After a lot of studying and planning, I came up with this Mr Fuji itinerary that ended up being the best possible, now I'm here to share it with everyone to make your planning a bit easier! I started by heading to Fuji city, explored there a bit before taking a bus to Fujinomiya for the night, that's the closest city to Fuji-san and the best place to enjoy sunrise views! After your night there, start your day early, enjoy the sunrise views and then take an early bus Kawaguchi lake, along the way you'll pass Lake Motosu and Shoji, for some completely crowd free views of Fuji above their calm and clear waters. Once reached Kawaguchi lake, rent a bike or e-bike and ride around the lake, you can stop along the way for lunch and to take a break at a lovely cafe, I enjoyed it so much that I ended up ringing along the lake twice!!! Take your time and spend most of your day there then bring your bike back to the rental place and head to Fujiyoshida, you can take a bus or taxi but I opted to walk there (it takes around 40 minutes), spend your second night there. If you can, wake up early again and ho enjoy the sunrise at Chureito pagoda, if you can't wake up, like me ahah, head there a bit later in the morning but expect to have to queue a bit, its'sthe only place where you're going to find some crowds but the views make it worth it! After checking out the pagoda and the park around it, it's time to explore the rest of the city, there's more to do and see that you'd expect! Take pics at the iconic Honcho street and then walk up along that road getting closer and closer to Mt Fuji, until you reach the incredibly dreamy Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, probably my fav shrive I visited during my three months in Japan! It's now time to leave Fuji-san, take one last look while heading to your next destination, could be back to Tokyo or somewhere else, I personally went to Kamakura after this short trip to Fuji. I visited Kamakura in the second half of October. The weather was warm, and some people even swam in the sea. I'd like to recommend a one-day itinerary for you. 🧐How to get there: The easiest way is to take the JR Yokosuka Line* from Tokyo Station to Kamakura Station, about 55 minutes without transfers. 🫶🏻What to see: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's main temple and a good starting point for a stroll. Komachi-dori is a lively street with cafes, shops, and Japanese sweets. A great place for lunch. Great Buddha is a famous 13th-century bronze statue at Kotoku-in Temple. The Hase district can be reached on the atmospheric Enoden tram. Hasedera is a beautiful temple on a hillside with views of the city and the coast. Yugahama Beach: End the day with a stroll by the ocean. It's best to leave in the morning and spend the entire day in Kamakura. And if you still have energy, you can add the neighboring island of Enoshima to your trip. #Japan

There was something special about the contrast — the almost black sand under my feet, the bright orange light on the water, surfers coming back to shore and people simply stopping to watch the last minutes of the day. I didn’t need an observation deck, a ticket or any special plan. I just walked to the beach, found a place on the sand and stayed there until the sun disappeared. Kamakura already has such a calm atmosphere, but at sunset it feels even slower. The sea gets darker, people become silhouettes, and for a moment everything looks almost cinematic. The main mistake here isn't the number of cities. It's when people try to string together seven far-flung destinations and end up spending every other day lugging a suitcase around. If you want to see different sides of Japan in one trip, it's best to build your route along a single transit axis and do day trips to some cities without changing hotels. Here is an option I would genuinely recommend for a first trip. DAYS 1–3 • TOKYO 3 nights / 3 days Don't try to see all of Tokyo. Divide the city into logical zones: Day 1: Asakusa → Ueno → Akihabara in the evening Day 2: Meiji Jingu → Harajuku → Shibuya Day 3: Shinjuku → a quieter neighborhood like Kagurazaka or Kiyosumi-Shirakawa This way, in three days, you'll at least get an initial feel for the different vibes of the city. DAY 4 • KAMAKURA 🚆 Tokyo → Kamakura → Tokyo Leave your suitcase at the hotel. Kamakura is perfect as a day trip: temples, green hills, the Great Buddha, and the coast are all relatively close to Tokyo. Basic route: Kita-Kamakura → temples → Hase → Great Buddha → Enoshima or the coast Head back to Tokyo in the evening. City #2 checked off, without changing hotels. DAY 5 • KYOTO Move in the morning: 🚅 Tokyo → Kyoto After checking in, don't try to knock out half the temples right away. WHERE