏰ If you’re traveling with kids, visit the grottoes in the morning, then head to Huoshizhai in the afternoon when the sunlight is slanting. The Danxia landform glows red like fiery clouds, but the mountain wind is strong, so bring a windbreaker. ⚠️ Drinks inside the grotto area cost twice as much as at the foot of the mountain. It’s best to bring your own water. 📍 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Guyuan city to Xumishan, costing around 50 yuan. 5️⃣ Hulunbuir | Inner Mongolia In August, Hulunbuir’s grasslands are so green they look oily, but the temperature is low enough to wear a light down jacket. 📍 Stay overnight in a Mongolian yurt at a herder’s place on the Hulunbuir grassland. At 5 PM, the grassland turns golden green, and the air smells like a mix of grass and cow dung—a surprisingly pleasant scent. 🍜 The local herders’ hand-pulled meat, served with wild chive flower sauce, is so tender it can be shredded by hand. You’ll be full after the second serving. ⏰ To see the morning mist, get up at 6 AM and open the door. The grassland will be covered in white fog, with horses faintly visible like an ink painting. 🚄 It’s about a 1-hour private car ride from Hailar city to the pasture. Book in advance as cars are scarce during peak season. ⚠️ Mosquitoes on the grassland are numerous and aggressive. Bring mosquito repellent or your legs will be covered in red bumps. 6️⃣ Laibin | Guangxi Laibin is one of those hidden summer escapes that everyone knows Guilin but few remember. 📍 At Jin Xiu Lotus Mountain, you’re surrounded by countless waterfalls as soon as you get off the bus. The roar of water is deafening, and the humidity is so high your skin feels sticky. 🍜 At the food stalls at the foot of the mountain, sour bamboo shoots with snails and beer fish, paired with a bowl of chilled corn sweet soup, cost only 10 yuan. ⏰ It’s best to enter the mountain after lunch because the paths are steep. After 3 PM, sunlight filters through the trees, perfect for photos. ⚠️ Ladies, don’t wear high heels. The steps are covered in moss and very slippery. 📍 There’s a tourist shuttle from Laibin city to Jin Xiu Lotus Mountain every 2 hours. You can also take a taxi for about 200 yuan round-trip. 7️⃣ Huangshan | Anhui The August sunset at Huangshan glows red like burning embers, but the mountain is cool enough for a light down jacket. 📍 I chose Hongcun in the ancient villages of southern Anhui because the old Huizhou-style buildings by the Moon Pond reflect in the water. From afternoon to evening, the changing light and shadows can be enjoyed all day. 🍜 The stinky mandarin fish at “Jushantang” in the village smells strong but tastes tender. Paired with preserved vegetable flatbread, it’s amazing. ⏰ If you only have one day, climb Huangshan in the morning to see the strange pines and rocks, then visit Chengkan ancient village in the Huizhou cultural tourism area in the afternoon. Chengkan has half the visitors of Hongcun, with narrow alleys only wide enough for one person and walls covered in trumpet vines. ⚠️ Prices at the top of Huangshan are three times higher. Bring your own self-heating rice and water to save money. 📍 Take the tourist shuttle from Huangshan North Station to Hongcun. The trip takes 1 hour and costs 30 yuan. 8️⃣ Haidong | Qinghai Summer in Haidong feels like God turned down the temperature. The sun shines brightly but it feels like 20 degrees. 📍 At the Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Park, Tu women wear rainbow-striped clothes and dance the wheel autumn dance in the courtyard, their skirts swirling like flowers. 🍜 The distilled liquor in the park tastes sweet but has a strong aftereffect. Don’t overdrink. 📍 Youning Temple is hidden in a deep mountain valley. It’s a 40-minute private car ride from the homeland park. The prayer wheels outside are scorching from the sun, but inside the temple is cool enough to shiver. ⏰ Visit the temple at 8 AM to hear the monks’ morning chanting echoing through the valley, very calming. ⚠️ Be sure to apply sunscreen in Haidong. The UV rays are as strong as on the plateau, but the air is dry, so bring lip balm. 