I based in Myoko-Kogen (¥9,000/night pension), took the morning bus to Lake Nojiri (¥500, 20 min), walked the west ridge trail up toward Sekkei-sawa. The cliff moss is the cedar ridge: Hylocomium and Sphagnum in the plantation drainage where the old-growth remnant survives, Fissidens on the basalt outcrop above the lake's north shore, and the cliff below the Myoko ski lift has Metzgeria on the seep—the lake is ringed by red pine and the moss glows at dawn. I walked the 3 km ridge at 06:00 in July, the lake below flat, Mt. Myoko's cone still snow-streaked, a Japanese serow crossing 100 m off (rare, froze). No facilities at the trailhead—carry water, the ridge has none. Mistake: I came in November and the bus to Nojiri ran once a day—Apr–Oct 4–5 times, winter 1. The day after the Nagaoka fireworks festival, I had about an hour to spare before returning my rental car, so I decided to stop by! At first, I thought it would be a small aquarium, but there was a lot more to see than I expected! It was amazing to be able to watch the dolphin feeding and training right in front of me! 🐬✨ I was also surprised by the number of penguins, more than I expected! They were so cute, waddling around together. There were also jellyfish of all sizes, and I was mesmerized for a while by their soft, floating movements in the tank. Every creature was so soothing, and time flew by. Since it was right around the time of the Paris Olympics, there were exhibits of fish in the colors of the French flag and goldfish inspired by the Japanese flag, which made me smile. 😊 What started as a quick detour turned out to be a memorable and wonderful experience.

There are legends that say it is an omen of good things to come, or that it will make you happy. The one in Takada Park was found in the Minamibori moat.
