Heading West in Spain ~ Cáceres (Region) The Parral Bridge in Jarandilla de la Vera is a charming Romanesque stone bridge that is well-maintained and still in use. You can drive over it, and it has been standing for hundreds of years, which seems incredible. Next to the bridge, there is a spectacular swimming pool. The clear water is very cool, and the wooded area provides plenty of shade to relax in. There is ample parking, so it is often quite busy. However, it is a great place to spend a few hours, cool off, and continue exploring the area.

#summervacay Salto del Gitano was such a cool surprise! It’s this jaw-dropping cliff viewpoint in Monfragüe National Park where the vibes are all about nature, peace, and birds, lots of birds. The cliffs rise up crazy high over the Tagus River, and the star attraction here is watching vultures and eagles just casually soaring around like it’s no big deal. You don’t need to hike much either, the viewpoint is super close to the parking area, so it’s perfect for a quick nature stop. We just stood there for ages watching the griffon vultures circling above and nesting in the rock crevices. It was kind of hypnotic. The landscape is stunning too, green hills, rugged cliffs, and the river winding way down below. Bring binoculars if you have them, and maybe a snack to just sit and enjoy the peaceful vibes. If you're into wildlife or just want a chill escape with epic scenery, Salto del Gitano is a total win. Quiet, wild, and totally unforgettable.

Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) If you plan a holiday in Cáceres, make time to visit the Helga de Alberta Contemporary Art Museum, which is sure to amaze you. Admission is currently free, but reservations are required. If you are not a fan of contemporary art, I recommend taking a guided tour, otherwise you will see some works that will leave you indifferent or unable to understand. One of the peculiarities of the building is the almost complete absence of right angles in its structure. The staff was very friendly and always willing to answer any clarifications we asked for, providing you with attentive and unparalleled service. Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) The Torre Yerba is part of the walls of the World Heritage city of Cáceres. It is an architecture of Arabic origin and built on Roman ashlars. It's close to Barbos and the Plaza Mayor itself. Like the rest of the building, it has a square plan and is located within the defensive enclosure of the monumental city of Cáceres. It was called the Albanian Tower (a tower used for defense and watchtower). It is one of the last buildings to stand under Muslim rule in Cáceres and dates back to the 12th century. Based on ancient Roman architecture. Despite its long history, it is in a very good state of conservation. One of the finest examples of palace architecture in Cáceres from the 15th and 16th centuries. It was supposed to have two towers, one on each side of the main facade, but one of them was never completed. The finished tower has a window decorated with an arch. Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) Also known as Casa de los Golfines de Abajo, it is one of the finest stately homes in the historic architectural district of Cáceres. It has a Gothic structure, in keeping with the model of fortress houses built in the 15th century, although its pannier decoration dates from the 17th century. The towers on either side of the facade have different proportions: taller on the right, smaller on the left. The facade is semicircular arch with crests on both sides. Above it are two windows, one with a grille and the other with a semicircular arch. The church, built in the 18th century in Baroque style, is both surprising and saddening. It is located in the center of Cáceres. The location itself is overwhelming, situated on a high hill that requires climbing stairs to reach. The building stands out as it is grayish-white, contrasting with the surrounding stone and ochre-toned buildings. The entry fee is worth it, and it's very affordable. Next to the entrance, there is another spectacular stone facade. The most impressive feature is the main altar, a true gem. A good restoration should be considered to restore the splendor of the walls, which still retain Baroque-style murals. Reusing it as a religious space would certainly be more respected than its current use as a concert venue. From the tower, you can enjoy unparalleled views of Cáceres.

Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) The museum is housed in two connected buildings: Casa de las Veletas, which houses the Moorish cistern, and Casa de los Caballos, which dates from the 16th century. The museum's collections bear witness to the history of the first settlers to the latest contemporary art. Highlights include Bronze Age stelae, Oriental treasures, Iron Age stone boar sculptures, Roman mosaics, ethnographic collections and a collection of 20th-century Spanish art, not to mention the presence of El Greco. After Ferdinand II of León reconquered Cáceres in 1169, a family member founded the Council of Cáceres in the city, which later became known as the Order of Santiago. The tower takes its name from the Caliph Abu Ya'qub, whose troops conquered the city in 1173. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was known as the Belfry. Now open to the public. Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region) The Trujillo Pool is the most original and least known monument in the Trujillo historical complex. For some it has Roman origins (it preserves ashlar made of Anatirosis), an Islamic pool from the Umayyad period that served, among other functions, to water livestock for others , the fact is that it was excavated at a depth of 14 meters. A late 15th-century staircase provides easy access and collects water for cleaning during the summer. Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region) This is a 17th century bridge that got its name from the hermitage next to it; it’s a beautiful stone bridge, but what’s even more striking is its surroundings, which are beautiful. It is a pity that this small bridge is no longer the main access to the city, and its once glorious purpose has been slowly forgotten by the world. Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region) This is a historic station and unfortunately there is only one train left today, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, to Cáceres (and, of course, the onward line to Madrid). Previously this was the main route from Madrid to Lisbon, with many passenger and freight trains running along this line. But towards the end of the last century, traffic gradually decreased until in 2012 only one night train was rerouted through Salamanca; fulfilling the wishes of the Portuguese, who wanted to close their section. Today, it is impossible to travel to Portugal via here, as the Portuguese closed it partially (until Torres Vargens, where it connects with the line to Badajoz). Marvão-Beirã and Castelo de Vide stations have been converted into accommodation facilities, while other stations have been abandoned. On the Spanish side, which remains open, Aldea Moret, Aliseda and Herreruela have been destroyed, while in Arroyo-Malpartida and San Vicente de Alcántara there are only trains left on the line. Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region) The Monastery of Valbon is located on a granite plateau about five kilometers from Valencia de Alcantara. The current ruined building was built in the 16th century. There are two versions that try to explain its origins: the most legendary was created by a group of pilgrims returning from the Abbey of Sainte-Marie in the French town of Valbonne, from where they gave the temple its name. However, another, more historical explanation suggests that the monument was built together with other monasteries in 1569 at the request of Philip II and named "Valbón" (from the Portuguese "good valley" ) naming. The works will be entrusted to Juan Bravo, an important figure in the architectural panorama of Extremadura in the 16th century, and the Marian image named after this topographical consecration is housed in the sanctuary . This carving was declared patron saint of the town in 1618 and was confirmed in 1678 as patron saint not only of the town but of the entire region. The monastery was destroyed during the War of Succession after Portuguese troops invaded the city. However, its final decline was caused by the 18th century declaration of the Virgen de los Remedios as the town's patron saint, as this other carving is housed a few kilometers away from Valencia de Alcantara (Valencia de Alcántara) Closer hermitage. The end of the veneration of Our Lady of Valbon led to the monument being forgotten and abandoned, and the carvings were moved to the convent of Santa Clara, where nothing has been heard from since 1910. Starting next to it, climb the Zafra I, II, III and IV dolmens, from where it is easy to enter the monastery through the lanes between the farms and then follow the path back to the town. Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) Located on the border of Spain and Portugal, all eight of its districts are home to a series of Neolithic dolmens that can be seen following published routes. The first remains found in the city came from different areas of the Paleolithic period. However, it was during the Neolithic period that the first civilizations to settle here left their greatest mark on the city: the cultural center declared that the 41 dolmens (prehistoric burial buildings built with stone slabs) constitute the best megalithic site in Europe. Once in town we discovered the Gothic Jewish Quarter. It is one of the most attractive and best preserved sites in Spain, declared a National Historic-Artistic Site, with its many pointed main facades. The Nuestra Señora de Rocamador Church has also been declared a Historic-Artistic Site. We must not forget the Renaissance Encarnación Church with its Gothic façade. Here is a list of some of the most interesting civil buildings: the palace of Argüillos; the one of the Marquis of Reynaud, in Baroque style but built in Renaissance style; the Montenegrin Palace of Flores, built in the 16th century; and the house of Porres-Montemayor, with walls painted white. Speaking of religious buildings, we have to mention the Church of Santa María la Mayor, built in ashlar stone in Gothic and Renaissance styles, and the Church of Santos Mártires, built between the 16th and 17th centuries and completed only in the 1960s. In the city of Brozas, we found a spa right in the middle of an Extremadura ranch, surrounded by pools where migratory birds breed. The hotel's spa and accommodation are equipped with modern facilities. Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) In Caucos de Yuste we must visit three squares: the Plaza Don Juan de Austria, shaped like an oval and lined with houses with wooden balconies and porches; the Plaza de España; and the Plaza de los Chorros, where the people have a harmonious atmosphere. The Parish Church of Our Lady of Asuncion was built in the 15th century and is one of the most elaborate and interesting sanctuary churches in the area. Yet a large part of Cuacos de Yuste's heritage lies within its municipality. There we found the monasteries of Salvador, La Soledad, and Santa Ana. During the 15th century, the church and its first Gothic cloister were built. A Renaissance cloister was built in the 16th century to the east of the other. However, its international fame is due to the fact that it was the residence of Emperor Charles I when he left the crown to his son Philip II.
