The narrow streets of Old Jerusalem led me to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It was unusual to see its gates without the usual throng of pilgrims—only the occasional shadow gliding across the ancient stones. Entering, I froze: silence, broken only by the whisper of my own footsteps, enveloped the vaults. It seemed as if time itself had slowed. The Edicule, usually surrounded by a line, waited alone. My heart beat faster as I crossed the low threshold. Lamps burned inside, casting flickering reflections on the yellowish marble slab—the very one that preserves the memory of the three-day repose. The air was thick with the scent of wax and incense, and the silence was so dense that I could hear my own heartbeat. In this tiny space, where millions had prayed for centuries, there was now no one but me. I touched the cool stone and suddenly realized: here, in the void, time merged with eternity. Meaning “God Allah is Greatest,” this phrase often preceded terrorist attacks in the West. Located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock is the holiest of the holy for three theistic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. While the general areas outside of the mosque were open to tourists and the Jewish people, the Golden Dome and the mosque only permitted Muslims for worship. At the public area, the Jewish people often encountered animosity. The Arab worshipers that gathered in groups would chant, “alla____hu akbar!” to shoo them (and the secular and the religious tourists) away. Our tour guide stressed again and again: no Bibles! Security at the Dome of the Rock had to do with the presence (or actually, the forced absence) of the Bible. The rule was very strict. That was just one of the many ways that tension expressed itself at the holiest of the holy. The Muslims believed that Prophet Mohammed ascended to Heavens from the foundation rock at the Dome. The Jewish people and the Christians believed that this was the site where Abraham sacrificed his son Isaac. The Arabic chant notwithstanding, the area surrounding the dome was serene. I walked around in the wonderful weather, sun-soaked. Although I fancied a sneak-in for a look, I dared not temper with Muslim religious decrees. Nor would I stretch the limits of our Arabic Christian tour guide’s explicit warnings. A close view of the architecture served all my purposes. Furthermore, the Muslim-Jewish tension at play opened my eyes. Their interactions here were representative of the centuries-old strife between these peoples. Construction for the Golden Dome completed in 691 A.D., by the Muslim Caliph Abd Al Malik. It stood at the former site of a Roman temple, which was built on the yet former site of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. With the Roman invasion came the destruction of the Second Temple in 70A.D. n the Dome’s long history, many religious administrators have overseen and restored the structure. The most notable was the Jordanian Arabs. They shouldered the funds necessary for the gold-plated dome. The Muslim religious trust is the current administrator overseeing the Dome, after years of contentions. The three religions all laid claims on the Dome’s sacredness and significance. We as Catholics, celebrate the birth of Mary, as this is truly the “Birth of Salvation”. We know that Mary went on to give birth to Jesus, our Savior. First of all, be careful not to arrive on a Saturday - it is a holiday and pretty much all shops and restaurants are closed except McDonalds. In case you have no choice, then you can wait until 7 pm when a few smaller shops will open. Most people book a tour to experience Jerusalem. However, if you are not into listening to historic details, just explore by yourself. The Old City is not large and there are no entrance fees to most attractions. If you leave the Old City and walk out West at the Jaffa Gate, you might get Jerusalem city Wifi. It is a bit spotty but helps. Staying overnight is pricey and low cost options are few and can be dicey. I almost wanted to book a bed at the Cinema Hostel as there were vacancies. Thank God I did not but thought to check it out first. On arrival there I stood at a looked door and the voice per speaker told me no vacancies. So be careful, check the places out before you book. If you want to take a local bus to Bethlehem or even to Hebron, go to the Damascus Gate.

Dome of the Rock is a significant Islamic shrine in Jerusalem. It is one of the most sacred sites to both Jews and Muslims! However, before visiting the site, you must do some homework first! While there are multiple entrances to the dome of the rock, you can ONLY enter the dome of the rock as a non muslim from the Western Wall! The entrance is only open for 1-2 hours from Sunday to Thursday and they’ll let you go on a bridge! Also, since it is a religious site, dress as modest as you can! This is the holiest site in Christianity as it contains the site of Jesus's crucifixion and his tomb where rose on the third day. I am not religious but I could feel the weight of history as I entered the church. It is very popular with tourists and pilgrims so be prepared for a long wait at times. The church is located just a few hundred metres from holy Muslim and Jewish sites in the old city.

This is the joy of getting lost! it is a beautiful lane that leads to the Al Aqsa mosque, and will amaze passers by with the array of items on sale. The market has a history that goes back centuries and is noted for its diverse sweets and food on sale. Be aware that non Muslims are not allowed to visit Al Aqsa at certain times.

Some of the highlights of the museum include The Shrine of the Book, which houses the Dead Sea Scrolls, along with other rare early medieval biblical manuscripts. For the art lovers in your group, there are works by famous artists like Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, and Auguste Rodin. Explore a giant crater at Mitzpe Ramon Mitzpe Ramon is one of the most unique experiences in Israel. Located in the Negev desert, it’s a town that sits on the northern cliffs of the Ramon Crater. It’s a great place for hiking or biking, along with exploring wildlife. You can even take a jeep tour of the crater or repel from the edge. With its strange colors and otherworldly feel, The Ramon Crater is about the closest most of us will ever get to seeing Mars. There’s also a recently opened Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Center if you’re interested in learning about the geological story of the crater, the largest landform of its type in the world. Get a great view of the Old City of Jerusalem from the Austrian Hospice If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the Old City but want a better view of the area, this is the place to go. The Austrian Hospice is a 19th century guesthouse that used to cater to German and Austrian visitors to the city. The Dome of the Rock, the Armenian Church of Our Lady of the Spasm, the Mount of Olives, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher are all visible from the roof of the hospice. The rest of the building is worth a visit, too. There’s a Viennese-style cafe where you can sit in burgundy upholstered chairs and admire the chandelier. Visit the 11th wonder of the world at Kibbutz Ein Gedi A kibbutz is a typically agricultural-based collective settlement unique to Israel. The first was built in 1910, and there are currently 270 in the country. While there are plenty of interesting kibbutzim to explore in Israel, Kibbutz Ein Gedi is one of the best options. This kibbutz is located at the edge of the Judean Desert on the west coast of the Dead Sea. The Temple Mount is located in the Old City of Jerusalem and is a holy place for Christians, Jews and Muslims.