WE SLEEP 🛏 Tokyo: 4 nights 🛏 Kyoto: starting the second block So in the first five days, we've already covered: TOKYO → KAMAKURA → KYOTO without the daily hassle of dragging suitcases around. DAY 6 • KYOTO Dedicate a full day just to Kyoto. For example: 07:30 Kiyomizu-dera → Sannenzaka → Ninenzaka → Yasaka Pagoda → Kodai-ji → Gion Or choose Arashiyama if that's a higher priority for you. Don't try to pack both sides of the city into a single day. DAY 7 • UJI + NARA Here you can combine two small cities along the same train line. Morning: 🍵 Kyoto → Uji Byodo-in → tea street → Uji River. Afternoon: 🚆 Uji → Nara Nara Park → Todai-ji → Kasuga Taisha. In the evening, you can either stay overnight in Nara or head back to Kyoto. To minimize moving around, I'd choose Kyoto as a single base. That takes care of cities #4 and #5. DAY 8 • OSAKA 🚆 Kyoto → Osaka Head over in the morning and drop your bags at the hotel. During the day, you could check out Osaka Castle and the central districts, and in the evening, dive into the Osaka that everyone really comes for: Shinsekai → Namba → Dotonbori. 🛏 Overnight in Osaka. DAY 9 • HIMEJI 🚅 Osaka → Himeji → Osaka City #7. The main goal is Himeji Castle, one of the most beautifully preserved original castle complexes in Japan. After the castle, add in Koko-en Garden. And then... just go back. There's no need to squeeze in three more cities just because the day isn't over yet. DAY 10 • OSAKA Keep the final day free of major travel. You could hit up Kuromon Market, Nakanoshima, Umeda, do some shopping, or just relax for a few hours before your flight. If your return flight is out of Tokyo, you'll need to adjust the itinerary to allow for the trip back to the capital. THE FINAL 7 CITIES 1. Tokyo — the megalopolis 2. Kamakura — temples + sea 3. Kyoto — the historic capital 4. Uji — tea + river 5. Nara — ancient temples + park 6. Osaka — food + nightlife 7. Himeji — the castle OVERNIGHT STAYS Tokyo — 4 Kyoto — 3 Osaka — 2 And this is the key point. 7 cities ≠ 7 hotels. Over ten days, there are only three bases here. Kamakura is a day trip from Tokyo; Uji and Nara from Kyoto; Himeji from Osaka. This is exactly how an itinerary stays action-packed without turning into ten days of: check-out → train station → train → luggage lockers → sightseeing → check-in → repeat. For an itinerary like this, I'd even make a separate saveable cheat sheet: "7 cities / 3 hotels / all transit." It's much more useful here than just another list of attractions.

It gives off major Japanese anime vibes! 🥹🚃🌊 If you love taking photos, this will probably be your favorite part of the day. 🏖️ 15:30 | Yuigahama Beach Wrap up your day with some relaxing downtime at Yuigahama Beach. 🌊 Take a stroll along the shore, sit and rest, snap some photos, listen to the crashing waves, or find a seaside cafe to chill at before heading back. ☕️🤍 If you're visiting when the days are longer, or if you just want to keep exploring, you can extend your route down to Enoshima. But if you prefer a more leisurely pace, sticking to Kamakura + Hase + Yuigahama makes for a perfectly paced full day. 🚃 17:00–18:00 | Return to Tokyo Catch the train back to Tokyo, rest those tired legs, and grab some dinner in the city! 😆🍜 💳 What Pass Should I Buy? For this trip, we departed from our accommodation in the Ueno area early in the morning. We booked one-day passes online, which allow us to enter from Odakyu Station (located in Shinjuku Station). 🚄 We arrived around 7 am. We scanned our tickets to enter the station and checked the train schedules on the screen. Any train to Fujisawa will do; there are both regular and express trains. The train will arrive at Fujisawa Station first (the final station, everyone must get off). If you want to go to Kamakura right away, you should switch to the Enoden train. But we changed our minds at the last minute and randomly walked along the path because we saw arrows pointing to Enoshima (a small island, mostly visited for sunset viewing, with a distant view of Mount Fuji). After wandering around for over an hour, we continued on the main route. We walked to Enoshima Station to take the Enoden train to the next stops. We could easily open our screens and scan the QR codes at the station entrance/exit gates. ⛹🏻 Station 8: Kamakura-Kōkōmae Following in the footsteps of the Slam Dunk manga: Popular photo spots 🚃 Station 10: Inamuragasaki We came to eat grilled fish bowl at Yoridokoro and then had coffee at The Sunrise Shack, a Hawaiian-style beachfront cafe with a stunning view. ⛩️ Station 12: Hase Kōtoku-in Temple (Great Buddha), about a 10-minute walk from the train station. The interior is very shady with many trees. Entrance fee is approximately ¥300 per person. The area around the Great Buddha is very crowded with worshippers. 