Takachiho Gorge is breathtaking, with its emerald waters and majestic canyon walls. The ultimate way to experience it is by renting a rowboat to navigate between the towering basalt cliffs. Gliding right up to the famous waterfalls and feeling the spray is both relaxing and incredibly romantic. In addition to rowing, the open-air sightseeing train along the high-elevation tracks is a major highlight. Looking down at the lush green forest and the gorge below as the breeze brushes your face instantly sweeps away the stress of daily life. Whether you're exploring the water's edge or taking in the view from above, Takachiho Gorge showcases nature's finest artistry. If you've been to Japan a few times and feel like you know the country quite well, I think you should try going south. Kyushu gave me a very different feeling about Japan. The first time I saw pictures of Takachiho Gorge, I had a feeling: I absolutely had to go there. And when I actually set foot in Kyushu, I realized that the most attractive thing about this place wasn't just the scenery. It was the feeling of a more liberal, open Japan, less constrained by familiar rules. The pace of life was also more relaxed. And the nature… was truly breathtaking. Kyushu is a geological area with many active volcanoes, so it has mountain ranges, gorges, lakes, hot springs, and magnificent landscapes created by millions of years of Earth's movement. Mount Aso (Kumamoto Prefecture) and Sakurajima (Kagoshima Prefecture) are two of Japan's most active volcanoes. Thanks to its intense volcanic and geothermal activity, Kyushu also accounts for approximately 35% of Japan's total hot spring (onsen) sources, with famous hot spring towns like Beppu and Yufuin. Much of the island is covered by hills and giant caldera formations created after ancient eruptions. In particular, it's a land steeped in Japanese mythology. There are places where you can not only admire the scenery but also feel like you're stepping into an ancient tale. Initially, I planned to use the Seishun 18 Kippu pass to explore Kyushu by local trains, traveling through different regions. However, after researching, I discovered that the most beautiful places in Kyushu are often not located near train stations or with convenient public transportation. The Takachiho Gorge, mountainous areas, valleys, and volcanic landscapes are often located deep within nature, requiring additional local buses or taxis for transportation, making it quite complicated. Therefore, I chose a day tour with private transportation. If you're looking for a more unique Japan than Kyoto, Tokyo, or Osaka, try Kyushu. You might discover a Japan you've never known before.

Whenever you visit Fukuoka, AI always suggests a day trip to Yanagawa and Dazaifu by train. You can get a rail pass that covers both spots in one go, so naturally, I didn't miss out. Honestly, though, it felt like a total tourist trap. I first took the train to Dazaifu. The most famous spot there is that architecturally unique Starbucks, but it's really just for snapping photos outside. The drinks and food aren't anything special, the crowds are overwhelming, and there weren't any souvenirs worth buying. Then I headed over to Yanagawa to try their famous steamed eel rice, but it wasn't exactly mind-blowing either. Aside from the canal boat ride, there are absolutely no other unique attractions to see. I was so disappointed. Does everyone agree?

