I was completely blown away by how delicious the **Lablabi** I had for breakfast was, amazed by the extremely old-school way of getting gas, and ended the day wrapped in a sunset so gorgeous it left me speechless. Here’s a look at the real Djerba you won't find in guidebooks—experiences only possible on a motorcycle road trip. · A mind-blowing, delicious breakfast of "Lablabi" and the start of a very analog journey First things first: food. I tried Lablabi for the very first time at a local spot I found in Houmt Souk. It’s a traditional street food made by tearing up bread into a chickpea soup, and let me tell you, it was shockingly delicious! I instantly felt fully recharged and ready to go. Next up, setting off for the Berber town of Guellala. But before that, my buddy (the motorcycle) needed to eat, too. At the "gas station"? They literally had gas stored in plastic bottles! Watching them glug-glug it straight into the tank was such an analog vibe, I couldn't help but laugh and think, "Wow, I'm really traveling in a foreign land." · Tunisian pink and Japanese cherry blossoms. A reunion across space and time On the way to Guellala, I stopped by "Djerba Hood," the street art town I visited yesterday. I really wanted to see the Japanese cherry blossom art. Apparently, right next to a bright pink blooming tree here in Tunisia, someone painted a cherry blossom tree—a true symbol of Japan! Unfortunately, it wasn't the season for the flowers to bloom, but feeling a connection to Japan all the way out here in Africa made my heart feel so full. I couldn't stop snapping photos. · Meeting the "little entertainers" in Guellala, the town of pottery After riding for about another hour, I finally made it to Guellala! The moment you enter the town, you're greeted by adorable pottery lined up everywhere. It’s a sight that would absolutely make any girl's heart skip a beat. But what stood out the most to me here was interacting with the local kids. Maybe they don’t see many Asian people around, because they all gathered around with so much curiosity. When I said hi, their faces lit up, and they even started showing off tricks on their bikes! It was the warmest welcome ever and totally made my heart melt. · A speechless finale. An abandoned seaside mosque and a fiery sunset Spent the afternoon enjoying a laid-back ride along the coast. Explored an old, abandoned mosque and took photos with some local students. Time on Djerba just flows by so gently. To wrap up the trip, I headed to the bridge connecting the island to the mainland. I parked my bike on a road under construction and waited patiently for the sun to set. The gradient of colors changing across the sky... "Man, I am so glad I came here. This is the best." It was a sunset so stunning it left me speechless, confirming exactly how I felt. On the ride back to Houmt Souk, feeling the night breeze, I caught myself already thinking, "Where should I go next?" "Wow, Tunisian food is actually pretty good!" On this small island in the Mediterranean, from counter meals at local eateries to home-cooked meals at local families' homes—I'll honestly report on everything I ate that made me think, "I absolutely have to write about this on my blog!" [Divine Food ①] Lablabi — The best dish of this trip The absolute No. 1 dish of this trip was Lablabi. Tears of baguette are submerged in chickpea soup, topped with a generous amount of tuna. The aroma of spices and cumin wafts up, and although it looks simple, once you start eating, you can't stop. The earthenware pot is far from photogenic, but before I knew it, I had eaten it all (lol). If you come to Tunisia, you absolutely must try this. Seriously. [Cafeteria Food] Brik, Salad, Baguette — The Reliable Favorite Set At a local café, I ordered **Brik**, a type of fried pastry. It has a thin, crispy crust filled with egg or tuna, and is eaten with a squeeze of lemon. Crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside—this is what you can get for just over 100 yen in Djerba. The Tunisian-style salad that came with it was a mix of tomato, tuna, and harissa (chili paste), much more flavorful than it looked. Apparently, the local style is to tear off pieces of baguette and eat them together. [Seaside Cafe] Coffee and Juice While Gazing at the Blue Sea I took a break at a seaside cafe. The Mediterranean Sea stretched out before me, with rowboats floating on the water—I enjoyed a strong espresso and a cold, reddish-purple juice (probably grenadine?) while gazing at this view. It was a moment when I realized this is why I came to Djerba. [Dinner] Shawarma and French Fries I've had it in Japan before, but this was the dish I wanted to try the most: shawarma! Authentic shawarma in a lively restaurant. It came wrapped in aluminum foil, and when I opened it, it was packed with meat, tomatoes, lettuce, and sauce. The moment I took a bite, I spilled everything. How do people manage to eat it so neatly? (laughs) And the authentic shawarma was amazing! This is something I could eat over and over again without getting tired of it. [Local Home Cooking ①] A Story About Being Impressed by an Egg Dish I was invited to the home of someone who lives on the island and treated to a home-cooked meal. An egg dish with plenty of herbs (like Chakchuka?), a spicy stew, and a green paste with a deep flavor that I couldn't quite identify... Even though we couldn't understand each other's language, "delicious" was conveyed. The egg