Nara is a place full of history and cute animals. It boasts world-class cultural heritage sites and a group of incredibly adorable deer, making it a must-visit destination in Kansai! In this series, I'll share my journey through Nara, from ancient temples to bustling shopping streets, in two parts. 📍Horyu-ji Temple - The World's Oldest Wooden Building Our first stop in Nara is, of course, steeped in history! Horyu-ji Temple is the world's oldest wooden building, and the entire temple complex is vast. Walking through it, you can truly feel the traces of a thousand years of history. The buildings are incredibly well-preserved, and every detail is awe-inspiring. History enthusiasts will absolutely love this place! 📍Nara Park - Joyful Times with the Deer Next, we head to Nara's most iconic spot - Nara Park! The deer here are simply amazing and are the soul of Nara! However, these deer have various personalities. Some are extremely friendly and will rush over if they see you have deer crackers, while others are very aloof and won't pay you any attention, even acting a bit haughty 😃. You can buy deer crackers in the park, but I strongly recommend not feeding them all at once! We'll be visiting Todai-ji Temple next, where there are also many deer, so save some crackers to avoid any regrets. A Sudden Surprise - Nara's Festival! I thought today would be just an ordinary day in Nara, but I was lucky enough to stumble upon a festival! As I walked down the street, I heard lively sounds from afar. Moving closer, I saw a large crowd gathered, with people dancing in traditional Japanese clothing and others waving large flags. The whole street instantly came alive. It's a basic travel destination, but I think many people say it's their second visit. When I talk to people at hostels, many of them say the same thing. The first time was on a school trip. Not many tourists go there so that you can enjoy the peaceful time. The whole ticket is ¥1500 for 3 parts visit, strongly recommended. You can see the oldest building in the west of the temple, including the main hall for Buddha and the 5 storey tower. Better sit down and feel the peaceful. This is a record of my visit to Horyu-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site and the world's oldest existing wooden building. 📿 Special viewings are planned for October-November 2026, so please consider it for your autumn outings and trips! · · 🪷Special Viewings🪷 Held annually in spring (April 11th - May 18th) and autumn (October 22nd - November 22nd). This is a rare opportunity to see the Yumedono Kannon statue, a hidden Buddha said to be a life-size representation of Prince Shotoku! · The Yumedono Kannon statue was known as an absolutely secret Buddha (a Buddha whose form no one was allowed to see) until the Meiji era. Although it is said to be life-size of Prince Shotoku, its height is approximately 179cm, which is almost the same as the average height of the Samurai Japan baseball team or the Samurai Blue soccer team…! He seems a bit too tall for someone from the Asuka period, but perhaps he had a very strong aura about him (lol). · · 🪷About the Temple Buildings🪷 · Western Precinct This is the world's oldest existing wooden building complex, and you can actually touch buildings from the Asuka period! The five-story pagoda is exactly as you'd imagine! The Buddha statues and decorations inside are magnificent, so be sure to take a look 👀 If you look closely at the pillars of the main hall, you'll see dragons wrapped around them, adding a playful touch 🐉 (These dragons were apparently added during restoration in the Edo period.) Also, be sure to pay attention to the murals in the main hall, which have a sad history of being partially destroyed in a fire in 1949. · ○Great Treasure Hall This museum houses a variety of treasures, but the highlight is undoubtedly the Kudara Kannon statue! Enjoy the imposing presence and gentle smile of this statue, approximately 209.4 cm tall. ☺️ · ○Yumedono Hall According to one theory, this elegant octagonal building is said to have been the model for Azuchi Castle! It's a short walk from the Western Precinct, so please allow ample time for your visit. 🚶 · · 🪷Access🪷 Prince Shotoku is said to have commuted (?) from Ikaruga, where Horyuji Temple is located, to Asuka on horseback, but for us modern people, train + bus is recommended! The nearest station is JR Horyuji Station, but it's a bit far to walk, so please use the local bus. 