Each one was designed during a different period of the Nguyen Dynasty, and the architecture often reflects the personality and tastes of the emperor. If you're exploring Hue, these are five tombs I recommend visiting: Minh Mang Tomb - probably the most harmonious of the five. Temples, gates, lakes and pavilions are arranged symmetrically among green hills and pine trees. It's especially beautiful if you enjoy traditional Vietnamese architecture. Tu Duc Tomb - my choice for atmosphere. The complex feels more like a peaceful imperial retreat, with a lake, small islands, pavilions and lots of greenery. Tu Duc actually used the grounds during his lifetime. Khai Dinh Tomb - completely different from the others. It's smaller, darker and much more dramatic, combining Vietnamese and European influences. The richly decorated interior of Thien Dinh Palace is the highlight. Dong Khanh Tomb - less visited but definitely worth seeing. It combines traditional Nguyen architecture with influences that appeared during the French colonial period. It's also a good choice if you want to escape the biggest tourist crowds. Thieu Tri Tomb - the quietest experience of the five. The complex has a more open layout and feels much less touristy than Minh Mang, Tu Duc or Khai Dinh. Come here if you want to explore Hue's imperial history without crowds. You don't need to visit every imperial tomb in Hue, but seeing several makes the differences between them much more interesting. If you want to discover places that many visitors skip, these five hidden gems are worth adding to your itinerary. 1. Ho Quyen Arena One of the most unusual historical sites in Hue. Built in the 19th century, this imperial arena was used for staged fights between elephants and tigers, watched by the emperor and royal court. The circular stone structure still survives today and feels completely different from Hue's palaces and temples. 2. Bunkers Hill A quiet hill covered with old military bunkers and surrounded by beautiful scenery. Will it be drip coffee, french press or express and how many shots? What about a hot coffee or iced? The varieties are large; with cininmon, chocolate, whipcream, coconut, caramel, salted, sugar and milks. These are just the basic varieties. Have you ever heard of egg coffee? The barrista whips up the egg yolk and condensed milk together, then adds it to the coffee. This is a delicious treat, the coffee flavour is not so strong. I had many in Hanoi and some were much better than others, so try a few coffee shops before making a verdict. Salted coffee also was a standard order; two shots with condensed milk and salted cream. I preferred the ice instead of the hot and again they could be saltier and the cream smoother at different bars. The iced coconut was also a great sweet pick-me up for the hot days in Hoi An and Hue. Hue had the highest density of bars for me, maybe because I was burned out form the fast pace of travelling arund and just needed to get some work done. It looks like restoration or maintenance works are actively happening behind the scenes, so the old structures feel much safer to explore than before. The Epic Dragon: The massive concrete dragon in the middle of the lake is just as breathtaking as it looks in photos. Climbing up inside it and looking out over the lake is an unreal experience. The Nostalgia Kick: Walking around the overgrown amphitheater and checking out the abandoned water slides is incredibly fun and perfect for unique photos.
