Everyone talks about France, Italy, and Switzerland, but some of my favorite memories in Europe came from places that rarely get the same attention. The first was Slovenia. You have a hilltop castle overlooking the city, a crystal-clear river winding through the old town, medieval streets, bridges guarded by dragons, and enough greenery to make you wonder whether nature secretly owns the place. All that's missing is a quest-giving wizard standing in the town square. The heart of Ljubljana is the beautiful Ljubljanica River, whose emerald-green waters flow gently through the city center. Lined with cafés, historic buildings, and leafy walkways, the river gives the city a relaxed charm that's hard to resist. One of the things I loved most about Ljubljana was how walkable it was. Unlike some cities where you spend half your vacation trying to figure out buses, trains, trams, and whether Google Maps has suddenly developed a sense of humor, Ljubljana's Old Town is compact enough that most major attractions are within walking distance. Castle? Walk. Cathedral? Walk. Dragon? Definitely walk. And that's when I discovered something even more fascinating. The people of Ljubljana absolutely adore their dragons. Not just a little. A lot. I've visited many cities that celebrate famous kings, saints, historical figures, or important battles. But a city proudly embracing dragons? That's a first. The most famous example is undoubtedly the Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most), one of Ljubljana's most iconic landmarks. Built in 1901, the bridge was one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe and became famous for its magnificent dragon statues standing guard at each corner. According to local legend, the dragon is connected to the mythological hero Jason and the Argonauts, who supposedly encountered and defeated a dragon in the marshes near present-day Ljubljana. The dragon eventually became the symbol of the city itself. And honestly, it's a pretty cool mascot. Far more intimidating than a pigeon. Unfortunately, when I visited, the weather was so hot that standing in the middle of the bridge trying to capture the perfect dragon photo felt like participating in a medieval trial by fire. To make matters even more challenging, the bridge was packed with tourists, locals, cyclists, cars, and probably several hundred other people trying to photograph the exact same dragons. Every time I thought I had the perfect shot, someone appeared. Or a bicycle. Or a bus. Or all three at once. Such is the life of a travel photographer. The dragon obsession doesn't stop there. At Ljubljana Castle, the dragon appears prominently in the city's history and symbolism. Even the adorable LPP Urban Circular Train, which offers a 75-minute sightseeing ride around the city, proudly uses a cheerful green dragon as its mascot. During the tour, visitors can learn about the dragon legends that have become part of Ljubljana's identity. At that point, I was beginning to suspect the dragons were running the city. Even many of the sightseeing boats cruising along the Ljubljanica are painted in vibrant shades of green. Not subtle green. Dragon green. The kind of green that practically announces: "Yes, this city has dragons. Thank you for noticing." And honestly? I loved it. The whole city embraces the theme in a way that feels playful rather than cheesy. By the end of the day, there was only one possible outcome. I bought dragon souvenirs. Several of them. And naturally, one or two dragon T-shirts somehow found their way into my shopping bag as well. Research purposes, obviously. While traveling in Slovenia, I missed Korean food so much that I visited a Korean restaurant in Ljubljana! Here, I got to enjoy tteokbokki and bossam, and it was such a delight to find authentic Korean cuisine in a foreign land 😍. The tteokbokki had a sweet and spicy sauce that tasted almost identical to what I used to have in Korea, which was truly touching. The bossam was tender, free of any unpleasant smell, and had a clean flavor 🥢. Especially with the addition of fresh lettuce wraps and kimchi, it perfectly satisfied my craving for the taste of Korea that I had been missing. I heard that even locals in Ljubljana frequent this place, and after visiting, I could see why it's so popular. The modern white architecture, accented with calming blue details, felt both fresh and serene. Take a relaxing boat ride or hike up to Bled Castle or the Mala Osojnica viewpoint for breathtaking views of Lake Bled and the picturesque countryside. There are multiple spots around to lake to stop and have a picnic. Bled town has several cafes, shops, and restaurants if you prefer to dine inside. 2️⃣ Vintgar Gorge Hop on a €10 shuttle bus from Bled to the Vintgar Gorge where you’ll find a 1.6km gorge highlighted by the Radovna River and its waterfalls, pools, and rapids. Wearing your safety helmet, you’ll walk through the gorge before strolling through some lush Slovenian forest. Be sure to reserve a time slot for the Vintgar Gorge before arriving as you can only enter at a specific time. 3️⃣ Ljubljana Old Town The Old Town of Ljubljana is known for its charming streets, historic buildings, and vibrant atmosphere.