dish was incredibly delicious. It was simple, yet why was it so different? I think it must be the difference in the blend of spices and love. [Home Cooking ②] Bean and Meat Stew with Baguette On another day when I was invited back, the meal was a tomato-based stew with green peas and meat. The style of eating was to mix the red stir-fry (onion and tomato sauce?) in a small glass bowl in the center into the stew. Soaking it up with the baguette left me speechless. It reaffirmed my belief that home cooking is truly the best. [Something I didn't really like] Danette Assida Zgougou I'll be honest. Danette Assida is a local Tunisian sweet, a cream dessert with pine cone (zgougou) flavor. It has a unique pine resin-like flavor, and apparently it's a staple for Tunisians, but for me, it wasn't just a little strong, it was extremely peculiar... It was a valuable bite in the sense that I could experience a difference in food culture (lol). I tried it after being recommended it as delicious... Huh? I honestly blurted out that it wasn't delicious; it was a taste I couldn't accept. It's amazing that someone thought of eating pine cones… [Bonus] Meatball Pizza A pizza piled high with small meatballs (merguez?) and olives, enjoyed at a local pizzeria. The Tunisian-style pizza was spicy and much better than I expected. Summary: Djerba Island is worth visiting for its food As a tourist destination, Djerba Island is charming with its relaxed pace and white streets. But what left the biggest impression on me this time was the egg dish I was given by a local family and a glass of La La Vie. This trip made me realize that there really are flavors that money can't buy. Day 3 on Djerba Island, starting from Houm Souk. First, breakfast in the bustling city center ☕ We went to a cafe recommended by our guesthouse owner (second photo). Although we were told it was breakfast, to our surprise, it was all sweets! Lots of sweet cakes. After refueling, we started our motorbike journey. With Djerba hood as our final destination, we embarked on another whimsical, aimless trip. Along the way, we were called by children to enter a school (third and fourth photos), and rode through Djerba's only Jewish quarter (fifth photo). Incidentally, the Jewish quarter is heavily guarded, with police officers stationed at the entrance. Then, we stopped our motorbike on the side of the road and saw a well unique to Djerba? A traditional one? and even drank some of the water (sixth and seventh photos). We also listened to an explanation about the Haunted House (top right of the first photo), said to be Djerba's ghost house. It's truly believed that ghosts appear here, and even the locals are scared! It seems to be a popular spot for young people to test their courage; it's the same everywhere, isn't it? Even though the place is scary, it's also endearing. After many detours, we finally arrived at Djerba hood. It's an area of ​​Djerba Island with lots of street art, and you can see some amazing pieces. I was overwhelmed that it was all free to see. I even found some favorite pieces, and there was even a piece of art featuring Japanese cherry blossoms! And it was right next to a tree with Tunisian pink flowers! It was fantastic. I really like the art that feels distinctly Tunisian. (8th picture) And then, instead of just wandering around again, there was an unusually strong storm that day... so we stopped at a restaurant along the road for lunch and a break until the wind subsided a bit. Then, after riding my motorbike a little further, I came across a building with a huge crowd! I went inside and found out it was a cafe that had just opened that day. Apparently, in Tunisia, they give everyone snacks and drinks on their opening day. It was a great experience. It looked like we wouldn't be able to see the sunset that day, so unfortunately, we headed back to Houm Souk and ended our motorbike trip. A 3-night, 4-day motorcycle trip on Djerba Island, Tunisia. Most people probably use taxis to get around Djerba. This time, we got around the island by motorcycle. Unfortunately, on the first day, our flight was delayed due to an emergency onboard patient, resulting in a major delay and a late arrival, so we spent the day relaxing at our accommodation. And then, on the second day, the long-awaited start of our trip! Ghazi Mustapha Fortress ↓ Marina Djerba ↓ We took a leisurely ride along the road toward Sidi Salem, all the way to the back of the airport, near Edzira Beach, and enjoyed the sunset. From near Houmt Souk Central, where our accommodation is located, we headed to Ghazi Mustapha Fortress. The historic building was breathtaking! It was here that we finally realized we'd arrived in the Arabian world. (Photos 1 and 2) The Djerba Marina is nearby, so we stopped for a coffee break there. ☕ The view is amazing, right in front of the ocean. After relaxing, we enjoyed a sunset soak by the sea along the marina. Apparently, it's a popular date spot for young local couples because it's so quiet! (Photos 3-7) Then, we took a leisurely motorbike ride to the airport. There were plenty of park-like spots along the road where you could park your bike and stroll around, so we enjoyed the atmosphere. It was sunset time, so we decided to take a stroll along the airport to watch the sunset! We were able to see a variety of sunsets from various vantage points. The sunsets looked different depending on the location, and every spot was a new experience.
