This short, easy walk leads you across a bridge over the Vermilion River to a series of cold, mineral-rich springs. The dissolved iron leaches out and stains the surrounding earth and pools a brilliant palette of deep orange, yellow, and rusty red—it looks like something from another planet! This site holds significant cultural value as the ochre clay was historically used by the Ktunaxa First Nation for paint pigments and ceremonial purposes. It’s a very different kind of beauty than the usual alpine lakes and a great way to break up the drive through the park. An easy, worthwhile, and colorful addition to any #canadatrip.
