Kosice 🏙️
#autumnbeauty
I recently spent a few days in Košice, Slovakia, and it quickly became one of my favorite cities in Europe! 🏙️ The mix of old-world charm and modern energy makes it such a unique destination. Strolling through the city center, I was blown away by the stunning architecture, especially St. Elisabeth’s Cathedral, which is the largest in Slovakia. Entry to the cathedral is free, but I highly recommend paying the small fee (around €2) to climb the tower for breathtaking views of the city.
Košice’s main street, Hlavná Ulica, is filled with cafes, shops, and historical buildings. I spent hours just wandering and soaking up the atmosphere. Don’t miss the Singing Fountain, a quirky but beautiful attraction that comes alive with music and lights. Nearby, I also explored the Košice Zoo and the botanical gardens, perfect for an afternoon in nature. Košice is a must-visit for anyone traveling through Slovakia—filled with history, culture, and charm!

🗺️ Exploring Kosice at Every Budget
📍 Place:
Kosice, Slovakia
✨ What it felt like:
Walking through the old town was a highlight of my trip. The wide pedestrian streets, impressive cathedral, cafés, and historic buildings created a welcoming atmosphere that made it easy to spend hours exploring at a relaxed pace.
👀 What stood out:
Kosice is a destination that works well for every budget. Budget travelers can enjoy affordable bakeries, traditional Slovak meals, free walking tours, and inexpensive trams around the city. Mid-range visitors have plenty of boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, museums, galleries, and rooftop cafés to choose from. For a luxury stay, elegant hotels, fine dining, private guided tours, spa experiences, and premium wine tastings offer a more refined way to discover the city's rich culture.
💡 Exclusive tip:
Stay near Hlavna Street to be within walking distance of most attractions, restaurants, and cafés. Visit the Cathedral Tower in the late afternoon for beautiful city views, then enjoy the lively atmosphere as the old town lights up in the evening.
❤️ Personal feeling:
What I enjoyed most was how effortlessly Kosice combines history, culture, and everyday local life. It's the kind of city where I'd happily return with my family to wander the streets, try local cafés, and simply enjoy the atmosphere together.

Outside of Rome, the most authentic "Church of Jesus" in Košice!
The Holy Trinity Church is located on the main street of Košice, Slovakia. It is the city's most valuable Baroque building and is also known as the Jesuit Church or the Premonstratensian Church.
The site was a royal palace in the Middle Ages, and in the early 17th century, Jesuits established a chapel here; in 1619, three Jesuit priests were tortured to death by soldiers, causing a citywide sensation. To appease God's wrath, the wife of Francis II Rákóczi purchased the site and built a new church modeled after the Church of the Gesù in Rome, completed in 1681. Subsequently, the Jesuits founded Košice's first university nearby.
The church's interior is exquisitely decorated, housing an illusionistic mural painted by Erasmus Schrott in 1786, several side altar paintings, and precious wood carvings; the benefactor Princess Sophia Báthory and her son are also buried here.

The most enchanting Neo-Gothic castle in Kosice!
In Košice, Slovakia, there is a fairy-tale-like palace—the Jakab Palace. Completed in 1903, it is a dreamlike masterpiece of Neo-Gothic architecture, with towering spires, exquisite bay windows, and vintage arches that make you feel as if you have stepped into a medieval castle painting.
What makes it especially unique is that during its construction, stone carvings left over from the renovation of St. Elizabeth's Cathedral were incorporated, adding a touch of the charm of time. This place was once the architect’s dream home for his family and briefly served as the presidential residence, witnessing many historic moments.
Today, it is managed by the city government. Although the interior is not yet open for visits due to property disputes, just gazing at the highly imaginative facade details from the outside is enough to feel a frozen legend. If you pass through Košice, don’t miss this silent and elegant “old gentleman” on the corner of the street.

Hostel Happy Dog in Kosice Slovakia
Spent a few cozy days in Ruidera and honestly, this little village is seriously underrated! 🌄 If you’re after warm vibes and easy access to the stunning natural park, here’s why Hostel Happy Dog should be your top pick. The hostel isn’t just budget-friendly, it’s perfect for winter – super toasty inside, with the coziest little kitchen fully set up and a genuine home-away-from-home feel. There’s something about working or just chilling under those wood ceilings that makes you want to stay even longer!
Must-see in Ruidera:
– Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park: These turquoise lagoons are the highlight! You can hike, picnic, or just wander by the water – it’s gorgeous even in the winter fog.
– Ruidera town center: Grab coffee at a local café or stock up on snacks at the mini market. Everything’s within walking distance, so getting around is a breeze.
Getting around: Walk everywhere in town – it’s tiny! If you want to see all the lakes, a quick taxi gets you to the further ones in the park. The region can get cold, so pack layers.
Food tips: Stock up at the local supermarket, then cook in Hostel Happy Dog’s cute shared kitchen (great for meeting other travelers and saving money). Most cafés in town serve classic Spanish snacks and coffee if you’re eating out.
Travel hacks: Booking Hostal Happy Dog in advance is smart in winter (it fills up!). The warming atmosphere and central location make it the best spot to base yourself.

