Mahamuni Temple Mu Buddha: The person who believes in good thoughts, the Buddha will be blessed!
There are many temples in Mandalay, Myanmar, and Maha Muni Temple is regarded as the most dazzling temple in Mandalay. It really shines. After all, all kinds of gold-plated beams and pillars decorated with jadeites are enough for us to admire for a long time;
. Every day, there are many believers who put gold on the Buddha, but only men are allowed to stick, and women can only worship outside. The statue of Sakyamuni in the temple is about 4 meters high. The whole body is covered with gold foil, which is used by devout devotees and tourists from all over the world. You can buy a piece of gold foil to stick to the Buddha, but the woman can only admire in the outer hall, not close to the Buddha. Next to the Buddhist temple is a street where Buddha statues are made. Visitors can also go shopping for some beautiful Buddhist art souvenirs. The Buddha scrubs his cheeks. This ritual has attracted countless local Buddhists to visit the daily.
Maha Muni Temple is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in northern Myanmar. According to legend, it was the Buddha who personally opened the light and cast a statue of Buddha here. The Buddha statue here has been worshipped by the kings and people of Myanmar since ancient times. The purity of the Buddha's body is golden, and the Buddha's ceremonial crown is adorned with jewels and diamonds that the people of the past are offering to the Buddha. The magic is that the Buddha face is always smiling from any angle. The attraction comes from worshippers from all over the world.

Myanmar Hsipaw: Little Bagan to Sunset Hill Shan Hills Tea Forest Walk
#arrivalguide Hsipaw’s “Little Bagan” is a cluster of 14 weather-worn stupas on a low hill 2 km north of the market, named by backpackers for the silhouette, not the scale. I walked there from my guesthouse at 4 pm (no tuk-tuk needed, the lane is flat dirt). From Little Bagan the trail continues west into the Shan hills tea forest—smallholder plots of Camellia sinensis intercropped with jackfruit and bodhi. The path to Sunset Hill is unmarked: follow the power lines, then a red-earth track for 40 min uphill. At the top (elevation ~900 m) you get a 180° view over the Dokhtawaddy River bend and the haze of the Palaung hills beyond. A local kid sold me a thermos of laphet-yay (pickled tea leaf salad wrap) for 1,000 kyat—cash only, no mobile pay works up there. I wore flip-flops and regretted it; the red earth is loose and the tea rows are terraced with 30 cm lips. No entry fee anywhere, but donate 500 kyat at the Little Bagan stupa urn. Mistake: I started at 5 pm in July and the monsoon cloud swallowed the sun by 5:40—go in March/April for clean sunsets, or accept the mist as the mood. Hsipaw town runs on kyat cash; the KBZ ATM sometimes rejects foreign cards. Question: does the tea-forest walk beat the famous Hsipaw riverboat to Nawng Pin, or are they different meals entirely?

Mr. Bike Hsipaw Trekking
We couldn't have had a better guide than Erik of Mr.Bike to discover Hsipaw and its surroundings. I found his number on internet and we have been able to organise very easily our trekking beforehand through WhatsApp.
My partner and I were joined by another couple for the trek (one of our requests was to be part of a group if possible).
Erik was the perfect guide giving us loads of information but also being a full member of our group and being part of our serious and less serious conversations. He was leading us at a good walking pace, which was great, but also adapted his speed if one of us was getting tired. Very relaxed and attentive at the same time it was a pleasure to spend time with him. We can only highly recommend his tour, he knows the region and its culture by heart and he is a person that you gain at knowing!
My highlights were: the dinner/evening with a Shan family, meeting his grandmother and the "bamboo" lunch!
Thanks Erik and Mr.Bike

#asiabudgetchallenge
If you’re craving calm vibes and stunning landscapes, Hsipaw is a little mountain town that’s big on charm. I spent a few days hiking through rice paddies, chatting with Shan locals, and relaxing by waterfalls. No crowds, just fresh air and authenticity. The train ride there from Mandalay is a highlight in itself — crossing the Goteik Viaduct is a heart-racing moment!
📍Destination: Hsipaw, Myanmar
💸Rough Budget: $20 (budget guesthouse, meals, hikes)
💡Top Tip: Take the train from Pyin Oo Lwin for one of Asia’s most scenic rail journeys.
