After traveling through Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh City, I truly feel: the scenery is worth seeing once, but the experience really doesn't deserve a second visit! The internet over-filters Vietnam, and the frustrating parts of the real trip are impossible to hide! I've put together a comprehensive, unfiltered guide to Vietnam, covering the scenery worth seeing, must-eat food, and hardcore tips to avoid pitfalls. If you're planning to go, you must read this to avoid 99% of the traps! 🌿 First, let's give credit where it's due! All the beauty Vietnam is worth traveling for To be fair, the relaxed and healing vibe of Vietnam is unique to Southeast Asia, and it's truly a top-tier, low-cost travel destination! ✅ Da Nang | The world's most beautiful coastline lives up to its reputation The mountain and sea scenery at Lang Co Bay is unique. The blue sea meets the blue sky, and the coastline winds on and on. Driving or cycling while feeling the sea breeze blows all your worries away. My Khe Beach is fine and clean, with crystal-clear water. Watching the sunrise in the morning and chasing the sunset in the evening, with golden light covering the sea, is gentle and healing. The French village on Ba Na Hills is dreamy, with cable cars, European castles, and mountains of flowers. You don't need to go to Europe to take French-style blockbusters, and the night view is incredibly romantic. ✅ Nha Trang | A lazy and cozy slow-paced island life A niche island with super low prices where you can enjoy seafood freely for just a few dollars! Fresh lobster, scallops, and sea urchins are caught and cooked on the spot, fresh and delicious, with great value for money. You can experience mud baths, island hopping, and diving to see coral. The pace is slow, perfect for relaxing. There are many seaside cafes, and just sitting there watching the sea is the best way to travel. ✅ Hanoi | A retro, vibrant old city Hoan Kiem Lake is quiet and gentle. The 36 Streets are full of local life, with old streets and French architecture intertwined, creating a full retro atmosphere. Authentic Vietnamese coffee is everywhere on the street. Drip coffee is rich and smooth, and iced coffee is refreshing. Paired with a baguette, you can unlock an authentic afternoon tea for just a few dollars. It's cozy and comfortable. ✅ Ho Chi Minh City | Romantic French and Nanyang style The Notre Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office have their own retro filters. Pure white buildings paired with red brick walls make for atmospheric photos. The city is full of French colonial architecture, shaded by green trees, and the streets are full of life. It's super healing to take a slow city walk. Besides that, Vietnam's overall cost is super low! Accommodation is affordable and comfortable, food is good and cheap, and transportation costs are low. Compared to Thailand and Malaysia, you can have a great time for an average of 3,000+ per person. It's truly a top choice for low-cost travel abroad. ❗️ Major warning! Why I definitely won't visit a second time? (Real, painful pitfalls) The scenery is gentle, but the trip is full of frustrating things! Every complaint is not a small issue but a major flaw that lowers the travel experience and affects your mood. Every one of these is a big pitfall that tourists have personally stepped into! 1️⃣ Double standards at entry! Customs specifically targets Chinese people for bribes 😡 This is the most speechless opening blow for all Chinese tourists! Whether it's Hanoi, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City airport, Vietnamese customs has formed a default routine of specifically targeting Chinese tourists for tips. When handing over your passport, staff will whisper in Chinese, "10, 20," or even reach out to flip through your passport, signaling for cash. If you pay, you pass quickly; if you don't, they deliberately make things difficult, repeatedly checking materials and delaying indefinitely. You watch Western, Japanese, and Korean tourists pass through quickly while you are discriminated against. Even with complete documents and legal entry, being maliciously harassed ruins your mood the moment you land. 2️⃣ Overcharging everywhere, ripping off tourists is the norm There is almost no fixed price for tourists in Vietnam; quoting based on the person is an industry rule. Street food, fruit, taxis, and vendors all double or triple the price if you are a foreigner. They don't weigh fruit and just shout a price. Local shops have one price for locals and another for tourists. You have to haggle repeatedly for everything, which is exhausting and ruins the relaxation of travel. 3️⃣ Transportation is full of traps, and taxi scams are hard to prevent Vietnam doesn't have a standardized taxi system, and there are many traps! Taxis hailed on the street will maliciously speed up the meter. A short trip of a few kilometers can cost more than 10 times the normal price, reaching hundreds of thousands of VND, which is absurd. Even if you use Grab, you will encounter many fake drivers and cloned cars. They might raise the price halfway, demand unexplained highway fees, or take detours to rip you off. Motorcycle taxis on the street are a disaster area; they quote a low price before you get on, then demand more when you get off. If you don't pay, they won't let you leave. New tourists can't defend against this. 4️⃣ "Instagrammable" spots are serious catfishing, with a huge gap from reality The online filters have fooled countless people! Popular spots like the Po Nagar Cham Towers, trendy streets, and niche check-in points are very ordinary in reality. The so-called "ancient monuments" are just small, dilapidated temples with cramped spaces and messy environments, lacking the stunning beauty advertised. Many seaside "Instagrammable" spots are full of trash and have murky water, completely different from the blue sea and sky in the filters. You will be very disappointed if you come just for the photos. 