A Wonderful First Experience at Joy Island, Maldives
Our family visited the Maldives for the first time in July 2026 and stayed at Joy Island 5*, which is located on the North Male Atoll and was built on a man-made island in 2023. A hotel staff member greeted us at Male Airport, and after a 25-minute wait, we boarded a speedboat for a 45-minute ride to the hotel. Cool towels and water were provided on board. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our personal Island Host, Maria, who quickly arranged our check-in while we enjoyed a non-alcoholic cocktail. Maria gave us a tour of the small island in a buggy, ending at the water villas. The hotel surprised me with a gift for my upcoming birthday—one night in a water villa with a pool. The water villas feature sturdy wooden ladders to access the ocean and have both indoor bathrooms and pool access from the main room and shower. Since the island is artificial, there are no "dangerous" sea creatures here.
Sunrise at the hotel is around 6:30 AM local time, though this is actually an hour ahead of Male time (5:30 AM) due to the hotel's "artificial" time adjustment. The hotel operates on an all-inclusive basis, but not everything in the room is complimentary. Tea, coffee, bottled water, beer, red and white wine, soda, juices, and some mixers are included and restocked daily.
The next morning, we were moved to our originally booked land villa with a private pool (1.2 meters deep). It featured an outdoor shower and bathtub, and the spacious room included a wardrobe. Weather-wise, July isn't peak season, but during our 10-day stay, there was only one night and one day of rain. The showers were brief, lasting 5 minutes to an hour, and sunshine followed. Air temperatures hovered around 30°C, and ocean water was consistently 26-27°C. The pool was 26 to 30°C, depending on sunlight. The daylight hours were steady year-round, with sunrise at 7 AM and sunset at 7 PM.
The primary restaurant, The Market, is located near the main pool and reception area, offering breakfast (7:30 AM - 10:00 AM), lunch (12:30 PM - 2:30 PM), and dinner (7:30 PM - 9:30 PM). Though there’s no strict dress code for dinner, many tables are outdoors, while a small air-conditioned area is available, where we often dined. Guests can call for buggy service, especially convenient for water villa guests, as walking from the furthest villa to the island's center takes about 20 minutes. Food is freshly prepared at The Market, offering meat, fish, and seafood dishes. Since the hotel is part of an Italian chain, pasta is available daily and cooked to order with various sauces or just cheese. Desserts come in a cooled section, and fresh fruits like pineapple, watermelon, and papaya are readily available. The hostesses, especially Indah, were very helpful, guiding guests to assigned tables—the system ensures no one sits at your table by mistake. Drink service is swift, with beer, wine, juices, and sodas available at lunch and dinner. At breakfast, sodas like Sprite cost extra. Stronger drinks and cocktails can be picked up from the main bar and brought to the restaurant.
Complimentary water sports include kayaking and paddleboarding, along with snorkeling gear for the entire stay. There’s also a small water park with trampolines and slides. The island has an eco-station to manage sand redistribution due to natural currents, maintaining its pristine beaches. Tennis and padel courts with free equipment rentals are available from 7 AM to 10 PM with prior reservations. For a change of pace, two a la carte restaurants are offered: Japanese Corner, requiring advance booking at $95 per person, featuring two menu options—main or vegetarian; and the Italian Pizzeria Il Basilico, open for reservations from 3 PM to 11 PM, with meals ordered from a menu.
The kids’ club, catering to ages 3-12, is small but has Russian-speaking animators and operates from 10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 6 PM. If no Russian-speaking staff are available, communication through online translators on your phone is possible. Adults can enjoy a fitness center with ocean views, open from 7 AM to 11 PM.
The hotel features two bars: Rainbow Bar, located by the reception and main pool, open from 10 AM to midnight, serves a specialty cocktail called Joy Passion, which tastes similar to a Porn Star Martini but is made without martini. The smaller Palm Beach Bar, open from 10 AM to 9:30 PM, is closer to the water villas and has its own beach. Snacks are served there between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM, with portions arranged based on the number of guests at the table. For example, plates might include mini sandwiches, nuggets, peas-filled triangles, cakes, and chocolate-filled pastries. There's a quiet beach nearby, reserved for relaxation and guests aged 12+, offering peace and tranquility without bars or music.
Towels are readily available across all beaches and pools all day without requiring cards. Guests dine under the same food system, so no wristbands are needed. Note that if lunch is provided on the day of arrival, the final meal on departure day will be breakfast, with all-inclusive drinks available until noon.
On my birthday, the hotel sent a cake and decorated the bed in our room as a special touch. For an additional fee, we dined at an oceanfront restaurant, enjoying a seafood set that included:
· Whole grilled lobster and large crab claws;
· Tender octopus and a grilled fish assortment;
· Three types of signature tartars/appetizers (tuna, crab, scallops);
· Grilled vegetables and special sauces.
This was a birthday to remember!
Check-out was prompt at 7:15 AM as planned, and we reached the airport by 7 AM, benefiting from the hotel’s "artificial hour" adjustment to extend the final day of our stay. Staff assisted with luggage and escorted us to the registration desk. Throughout the trip, Maria answered all questions promptly via WhatsApp, remaining friendly and helpful.
Near the reception, there's a small shop selling souvenirs and other items. The hotel accepts cash in dollars or euros, as well as international cards and Russian UnionPay cards.
Will we return to the Maldives? Absolutely! Will we revisit this hotel? With pleasure! 🎉
