Tauranga Bay – A Quiet Coastal Escape in Northland
Tauranga Bay is one of those places you often hear about and once you get there, you understand why.
We visited hoping to stay a couple of nights but ended up extending our time thanks to an off-season campground special offering excellent value.
The campground sits right on the beachfront and provides:
Powered sites
Water and dump station
Kitchen and toilet facilities
Showers and washing machines (small additional fee)
What really stands out, though, is the setting.
Tauranga Bay offers long stretches of beach, easy walking access along the coastline, small caves to explore, and excellent fishing opportunities. The surrounding waters support a healthy marine ecosystem, helped by nearby reefs and offshore islands.
And as the day winds down, the sunsets here are something special — wide open skies and uninterrupted views over the ocean make it a perfect place to end the day.
The bay itself is quiet, with only a small number of homes, giving it a peaceful and relatively untouched feel.
Nearby highlights include:
Matauri Bay (approx. 30 minutes) for access to the Rainbow Warrior Memorial
Whangaroa Harbour, ideal for scenic drives, fishing, or boating