5️⃣ Too many hidden traps in accommodation, high chance of stepping on landmines Highly-rated sea-view homestays and trendy hotels online are all scams! Many high ratings are fake. Near check-in, the landlord suddenly tells you "the air conditioner is broken" or "the room is under maintenance," forcing you to change room types. The full sea-view room you originally booked is replaced with a windowless interior room or a low-quality side-view room, and they refuse to compensate for the price difference. Some old hotels have poor hygiene, are damp and moldy, have insects, unstable water pressure, and noisy air conditioning. The stay experience is terrible, and you spend money to be miserable. 6️⃣ Double standards in security checks + terrible attitude, extremely poor experience Security checks at popular attractions and venues discriminate against Chinese people! Western tourists wearing shorts or sleeveless tops are let through directly, while Chinese tourists are pulled aside and forced to buy scarves or jackets to cover up. These double standards are extremely uncomfortable. Staff are cold and rigid, deliberately and repeatedly searching Chinese people's backpacks, arbitrarily detaining small items, and acting indifferent and arrogant. The whole process is very oppressive. 7️⃣ Urban infrastructure is backward, and the environment is dirty and messy As core cities in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are far below expectations. The streets have messy, tangled wires, are narrow and crowded, and electric scooters drive recklessly. There is heavy exhaust and dust. The roads in the old town are uneven and full of potholes, with trash everywhere. In the rainy season, it's muddy and waterlogged, and dusty. The overall environment is chaotic, lacking a clean and tidy travel atmosphere. 8️⃣ Diet is monotonous and easily causes gastrointestinal discomfort Vietnamese food seems to have a lot of variety, but the taste is extremely monotonous! The whole trip is just rice noodles, baguettes, spring rolls, and drip coffee. You get tired of it after 2 meals. The taste is bland, and the seasoning is simple. Moreover, the hygiene of street food varies, and many tourists get diarrhea or gastroenteritis the day after landing. Travelers with sensitive stomachs or weak constitutions will find it very hard to adapt. 📝 Honest summary | Advice for everyone planning to go to Vietnam ✅ Suitable for: People with limited budgets, first-time travelers abroad, those who like slow-paced vacations, casual travelers, and those who don't take things too seriously. Going once in a lifetime is enough. ❌ Not suitable for: People who are afraid of trouble, hate traps, care about service experience, are sensitive, or pursue a worry-free and comfortable trip. I honestly advise against it! Vietnam's beauty is real; the sea breeze is gentle, prices are touching, and the atmosphere is full. But Vietnam's pitfalls are also real; discrimination, traps, serious rip-offs, and poor experience. Da Nang is one of those cities where you don't need to plan every minute. You can spend the morning at the beach, visit the mountains in the afternoon, and finish the day with some good local food. I spent 3 days exploring Da Nang, and here’s the itinerary and a few practical tips that I found useful. ✅️ Da Nang Highlights · My Khe Beach · Ba Na Hills & Golden Bridge · Marble Mountains · Son Tra Peninsula & Linh Ung Pagoda · Mi Quang, Banh Xeo and local seafood · A relaxed city with beaches, mountains and plenty of good cafés ✅️ How to Get Around For short trips around the city, Grab is probably the easiest option. If you're comfortable riding a motorbike, renting one is another good way to explore Da Nang, especially around Son Tra Peninsula. For places such as Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains or Hoi An, I found a private car more convenient, especially when travelling with family or a small group. ✅️Day 1 – My Khe Beach & Da Nang City I would start with My Khe Beach in the morning. It's especially nice around sunrise when there are fewer tourists and plenty of locals exercising or swimming. After breakfast, head towards the city center. You can visit Da Nang Cathedral, walk along the Han River and see Dragon Bridge. For food, don't miss Mi Quang and Banh Xeo. A local meal can usually cost around 30,000–80,000 VND (US$1–3) depending on the restaurant. In the evening, you can simply walk around the river or find a café and enjoy the city. ✅️ Day 2 – Ba Na Hills & Golden Bridge I would keep one full day for Ba Na Hills. The Golden Bridge is obviously the main attraction, but there is more to see around the complex, including the French Village, gardens and other attractions. The cable car ride itself is part of the experience, with some impressive views over the mountains. The ticket is around 900,000 VND (US$35), depending on the ticket type and current pricing. One thing to remember: the weather at Ba Na Hills can be completely different from Da Nang city. It can be sunny and hot in the city but cloudy, cold or rainy up on the mountain. So check the weather before going and bring a light jacket or raincoat. ✅️ Day 3 – Marble Mountains & Son Tra Start the morning at Marble Mountains. There are caves, temples and viewpoints, so give yourself around 2–3 hours rather than just making a quick stop. After that, head to Son Tra Peninsula. The road along the peninsula is beautiful, and you can stop at Linh Ung Pagoda to see the huge Lady Buddha overlooking the sea. If you still have time, go back towards the beach for coffee or seafood before your trip ends. ✅️ A Few Tips Stay around My Khe or An Thuong if it's your first time. You'll have plenty of restaurants, cafés and the beach nearby. Go to the beach early. Sunrise is one of my favorite times at My Khe, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed. Don't plan too much in one day. Da Nang is quite easy to explore, so there is no real need to rush from one attraction to another. Keep some cash with you. Small local restaurants and street-food places may not accept cards. Try local restaurants away from the most touristy areas. You can often find better prices and a more local atmosphere. ✅️ Estimated Budget Hotel: US$20–50/night Food: US$10–20/day Local transport: US$5–15/day Attractions: around US$35–50 For a 3-day trip, I would budget roughly US$100–180 per person, excluding flights and shopping. ✅️ My take What I like most about Da Nang is the balance. You have a proper city, a long beach, mountains, good food and plenty of cafés, but the pace is still quite relaxed. Today, nature is slowly reclaiming the site, turning it into one of Vietnam's most unusual hidden attractions. The dragon is the highlight of the park. You can climb inside and walk up to its mouth, where you'll get a great view over the lake. While graffiti has changed the original appearance, it also reminds you that this place has taken on a life of its own. 💡 Practical tips: It's located about 10 km from Hue city center. 🛌 6 Things I Wish Every First-Time Traveler Knew About Vietnam’s Overnight Trains There’s something romantic about traveling through Vietnam by train. You board in one city at night, climb into your bunk, fall asleep to the sound of the rails, and wake up hundreds of kilometers away with a completely different landscape outside the window. And when it works well, a sleeper train can be one of the smartest ways to move around the country. You save daytime travel hours. You may save one hotel night. You avoid another airport. And honestly, waking up somewhere new feels way more memorable than another one-hour domestic flight. 😭🚆 But the experience depends A LOT on what you book. Vietnam Railways currently lists several sleeping categories, including 4-berth and 6-berth compartments, alongside other seating and sleeper types. Here are the six things I’d know before choosing one. 🛌 1. If your budget allows, choose the 4-berth soft sleeper This is the upgrade I’d make first. A 4-berth sleeper cabin gives you two lower and two upper bunks, while the 6-berth configuration fits three levels of beds on each side. Vietnam Railways currently distinguishes these as separate sleeper categories in its booking system. That extra space makes a noticeable difference overnight. You get: more headroom, fewer people in the cabin, less climbing around, and generally a calmer feeling. If you’re only traveling for a few hours during the day, I wouldn’t care as much. Some useful routes to look at include: Hanoi ↔ Lao Cai for travelers continuing toward Sapa. Vietnam Railways still lists the Hanoi–Lao Cai route and sleeper accommodation in its current system. Hanoi ↔ Dong Hoi for Phong Nha and Quang Binh. Ninh Binh ↔ Hue / Da Nang for travelers moving south through Central Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City ↔ Nha Trang can also work depending on the specific train time. Current north-south schedules show several services linking Saigon and Nha Trang. The key is checking the ACTUAL timetable. A route might sound perfect geographically but have a terrible departure or arrival time. A sleeper arriving at 4:30 AM is technically efficient… until you’re standing outside the station with your suitcase wondering why you thought this was a good idea. 😂 🌅 4. Do NOT sleep through Da Nang ↔ Hue This is one section I’d deliberately travel during daylight. The railway between Da Nang and Hue runs through the dramatic Hai Van Pass area, with mountains on one side and coastal scenery on the other. It’s one of those journeys where taking the train is part of the sightseeing. So if your itinerary includes both cities, don’t automatically choose an overnight schedule just because sleeper trains sound romantic. Save your sleeping hours for another section. Take this one awake. Find a window. Charge your phone. And enjoy the ride. 🌊🚆 For this route, the train is not simply transportation. It’s one of the attractions. 🚫 5. Hanoi → Ho Chi Minh City in one train? I wouldn’t Technically, you can travel a huge section of Vietnam by rail on the north-south line. Should a first-time traveler sit on one train from Hanoi all the way to Ho Chi Minh City? Personally? No. 😭 Current Vietnam Railways schedules show the north-south services stopping through major destinations including Hanoi, Dong Hoi, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Saigon. That’s exactly why I’d break the journey up. For example: Hanoi → Ninh Binh explore Ninh Binh → Hue / Da Nang overnight sleeper explore Central Vietnam then continue south later. That gives you the fun of train travel without turning the train itself into your entire vacation. If your only goal is reaching Ho Chi Minh City from Hanoi quickly, a domestic flight makes much more sense. If your goal is actually seeing Vietnam? Break the railway journey into sections. 