From Fukuoka to a day of cute cafés, beautiful scenery & hot springs ♨️🇯🇵 If you only have one day in Kyushu, can you visit both Yufuin and Beppu? Yes — but it will be a very full day! 😆 Our plan was to start from Fukuoka in the morning, explore the charming streets of Yufuin, continue to Beppu in the afternoon, visit a steaming volcanic “hell,” and finish the day relaxing in a Japanese onsen. Yufuin and Beppu have very different personalities. Yufuin is known for its picturesque streets, cafés, boutiques and Lake Kinrin, while Beppu is famous for its spectacular geothermal activity and hot springs. ([Japan Activity][2]) · -- 🚆 8:20 AM — Fukuoka Train Station Our adventure began early in the morning! Fukuoka → Yufuin 🚆 The train journey itself is part of the experience. If you are taking the Yufuin no Mori, it is worth reserving seats in advance because it is a popular sightseeing train. ([Bunky Chow][3]) ☕ Grab a quick breakfast or coffee before boarding. Travel mood: Sleepy eyes → excited heart → Japan adventure begins! 😂 · -- 🌸 9:30 AM — Arrive at Yufuin Station Welcome to Yufuin! Yufuin is a beautiful onsen town located at the foot of Mt. Yufu. Its main sightseeing route runs from Yufuin Station through Yunotsubo Kaido toward Lake Kinrin, roughly 1.5 km. ([Japan Guide][4]) The streets are filled with: 🍰 Dessert shops 🍵 Japanese cafés 🧸 Character stores 🍡 Local snacks 🎁 Souvenir shops It's the kind of place where you keep saying: > “Just one more shop!” 😂 · -- 🐱 10:30 AM — Totoro Specialty Shop Our first cute-shopping stop! For Studio Ghibli / Totoro fans, Yufuin is a dream. The shop is filled with adorable character merchandise, making it almost impossible to leave empty-handed. 🥹 🌳 Totoro 🐈⬛ Jiji 👒 Kiki 🏰 Ghibli characters 📸 Photo tip: The exterior and surrounding Yunotsubo streets are also great for photographs. · -- 🥔 11:00 AM — Yufuin Kinsho Croquettes Yufuin Kinsho Croquettes Yufuin Kinsho Croquettes Address: 1481-7 Yufuincho Kawakami, Yufu, Oita 879-5102, Japan Phone: +81977853053 Time for a famous Yufuin snack! 🥔 Kinsho Croquette Crispy on the outside and warm and creamy inside — exactly what you want while walking around Yufuin. The shop is located along the popular shopping area and currently opens from around 9:00 AM, although closing times vary by day. Travel rule: Walking + Japanese street food = calories don't count. 😆 · -- 🌺 11:30 AM — Yufuin Floral Village Yufuin Floral Village Yufuin Floral Village Next stop: Yufuin Floral Village. This little European-style shopping area feels almost like stepping into a storybook. 🏡 Cute buildings 🦉 Animal-themed attractions 🎁 Character shops 📸 Instagram-worthy corners It is located along the route toward Lake Kinrin, making it convenient to explore while walking through Yufuin. ([Bunky Chow][3]) · -- # 🥜 12:30 PM — Snoopy Chaya Yufuinten SNOOPY Chaya Yufuinten SNOOPY Chaya Yufuinten Calling all Snoopy lovers! 🐶🤎 This is one of the cutest stops in Yufuin. The SNOOPY Chaya combines a Japanese tea-house atmosphere with Snoopy-themed food, desserts and merchandise. Current listed opening hours are approximately 9:30 AM–5:30 PM, making our lunchtime visit convenient. 📸 Don't forget to take photos before eating! · -- # 🌿 1:30 PM — Lake Kinrin Lake Kinrin Lake Kinrin ) Finally, we reached one of Yufuin's most famous landmarks: 金鱗湖 — Lake Kinrin The lake is surrounded by walking paths, cafés and small shops, with a torii gate standing in the water. ([Visit Oita][1]) The scenery changes with the seasons, and on cool mornings the warm spring water can create a beautiful mist over the lake. 🌳 Walk around the lake 📸 Take photos ⛩️ Look for the torii 🏔️ Enjoy the Mt. Yufuin and Beppu are relatively close, but doing both in one day requires careful timing. Important: allow enough time for the transfer because traffic and public-transport schedules can affect the itinerary. · -- # 🔵 4:40 PM — Umi Jigoku Umi Jigoku Welcome to one of Beppu's most famous geothermal attractions! 🌊 Umi Jigoku — 海地獄 The name means “Sea Hell”, referring to its striking blue hot-spring water. The attraction currently lists opening hours of 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, so arriving at 4:40 PM gives you a very short visit. 