My Huanglong Itinerary Check-in Morning Arrived at Huanglong Scenic Area. Took the cable car to the upper station to save energy. Walked toward the Five-Color Ponds while enjoying the mountain scenery. Afternoon Explored the colorful travertine pools and stopped at several viewpoints. Took plenty of photos but also spent time simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Walked downhill along the wooden boardwalk, passing waterfalls, forests, and smaller pools. Returned to the entrance and continued the journey to Jiuzhaigou. Looking back, Huanglong wasn't just another scenic destination. It was a place that reminded me to slow down, appreciate nature, and enjoy every step of the journey. Some places impress you with their beauty, but Huanglong surprised me with the sense of peace it gave me. It's a memory I know I'll carry with me for a very long time.

Many people mention that the high-speed train from Chengdu to Huanglong Jiuzhai only takes about 2 hours. While that's true, the total journey from central Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou is much longer. Here's my actual travel timeline: · 2:24 PM – Took Bus 54 from KuanZai Alley · 3:11 PM – Arrived at Chengdu West Railway Station (成都西站) · 4:02 PM – D280 Fuxing High-Speed Train departed · 6:17 PM – Arrived at Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station (黄龙九寨站) · 6:44 PM – Official shuttle bus departed · 7:14 PM – Short restroom stop at a grocery store · 8:42 PM – Arrived at Moon Bay, Jiuzhaigou The total journey took about 6 hours 20 minutes, from leaving Chengdu until arriving in Jiuzhaigou. For planning purposes, I would recommend allowing 6–7 hours instead of only looking at the 2-hour train journey. Tips from my experience: · Chengdu East Railway Station has more train departures, but I chose West Station as I stayed near Kuanzhai Alley. The smaller station was easier to navigate, and the 51 minutes before departure gave me enough time to use the restroom, refill my water bottle, complete the manual passport check, and walk to the platform without rushing. · If you're a foreign traveller, reserve the official shuttle bus through Tripcom in advance. Day 2 Visit Huanglong 🚅 Chengdu East 8:12 → Huanglong Jiuzhaigou 10:01 After getting off the train, follow the crowd upstairs and take the bus on the right side. Buy bus tickets in advance on "Aba Tourism." You can choose to go to Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou; if there are many people, you can carpool. Hiring a local driver is safer and they know the roads well. 🚌 10:20 Bus ¥28/person, about 1 hour to arrive. Method: Cable car up 🚡, hike down 🚶 for an efficient tour. Huanglong is prone to altitude sickness, so it’s recommended to take the cable car. ※ If you need to store luggage, get off when the driver calls for hikers, store luggage for free behind the service hall, then take the free sightseeing bus from the queue area to the cable car station. Otherwise, you’ll have to make a round trip like we did. 🎫 Tickets: 170/person + cable car up 80/person + sightseeing bus one way 15/person. 💊 The scenery is really beautiful, but altitude sickness is tough. You can buy Rhodiola and oxygen in advance, but we managed without. We walked and took photos for over 4 hours, then picked up luggage around 5 pm. 🚌 Depart for Jiuzhaigou, the official bus stops by the roadside. You can buy tickets online or from the driver on site. Carpooling is more convenient with more people. 🏠 Accommodation: Near Guoda parking lot, closer to the scenic area but fewer food options. On the way, places like Moon Bay have more lively food options. 🥩 We randomly entered a hot pot restaurant to warm up. The owner of Da Niu Wang Yak Soup was very friendly and even gave us yak yogurt. Finally, a warm meal for the day. Day 3 Jiuzhaigou One-Day Tour Jiuzhaigou opens at 8:30. In the off-season, a late start is okay; the park’s scheduling is very efficient. 🎫 160/person There are luggage lockers at the entrance: large 15, small 10. Take the shuttle bus inside the park. In the off-season, it goes directly to the highest point without stopping at Shuzheng Village. We randomly got off at the highest point on the right line. Tour order: Arrow Bamboo Lake → Panda Lake → Five Flower Lake → Pearl Shoal Waterfall → Nuorilang Transfer Center → (left line) Long Lake → Five Color Pool → take the bus back to Nuorilang Center for lunch → Nuorilang Waterfall → then head back. Return: In the off-season, carpooling for the daytime return only needs about 2 hours reserved. Huanglong energy-saving route field test! 