🍦 Station 15: Kamakura The terminal station with Komachi Dori Street, a pedestrian street lined with souvenir shops. Walk to the end and you'll find Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Temple. The area seems to be divided into several sections, including gardens, private grounds, a shrine, a temple, and a small museum. If you have one day and don't want to spend all your time in Tokyo, you can visit this city. Japan is an absolute paradise for Miffy fans—how are there Miffy specialty stores everywhere?! When I visited Kamakura, there was a two-story Miffy specialty store near Kamakura Station. This location features a ton of Miffy-themed food items (perfect for souvenirs), and you'll want to start taking photos like crazy right at the entrance! Whenever you're in Japan, you have to pop into every Miffy store because they all have exclusive limited-edition items! For instance, this place has Miffy in kimonos and blue-and-white fabric merchandise. There are also a few ID card holders that I've only ever seen at this specific store~ If you're buying souvenirs for friends, the Miffy-shaped dorayaki on the ground floor are super adorable. They also have some candies, cookies, and plenty of cute but completely useless little charms. Having lived in Tokyo for over 10 years, I've visited quite a few shrines over time, and I've discovered that there are actually many other wealth shrines that local Japanese people genuinely visit. Some are famous for "Zeniarai" (washing money for good luck), some are particularly great for praying for career advancement and promotions, and quite a few are highly popular shrines frequently visited by politicians and business elites for years. 💰⛩️ Today, I'm going to round up and share some of the Tokyo wealth shrines I've personally visited and genuinely recommend. When you come here, you absolutely can't miss the "Shirohebi Shimizu" Zeniarai (money-washing) experience. Located in Nagatacho, it's right near the National Diet Building, the Prime Minister's Official Residence, and many government agencies, making it a shrine frequently visited by politicians and business leaders for a long time. It was only after living in Tokyo that I gradually came to understand that the Japanese perspective on "financial luck" is actually quite different from what we might imagine. Many Japanese people believe that a good job, a good boss, good connections, and even a crucial opportunity are all part of financial luck. And what Hie Shrine is best at protecting is precisely this kind of fortune. Additionally, Hie Shrine has a very cute feature: its divine messengers aren't the familiar Komainu (lion-dogs), but monkeys. The most famous thing here is the "Ichiyou Raifuku Omamori," considered by Japanese people to be one of the ultimate representative amulets for attracting wealth. However, the most unique part is that once you get the amulet, you can't just put it in your wallet or hang it up right away. Additionally, a complete "Fujizuka" (a miniature Mount Fuji) is preserved here. Located in Fuchu City, it boasts a history of over 1,900 years and was the principal shrine of the former Musashi Province, holding a very important status in Tokyo's shrine community. Its main enshrined deity has deep ties with Okuninushi-no-Kami of Izumo Taisha, so it has long been a place of worship for wealth, business prosperity, good luck, and good matchmaking. Compared to those popular shrines in the city center, there are far fewer foreign tourists here. Just a 5-minute walk from Hase Station (Enoden Line), you'll find Hasedera Temple—a place where ancient legends meet breathtaking ocean views. 🏯 A Legend Washed Ashore Back in 721, a monk carved two statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, from a massive camphor tree. He kept one at a temple in Nara and cast the other into the sea, trusting the goddess to choose her own home. Fifteen years later, the statue washed ashore in Kamakura, and in 736, Hasedera Temple was built on that very spot. ✨ The Main Treasure: The 11-Faced Kannon The main hall houses a 9.18-meter gilded wooden statue of Kannon with 11 heads, making it one of the largest wooden statues in Japan. In less than two hours, skyscrapers are replaced by ancient temples, retro trains, seaside streets and views of Mount Fuji on a clear day. The best part? You can easily experience both in one full day. ⛩️ Morning – Start in Kamakura Arrive early and begin at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura’s most important shrine. Then wander along Komachi Street for street food, matcha desserts and small souvenir shops. Continue to Hase-dera Temple, one of my favourite spots in Kamakura. Its hillside location offers beautiful views toward the sea, and the temple grounds are especially gorgeous during hydrangea season. Before leaving, stop at the famous Great Buddha of Kamakura at Kotoku-in. 