🎒 6. Your overnight-train survival kit matters more than you think You don’t need to bring half your house. But a few small things make the journey MUCH better. Light sweater or hoodie Air-conditioned cabins can feel cold, especially overnight. Earplugs Trains move. Doors open. People wake up. Stations happen. Eye mask Useful if cabin lights or station lights bother you. Power bank Don’t assume every socket will be exactly where you want it or working perfectly. Water + small snacks Especially useful if your departure is late. Toilet paper / tissues + hand sanitizer You’ll understand eventually. 😂 Small bag for valuables Keep your passport, wallet, phone and important items close to you rather than buried inside your main luggage. Simple. 🚪 Should you book the whole cabin? If you’re traveling as a group of four, this is easy. Four people + four-berth compartment = basically your own little moving hotel room. For couples, some travelers also prefer buying additional berths when booking conditions allow, simply for more privacy. But check the specific train and booking rules before assuming you can reserve unused beds. For solo travelers, sharing a cabin is completely normal. You might end up with another tourist. A Vietnamese family. Business travelers. Or someone who climbs into bed immediately and says approximately zero words until morning. 😂 That unpredictability is part of train travel. 🚉 Hanoi → Lao Cai does NOT take you directly to Sapa This is worth highlighting because first-time visitors sometimes search for “train to Sapa.” The railway goes to Lao Cai, not directly into Sapa town. Vietnam Railways currently operates the Hanoi–Lao Cai route. From Lao Cai station, you still need road transport up into the mountains. So when comparing: overnight train vs sleeper bus vs limousine van include that final transfer. The train is more of an experience. Road transport can be more direct. Choose based on whether you prioritize comfort, travel style or convenience. 📱 Make sure the ticket details match your ID This sounds boring until it saves you a problem. Vietnam Railways’ current ticket-verification system states that passengers need identification information matching the details recorded on the electronic ticket in order to board. So check: your name, passport/ID information where required, departure station, arrival station, date, and train number. Especially if someone else books the ticket for you. Don’t wait until the station to discover your travel date is tomorrow. 😭 🍜 Bring snacks, but don’t expect luxury dining Depending on the service, you may find food or drinks available onboard or during stops. But I wouldn’t build my entire dinner plan around it. Eat before boarding if practical and bring something small for later. Vietnam has too much incredible food for your final meal of the day to be: “Whatever mystery snack was left in my backpack.” 😂 And please avoid bringing something intensely fragrant into a small four-person sleeping cabin. Some upgraded tourist carriages can feel more polished, but ordinary Vietnam Railways sleepers are still trains. You’ll hear movement. The carriage will shake. The bathroom is functional rather than spa-like. The bedding experience can vary by train and carriage. You might sleep amazingly. You might wake up every time the train slows down. Go in expecting an experience + transportation, not five-star accommodation. That mindset makes it much more enjoyable. 🌅 But waking up on the train is part of the magic This is why I’d still recommend trying it at least once. There’s something special about waking up, pulling back the curtain or looking through the window and realizing the scenery has completely changed. Rice fields. Small stations. Villages starting their morning. Mountains appearing in the distance. Then someone walks past selling coffee or breakfast and suddenly you remember: You’re crossing Vietnam by train. 🇻🇳🚆 That is a travel memory a one-hour flight rarely gives you. 💡 My ideal sleeper-train strategy If I were planning a first Vietnam trip, I wouldn’t use trains for every journey. I’d mix them strategically. Short distance: car, bus or train depending on convenience. Good overnight section: sleeper train. Da Nang ↔ Hue: daytime train for the scenery. Huge north-to-south jump: fly. That gives you the best part of Vietnam’s railway experience without losing entire days unnecessarily. 🇻🇳 The quick guide to remember Best cabin for most travelers: 4-berth soft sleeper 🛌 Most convenient bed: lower berth ⬇️ Best use: overnight journeys long enough for a real sleep 🚆 One route to keep awake for: Da Nang ↔ Hue 🌊 One journey I’d split: Hanoi ↔ Ho Chi Minh City ✈️🚆 Pack: earplugs, eye mask, warm layer, power bank, water and valuables close to you 🎒 And perhaps most importantly: Don’t choose a sleeper train only because it saves a hotel night. 🏔️ Cloud-Hunting Peaks, Rice Terraces, Jungle Trails & Giant Caves: Vietnam on Foot Hits Different Vietnam is famous for street food, motorbike trips, beaches and chaotic cities, but some of the country’s most unforgettable landscapes are the ones you have to walk for. Far beyond the usual city itinerary, Vietnam has misty mountain ridges above the clouds, terraced valleys carved into hillsides, tropical rainforest, dry coastal mountains and cave systems so enormous they barely look real. Some of these are genuine multi-day expeditions. Others are shorter climbs or trekking areas that can fit into a normal trip. So before throwing all 15 into one itinerary 😭, choose based on your fitness level, the season and how adventurous you actually want the trip to be. Here are 15 places worth saving for a future Vietnam hiking adventure. 