The most breathtaking sight is the approach to Okunoin. Towering cedars envelop the ancient tombstones of legendary warlords and historical figures. Cloaked in morning mist and dappled light, it exudes a timeless serenity. Experiencing a shukubo (temple lodging) overnight is equally remarkable. From savoring shojin ryori (traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) to participating in morning sutra chanting and hearing the resonant toll of the morning bell, travelers can briefly escape the hustle and bustle of city life and rediscover profound inner peace. Mount Koyasan is a place I simply couldn't skip! I made that decision the moment I started planning my trip to Japan. Koyasan is the center of the esoteric Shingon sect of Buddhism, founded in 805 by the monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi. Visiting a sacred Buddhist UNESCO World Heritage site, spending the night in a temple lodging (shukubo), and taking a night tour of the cemetery—I'd never experienced anything quite like it. I was a bit intimidated by the complex route with its various transfers, but it actually turned out to be incredibly simple and convenient. Just buy a 2-day pass at Namba Station in Osaka. Then, trust the meticulously planned Japanese transit schedule—the train, cable car, and bus seamlessly connect, giving you just enough time to reach the boarding areas and even grab a bathroom break along the way) We chose to stay at the Henjoukoin temple. Originally, these temple lodgings only housed Buddhist priests and practitioners, but today they also welcome everyday tourists. We received a warm welcome and were shown to our spacious second-floor room, which featured traditional Japanese sliding doors adorned with gold paintings and a high-tech toilet. You can take a shower and soak in the hot onsen between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Here’s what we did: we dropped off our luggage and, before our 5:30 PM dinner, visited all the major landmarks (the Tokugawa Mausoleum, the Reihokan Museum, and the temples founded by Kukai—Kongobuji and Garan). Conveniently, they all close right at 5:00 PM. At 5:30 PM, all the temple guests gathered in one room to enjoy a beautifully presented Buddhist vegetarian dinner (shojin-ryori). It’s prepared strictly according to Buddhist precepts, featuring vegetables, beans, and other plant-based ingredients. After dinner, we headed to Japan’s largest cemetery, Okunoin, arriving just as dusk was settling in. We strolled down pathways lined with towering cedars, moss-covered tombstones, and monuments dedicated to samurai, rulers, monks, and common folk alike, all while stone lanterns began to glow around us. Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum sits at the heart of the Okunoin cemetery, just past the bridge and the hall of lanterns—where some lanterns are said to have been burning continuously for 900 years. Buddhists believe that Kobo Daishi hasn't passed away; rather, he rests in a state of eternal meditation (samadhi), awaiting the arrival of Maitreya Buddha. Monks bring him ritual meals every morning and evening. They want to be closer to their leader. Everyone buried here hasn't truly died; they are waiting to witness the arrival of the Buddha alongside their master to achieve enlightenment. We got back to the temple in the dark at 7:30 PM. That left us just enough time for a half-hour soak in the bath. The next day, morning prayers and a short guided tour awaited us. Henjoukoin once served as the temple of Emperor Shirakawa, and today it houses significant Japanese national treasures, which we got to see during a brief tour right after morning prayers. A monk explained the fire ceremony to us, where wooden plaques inscribed with wishes are burned to help them come true. At this particular temple, the fire ceremony is held on the 28th of every month. After the tour, breakfast was served. We then headed back to the cemetery for a deeper exploration. You can also explore other temples or hike the scenic pilgrimage trails through the forest. We traveled back to Osaka using the exact same route in reverse—bus, cable car, and train. I’ve heard the last bus leaves at 9:00 PM, so you could definitely visit Mount Koyasan as a day trip. However, staying overnight in a temple will undeniably make your experience much more fulfilling.