🚡 I did my research before going to Huanglong and found that the entire uphill climb is quite intense. I decided on the cable car up + sightseeing bus + hike down route. It's all downhill, saves energy, and helps prevent altitude sickness. It took about 4 hours in total. If you're traveling with people who aren't as fit, you could just take the cable car to see the Five-Color Pool and leave, but you'd miss many beautiful pools further down, which I think is a shame. Step-by-step route: 1. Take the free shuttle bus (5 mins) from the main entrance to the Hongyanguan Cable Car station 2. Cable car up (CNY 80, 8 mins; the view of the valley from above is amazing) to Wanglongping at 3,450m 3. Buy a sightseeing bus ticket (CNY 20) to the right of the cable car exit (a must-buy! Walking takes 40 mins uphill and carries a high risk of altitude sickness). It's a 6-min ride to the foot of the Five-Color Pool 4. Walk 800m along the flat boardwalk to the Five-Color Pool (3,576m, the heart of Huanglong). Take your time walking around to see the colorful mineral-rich water. The lighting is best between 9:00 AM–11:00 AM 5. Five-Color Pool → Huanglong Ancient Temple → all downhill boardwalk, no more climbing. Order: Zhengyan Pool → Suoluo Yingcai Pool → Mirror Reflection Pool → Bonsai Pool → Golden Sand Pavement → Xishen Cave → Liantai Waterfall → Yingbin Pool 6. 10-min walk from Yingbin Pool to the exit Altitude sickness prevention (key points): · Walk slowly the whole time. No running or jumping. The higher the altitude, the slower you should go. Rest for 5 mins every 20 mins · We didn't bring oxygen tanks and only had mild ear ringing and headaches, which went away quickly · Bring some snacks (avoid sweets) to keep your energy up. Fill a thermos with warm water; it's very dry at high altitudes, so drink plenty · Stay at the Jiuzhaigou entrance (around 2,000m altitude) the night before. Don't come straight from Chengdu; this reduces the chance of altitude sickness What to wear (for the season I went): · Short sleeves + thin sun-protective clothing + windbreaker. There's a big temperature difference between morning and evening, so wear layers you can easily take off · Non-slip sneakers. The boardwalk is often slippery, so don't wear sandals or flip-flops · The UV rays are strong at high altitudes. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are essential · Wet wipes and basic medicine (cold medicine, stomach medicine). Strollers are not recommended; there are too many stairs Ticket and transport tips: · Admission ticket is CNY 170 (free for children under 1.2m). Cable car up is CNY 80, down is CNY 40. The most convenient route is flying into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH) and then taking a shuttle or private car to the Jiuzhaigou accommodation zone. Another option is traveling through Chengdu and taking a train or bus. However, if you only have 4 days and 3 nights, flying into JZH will save you a lot of time. One important thing to remember: Jiuzhaigou is a high-altitude area. Don't overpack your schedule on the first day. The primary way to get around is using the park’s shuttle buses combined with walking along the wooden boardwalks. Currently, the park uses a pre-booking system and limits the number of daily visitors. During the peak season (April 1 – Nov 15), the maximum capacity is 41,000 people per day, and the park closes at 6:00 PM according to the latest official announcements.  💙 Five Flower Lake A must-see spot! The water features multiple shades ranging from sky blue and green to deep navy. When surrounded by red and yellow trees in October, the contrast is breathtakingly beautiful. 🍁 I suggest setting aside enough time to view it from different angles rather than just getting off the bus, taking a quick photo, and rushing off. ⸻ 💦 Nuorilang Waterfall A massive waterfall that is one of Jiuzhaigou’s most iconic images. Visiting during the autumn foliage season provides a stunning backdrop of colorful mountains and trees, making for incredible photos. ⸻ 🌲 Shuzheng Valley This zone is perfect for a slow walk because it features a continuous series of small and large lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The color of the water changes with the light and mineral content, creating layers of blue, green, and golden yellow. 🏔️💛 The atmosphere is very different from Jiuzhaigou. Jiuzhaigou = Lakes + Waterfalls + Forests While Huanglong = Mineral Pools + High Mountains + Unique Landscapes If you love nature, I think visiting both is more rewarding than choosing just one. 💡 However, be prepared: Huanglong is at a higher altitude and requires uphill walking. Also, if you travel during October 1–6, which is China’s Golden Week holiday, it will be exceptionally crowded. For 2025, officials have already stated that tickets for October 1–6 are sold out at full capacity.  So, if you have a choice, avoiding Golden Week will make for a much more comfortable trip. ⸻ 🎒 What to pack?
