You don’t need to drive to explore some of the Lake District’s most beautiful lakes. 🚆🚌 Here are 5 of my favourites and how to reach them by public transport. 1️⃣ Windermere 🌊 🚆 Windermere Station From the station, take the 599 to Bowness, or walk around 30 minutes to the lake. Windermere is the easiest lake to reach by train. 2️⃣ Derwentwater 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station Take the X4/X5 bus to Keswick, then walk down to the lake. You can also take the Keswick Launch to explore different parts of Derwentwater. 3️⃣ Ullswater 🌿 🚆 Penrith Station From Penrith, take the 508 towards Glenridding/Patterdale, or the 509 from Keswick. In summer, the UB1/UB2 Ullswater Bus connects the main villages and attractions. 4️⃣ Coniston Water 🚤 🚆 Windermere Station Take the 505 through Ambleside and Hawkshead to Coniston. You can then explore the lake by foot or take the Coniston Launch. 5️⃣ Buttermere 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station → Keswick Take the X4/X5 to Keswick, then connect towards Buttermere. In summer 2026, the 77/77A connects Keswick and Buttermere, while the 77C shuttle runs between Cockermouth and Buttermere on selected days. 💡 Good to know: the Lake District is surprisingly easy to explore without a car, but check timetables before travelling because some routes are seasonal. When I finally decided to leave, I grabbed my bag, paid for my books, and rushed out, completely forgetting my umbrella. About ten minutes later, halfway to the bus stop, I realized my mistake. Assuming it was long gone, I sighed and prepared to get soaked. To my surprise, an elderly gentleman, the shop owner, came jogging after me through the rain. "You nearly flew away without this!" he laughed, holding out my soggy but recovered umbrella. He didn't have to run after me; the shop was busy, and I hadn't even noticed it was missing. He simply said, "Can't have you missing the views because of a bit of English rain." This encounter stuck with me more than the exhibits. My tip for fellow travelers: the buses between Hawkshead and Windermere can be infrequent, especially in the off-season, so check the timetable. Hawkshead is an ancient township that had flourished since norse times. This tiny village is still in the same collection of white paint houses. The 17th century church of St Michael stands high looking over the village and has a fine view to Esthwaite water which is 2 kilometers 25 minutes away. The old grammar school was found in 1585 by the Archbishop of York. The ground floor classroom retains many old desks including the poet Willam Wordsworth. No cars are allowed inside, outside got a big paid carpark, or you can take 505 buses either from Kendal or Ambleside.
