Ten Days in Guangxi | A Journey Without a Theme but Full of Surprises This trip to Guangxi was not planned around a specific theme, but simply to explore along the way and experience the unique scenery and rich culture of southwest China. The ten-day itinerary covers Guangxi and surrounding areas, featuring both magnificent natural landscapes and abundant historical sites. Notably, many ancient villages and historic districts are facing degradation, making the cultural heritage felt during the journey both urgent and precious. Highlights include the rustic solemnity of Fengxue Temple and its pagoda forest, the grandeur of the cliff carvings at Fubo Hill in Guilin, the historical weight of Ho Chi Minh’s former residence in Liuzhou, and the archaeological charm of the Hepu Han Tombs. The ancient architectural complex at Feiyun Cliff in Guizhou and the Jin Gou Wind and Rain Bridge are also unforgettable. Each site and ancient building tells a sealed story that inspires deep respect. Huiai Bridge, also known as Jinsu Gate Bridge and commonly called the Old Bridge, was originally built during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty (1506–1520). It was destroyed by a major fire in the 13th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1887). In the first year of the Xuantong reign (1909), Li Jingye, then prefect of Lianzhou, donated a year’s salary and rallied local gentry to fund its reconstruction. The current bridge was completed in the third year of Xuantong (1911). Named for its benevolence to the people, it was listed as part of the seventh batch of Nationally Protected Cultural Relics in 2013. The ancient bridge is located over the Ximen River on Huiai Road in Lianzhou Town, Hepu County, Beihai City. One end of the bridge connects to the old town, the other to the market, giving it a lively, authentic atmosphere. The scenery is beautiful and the crowds are few, making it perfect for photos and check-ins‼️ 🌈 Highlights: ✅ Huiai Bridge is 38.66 meters long and 4.83 meters wide. The bridge deck and wooden components are made of Kundián wood, with a triangular truss roof covered with tiles. ✅ The bridge runs east-west and features a three-hinged arch truss structure. The arch feet rest on olive-shaped stone piers on both banks. Brick-built arched drainage holes are set beside the piers. The entire bridge is made of wood. ✅ At the time, Huiai Bridge was one of the most advanced wooden bridges, with a clever and scientific design. Dashi Pavilion, also known as Sipailou, was originally the Yong'an Drum Tower. It was named after the Guanyin Bodhisattva once enshrined in the pavilion. Built during the Ming Chenghua period, it is one of the ancient buildings closest to the sea in China, with a history of over 500 years. It has withstood multiple typhoons and earthquakes and remains standing, earning the title "Pearl of Ancient Architecture in the South China Sea." In 1988, it was listed as part of the third batch of "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units." 🌈 Highlights: ✅ The entire pavilion faces south and consists of two connected open double-eaved Xieshan-style pavilions, forming an integrated interior. It has three bays with a width of 9.7 meters and a total depth of six bays measuring 16.4 meters. The pavilion is constructed entirely from millennium-old ironwood, without bricks, stones, or iron nails. Among the 36 columns, one main column is suspended without touching the ground, showcasing a unique structure. ✅ Dashi Pavilion is divided into front and rear pavilions with two floors. The front and rear pavilions are connected without an open courtyard in between. The front pavilion is 6.38 meters high with a nine-purlin wooden frame without corridors; the rear pavilion is 7.43 meters high with an eleven-purlin wooden frame without corridors. The intersecting eaves are equipped with gutters, forming a hooked roof connection. ✅ The pavilion uses a large wooden frame combining southern architectural features of the Chuandou and Tailiang styles, centered around the four-column hall of the rear pavilion. About three kilometers south of Hepu County Town in Guangxi, there is a striking red and white ancient pagoda known as the Wenchang Pagoda. Built in the 11th year of the Wanli reign of the Qing Dynasty (1613), it has a history of over 400 years. Because it is located within the Wenchang Pagoda area of the Hepu Han Tombs, the Wenchang Pagoda area of the Hepu Han Tombs was included in the fourth batch of "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units" in 1996. 🌈 Highlights: ✅ The ancient pagoda is a seven-story octagonal pavilion-style brick tower, 35 meters high, with a diameter of over 8 meters on the first floor. The original pagoda tip was a dense-eave style finial, which was destroyed by lightning and later repaired with a gourd-shaped treasure top. Climbing the pagoda offers a panoramic view of Beihai. Destination: Hepu. Starting from Bobai, we chose two stops along the way—General Xiang Hanping's Former Residence and Qumu Hakka Earth Walled Village. The entire route avoids highways and covers over 120 kilometers, with sightseeing and activities taking about half a day. Xiang Hanping, like Yu Hanmou, was a famous general of the Guangdong Army (you can look it up). His former residence is also listed as a cultural protection unit, but unfortunately, it has been dilapidated for a long time without renovation or public access. Despite this regret, the scenery along the way was quite nice. We saw various tropical crops such as dragon fruit, sugarcane, bananas, papayas, and sisal, accompanied by fresh flowers from time to time—favorites for us northern tourists. Qumu Hakka Earth Walled Village is about ten kilometers from here, relatively well preserved, with a few families still living inside. It is free to visit and rarely crowded, so it’s worth a look if you’re passing by. Hepu belongs to Beihai City. Here you can find Huaiyuan Garden, Ancient Cape Scenic Area, Huiai Bridge, and Qilou Old Street. These four places are not far apart and are all located along the Ximen River from south to north, making them walkable. Huaiyuan Garden is a courtyard building combining Chinese and Western styles, built by a local wealthy merchant. It is a century-old cultural protection unit and open to the public for free. Inside, there are restaurants, tea houses, and antique shops operating, making it a great spot for taking photos with a Republic of China era vibe. The Ancient Cape Scenic Area has an entrance fee of about 15 yuan, with free admission for those over 60. Inside, there are the Cape Pavilion and Kuixing Pavilion. During the Song Dynasty, this area was coastal, hence the name Cape Pavilion. Due to changes over time, now only the Ximen River connects to the sea. The convenient sea transport via the Ximen River contributed to Hepu’s past prosperity, and the riverside Qilou Old Street remains as a relic of the once bustling merchant district. The shops and street vendors on the old street are all local daily life, with no tourism development, offering a truly authentic atmosphere full of local flavor. Huiai Bridge spans the Ximen River, connecting the east and west banks. It is now a cultural protection unit, occasionally visited by tourists for photos. Crossing the bridge leads to the Confucian Temple, and to the east is still the Qilou Old Street. Unfortunately, the Confucian Temple is dilapidated and not open to the public. The Hepu Han Dynasty Culture Museum is built around a Han tomb cluster, featuring exhibition halls with artifacts and several Han tomb displays.