👉 I would strongly recommend moving this stop earlier if possible. · -- # 🚶 5:10 PM — Walk around Yukemuri Street ) After Umi Jigoku, take a walk around the Kannawa/Yukemuri area. This is where Beppu's hot-spring character really comes alive. ♨️ Steam rising from the streets 🏠 Traditional houses 🌫️ Hot-spring vapour everywhere 🍳 Food cooked with geothermal steam Beppu is famous for its abundance of hot springs, and the geothermal steam is part of the city's everyday atmosphere. · -- # ♨️ 5:50 PM — Hyotan Onsen Hyotan Onsen . Time to relax! 🛁 After walking almost the whole day, nothing feels better than soaking in a Japanese hot spring. Hyotan Onsen is a day-use onsen in the Kannawa area and currently lists opening hours of 9:00 AM–midnight, so an evening visit fits nicely into the itinerary. The perfect ending: Walk → eat → walk → explore → walk → ONsen! 😂 💡 Remember to bring or purchase a small towel, and follow Japanese onsen etiquette. · -- # 🚆 8:45 PM — Return to Fukuoka After a long but unforgettable day, it was time to head back to Fukuoka. By this point: 👣 Feet = tired 📱 Phone = full of photos 🛍️ Shopping bag = full 🍡 Stomach = happy ♨️ Body = relaxed ❤️ Memories = priceless · -- # 🗺️ Our One-Day Route Fukuoka ⬇️ 🚆 Yufuin Station ⬇️ 🐱 Totoro Shop ⬇️ 🥔 Kinsho Croquette ⬇️ 🌺 Yufuin Floral Village ⬇️ 🐶 Snoopy Chaya ⬇️ 🌿 Lake Kinrin ⬇️ 🚌/🚆 Beppu ⬇️ 🌊 Umi Jigoku ⬇️ ♨️ Yukemuri Street ⬇️ 🛁 Hyotan Onsen ⬇️ 🚆 Fukuoka · -- 💕 Final Thoughts Yufuin and Beppu may be famous for completely different reasons, but combining them creates a wonderful “cute Japan + nature + food + hot spring” day. Yufuin gave us the pretty streets, character shops, cafés and Lake Kinrin, while Beppu ended the journey with volcanic scenery, steam-filled streets and an onsen experience. Official Oita tourism also presents Yufuin and Beppu as complementary destinations centred around scenery and onsen culture. That gives you more time for photos before ending the day at Hyotan Onsen. ♨️✨

When steaming hot spring water blends with crisp fresh water... magic happens! 😍 📍 Kinrin Lake (金鱗湖) How to get there: Just a 25-min stroll from Yufuin Station—totally doable and super scenic! Pro tip: Head over early in the morning to dodge the crowds and catch that dreamy mist hovering over the lake. 🌫️✨ There’s a cozy café right beside the lake where you can sip your coffee with THAT view 😍. But be ready—it fills up fast, so make sure to snag your seat early! Kinrin Lake is open all day, but the early hours are where the real magic happens. Save this for your Yufuin adventure and get those zen lake vibes! #japannature #japantrip #japan #travel2026 #fukuoka

This was my first time trying this Japanese individual hotpot spot, and it was a total surprise! My mom and I each got a set meal, and the value is unbeatable—starting at just $68. No wonder there’s always a line! ⭐️Recommended Sets: 🔸Premium Beef Chuck Set (200g) You get to try three types of beef chuck in one go, and it's absolutely fantastic! ✅Kyushu Wagyu Beef Chuck: Rich marbling and incredibly tender. ✅Australian Wagyu Beef Chuck: Intense, robust beef flavor. ✅US Angus Beef Chuck: Also very tender and soft. 🔸Beef Short Plate & Pork Shoulder Set (200g) This set features two meats: fatty, melt-in-your-mouth beef short plate and firm, clean-tasting US pork shoulder. So satisfying! 🥗Both sets come with a vegetable platter, a main dish, and an appetizer. The vegetables are super fresh, especially the Chinese cabbage and shiitake mushrooms. You can even upgrade to local farm-fresh veggies for just $9. For the main, you can upgrade to starch noodles (kuzukiri) or Sanuki udon. The appetizer was a chilled spinach with sesame dressing—the rich sauce was so appetizing and refreshing. I really loved the open kitchen concept. All the meat is sliced fresh to order, and the presentation is stunning. 🍹To finish, the Kyoho Grape Oolong Tea was perfect for cutting through the richness. We also had the Shinshu Apple Juice, which was crisp and not too sweet.