🏔️ 1. Fansipan, Sapa At 3,143 meters, Fansipan is Vietnam’s highest mountain and the highest peak in the Indochinese Peninsula. Most visitors now reach the upper mountain using the cable-car system, but trekking Fansipan is still possible for travelers who want the mountain experience rather than simply the summit photo. The climb takes you through forests, steep mountain terrain and changing vegetation before reaching the top of the Hoang Lien Son range. Weather is the wildcard. You might reach the summit and see mountains stretching into the distance. Or you might see approximately three meters of cloud. 😭☁️ Either way, the journey is the point. Best for: mountain trekking, challenging climbs and travelers wanting a serious Sapa adventure. ☁️ 2. Ta Xua, Son La If your hiking dream involves standing above a sea of clouds, save Ta Xua. This mountainous region has become famous for dramatic ridgelines and cloud-hunting conditions, especially during cooler periods. The scenery can feel almost unreal when low clouds settle into the valleys and only the mountain peaks remain visible. But don’t plan the entire trip around one viral cloud photo. Cloud inversions depend on temperature, humidity and weather. On the right morning? Magic. On the wrong morning? Congratulations, you went hiking. 😂 The famous “dinosaur backbone” ridge is another reason adventure travelers come here, although sections can be narrow and exposed. Best for: cloud hunting, ridgelines and photographers who don’t mind earning the view. 🏍️ 3. Ha Giang Ha Giang is better known for the legendary Ha Giang Loop, but don’t assume the province is only meant to be seen from a motorbike. Some of the best experiences happen after you get off the road. Walking routes around ethnic minority villages, valleys and mountain passes let you experience the landscape at a completely different pace. Areas around Dong Van, Meo Vac and Du Gia can give you limestone mountains, deep valleys, terraced farmland and small settlements tucked into seemingly impossible terrain. A local guide can make shorter village treks much more meaningful because the region is culturally diverse and many trails are not obvious to first-time visitors. Best for: combining a road trip with village walks and mountain trekking. 🌿 4. Ba Be National Park Ba Be feels like northern Vietnam on quiet mode. The national park combines limestone mountains, forests, caves, rivers and Ba Be Lake, surrounded by Tay villages. This is the kind of place where the hiking is less about conquering one famous summit and more about moving through a whole landscape. Walk through forest trails. Pass local villages. Take a boat across the lake. Explore caves. Then wake up the next morning somewhere that feels very far from Hanoi. If you prefer trekking without the crowds found at more famous mountain destinations, Ba Be is worth researching. Best for: nature, homestays, forests and slower multi-activity adventures. 💦 5. Ban Gioc & Cao Bang Ban Gioc Waterfall itself is more of a spectacular natural sight than a major standalone hiking route, but the wider Cao Bang region is what makes this area so exciting for outdoor travelers. Karst mountains rise between rice fields, rural roads run through tiny villages and viewpoints are scattered across the province. Combine Ban Gioc with countryside walks, nearby caves and the landscapes around the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark for a much richer trip. The waterfall is the headline. The surrounding countryside is the reason I wouldn’t rush back to Hanoi immediately afterward. Best for: easy walks, dramatic karst scenery and travelers who want to combine nature with a northern road trip. 🌾 6. Pu Luong Nature Reserve If rice terraces are your weakness, Pu Luong deserves a save. The reserve is filled with terraced hillsides, forests, traditional villages and narrow paths connecting rural communities. Compared with Sapa, parts of Pu Luong can feel much quieter. A typical trekking day might involve walking down through rice fields, crossing small streams, passing water wheels and eventually arriving at a village homestay. The landscape also changes dramatically with the agricultural season. Fresh green terraces and golden harvest fields are not available all year, so check current crop conditions if that particular scenery matters to you. Best for: rice terraces, village trekking and first-time hikers looking for something scenic without a major summit climb. ⛰️ 7. Hang Mua, Ninh Binh Let’s be clear: Hang Mua is not a long wilderness trek. It is a relatively short but steep climb involving hundreds of stone steps. And somehow your legs will still remember it. 😂 The reward is one of Ninh Binh’s most famous panoramas, looking across the Tam Coc area with rice fields, rivers and limestone karsts below. Go earlier or later in the day if possible because the climb can feel brutal under strong midday heat. The upper ridges can also be exposed, so use extra caution if the stone is wet or conditions are windy. Best for: travelers who want a big viewpoint without committing to a full-day hike. 