A zero-complaint summer escape. This city can’t stay hidden anymore
While some squeeze by West Lake to watch the crowds, I’m feeling the 25℃ breeze by Tai Lake. You don’t have to rely on air conditioning to survive July and August. In just 2 hours by high-speed train, you can switch to a city that’s completely cool and has zero complaints—some offer water town charm, others have wild grassland fun, and some are simply green cities with natural air conditioning. The best part is fewer people and a genuine experience, no filters needed.
One Wuxi | Jiangsu
⏰ It’s best to head out after 3 PM and take a taxi straight to Yuantouzhu. But today, we’re not talking about Yuantouzhu—we’re focusing on Nianhuawan.
📍 Nianhuawan only comes alive at dusk. After 6:30 PM when the lights come on, walk on the stone paths in wooden clogs beside Xiangyue Flower Street lit with reed lamps. The air carries sandalwood and the warmth of sun-soaked stones.
🍜 On the right inside, “Hua Wuque” serves chilled sweet taro shoots, perfectly sweet without being cloying.
⚠️ Don’t visit during the day. It’s sunny, and regular tickets differ from night tickets. When buying, check that the night entry time is after 6 PM.
Reserve the next morning for the Lingshan Grand Buddha.
🚄 It’s a 15-minute taxi ride from Nianhuawan. Arrive before 9 AM to avoid crowds at the plaza. At the Buddha’s feet, catch the Nine Dragons bathing performance at 10:30 AM—the splashing water feels refreshingly cool. If you’re with elders, consider a combined ticket including the Brahma Palace, which has the strongest air conditioning and a seated performance of “Blessings.”
Spend two hours in the afternoon at Huishan Ancient Town. Avoid the main street—it’s full of tourists.
📍 Turn into the alley opposite Jichang Garden, where an old shop sells Huishan tofu pudding. It’s savory, with chili oil and dried shrimp, only 5 yuan.
⚠️ Jichang Garden is closed for maintenance on Mondays. Don’t go for nothing.
Two Yanbian | Jilin
Many ask me, “What can you do in Yanbian in summer? Isn’t it just cold noodles?” Yes, but you’re missing how comfortable 28℃ in Yanbian feels.
📍 Head straight to Dunhua’s Liuding Mountain Cultural Tourism Area. Before 10 AM, the mountain is still misty, like stepping into an ink painting.
If you can only pick one spot, choose Liuding Mountain.
⏰ Get up early. Take the 6:30 AM high-speed train from Yanji to Dunhua, a half-hour ride. Then a taxi to the scenic area costs about 15 yuan.
🍜 At the entrance, an aunt sells freshly made rice cakes and rice wine. The rice cakes are cut fresh and dipped in soybean flour—cheaper and fresher than city trendy shops. Climb 518 steps to the foot of the Golden Ding Buddha. From the viewing platform, you can see the entire Dunhua basin, with a cool breeze that makes you not want to leave.
⚠️ Avoid a trap: don’t join a day tour. Independent travel is totally doable. The last high-speed train back to Yanji leaves at 8:30 PM, so you have plenty of time.
Three Xilingol League | Inner Mongolia
If you can only visit one grassland in summer, I choose Wulagai. Don’t ask why—it’s wild, uncrowded, and you can chase clouds by car.
📍 Drive from Xilinhot for three and a half hours to the Wulagai management area.
🍜 On the way, stop at Bayin Hushuo town. The “Grassland Fragrance” grilled lamb chops there must be ordered by phone an hour in advance, or you’ll be waiting at the restaurant in tears.
⏰ The golden half hour for photos on the grassland is from 4 to 6 PM, when the light slants over the grass waves. Even your phone can capture wallpaper-worthy shots.
If you have kids, don’t just stand on the grassland watching.
📍 On the east side of Wulagai Lake, there’s a shallow creek only calf-deep where kids can splash and collect stones while adults sit nearby eating watermelon.
⚠️ Mid-July to early August is the rainy season. Each rain cools the grassland, and nighttime temperatures can drop to 15℃. Bring a light down jacket or windbreaker.
Four Taiyuan | Shanxi
Taiyuan is often just a transfer stop to Pingyao, with few staying overnight. But in July, Taiyuan’s big temperature difference between morning and night means you can wear long sleeves. It’s a true hidden gem for summer escapes.
📍 The Jin Temple Museum should be your first stop.
🚄 It’s a 20-minute taxi ride from Taiyuan South Station.
⏰ Arrive at 8:30 AM when it opens. Start at the Offering Hall to see the Yuzhao Flying Beam, a rare cross-shaped beam in ancient architecture. Standing on it, you can view the Song Dynasty polychrome sculptures in the Holy Mother Hall, with light just right from the east—few people, cool, and a full experience.
Don’t rush to leave at noon.
