The grasslands and natural areas are exactly what people come to Ili to see. I think protecting them is more important than getting one extra photo.

If I enter a religious or culturally important place, I would rather take a moment to see what local people are doing before taking out my camera or behaving too casually. Things that feel normal in a tourist attraction may not be appropriate in a religious or private space. For me, the basic rule is simple: If I am unsure, I watch first and ask later. Don't treat local hospitality as entertainment One thing I noticed about travelling in places like Ili is that local people can be very welcoming. Sometimes people may invite you to eat, talk, take photos, or experience something local. That friendliness can be a very beautiful part of travelling. But I also think it is important not to treat local culture like a performance arranged for tourists. People are not there simply to make your trip more interesting. I try to remember that behind the food, clothes, music, and traditions are real people and real lives. That mindset changes the way I travel.

#localrules Ili has so much open land that it is easy to look at a grassland, a field, or a beautiful road and think: “I can just walk over there.” But not every piece of land is public. Some areas may be farmland, private land, grazing land, or land belonging to local families. A beautiful view does not automatically mean it is okay to walk into it just for a photo. I had to remind myself that the scenery may look open, but someone may actually depend on that land for their daily life. Sometimes the best thing to do is simply admire the view from the road instead of trying to get closer. Because Ili has such a strong local culture and people often wear traditional clothing, it can be tempting to take photos immediately. But a person is not a decoration for your travel album. If I want to photograph someone clearly, I think it is much better to ask first. Even if there is a language barrier, a simple gesture and a polite smile can make a big difference. I personally feel that a photo becomes much more meaningful when the person in it actually agrees to be there.

#touristtrap Some places in Ili sell a very complete travel experience: beautiful scenery, special photo spots, horse riding, local-style activities, and carefully prepared backgrounds. At first, it can feel exciting. But after a while, I sometimes wondered whether I was experiencing Ili itself or a version of Ili designed specifically for tourists. That was probably the most uncomfortable feeling for me. I didn't want everything to be perfect. I wanted to see something slightly messy, quiet, unexpected, and real. Sometimes the moment I enjoyed most was not at the most famous attraction. It was during the journey between places—seeing a small village, stopping beside the road, watching the light change on the mountains, or simply sitting quietly without having to take a photo. Those moments felt much more personal to me.

#touristtrap Ili is often presented as a place of endless flowers and colourful fields. Because of that, I think many travellers arrive with a very specific image in their heads. But nature does not follow social media schedules. The flowers may not be at their best when you arrive. The weather may be cloudy. A famous field may look completely different from the photos. Sometimes the timing is simply wrong. This can be disappointing if you travel all the way there expecting a perfect “flower sea”. For me, this is one of the biggest tourist traps in Ili—not necessarily because anyone is deliberately deceiving tourists, but because online photos make the experience look permanently perfect. The reality is much more unpredictable. And strangely, I think that is something I should have appreciated more.

#touristtrap When I imagined Ili’s grasslands, I imagined freedom. I imagined walking wherever I wanted, sitting quietly in the grass, and feeling completely disconnected from everything. But some popular grassland attractions can feel much more organised than I expected. There are designated routes, sightseeing transport, specific photo areas, and crowds moving in the same direction. Of course, I understand why this is necessary. These places are popular, and thousands of people visit them. But emotionally, I sometimes felt a strange contrast. The landscape looked wild and endless, but my experience of it sometimes felt quite controlled. I would look at the huge mountains and open grasslands and think: “There must be so much space here. Why do I still feel like I am following the crowd?” That feeling was unexpected for me.