🚄 The high-speed train from Xining to Haidong takes 15 minutes and costs 18 yuan. Don’t waste time on the bus. August in China is uniformly hot, but each cool spot has its own unique chill. Wildflowers cover the hills and the winding river flows through. For a short summer getaway, this place is unbeatable🌿 📍Quick basic info · Location: Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia, with Hailar as the transit hub. Direct flights or transfers via Harbin are both convenient. The 4-day classic loop averages less than 2.5 hours of driving per day, suitable for families, couples, and friends. · Local climate: Daytime temperatures in July and August range from 20–28℃. The breeze cools the grasslands, making it feel fresh and never stuffy. Nighttime temps drop to 10–18℃, with a day-night temperature difference over 10℃. It’s peak wildflower season, with large patches of globeflowers blooming. The grassland UV rays are very strong, so high-SPF sunscreen and windproof jackets are a must. Bring a raincoat instead of an umbrella (the wind is too strong to hold one). 🗓️4-day classic itinerary Day 1: First encounter with grassland wetlands Depart from Hailar straight to the Morigele River. Here’s the bottom line: Hulunbuir isn’t just a "scenic spot," it’s a way of life. You might think going to the grasslands is just about taking photos and checking in? No, no, no. During my six days here, I lived like a different person—riding horses through waist-high waves of grass by day, sitting on a hillside watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon at dusk, and lying under the skylight of a yurt at night counting stars until I fell asleep. When I got back, my coworkers asked, "Where did you go?" I couldn’t really say, only that it’s a place that makes you not want to leave. ✈️ How to get there + how to get around Flying direct to Hailar is the fastest way. There are flights from Beijing, Shanghai, and Harbin. Round-trip tickets in July with taxes included cost about 1,500–2,800 CNY. Once you arrive, don’t even think about renting a car and driving yourself!! I know many people think self-driving is more flexible, but the reality of the Hulunbuir border roads is— ❌ Large sections have no cell signal ❌ Navigation can lead you to dead ends ❌ After heavy rain, dirt roads turn into mud pits ❌ Driving 4–6 hours a day makes it impossible to enjoy The right way is to book a car with a driver upon arrival. A 5-seat SUV costs 600–800 CNY per day in peak season. Find a local driver who knows which roads have the best light at what time, the best hill to watch the sunset from, and which detours avoid traffic jams. My driver even helped us avoid a route recommended by navigation that was actually closed for repairs, saving us at least 2 hours. 🔥 Things to do | Not just sightseeing, but fully immersing yourself ▫️ Zone out on the cliff of the Morigele River This is a 5A scenic area. Tickets will be free starting in 2026. Sightseeing buses cost 35 CNY. But! You must book 3–7 days in advance! Popular summer slots sell out instantly. I was among the first in at 9 AM, and there were only a few of us on the entire viewing platform. The river below winds through nine bends, and the sunlight on the water looks like scattered gold. The wind on the cliff is especially strong, blowing my hair everywhere, but that feeling of standing between earth and sky, surrounded by green in every direction, is unforgettable. ▫️ Ride horses across the grasslands to Sunset Hill The horseback riding experience at Heishantou was the highlight of my trip. It’s not the kind where you’re led around a few laps in a tourist area. You really ride your own horse across rolling grasslands, ending at the hilltop to watch the sunset. It costs about 200 CNY per person, with a horse master accompanying you the whole way. The rhythm of bouncing on the horse and the wind across the grassland blend together, leaving only one feeling in your mind: cool. ⚠️ Beginners should choose a shorter horse, wear long pants and sneakers, and avoid skirts. ▫️ Slide down from the top of the 186 Color Ribbon River Tickets cost 35 CNY. A combo ticket for grass sledding plus sightseeing bus is 100 CNY. You can also buy an all-inclusive ticket (horseback riding + grass sledding + bumper cars) for about 200 CNY. The grass sledding track is a kilometer long. Sitting on the sled, you rush down from the top, with the Color Ribbon