🍜 Outside Jin Temple, “Old Taiyuan” serves hand-shaved noodles. You can hear the noodles hitting the pot. Try the tomato and egg with meat sauce topping—14 yuan fills you up.
In the afternoon, head to Tianlong Mountain.
📍 It’s only a 15-minute taxi ride from Jin Temple to the Tianlong Mountain Grottoes.
⚠️ The mountain road is winding; take medicine if you get car sick. The Buddha faces in the grottoes are called the “Venus of the East.” Due to weathering, the main cave is closed to close-up viewing, but the mountain’s outline and the distant Fen River still impress. If you’re not tired after descending, stop by Jinyang Lake Park for sunset, where the lake glows warm orange.
Five Huangshi | Hubei
Huangshi is a weekend summer escape secretly loved by Wuhan locals.
📍 Chengyue Island sounds like it’s pulled from an ancient poem. This small island is hidden in the middle of Cihu Lake, connected to the shore by a nine-bend bridge.
🍜 First, eat. The island’s only tea house, “Chengyue Xuan,” serves mung bean soup in an old-fashioned enamel pot, chilled—a sip feels life-giving.
⏰ Arrive after 5 PM. The light hits the white walls and black tiles, shadows fall into the water, and the whole island is filled with only wind and birdsong.
🚄 Take the high-speed train from Wuhan Station to Huangshi North Station, 40 minutes. A taxi to Cihu Lake costs about 20 yuan. If you just want a place to zone out for half a day, Chengyue Island is enough.
⚠️ The island has many trees and mosquitoes. Bring insect repellent.
Six Pingdingshan | Henan
Many only know Pingdingshan for coal mining. But if you head to Lushan County, at the foot of Yao Mountain hides a Central Plains Buddha, 208 meters tall. Standing there looking up can even fix your neck.
📍 Navigate directly to “Yao Mountain – Central Plains Buddha Scenic Area.”
🚄 Take the high-speed train from Zhengzhou to Pingdingshan West Station, 50 minutes. A shuttle bus from the station goes straight to the scenic area, a 40-minute ride.
⏰ Visit the Buddha scenic area in the morning when it’s quiet. At the Buddha’s feet, you can hear the wind ringing the bells.
🍜 Outside the scenic area, “Fumanlou” serves hot pot dishes with cabbage, vermicelli, tofu, and meat stewed together. For 20 yuan, you get a full pot with two steamed buns.
⚠️ Don’t take the electric cart inside the scenic area. It’s a 15-minute walk, and waiting for the cart takes longer than walking.
Seven Chizhou | Anhui
Jiuhua Mountain is so famous that Chizhou city nearby often gets overlooked. But if you just want to escape the heat, I don’t recommend squeezing up the mountain. Instead, stay a night in Chizhou city.
📍 From Chizhou Station, take a taxi to Pingtian Lake in the city for 7 yuan.
⏰ At 6 PM, rent a shared electric bike by the lake and ride along. The air carries the lake’s mist and the scent of plants, a hundred times more comfortable than air conditioning.
🍜 Try “Xiao Sanyuan” for stinky mandarin fish. It’s not the overpowering fermented kind but mildly stinky with fresh flavor. The fish meat flakes like garlic cloves. Paired with a bowl of crispy rice, I ate two bowls alone that day.
⚠️ This restaurant only serves dinner and late-night snacks, opening at 5 PM. Don’t go at noon.
Eight Haikou | Hainan
Sanya is too expensive, so Haikou is the best budget alternative.
📍 Qilou Old Street isn’t a fake ancient street refurbished beyond recognition. People still live upstairs, and downstairs are old bookstores and traditional tea shops.
⏰ Arrive before 10 AM. Sunlight filters through the arcade eaves, shining on the colorful old Nanyang windows. Every shot looks cinematic.
🍜 At the street corner, “Chen Ji” serves dry Hainan rice noodles with a bowl of conch soup for 8 yuan.
⚠️ Don’t add chili. Haikou’s chili is yellow lantern chili sauce; a small spoonful can make you cry.
In the afternoon, visit Volcano Crater Park.
🚄 It’s a 25-minute taxi ride from Qilou.
📍 At the crater’s bottom, the temperature is 3 to 4 degrees cooler than the surface, like a natural air-conditioned room. From the viewing platform, you can see the Qiongzhou Strait, with sea breeze carrying moisture.
If you still have energy, head back to the city in the evening to Wugong Temple.
🍜 At the entrance, “Wugong Temple Cold Drink Shop” serves qingbuliang, a coconut water base with barley, mung beans, coconut meat, and shaved ice for 10 yuan a cup. Only after drinking it does summer feel complete.
⏰ In closing: Of these eight cities, I personally recommend Wuxi and Wulagai the most—one perfect for solo daydreaming, the other for family fun. Which summer escape have you visited this year? Or do you have a favorite hidden summer city? Tell me in the comments, and I’ll visit next time.