🚃 Afternoon – Ride the Enoden This is part of the experience itself! Take the charming Enoden train toward Enoshima and stop around Kamakurakōkōmae for that iconic railway-crossing-and-ocean scenery. The combination of retro green trains, tiny neighbourhoods and the blue sea makes this journey feel straight out of a Japanese movie. 🏝️ Late Afternoon – Explore Enoshima Cross the bridge onto Enoshima Island and spend a few hours exploring its shrines, narrow shopping streets and seaside viewpoints. If you have time, climb toward Enoshima Sea Candle and the Samuel Cocking Garden. 🌅 Save Sunset for Enoshima This is why I recommend doing Kamakura first and Enoshima second. On a clear evening, the coastline around Enoshima can offer an incredible sunset with Mount Fuji in the distance. Climb the stone steps to pay your respects at the city's most important shrine, surrounded by a serene and shady atmosphere. · 10:30 AM | Hokokuji Temple (Bamboo Forest): Head back to the front of the shrine and catch local bus route 鎌23 or 鎌24 to the Jomyoji bus stop. Soak in the tranquility of the towering green bamboo grove. Kamakura is the best option for a day trip from Tokyo. The best time to go there is June. It’s hydrangea (ajisai) season, so the town is full of flowers in bloom. Getting there: Take the JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line straight from Shinjuku Station — about an hour ride, roughly 1,040 yen, no transfers needed. One thing to watch: only trains headed to Zushi go all the way to Kamakura. If yours see trains to Odawara or Kozu, you’ll have to switch at Ofuna. Worth checking the board twice before you board. What to see: · Kotoku-in — the Great Buddha. Thirteen meters of bronze that’s been sitting there since the 1200s. A short walk from Hase-dera, so pair the two. · Kamakura Seaside Park Stretches along Yuigahama and Inamuragasaki, with the Inamuragasaki end especially good in June, when hydrangeas line the cliffside steps above the water. Clear day and you’ll catch Enoshima and even Fuji across the bay. · Komachi Street The street with all the food stalls near the station. Good for grabbing something to eat on your way back to the train. 🍜 Restaurant recommendation: Near Hase Station, up a set of stairs above a coffee shop, there’s a small place called Kaedena doing kamameshi — rice cooked to order in individual clay pots, with your pick of toppings like pork or whitebait, plus a handful of little side dishes. It fills up and doesn’t take lunch reservations, so get there early or you’ll be waiting. Also — cash only, so don’t get caught out.

During my visit to Kamakura, I made a stop at Kencho-ji Temple (建长寺), one of the most important Zen Buddhist temples in Japan. Founded during the Kamakura period, it is recognized as Japan's first formal Zen temple and serves as the head temple of the Kencho-ji branch of the Rinzai sect. It is also ranked first among the famous Kamakura Five Mountains temples. Walking through the temple grounds, I could immediately feel the peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Kencho-ji is home to numerous cultural treasures, including the National Treasure temple bell and several Important Cultural Properties such as the Sanmon Gate, Karamon Gate, and Hojo Hall. One of the highlights of Kencho-ji is the beautiful approach leading from the main gate to the Sanmon Gate. This pathway is lined with Somei Yoshino cherry trees, creating a breathtaking tunnel of pink blossoms from late March to early April. During sakura season, the temple becomes a popular destination filled with visitors and photographers. Wanting to experience the temple in a quieter setting, I chose to visit in early summer instead. The peaceful atmosphere allowed me to fully appreciate the temple's architecture and Zen gardens without the crowds. Besides cherry blossoms, Kencho-ji is also famous for its stunning autumn foliage and elegant camellia flowers, making it a wonderful destination throughout the year. As I continued along the approach, a magnificent structure suddenly appeared before me—the impressive Sanmon Gate. Standing approximately 20 meters tall, this grand gate was rebuilt in 1775 and is formally known as Sankaitomon, the "Three Gates of Liberation." In Zen Buddhism, passing through this gate symbolizes leaving behind worldly desires and entering a state of spiritual purity. The combination of historical architecture, serene temple grounds, and seasonal beauty makes Kencho-ji one of Kamakura's most rewarding cultural attractions.