River’s winding wetlands on both sides. The wind fills your ears, and your screams trail behind you. After sledding, you can visit the viewing platform, which offers a direct view of a Russian town across the river. Through the binoculars, you can even see the flowers in their yards. ▫️ Spend a day on the G331 border road This is the most beautiful road I’ve ever traveled, bar none. On the left is endless grassland, on the right is the Erguna River, and across the river is Russia. The stretch from checkpoint 5 to 7 is the highlight. The scenery outside the car window changes every second—meadows, river bends, birch forests, distant villages… ⚠️ This section has gravel roads, so be cautious after rain. Drones are strictly prohibited along the entire route due to border control. Cell signal is almost nonexistent, so download offline maps in advance. 🌙 Where to rest | The soul of the grasslands is at night No matter how wild your days are, if your place to stay at night is disappointing, the whole trip loses points. The starry sky yurts deep in the grasslands are the most healing places I’ve stayed—open the door to endless green, close it and look through the skylight to see a sky full of stars. In peak season (July–August), starry sky yurts with private bathrooms, air conditioning, and hot water cost 600–800 CNY per night per person. Sounds expensive? But keep in mind there are fewer than 5,000 beds in all the unique accommodations across the grassland scenic areas, and July rooms are basically sold out by early June. I’ve also seen budget yurts (200–400 CNY per night) with shared bathrooms, no hot water, and almost no soundproofing. You’ll rely on them when there’s no signal ⑥ Book Morigele River 3–7 days ahead. Don’t take chances One last thing: if you can only visit one place this year, go to the grasslands. It won’t just make you say "wow, so beautiful, snap a photo and leave." It will make you want to nestle in, settle down, and never leave.

Who says you have to stay in an air-conditioned room in August and September? These places are either seriously underrated or at their best season—ranging from 2 to 10 hours by high-speed train, from riverside ancient battlefields to galloping grasslands, from karst landscapes to thousand-year-old stone caves. The less popular spots won’t disappoint, and the popular ones are peaceful if you pick the right time. I’ve done the hard work for you, now just go. 01 Xianning | Hubei Turn into the ancient battlefield of Chibi, where the river breeze carries the salty scent of history. ⏰ After 4 PM, the sunlight slants across the statue of Zhou Yu, casting a shadow perfectly on the characters for “Chibi,” so you can take silhouette photos without waiting. 📍 The boardwalk by the cliff inscriptions lets you hear the river splashing quietly, half as noisy as the main road. 🍜 At the old street near the exit, there’s a shop called “Ancient Battlefield Fish Balls.” The fish balls are springy, and the broth is made from river fish. It’s 15 yuan a bowl. Don’t eat at the fried skewer stall by the entrance. ⚠️ Don’t buy the “Three Kingdoms commemorative coins” sold inside the scenic area. The same ones at nearby shops are three times cheaper. The whole Chibi area is small and can be explored in two hours, perfect for a quick stop before heading to Wuhan. 02 Xinzhou | Shanxi Yanmen Pass, Laoniuwan, and Wutai Mountain are all in the same city but offer completely different experiences. If you only have one day, head straight to Yanmen Pass—⏰ arrive before 9 AM to find almost no one on the Great Wall and hear the wind whistling through the battlements. 📍 On the north side of the gate tower, there’s a wild Great Wall staircase that few tourists know about. Climb it to overlook the entire canyon. 🍜 After descending, have a bowl of “Daixian stewed fish” in Daixian county town. The fish is tender and pairs well with yellow wine to cut the richness. ⚠️ Wutai Mountain gets traffic jams down to the foot of the mountain during peak season. For peace and quiet, visit on a weekday or stay inside Taihuai Town. Laoniuwan is great for drones; otherwise, you’ll only see a corner of the river bend, but the Yellow River sunset is truly stunning. 🚄 It takes about 1.5 hours by taxi from Xinzhou West Station to Wutai Mountain. Shared rides cost half as much as private taxis. 