🌳 8. Bach Ma National Park Between Hue and Da Nang sits one of central Vietnam’s best hiking areas. Bach Ma National Park combines tropical forest, waterfalls, mountain viewpoints and trails that feel worlds away from the nearby coastal cities. One of the most popular experiences involves trekking through the forest toward the Five Lakes and Do Quyen Waterfall area. You can also reach viewpoints higher in the park where, on a clear day, the landscape opens toward lagoons, mountains and the coast. Rain changes everything here. Trails become slippery and visibility can disappear quickly, so good shoes matter more than your aesthetic hiking outfit. 😭 Best for: rainforest, waterfalls and anyone visiting Hue or Da Nang who wants an outdoor day. 🦇 9. Son Doong, Quang Binh Then there’s the hike that sits in a completely different category. Son Doong is widely recognized as the world’s largest natural cave by volume and exploring it is not a normal sightseeing excursion. This is a demanding, highly controlled multi-day expedition through jungle, rivers, enormous cave passages and underground camps. Inside, the scale becomes difficult to understand from photographs. Some sections contain enormous chambers, underground formations and collapsed areas where sunlight enters and supports vegetation. This is bucket-list trekking in the literal sense. It requires preparation, fitness and an authorized expedition rather than independent exploration. For most travelers visiting Phong Nha, there are also many easier cave and jungle adventures available that don’t require committing to Son Doong. Best for: experienced adventure travelers looking for a genuine expedition. 🌉 10. Ba Na Hills, Da Nang Ba Na Hills belongs on this list with an important clarification: It’s better described as a mountain walking and sightseeing destination than a traditional wilderness hike. You reach the complex by cable car, then spend the day walking between the famous Golden Bridge, gardens, viewpoints, French Village and other attractions. The mountain setting can still involve a LOT of walking. And because Ba Na sits at elevation, the weather can shift quickly from sunshine to fog. For travelers who like mountain scenery but don’t want a demanding trek, it’s an easy way to add a highland experience to a Da Nang itinerary. Best for: casual walkers, families and anyone who wants mountain views without a major trek. 🏔️ 11. Ngoc Linh For something much more remote, look toward the Ngoc Linh mountain range in central Vietnam. This rugged region stretches around the Kon Tum and Quang Nam area and includes some of the highest terrain in central Vietnam. This is not the kind of place where you casually arrive in sandals after seeing one Reel. Routes can be remote, conditions can be challenging and access arrangements may require local coordination depending on the area. That remoteness is also exactly what makes Ngoc Linh fascinating. Dense forest. High mountains. Few crowds. A side of Vietnam most visitors never see. Best for: experienced trekkers, remote landscapes and travelers comfortable with logistical planning. 🌄 12. Ta Nang – Phan Dung This is one of southern Vietnam’s most talked-about trekking routes. The classic Ta Nang – Phan Dung journey crosses terrain between the Central Highlands and the lower landscapes toward Binh Thuan. Expect rolling hills, forests, grasslands and long stretches where the scenery opens dramatically around you. It’s often done as an overnight or multi-day trek rather than a quick morning hike. And this is another route where the season matters. Dry conditions can mean exposed heat and limited water. Wet conditions can make slopes dangerously slippery. So don’t choose your date based only on when the hills look prettiest on Instagram. Best for: camping, multi-day trekking and travelers looking for a challenge closer to southern Vietnam. 🌊 13. Nui Chua National Park Nui Chua is one of the most unusual landscapes on this list. Instead of wet tropical jungle, parts of the national park are famously dry, rocky and almost semi-arid. Then you look in another direction and see the sea. That combination of mountains and coastline makes trekking here feel completely different from northern Vietnam. The wider Nui Chua landscape is also recognized within the Nui Chua UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, reflecting the area’s unusual terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Expect heat, exposed terrain and fewer shady sections on some routes. Bring plenty of water and do not underestimate the sun. Best for: coastal trekking, unusual ecosystems and travelers who want something different from rice terraces. 🌲 14. Lang Biang, Da Lat Da Lat is known for cafés, flowers and cool weather, but the surrounding highlands are also excellent for hiking. Lang Biang is one of the most recognizable mountain areas near the city. The landscape includes pine forests, highland vegetation and viewpoints overlooking the wider Da Lat region. Different routes and experiences exist around Lang Biang, so research the actual trail you want rather than assuming every visit is the same. The cooler climate makes hiking here feel very different from trekking in tropical coastal areas. And afterward? You’re back in Da Lat. Which means hot coffee and an enormous meal are completely justified. 😂☕ Best for: moderate mountain hikes, pine forests and travelers already exploring Da Lat. ⛰️ 15. Phu Sa Phin For hikers who keep saying: “I want somewhere less crowded.” Here you go. 😭 Phu Sa Phin, in Vietnam’s northwest, belongs to the more adventurous side of the country’s mountain trekking scene. #mytravelwrap These are some of the photos I took during a sunny afternoon exploring Kien Trung Palace in Hue. The warm sunlight made the old royal architecture look even more beautiful and timeless. Kien Trung Palace was built in 1921 during the reign of Emperor Khai Dinh and was later used by Emperor Bao Dai. It was once one of the important buildings inside the Forbidden City of Hue. The palace was badly damaged during the war and was recently restored to bring back its former beauty. Walking around here in the afternoon, I could really feel the quiet atmosphere and the elegance of Vietnam’s royal past.

