I spent three days in Laibin, and my spending habits collapsed July 28
July in Laibin really healed me with this slow-paced small town 🌿. A high-temperature blue alert was in effect. The daytime high reached 36℃, with a heat index up to 39℃. Showers could come at any time, so this is a practical guide I wrote after enduring the heat and mountain mist. Ladies, bookmark this before you go 📌.
📸 Here are the best photo spots first
The sea of clouds over Jinxiu Shengtang Mountain with alpine rhododendrons. Climb to the top just after 5 AM and your phone photos will look amazing 📷;
The Panwangjie cable car offers a bird’s-eye view of the stone forest. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the strange peaks and mist that look like stepping into Yao mythology;
The red walls and blue tiles of Xincheng Motu Si Yamen, known as the "Zhuang homeland palace." Wearing a new Chinese-style dress in the main hall makes for a great shot. Hanfu fans will be thrilled 👘;
Visit the Hongshui River Hundred-Mile Gallery at dusk. The sunset lights up the karst peaks, and you can stop by the bike path to take photos;
In front of the Jinxiu Yao village stilted houses, wear a white dress against the light. That photo can be your profile picture 🌅.
Heshan National Mining Park is an industrial-style park converted from an abandoned mine pit. The railroad tracks and red brick walls make for a unique, atmospheric spot popular with niche photographers.
🗺️ Best route to follow
Day 1 Take a high-speed train from Nanning or Liuzhou to Laibin North, then taxi to Jinxiu (about 2 hours). In the afternoon, head to Panwangjie Scenic Area. Cable car + elevator round trip costs 239 yuan. The whole route is step-free and friendly. You can catch the live show "Panwang Ode." Stay overnight in a Yao village stilted house 🌙.
Day 2 Get up early to see the sea of clouds at Shengtang Mountain (adult ticket 61 yuan, book on Trip.com 1 day in advance). Then head down to Baiya Grand Canyon to cool off. The Danxia landform and waterfall group are great for wading. In the evening, drive to Xiangzhou for a soak at the Ancient Elephant Hot Spring (55 yuan per person). Enjoy the starry sky pool at night ♨️.
Day 3 Have beef offal noodles in Xiangzhou Temple Village, then visit Xincheng Motu Si Yamen (last entry at 4:30 PM, don’t be late). Return to the city to stroll along the Hongshui River walkway before heading back. If you have more time, add Wuxuan Baiya Grand Canyon and Yunjiang Ancient Town. For cross-county travel, public transport is not recommended. For 2–3 people, a private car costs about 80 yuan per person. Local drivers know the mountain roads well and can act as part-time guides 🚗.
⚠️ Pitfall guide (learned the hard way)
Never climb Shengtang Mountain at noon in July. Halfway up, you’ll just want to lie down. It’s best to go before 7 AM or after 4 PM 🌡️.
Jinxiu’s mountain roads have 18 sharp turns. If you get car sick and don’t have medicine, it’s torture. A girl next to me got off the car looking pale.
Don’t wear flat shoes in Baiya Grand Canyon. The moisture will ruin your hairstyle instantly. Non-slip sandals are the right choice.
The "Yao specialty" snacks at the scenic area entrance are overpriced. A bowl of oil tea costs 25 yuan. If you want to eat local, go straight to the old neighborhoods in the city. The alleys behind Zhenghe Pedestrian Street are where locals hang out.
Weekend homestays in Jinxiu raise prices sharply. Book on Trip.com at least a week in advance. Don’t ask on the day of arrival. The rainy season has frequent showers. Check the weather before buying tickets for outdoor spots to avoid wasted trips 🌧️.
🍜 Food recommendations
Wuxuan red yeast sour fried large intestine is a must-try. The sourness from fermented red yeast rice has a wine aroma. The sour, spicy, and crispy dish goes well with rice—you can eat three bowls 🌶️;
Qidong steamed duck with rice powder is wrapped in handmade local rice noodles. The sweetness of the rice, richness of the duck, and fragrance of the bamboo leaves blend perfectly;
Xiangzhou Longtou pork belly is fatty but not greasy and melts in your mouth. Heshan taro duck feet are sour and fragrant, cutting through the richness with plenty of collagen;
Jinxiu Yao family’s fermented pork and bamboo shoot stuffing represent "Yao never without fermented pork." The oily, salty flavor and the sticky, crispy texture complement each other 🥢.
For breakfast, go to Zhongnan Road for Laibin rice noodles. The rice slurry is freshly filtered, and the coarse noodles are served in a savory minced meat soup, costing 6–9 yuan per bowl. Then try Laibin dumplings with translucent wrappers filled with wood ear mushrooms, shiitake, and lean pork. The yellow skin sauce is the soul of the dish 🥟.
Xiangzhou Temple Village’s beef offal is stewed until tender. Xincheng meat dumplings are sticky rice wrapped with mung beans, pork belly, and chestnuts. At 10 yuan each, they’re a great hunger buster. Don’t miss the locust flower sweet soup and Yao oil tea for dessert. The tea is made by pounding tea leaves, ginger, garlic, and sesame. The first sip is slightly bitter, the second is truly fragrant ☕.
For souvenirs, bring Wuxuan red yeast sour, Xiangzhou rice cakes, and Yao mountain dried bamboo shoots. Old street workshops are much cheaper than scenic area shops 🎁.
July in Laibin is really hot and humid, but also truly healing. Bring sunscreen, a light jacket, and non-slip shoes as your essentials. Leave the rest to the evening breeze by the Hongshui River and the cooking smoke in the Yao village 🌿✨.