03 Changzhou | Jiangsu A day full of variety: ride into Tianmu Lake at 9 AM when the mist still lingers on the water. Walk the lakeside trail where dew clings to bamboo leaves. 📍 Moss grows on the steps of Bao’en Zen Temple on the west shore. The temple bell can be heard across the lake. ⏰ Arrive at the Spring and Autumn Yancheng Tourist Area before noon. The water system of three cities and three rivers is unique. Rent an electric cart to circle the perimeter. Don’t enter the paid “Spring and Autumn Culture Museum” because the interactive exhibits are broken. At 3 PM, head to Global Dinosaur City—⚠️ don’t wait in line for the “Jurassic Adventure” ride. The two-hour wait is only for five minutes of fun. It’s better to spend 20 yuan on the Ferris wheel for a panoramic view. 🍜 At night, eat Changzhou rice cakes at the “Old West Gate” district next to Dinosaur City. The salty lard flavor is authentic and pairs well with a cup of herbal tea. 🚄 It’s a 50-minute taxi ride from Changzhou Station to Tianmu Lake. The subway goes directly to Dinosaur City. 04 Hulunbuir | Inner Mongolia In August and September, the grasslands are still green, but mornings and evenings are cool enough for jackets. 📍 From the Jinzhanghan tribe to the Morigele River, avoid the tourist bus road. Take the herders’ dirt path to see sheep crossing the river. ⏰ After 4 PM, the light is softest. Shoot horses against the light to capture their golden manes. 🍜 The Russian-style stewed beef at “Lubuli Western Restaurant” in Hailar city is good, but don’t order the borscht—it’s overly sweet. ⚠️ Don’t rent horses at the scenic entrance. They charge 200 yuan per hour but only let you circle around. Instead, find a Mongolian yurt guesthouse owner to lead a horse for 50 yuan for half an hour of riding. Also, the grassland mosquitoes are fierce, so bring long sleeves and insect repellent. 05 Chongzuo | Guangxi The shock of Detian Transnational Waterfall beats Huangguoshu—just don’t go at noon! ⏰ Arrive before 9 AM. The sunlight hits the waterfall from the east, creating rainbows in the mist, and the viewing platform is almost empty. 📍 Downstream, “Sino-Vietnamese Style Street” sells Vietnamese slippers and coconut candy, good as souvenirs. Don’t trust the “Vietnamese coffee” there; many are local Guangxi instant packets. The Zuojiang Huashan rock paintings require a boat ride. ⚠️ The ticket includes a guided tour, but afternoon boats are less frequent, so check the schedule in advance. The bamboo raft drift at Mingshi Pastoral is the most relaxing, with mountain reflections on both sides—perfect for zoning out. 🍜 At the scenic entrance, “Mingshi Farm” serves sour bamboo shoot fish head hot pot. It’s sour and spicy, great with sticky rice—you can eat two bowls. 🚄 There’s a tourist shuttle from Chongzuo South Station to Detian every two hours. 06 Changsha | Hunan If you’re traveling with family, take the cable car up and slide down at Yuelu Mountain. Kids will have a blast, but ⚠️ the slide closes at 5:30 PM, so don’t wait until the last minute. ⏰ Reach the summit before 6 PM to watch the Xiang River sunset and see the lights come on at Orange Isle. If you’re solo, visit the provincial museum to see the real Lady Xin Zhui’s mummy from the Mawangdui Han tomb. No photos and keep quiet. 📍 Tianxin Pavilion’s city wall is free after 4 PM. From there, you can see the old street layout of Changsha. Huaminglou is in the suburbs and takes half a day. Unless you’re really into biographies, it’s better to stay in the city to eat and drink. 🍜 The stinky tofu at Huogongdian on Pozi Street is not good. 👀 Look for black tofu sold from street carts. It’s crispy fried and topped with spicy sauce, only 5 yuan a serving. ⚠️ The popular “Wenheyou” at Hisense Plaza has a three-hour wait. It’s better to go to the Hualongchi location, which is half as crowded. 07 Tongren | Guizhou The red clouds and golden peak of Fanjing Mountain are less crowded if you go at the end of August. ⏰ Enter the scenic area when it opens at 7:30 AM. Take the cable car up, then climb 800 steps to the summit. You can have the viewing platform to yourself before 9 AM. ⚠️ Don’t wear flip-flops or high heels. Some stone steps are nearly 70 degrees steep.