During my trip to Hue, Kien Trung Palace was one of the places that impressed me the most. Located inside the Imperial City, the palace stands out with its beautiful yellow walls, traditional royal details and a unique blend of Vietnamese and European architecture. I especially loved the combination of the golden building, green trees and open courtyard. It feels very elegant and makes a great backdrop for photos. 📸 My photo tips: · Go early in the morning or around 3:30–5:00 PM for softer light. · Try a low-angle shot to make the palace look more impressive. · Stand further away and include the whole building in the frame. · White, pastel or traditional Vietnamese outfits look great against the yellow walls. · If you want photos without too many people, come early and be patient for a quiet moment. 📍 Location: Imperial City, Hue ⏰ Time needed: Around 30–60 minutes If you’re visiting Hue, don’t just walk past Kien Trung Palace. The salt balances the sweetness and bitterness, creating something closer to salted caramel. It originated in Huế, so trying it there makes the experience even better. 📍 BUCKET LIST: Cà Phê Muối, Huế One of the places most closely associated with the original Huế-style salt coffee. Our rating: 9/10 🥉 3. Cà phê cốt dừa — Coconut Coffee Coffee or dessert? Probably both. Strong Vietnamese coffee is combined with coconut milk or coconut cream and often blended with ice into an almost frozen texture. Sweet, tropical and perfect for Vietnamese heat. 📍 BUCKET LIST: Cộng Cà Phê Cộng has locations around Vietnam and its coconut coffee has become one of those drinks almost every first-time visitor should try. Very easy to add to your itinerary in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang. Our rating: 8.5/10 🥥 4. Cà phê sữa chua — Yogurt Coffee Probably the strangest combination on this list after egg coffee. Coffee + yogurt + ice. But somehow it works. The yogurt adds freshness and acidity, while the coffee brings bitterness. It’s lighter than egg coffee and feels somewhere between a drink, dessert and breakfast. 📍 BUCKET LIST: Café Duy Trí, Hanoi A classic old-school Hanoi café experience and a great place to look for traditional Vietnamese coffee combinations beyond the drinks tourists usually order. Strong coffee traditionally brewed through a metal phin filter, mixed with condensed milk and poured over ice. Vietnamese coffee often uses robusta beans, so the flavor can be much stronger, darker and more intense than many travelers expect. And honestly, you don’t necessarily need a fancy café for this one. Some of our favorite coffee moments were simply sitting in small local cafés and watching everyday Vietnamese life around us. 📍 BUCKET LIST: Cheo Leo Café, Ho Chi Minh City An old-school Saigon coffee stop that feels completely different from the modern specialty cafés around the city. #slowtraveling After hours of gates, palaces, temples and royal history inside the Imperial City of Huế, there comes a point when you simply don’t want to “see” anything else. And that is exactly when you should stop. Because hidden among the monumental architecture of the Citadel are the Nguyễn Dynasty’s imperial gardens — places that were created not for rushing through, but for resting, reading, writing poetry and simply looking at beautiful things. 🌿 One of the most important is Thiệu Phương Garden (Thiệu Phương Viên), a royal garden originally created in 1828 under Emperor Minh Mạng. Another is Cơ Hạ Garden (Cơ Hạ Viên), established in 1837, which was used as a place where emperors and princes could relax, read and study. And this might actually be one of my favorite examples of slow traveling in Vietnam. You’ve already crossed huge courtyards. You’ve photographed the gates. You’ve walked through the throne halls. You’ve read dates, dynasties and names of emperors. Now forget the checklist for a moment. Find one of the covered wooden corridors, sit down and start looking at the garden properly. Because almost nothing here is random. 🌳 First, look at the miniature trees. You’ll see carefully trained ornamental trees that we would casually call bonsai. In Vietnam, however, the broader tradition of shaping miniature trees and landscapes has its own long history, and the important thing is not simply how small a tree is. Look at its silhouette. Some have one strong upright trunk. Some bend dramatically as if shaped by decades of wind. Others divide into several trunks or create wide horizontal layers of foliage. You may notice forms similar to the classic bonsai styles: 🌿 Formal upright — a straight, strong trunk narrowing toward the top. 🌿 Informal upright — the trunk curves naturally while still growing upward. 🌿 Slanting — the whole tree appears to lean to one side, almost as if resisting wind. 🌿 Cascade / semi-cascade — branches descend toward or below the level of the pot. 🌿 Multi-trunk — several trunks create the impression of a miniature grove. 