The Holy Trinity Church is located on the main street of Košice, Slovakia. It is the city's most valuable Baroque building and is also known as the Jesuit Church or the Premonstratensian Church. The site was a royal palace in the Middle Ages, and in the early 17th century, Jesuits established a chapel here; in 1619, three Jesuit priests were tortured to death by soldiers, causing a citywide sensation. To appease God's wrath, the wife of Francis II Rákóczi purchased the site and built a new church modeled after the Church of the Gesù in Rome, completed in 1681. Subsequently, the Jesuits founded Košice's first university nearby. The church's interior is exquisitely decorated, housing an illusionistic mural painted by Erasmus Schrott in 1786, several side altar paintings, and precious wood carvings; the benefactor Princess Sophia Báthory and her son are also buried here.