🥐 A small, charming bakery I stumbled upon years ago has transformed into a major hotspot. This time, I actually had to wait in line to get my fix, but seeing its success felt like reuniting with an old friend, so I didn't mind the wait at all. 🥐 Its newfound popularity is thanks to several appearances on Japanese television. It’s been featured as a must-visit Kokura bakery on popular Fukuoka programs like "Trip! North Kyushu" and "Daily Bread Chronicles." It seems it first gained traction on Instagram for its incredibly photogenic pastries. 🥐 Right at the entrance, a poster for their signature item practically lures you in. Unfortunately, that specific treat only goes on sale at 3 PM, so since I visited in the morning, I missed out ㅠㅠ. I stuck to my usual favorites this time, but on my next visit, I’m definitely going for the seasonal sandwiches, the mentaiko baguette, and those famous cream croissants. 🥐 I really hope this place stays in the neighborhood and keeps baking delicious treats for a long time. ⛳️ ✅ Address: 1F, 2 Chome-3-4 Uomachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka 802-0006 ✅ Hours: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM ✅ Note: Cream croissants are sold starting from 3 PM (limited to 50 pieces)

🍞 A local soul food favorite for over 70 years, Shiroya Bakery (シロヤベーカリー) was founded in 1950 and has been a beloved neighborhood staple ever since. 🚉 Located right at the entrance of the arcade in front of the station, it’s incredibly easy to find. Lately, it's been difficult to buy bread here because of the long lines, but I was thrilled to find no wait today! I happily picked up some of my favorite nostalgic treats. 🍞 The absolute #1 star of the menu is the Sunny Pan (サニーパン). It features a slightly chewy, French-style exterior filled with sweet condensed milk, creating a perfect "sweet and salty" harmony. Then there’s the Omelet (オムレット), which is famous for its adorable bite-sized shape. It consists of a soft sponge cake folded over light whipped cream, making it a breeze to eat in one go. Nowadays, they are sold in convenient 5-piece packs. I also saw the Surfing Sand (サーフィンサンド), which features Baumkuchen sandwiched between slices of bread. I haven't tried this one yet, but I’ll definitely give it a go next time. ⛳️ Shiroya Bakery Kokura Store ✅ Address: 2 Chome-6-14 Kyomachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka 802-0002 Japan ✅ Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM ✅ Note: Takeout only; no dine-in space. Japan’s train system is one of the easiest ways to travel around the country — once you understand what you’re actually looking at. The mistake I see first-time visitors make is assuming every Japanese train works the same way. It doesn’t. Before you tap your IC card, jump on a platform or book a Shinkansen, save these tips. 🇯🇵🚆 1. Not Every Train Is a Shinkansen For short distances, you’ll usually use: 🚃 Local trains — stop at most or all stations 🚃 Rapid trains — skip some smaller stations 🚃 Limited Express — faster intercity service and may require an additional surcharge 🚄 Shinkansen — high-speed intercity travel 🚇 Subway — especially useful inside major cities So if Google Maps says “train,” that doesn’t necessarily mean bullet train. Different services have different fares, stops and reservation requirements. 2. Learn the Difference Between JR and Private Railways This is one of the biggest sources of confusion in Tokyo and Osaka. You may see: JR Tokyo Metro Toei Subway Hankyu Hanshin Keihan …and many others. They are different railway operators. The fastest route isn’t always operated by JR, and having a JR Pass doesn’t mean every train you see is automatically included. Always check which operator and line you’re actually taking. 3. An IC Card Will Make Your Life Much Easier For everyday travel, an IC card such as Suica, PASMO or ICOCA can save a huge amount of time. Tap in. Take the train. Tap out. You can also use compatible IC cards at many vending machines, convenience stores and station lockers. But don’t assume they work absolutely everywhere. Some areas and forms of transportation don’t accept IC cards, so keep some cash as a backup. 4. Don’t Automatically Buy a Japan Rail Pass This is probably the most important money-saving tip. A nationwide JR Pass isn’t automatically the cheapest option just because you’re visiting Japan. Depending on your itinerary, you might be better with: · Individual tickets · A regional rail pass · IC cards for local transportation · A combination of different options Plan your route first. Choose your pass second. And remember: on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, JR Pass holders need an additional special ticket to use Nozomi trains. 