In front of the station, you'll find the statue of Kumahachi Aburaya, the father of Beppu tourism, along with a free footbath—a great spot for a quick look around. Right next door, I kicked off my grocery run at Maruyama Store. The first thing that caught my eye was the bento section. The variety was incredible, ranging from standard sushi and pressed sushi to Japanese homestyle bento boxes. Over at the deli section, the shelves were packed with classic Japanese comfort food like grilled eel, tonkatsu, grilled fish, and teriyaki dishes. If you visit in the evening, you'll start spotting “2割引” (20% off) stickers, and later on, you can score discounts of up to 50%. It was the perfect place to grab some late-night bites or a quick breakfast to enjoy back at the hotel. Since it’s so close to Beppu Station, it’s super convenient to pop in before heading back to your accommodation after a day of sightseeing. #itinerarycheck The forecast showed heavy rain every day before my trip, so as a planner type, I just decided to "lie flat" and not make any plans. Unexpectedly, the journey was smooth and joyful! If you also prefer a relaxed travel style without rushing or overpacking, save this 5-day, 4-night easygoing Fukuoka guide. Day 1: Arrived at Fukuoka Airport in the afternoon, which is very close to the city center. First, dropped off luggage at the hotel, then visited Canal City where shopping is super convenient. Outdoor enthusiasts can also grab gear at ALPEN. In the evening, I took the "Nakagawa Water Bus," the 6:30 pm Chuo line. The sunset view was fantastic! You can walk from the pier to the main branch of Ichiran Ramen, and the famous Nakagawa Yatai stalls are right next door. Day 2: Spent the whole day at "Uminonakamichi." In the morning, visited the Marine World to see dolphin and sea lion shows, plus super cute otter and penguin feeding sessions. Lunch was at a restaurant inside the park, eating while watching the dolphins swim by. In the afternoon, headed to Seaside Park and rented a bike to ride around at a leisurely pace. The Starbucks designed by Kengo Kuma is also a must-visit spot. On the way back, I browsed Yodobashi Camera next to Hakata Station. The 3rd-floor outdoor section has a full range of brands, including Mammut, Arc'teryx, Pata... The Lopia supermarket on the 4th floor is highly recommended! Although it's cash-only, the deals are amazing! A tray of uni was only 70 yen, a huge pizza for just over 20 yen, and a huge selection of sashimi, sushi, and fried foods... Day 4: Spontaneously signed up for a one-day Kyushu tour. Luckily, I got to see Mt. Aso and bought an adorable Kumamon bear made from volcanic ash. At Kusasenri, I went horseback riding. The colored statues at Kumanoza Shrine made me feel like I'd stepped into an anime world. Soaking in the Kurokawa Onsen was incredibly relaxing... and to top it all off, a bottle of cold milk. Perfect. · Day 5: On my last morning, I rushed to "Ohori Park" to take a photo with Yayoi Kusama's giant pumpkin. The currently trendy personal hot pot fits my needs perfectly. So, I asked a good friend out to enjoy an individual hot pot this day. We chose HAKATA NABE located on Tang Lung Street in Causeway Bay, which has an exquisite and eye-catching storefront. Since seating is limited, remember to book a table if you really want to try it. The restaurant features highly cost-effective individual shabu-shabu and sukiyaki! It's absolutely insane that you can savor Kagoshima Satsuma Wagyu and Japanese rice-fed pork delivered straight from Kyushu farms in Japan without breaking the bank. Follow the shop's social media platforms and upload a food photo to get a free drink! As a frugal housewife, I certainly wouldn't miss such a great opportunity haha. I picked a cold Oolong tea worth $20, which was the perfect match for the steaming hot pot. I opted for the Hokkaido Rice-fed Pork Set at $168! For the soup base, I chose the Hakata Signature Spicy Soup for an extra $15. This set is incredibly generous, including pork belly, appetizers, a vegetable basket, udon, and dessert. The restaurant's brand-new culinary team is led by a crew apprenticed to a Hokkaido ramen head chef! They've infused the ramen artisans' ultimate pursuit of soup into the individual shabu-shabu, creating 4 brand-new, rich soup bases that are drinkable on their own. My Hakata Signature Spicy Soup had a vibrant orange-red color that looked amazing. It's made by slowly stir-frying a variety of chili sauces and chili powders to bring out the aroma, then combined with a clear broth made from fresh chicken and kelp. The spiciness is rich in layers and wonderfully satisfying, making it a perfect match for both the fatty wagyu and the pork. The appetizer was a sour and crisp pickled cucumber that instantly whetted the appetite. This plate of pork belly was a full 180g—even a big eater like me couldn't finish it all! The vegetable basket was colorful and exceptionally fresh! It included baby cabbage, mizuna, pumpkin, radish, baby corn, shiitake mushrooms, and tofu. The mix of meat and vegetables offered a very well-balanced nutritional profile. For the staple, you can choose from white rice, ramen, or udon! I chose udon to pair with the spicy soup. First, toss all the vegetables into the spicy soup! Savor the veggies that have soaked up the fragrant and spicy broth, and then slowly enjoy the premium pork.
