We had an amazing time on our 13-day organised coach tour. Starting in Darwin, we traveled to Kakadu, then moved on to Katherine, explored The Kimberley, and finally arrived in Broome. Along the way, we enjoyed two scenic flights and three boat cruises at various locations. One highlight was having an evening meal on a boat floating on the water at Katherine Gorge—just one of many unforgettable moments.

I love sharing my experiences with fellow travelers, and let me tell you, while everyone flocks to Kakadu’s Jim Jim or Twin Falls, there is one spot that is often completely overlooked, and I cannot wait to scream its name from the rooftops: Koolpin Gorge. It is tucked away in the southern part of the park and requires a permit to enter, keeping crowds to a bare minimum. When I arrived, I felt like I had stumbled upon my own private paradise. The towering orange cliffs and secluded swimming holes were just magic. If you are looking for that true, untouched, storytelling kind of adventure, Koolpin is it. Before you go, ensure you have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, as the road to the gorge can be rough and often inaccessible in the wet season, so always check with the local Bowali Visitor Centre for current conditions. While most people skip it for easier access points, this stunning location requires a bit of planning but is totally rewarding for those willing to venture slightly off the main trail. Koolpin Gorge has a fascinating backstory; it was actually a uranium mining exploration site back in the day, but it’s now a completely protected sanctuary with strict entry controls to preserve its delicate environment and cultural significance. My favourite activity there is simply taking my time to hike through the various rock pools, as shown in the images, where every corner I turned felt more beautiful than the last. I recommend starting with the lower pools for a relaxing soak, but the real magic is hiking to the upper sections where you get breathtaking views of the gorge and can discover more swimming spots you might have all to yourself. To maximize your time and budget, plan to spend a whole day here and pack your own lunch and lots of water, as there are no facilities. It really helps to have an early start to beat the midday sun. For the true explorers, bringing a pair of water shoes is a game-changer for navigating the slippery underwater rocks and finding the best hidden pockets in the stone. For those planning to visit, here’s my ultimate local suggestion: Koolpin is all about taking the path less traveled. You’ll find incredible indigenous rock art as you explore, offering a deeper connection to the location beyond just the scenery. To keep things budget-friendly, I suggest organizing your own self-guided trip to the gorge if you have a suitable vehicle and are comfortable navigating the rough track. Combining the trip with camping nearby at Gunlom or Maguk is also a great way to save and experience the night life of the park without going over budget. If you don't have a 4WD, investing in a reputable tour from Katherine or Jabiru could save you a huge headache and potentially a costly towing fee. Remember to practice leave-no-trace principles so we can all continue to enjoy amazing, underrated spots like Koolpin for years to come. Entire trip very well organised. Boat skipper extremely interesting and informative, he had a wealth of information. Stunning setting, dinner was delightful with plenty of well presented dishes. Staff attentive and friendly. Just gliding along during dinner, spotlight on the rocks and soft music playing...perfect. Absolutely amazing. Captain of boat was very informative and a great guy. The dinner crew were very courteous and helpful, the meal was very good and delicious. Certainly want to come back. Magnificent experience. Totally exceeded expectations.. staff friendly and full of knowledge. Dinner was fantastic.. service and quality The tour was excellent. The information and the initial trip up and down the first two gorges was wonderful - especially as sunset developed. The meal was very well presented and it was lovely to experience the change of light in the gorge. Happily we also had a lovely and interesting couple at our table. At the top art gallery in Catherine, the staff handed the wallaby to my arms. This eight-month-old baby kangaroo is also not afraid of people, naughty in my arms to see the West, but also grabbed my hair and picked it up. The staff handed the kangaroo to me and there was no trace. I walked to the open space outside the art gallery with the kangaroo. There was a slightly larger kangaroo playing on the yard. The sun shines through the layered leaves, and sits on the chair in the courtyard to feed the baby kangaroos. This art gallery is really worthy of this trip.

This place, called Top Didj and Art Gallery, looks like a museum of art. It is more like an art museum than an art museum. The dazzling array is full of indigenous hand-made goods, bracelets made of crocodile skin, refrigerator stickers with pictures of indigenous artists, tablecloths, backpacks, various carvings and gadgets that don't know what the material is. The price is reasonable, but it is more interesting than the tourist souvenirs bought in the general town streets. I was burying my head and picking up souvenirs. I didn't expect a small surprise to come. I saw the staff hugged a small kangaroo and walked in. I didn't expect her to come to me and ask me: "Do you want to hold it for a while? Of course!"