Kosice Slovakia night🎄
Slovakia’s Ruidera is not your usual European stop—and that’s what makes it a hidden gem 🌟. If you’re chasing that Christmas vibe and love dreamy Gothic buildings lit up at night, this place will catch your eye! ⛪✨
Must-See Places:
1. The Nice Church (Address: Ul. Hlavná 31, Ruidera, Slovakia | Open 9:00–18:00) – Drop by after sunset to see this Gothic wonder illuminated. The intricate architecture pops with those festive lights and makes for killer photos!
2. Park Paradise (Across from the church | Open all day) – Perfect for a post-church stroll, especially if you want to soak in an outdoor cultural vibe. Locals set up Christmas stalls here so grab a mulled wine and check out the crafts!
3. Western-Style Architecture Tour – On foot, wander Ruidera’s old town: you’ll spot cozy cafés and more Western-inspired buildings. At night, the glow turns the whole area into a festive postcard.
My Tip: Visit the church during the evening. The lighting reveals details you’ll miss in daylight — seriously, it’s Insta-gold. The park is best for a relaxed vibe and quick bites from seasonal pop-up stalls. 🌲
How to Get Around:
Ruidera is walkable! Park your ride and explore on foot, especially after dusk when the architecture shines.
Food Recommendations:
Look for “Slovak Christmas pastry” sold near Park Paradise. Pair it with a hot drink from a street vendor for local flavor.
Destination Tips:
No visa hassle if you’re in Schengen. Bring cash for small Christmas stalls, and bundle up—the evenings get chilly!

📍 Kosice Garden Review 🌿
#2026NewYear
Mestski Park, just a short walk from Košice's Old Town, is a city garden where locals and travelers alike can relax. 😊 The floating fountain, located in the center of the park, naturally caught my eye during my stroll. Its floating form on the water was unique, and the surrounding grass and trees added a soothing touch.
⛲ Benches and a well-maintained walking path around the fountain made it a great place to sit and rest. I was impressed by the sight of families with children and locals leisurely strolling. While not a flashy tourist destination, it was a memorable spot for slowing down during my trip. ✨ It's a healing spot in Košice that I especially recommend on a nice day.
✅ Walking trails close to the Old Town
✅ Unique fountain floating on the water
✅ A park perfect for a moment of relaxation

Review of St. Michael’s Chapel in Košice
St. Michael’s Chapel, located within the old town of Košice, is a small chapel quietly situated next to the cathedral 😊. Though modest in size, it is a great spot to visit as it beautifully preserves the medieval Gothic style. It was easy to include in the sightseeing itinerary without any hassle.
🕯 The interior exudes a calm and solemn atmosphere, leaving a stronger impression of tranquility rather than grandeur. The low ceilings and stone structure enhance the unique ambiance of a medieval chapel, making it feel like a peaceful retreat away from the noise outside ✨. It’s a wonderful place to experience the historical essence of Košice up close.
✅ Conveniently located near St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral
✅ Small but well-preserved medieval Gothic atmosphere
✅ A quiet and relaxing spot to explore

🚄RegioJet, a super affordable European rail brand
#NovemberDestinations2025
If you're planning to travel in Central Europe, RegioJet is definitely my go-to "budget travel" option! It's known for being cheap, clean, and offering decent service, especially useful for travel between the Czech Republic 🇨🇿, Slovakia 🇸🇰, Austria 🇦🇹, and Hungary 🇭🇺. Here's the menu provided on board; you must order through the mobile app! The food takes a while to arrive, so it's a good idea to ask as soon as you board (also, when we took it, the Japanese sushi was gone in a flash – too bad we didn't get to order it!).
💛How cheap is RegioJet?
· Tickets are often more than 50% cheaper than the national railway.
· Sometimes cross-border fares are only €10-15.
· Various seat types: Standard, Standard+ (wider), Business, First Class
· Even with a cheap ticket, the seats are more comfortable than you might expect!
✨My own travel experience
· The carriages were very clean; unlike cheaper brands where quality is sacrificed.
· Each carriage had unlimited free hot drinks (coffee/tea) ☕️!! • Internet Wi-Fi is generally usable but the speed is average.
· Tickets can be shown on your phone; there's no need to print them out (but we still printed some; it's fine if you only need to show your phone).
· Luggage space is slightly limited.
🚉What routes is it suitable for?
RegioJet's strongest point is its international routes👇
· Budapest ⇄ Prague
· Prague ⇄ Vienna
· Prague ⇄ Bratislava
· Vienna ⇄ Bratislava
· There are even seasonal services to the Croatian coast.
Whether you're a student, a solo traveler, or a budget traveler, it's perfect!
⸻
🎫How to book tickets
· Buy directly from the official website
· You can also use the app: RegioJet
· It's recommended to buy 1-2 weeks in advance; the earlier you buy, the cheaper it is.
· Payment can be made with a credit card.