🚍️ There are also buses from Kintetsu Tsutsui Station! · The temple grounds are much larger than you might imagine! Most of the path is paved with cobblestones and other paved roads (though there are some gravel sections), so comfortable walking shoes are recommended 👟 · · 🪷Limited-Time Event🪷 In October 2023, a special light-up event and a collaboration with the creative company NAKED.INC. were held. At Himeji Station, I bought a round-trip bus and cable car pass. We drove 40 minutes to the foot of the mountain and took the cable car up. Two Japanese people stopped us to collect money: 600 to enter the temple on foot, 1,000 to enter by vehicle. We chose to walk. 1. First encountered the Bell of Compassion Established in October, Heisei 4 (1992). It was conceived and designed in the early Kamakura period. The bell is often rung as a signal for major Buddhist services, and its sound is meant to pray for world peace and the establishment of a pure Buddhist land. 2. Mountain gate After walking for 20 minutes, we reached the mountain gate, which is the Niomon Gate. It was rebuilt in the early Edo period in 1617 and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture. It is a three-bay, single-entrance, eight-legged gate with a hip-and-gable roof, a classic mountain gate style of ancient Japanese Tendai Buddhist temples, with similar structures only seen in top ancient temples like Todai-ji and Horyu-ji. It serves as a boundary gate separating the secular world from the sacred realm of the temple; only after passing through this gate does one officially enter the temple grounds. This mountain gate is a famous filming location: "The Last Samurai," "Rurouni Kenshin," and "Gunshi Kanbei" all filmed scenes of ancient temples in the mountains here. The wooden mountain gate combined with the deep mountain cedar forest creates a strong Japanese ancient aesthetic. 3. Jyumyoin Temple After a few more minutes of walking, a small courtyard, somewhat resembling a chief priest's residence, suddenly appeared. I read the introduction. Jyumyoin Temple was commissioned by Daimyo Akamatsu Mitsusuke (1381–1441) to commemorate his daughter, who died prematurely at the age of 16. The main deity of Jyumyoin Temple is a compassionate statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The statue is quite large and is believed to have been made to the life-size of Mitsusuke's daughter. The story of Mitsusuke's daughter's death illustrates the turbulent times of medieval Japanese history. In the first half of the 15th century, the region was ruled by the autocratic Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori (1397–1441). Fearing betrayal, Yoshinori attempted to assassinate his close samurai and trusted retainers, including Akamatsu Mitsusuke, who controlled several domains at the time. Mitsusuke's daughter, while residing at the Shogun's mansion, learned of the plot and warned her father to be vigilant. However, when Yoshinori learned of Mitsusuke's daughter's actions, he ordered her death. Thanks to his daughter's tragic sacrifice, Mitsusuke was able to preemptively act. In the summer of 1441, he assassinated the tyrant Yoshinori during a Noh performance in Kyoto.

Even for someone like me who isn't a huge history buff, the hour flew by in a flash! 🌟 Top Pick ② Modern, Comfortable Japanese-Style Rooms My room this time was a Japanese-Western style room with tatami flooring. It felt so nice to walk around barefoot, and the bathroom area was spacious and spotlessly clean ✨ I also loved the little thoughtful touches, like the cute baskets provided for heading to the large public bath. 🌟 Top Pick ③ Exclusive "Horyuji Rediscovery Tour" for Guests This was hands down the highlight of my trip! I joined the guest-only guided tour of Horyuji. While strolling past the Nandaimon Gate, the Five-Story Pagoda, and the Kondo (Main Hall), we got to hear so many captivating stories about the architecture and history. The Five-Story Pagoda was especially breathtaking. Seeing the edges of the roofs align perfectly straight is a true masterpiece, and having an expert explain it gave me a much deeper appreciation of its true value. It was just one amazing discovery after another—things you'd completely miss if you were just wandering around on your own ✨ 🌟 Cozy & Relaxing Public Bath The large public bath isn't huge, but it's incredibly clean. When I went, I basically had the whole place to myself, so I was really able to kick back and soak my fatigue away ♨️ 📍 Final Thoughts Waqoo Horyuji isn't just a place to sleep; it's an inn designed to help you experience Horyuji on a much deeper level. I highly recommend it not just to history lovers, but also to people like me who aren't history experts. Honestly, I hadn't been to Horyuji since my elementary school field trip, but coming back as an adult was a totally different and rewarding experience ✨ If you're planning a trip to Horyuji, definitely stay here and join the "Rediscovery Tour"! 😊

Upon arriving at Horyu-ji Temple: 👉 Spacious grounds 👉 Wooden architecture 👉 Serene atmosphere The surroundings were incredibly peaceful. Even with people around, it was surprisingly quiet. To be honest, 👉 I thought to myself, "The vibe here is just different..." What stood out the most were the Five-Story Pagoda and the Main Hall (Kondo). Seeing them up close, the color and shape of the wood were so beautiful. 👉 "To think this has been standing for over 1,300 years..." I found myself just gazing up at it for a while. He is also known as one of the "Seven Spears of Shizugatake" who fought in the Battle of Shizugatake (1583). In 1601 (Keicho 6), the year after the Battle of Sekigahara, despite being a Toyotomi clan elder, Katsumoto was granted over 24,000 koku of land in Heguri County, Yamato Province, and established a camp in Tatsuta and established the Tatsuta Domain. 🏯 After Katsumoto's death, the domain continued until the fourth lord, Tametsugu, but all died young, and the domain was abolished in 1655 (Meireki 1).