Your destination is the Umeda Sky Building. Arrive an hour or two before sunset to calmly wait in line and ascend to the legendary rooftop with an OPEN observation deck. Dress warmly! Hidden gem: Set aside time for Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple. This ancient cemetery with thousands of stone statues creates an atmosphere of quiet sorrow and tranquility. ⛩️ Day 8–9: Koya-San — A Night in a Temple and Pilgrim's Path Ascend the sacred mountain by cable car. Don't forget to bring some food from a convenience store to your lodging; the monk's meal of ten types of tofu and rice might not be enough for you. 🚄 Day 9: Return to Osaka and High-Speed Transfer to Tokyo via Shinkansen Impressive speed, comfort, and a view of Mount Fuji (weather permitting!). 🏙️ Day 10–14: Tokyo — The City of the Future Day 10: Tokyo — Imperial and Technological Morning: Imperial Palace (only the East Garden) and Chidorigafuchi moat — an oasis of tranquility. When visiting Japan for the first time (and for me, it was also my first major solo trip), it's crucial not to get lost in the desire to see as many places as possible and to take a break from the urban chaos. Mount Koya (Koya-san) is perfect for this. 📅 Itinerary (I traveled from Osaka to Tokyo, leaving around 9 AM, and still couldn't see everything I wanted): Day 1: The journey from Osaka takes about 2.5 hours. First, get from your hotel to Namba. While you can buy individual tickets, it's not necessary. It's better to purchase a combined ticket at Namba (to Koya-san and back—if you're heading to Tokyo the next day, you'll need to return anyway since Shinkansen trains depart from Namba). The ticket also includes unlimited bus rides in Koya-san and perks like souvenir coupons and discounts for attractions. The journey to the mountain is an experience in itself: as soon as you leave the city, you'll encounter stunning rural landscapes, rice fields, and from Hashimoto, the mountains begin. I was taking photos every kilometer. Then, there's a 10-minute ride on a special cable car through the forest up the mountain, followed by a 15-minute bus ride along winding roads to the town. Check-in at the temples is usually by 6 PM. If you don't have heavy luggage, take a walk first. The area isn't very large, and you can get everywhere on foot (buses are only necessary if you're short on time). Points of interest include Kondo, Kongobu-ji (a fairly large complex with many traditional rooms featuring beautiful interiors, screens, and painted walls), the Reihokan Museum, Konpon Daito, and the Tokugawa Mausoleum. Check into the temple and enjoy the peace and tranquility. This is what captivated me about this place. It's incredibly serene: the sounds of birds, rustling trees, and the trickling of water in Japanese gardens surround you. I happened to visit during rain, which I cursed while walking under an umbrella but later found soothing as I opened the shoji to the balcony at night and fell asleep to its sound. The monks at Jimyo-in Temple speak good English. However, this isn't the case at every temple, as I discovered when I accidentally entered the wrong one and had difficulty communicating. Relax in the communal bath. Initially, I felt awkward, but it was incredibly rejuvenating after the travel fatigue. Dinner is excellent, but keep in mind that it's vegetarian and includes a lot of tofu. If this doesn't suit you, consider bringing some snacks in advance. At night, visit the cemetery for a walk. It's stunningly beautiful. Day 2: Temples usually hold morning prayers at 6:30 AM. Afterward, there's breakfast, and you can leave immediately if you're in a hurry. However, I recommend savoring the moment and sitting in the silence a bit longer. 🏨 Accommodation: Definitely choose one of the temples in Koya-san. It's essential for an unforgettable experience and immersion in Buddhist culture. 🍴 Food: The town offers a variety of options, from traditional Japanese cuisine to street food, sweets, ice cream, drinks, and coffee (note: there are no 24-hour establishments in the town). However, I recommend enjoying the vegetarian meals at the temple where you stay. IMPORTANT! When booking, opt for plans that include dinner and breakfast; otherwise, you'll miss out on a lot. 📌 If you're traveling from Osaka/Kyoto, just start early (at least by 8 AM, but earlier is better), and two days will be enough. 📌 If you're coming from Tokyo, I recommend allocating three days. 📌 Tickets for the rapid train to Koya-san come with unreserved seats (like in the subway), reserved seats, and first-class options. If you're not traveling during peak holiday seasons, don't worry—unreserved seats will have plenty of availability.

Japan Travel✈️ Almost missed sharing a super niche Kansai itinerary, 🤔 I want to write this for friends who love unique cultural experiences + food exploration but worry about language barriers! · 🚗Day 1 Departure - Osaka Fly direct from Shanghai to Kansai Airport (for destinations without direct flights, you can arrange connecting flights). To ease the stress for friends with average language skills, the airport pickup is with a Chinese-speaking driver! · Then check into a hotel in the Shinsaibashi area~ There are so many great hotels here you can’t even count! The Ritz-Carlton is very close to the Michelin-starred restaurant Kikunoi, and there’s also the reasonably priced Hilton... Personally, I prefer the W Hotel, which is all black! The hotel is right on Shinsaibashi main street, just a 10-minute walk to Dotonbori, making shopping and dining very convenient. · 🚗Day 2 Osaka - Wakayama There’s a themed train here you must experience! The train cars are decorated with lots of cat elements and paintings, even the stationmaster is a cat—super cute! My family and I recently went on a 8D7N trip to Osaka, Japan and we stayed at Hotel Gracery Osaka Namba which was located near Jr Namba. We travelled using the OCAT bus from Kansai International Airport to our hotel as the hotel is located just right beside the Bus Terminal. The hotel is within walking distance to the subway and the massive underpass will also bring you to the iconic Dotonbori. During the stay at Osaka, we also travelled to Koyasan, Ama-no-Hishidate, Ine, Miyamachokita. The views were absolutely mesmerising. Food there was definitely a bomb!
