Amanohashidate & Ine Funaya – Japan’s Most Beautiful Coastal Drive You Need to Experience 📌 Quick Tips ✔️ Amanohashidate is worth more than just a photo stop. Walk or rent a bike along the famous pine-covered sandbar if you have time. ✔️ Don’t miss the torii gate by the beach—it’s one of the prettiest photo spots in the area. ✔️ Ine Funaya is best enjoyed slowly. Grab a drink at a waterfront café and take in the peaceful fishing village views. ✔️ This route is much easier by car, making it one of the best scenic drives in the Kyoto area. ⸻ I visited Amanohashidate and Ine Funaya, and it turned out to be one of my favorite day trips from Kyoto. On the way to Ine, we stopped at Amanohashidate. The long pine-covered sandbar stretching across the bay is even more beautiful in person. It’s perfect for a relaxing walk, and there are plenty of spots where you can simply sit and enjoy the ocean breeze. One of my favorite places was the small torii gate by the water. It felt peaceful, and it made for some really beautiful photos with the sea in the background. After that, we continued to Ine Funaya, often called the “Venice of Japan.” The traditional wooden boathouses lined up along the calm bay create such a unique atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else in Japan. One of the best ways to enjoy Ine is simply slowing down. We stopped at a waterfront café and spent some time looking out over the quiet harbor. Every direction felt like a postcard. We also visited Tugboat Coffee while walking around the village. There isn’t really indoor seating, but their latte and ice cream were both surprisingly good. It’s a nice little stop if you need a quick break while exploring. If you have extra time, I’d also recommend taking the sightseeing boat. Seeing the Funaya from the water gives you a completely different perspective, and it’s easy to understand why this place has become one of Kyoto’s hidden gems. I visited two magical and stunning scenic spots that somehow felt nostalgic, making me feel as though I had wandered straight into a Studio Ghibli film! ✨ Highlight ①: The Living Maritime Heritage of "Ine no Funaya" First, I visited "Ine no Funaya" (Ine Boathouses), designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Right on the water's edge, these uniquely structured buildings—with boat garages on the first floor and residential spaces on the second—line up along the bay. The sea peeking through the boathouses is a crystal-clear emerald green! My heart was gently filled by the nostalgic scenery and the slow passage of time. During my stroll, I stopped by "INE CAFE," located right next to the sea. Enjoying a rich gateau chocolat and freshly brewed coffee while gazing at the calm ocean spreading across the window was pure bliss. ✨ Highlight ②: The Sunset Sanctuary "Yuhigaura Coast" Driving from Ine Town, I made my way to "Yuhigaura Coast" in Kyotango City. Selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Sunsets," this beach is exceptionally breathtaking at dusk. On the wide, fine-sand beach sits the large wooden beach swing "Yurari," which is super popular on social media. Just swinging while feeling the ocean breeze makes you feel like the main character in a movie. Then, the long-awaited sunset arrived. The sky gradually turned deep red toward the horizon, and watching the sun slowly sink into the sea was an overwhelmingly beautiful sight that left me speechless. Even the lingering magic hour after sunset, where deep blue and orange blended together, made every single second feel like a treasure. Both spots share a gentle charm reminiscent of Japan's original landscapes, perfectly combined with the mesmerizing beauty of the sea. They overflow with a mysterious appeal that makes you feel "nostalgic" even if it's your first time visiting. If you're lucky, you can park in their lot (free). If you haven't given traveling to Japan in the summer a chance yet, you totally should! It's incredibly charming, and locals actually look forward to the summer season a lot. Summer in Japan has its pros and cons. First off, you should know: · Japan is very eco-conscious, so they rarely use air conditioning, or they keep it on very low. · The upside is that there are tons of activities and festivals, and we won't run into rain during the summer. · I highly recommend taking a trip to ✈️ Osaka, ⛩️ Kyoto, and 🌊 Ine. Ine is so charming and does an amazing job of preserving its traditional culture. If you want to stay overnight there: 🚩 You absolutely must book in advance! 🚩 Make sure to reserve your dinner in advance too, or you might end up with nothing to eat! · Ine is the only coastline that has never been hit by a tsunami.* 😎 Dress code: Light and comfortable summer style. · Recommended stay: waterfront inn * · Recommended boat tour: A private boat costs 1,000 yen per person. It's called Reine. You can board at the pier on your right when facing the tourist information center. It is quite far from Kyoto Station, so if you plan to visit, I recommend renting a car. By the way, if you're traveling from Kyoto, you will pass through Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most scenic spots, so it might be worth stopping by there as well! Once you arrive at Ine's Funaya, I hope you take the time to enjoy the townscape. You can view the sea from every street. You can also enjoy this stunning view from cafes, and the Kyoto cuisine is absolutely delicious. I highly recommend visiting!

"Boat houses" are highly functional traditional buildings, mainly consisting of two floors: First Floor: A garage for boats. The floor extends directly into the sea, allowing fishermen to easily move their small boats inside to moor, repair fishing nets, or use as a processing area for their catch. Second Floor: Living space. Originally used as storage rooms or guest rooms, they are now often converted into bedrooms for residents or unique guesthouse rooms. This design is adapted to the unique geographical environment of Ine Bay, with its small tidal range and calm waves, and has been designated an "Important Preservation Area for Groups of Traditional Buildings" by the Japanese government. ✨ Three Must-Visit Experiences in Ine Town 1. Kyoto Station -> Amanohashidate Station -> Bus -> Ine Village (Using the Kansai Wide Pass) It took about 3 hours one way. I think being alone made it easier to embark on this trip. For some, it might not seem worth the effort, but for me, it was a place worth spending the time to visit. If you have the time, planning ahead and staying overnight at the Ine Funaya would be a great idea. At INE CAFE, the best seats are usually taken early by those staying overnight, so I missed the chance to enjoy them. Although it was a tight schedule for a day trip, I managed to make the most of it, even visiting Amanohashidate View Land. The seaside village of Ine Funaya in the summer...