🌿 Layered or cloud-pruned forms — foliage is shaped into distinct horizontal masses. These are especially beautiful against the yellow palace walls and tiled roofs. But don’t only look at the leaves. Look at the trunk and exposed roots. A good old miniature tree is supposed to create the illusion of age and endurance. Thick trunks, irregular bark, asymmetry and roots gripping the soil can make a relatively small plant feel like an ancient tree standing on a mountain. And then look at the pot. Some of the imperial trees are displayed in large ceramic containers, sometimes decorated with traditional motifs such as dragons. The container, pedestal, tree and architecture behind it become part of one composition. 🪨 Then notice the rocks. This is another detail many visitors walk straight past. Traditional royal gardens were not simply collections of flowers. Rocks could evoke mountains and entire landscapes in miniature. Combined with a small tree, water and carefully selected viewing angle, a tiny section of garden can suggest a much larger natural world. 💧 Look for water. Ponds and water elements soften the architecture, reflect roofs and trees and add movement without making the garden feel busy. 🏯 Then look at the architecture framing nature. One of the fascinating features of Thiệu Phương Garden is its unusual system of covered corridors radiating through the garden. Historical descriptions even mention its distinctive cross-like, meandering corridor arrangement. That means the corridor is not just a way to get from A to B. It is a viewing device. Walk a few meters. Stop. The same tree suddenly appears between two columns. Move again. Now the rock, roof and bonsai form a completely different composition. This is why these gardens make so much more sense when you stop treating them as another attraction to “finish.” Their beauty reveals itself slowly. And historically, that was part of the point. Royal gardens in Huế were spaces where the imperial family could retreat from official ceremonies and court life. Cơ Hạ Garden, for example, was associated with relaxation, reading and study, while other palace gardens provided places for quiet enjoyment of scenery. So here is my recommendation: When you visit the Imperial City, don’t schedule every minute. Leave 20–30 minutes with absolutely no goal. Don’t search for the next “must-see.” Don’t open the map. Sit under one of the corridors. Choose one bonsai. Look at its trunk, roots, branches and shape. Notice how it is positioned against the pavilion behind it. Listen to the garden. And suddenly the Imperial City stops feeling like a huge historical museum you are trying to conquer. It starts feeling like what parts of it were originally designed to be: a place to slow down and contemplate beauty. Hue's imperial tombs are much more than burial places. Each one was designed during a different period of the Nguyen Dynasty, and the architecture often reflects the personality and tastes of the emperor. If you're exploring Hue, these are five tombs I recommend visiting: Minh Mang Tomb - probably the most harmonious of the five. Temples, gates, lakes and pavilions are arranged symmetrically among green hills and pine trees. It's especially beautiful if you enjoy traditional Vietnamese architecture. Tu Duc Tomb - my choice for atmosphere. The complex feels more like a peaceful imperial retreat, with a lake, small islands, pavilions and lots of greenery. Tu Duc actually used the grounds during his lifetime. Khai Dinh Tomb - completely different from the others. It's smaller, darker and much more dramatic, combining Vietnamese and European influences. The richly decorated interior of Thien Dinh Palace is the highlight. Dong Khanh Tomb - less visited but definitely worth seeing. It combines traditional Nguyen architecture with influences that appeared during the French colonial period. It's also a good choice if you want to escape the biggest tourist crowds. Thieu Tri Tomb - the quietest experience of the five. The complex has a more open layout and feels much less touristy than Minh Mang, Tu Duc or Khai Dinh. Come here if you want to explore Hue's imperial history without crowds. You don't need to visit every imperial tomb in Hue, but seeing several makes the differences between them much more interesting. Hue is famous for imperial tombs, temples and historical architecture, but AEON MALL Huế shows a completely different side of the city. Opened in 2024, it was the first AEON Mall in Central Vietnam and brought a huge modern shopping and entertainment complex to Hue. The mall has around 140 stores across roughly 51,000 m² of leasable space, so there is plenty to explore. You can shop for international and Vietnamese brands, visit the AEON supermarket, stop for coffee or spend time exploring the food options. There is also entertainment, including a cinema and activities for families. After several days of temples and historical sights, I actually enjoyed having somewhere completely modern to explore. If you want to discover places that many visitors skip, these five hidden gems are worth adding to your itinerary. 1. Ho Quyen Arena One of the most unusual historical sites in Hue. Built in the 19th century, this imperial arena was used for staged fights between elephants and tigers, watched by the emperor and royal court. The circular stone structure still survives today and feels completely different from Hue's palaces and temples. 2. Bunkers Hill A quiet hill covered with old military bunkers and surrounded by beautiful scenery. The combination of history, forest, and panoramic views makes it an interesting stop away from the usual tourist route. 3. Mausoleum of Emperor Dong Khanh Often overlooked in favor of Hue's more famous imperial tombs, Dong Khanh's mausoleum is smaller but beautifully decorated.