5. Shinkansen ≠ One Single Type of Train On the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen you’ll commonly encounter: 🚄 Nozomi — fastest, fewer stops 🚄 Hikari — more stops 🚄 Kodama — many stops If you’re traveling Tokyo → Kyoto or Tokyo → Osaka, choosing the wrong service can make your journey considerably longer. Don’t just look for the word “Shinkansen.” Check the service name. 6. Your Seat Choice Matters Shinkansen commonly offer: Non-reserved Choose an available seat in the appropriate cars. Reserved You receive an assigned seat. Green Car More spacious, premium seating. Some services are reserved-seat only, so check before you travel. For popular journeys, I personally prefer reserving a seat rather than turning up and hoping. 7. Your Giant Suitcase Can Be a Problem This is the one many tourists discover too late. On certain Shinkansen routes, luggage with total dimensions over 160 cm requires a reservation for a seat with oversized-baggage space. This applies to the: · Tokaido Shinkansen · Sanyo Shinkansen · Kyushu Shinkansen · Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen The reservation itself doesn’t add a separate baggage-space fee, but you need to arrange it ahead of time. If you’re traveling with a large suitcase, check this before boarding, not after arriving at the station. And if you’re moving around Japan with several bags, consider luggage forwarding or station lockers. Japan has extensive “Hands-Free Travel” services specifically designed for this. 8. Don’t Eat the Same Way on Every Train This is a surprisingly useful distinction. 🍱 Shinkansen / long-distance trains: eating is generally fine. 🚇 Local trains / subways: eating is generally avoided. That’s why an ekiben — a boxed train meal — is such a classic part of longer-distance Japanese rail travel. 9. Don’t Block the Platform Japanese stations can get extremely busy. When the train arrives: Let passengers get off first. Then board. Keep your luggage out of the way. Don’t stop directly in front of the ticket gates to reorganize your bags. And on trains, keep conversations quiet and avoid phone calls inside the carriage. Small habits make a huge difference. 10. Check the Train Number — Not Just the Destination This is another easy mistake. Two trains may both say “Kyoto,” but they may: · make different stops · depart from different platforms · have different reservation rules · take different amounts of time Before boarding, check: Destination + service name + departure time + platform + train number Five seconds of checking can save you a very stressful journey. ⸻ 🇯🇵 My Japan Train Cheat Sheet Around Tokyo/Osaka → Subway / local / private railway Short regional trip → Local / Rapid / Limited Express Tokyo → Kyoto → Tokaido Shinkansen Tokyo → Osaka → Tokaido Shinkansen Tokyo → Hiroshima → Tokaido + Sanyo Shinkansen Everyday city transport → IC card Long-distance journey → Compare individual ticket vs regional/nationwide pass Huge suitcase → Check oversized-baggage rules BEFORE boarding Popular Shinkansen journey → Consider reserving ahead ⸻ 🚆 The biggest lesson? Japan’s train system isn’t actually difficult. The difficult part is assuming everything works the same way. Once you understand the difference between local trains, private railways, JR, Limited Express and Shinkansen — and once you know when to use an IC card, when to reserve and when to check luggage rules — traveling around Japan becomes much less intimidating. Save this before your Japan trip. 🇯🇵 #JapanTravel #JapanTrain #JapanTrains #Shinkansen #JapanTravelTips #TokyoTravel #KyotoTravel #OsakaTravel #JapanItinerary #TravelTips

Inasa for a breathtaking night view of the city and Nagasaki Bay ✨ On the other hand, the city is steeped in history at Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum. It's a place that offers stunning views, rich culture, delicious food, and stories that add profound meaning to your journey 🌊

#photovsrealitytravel Before checking out Japan's famous autumn and winter fireworks displays, I spent hours scrolling through striking long-exposure photographs online. Pictures usually frame massive, perfectly symmetrical floral bursts blooming in solitary brilliance against a pitch-black sky, making the entire experience look like a quiet, flawless digital painting. Stepping into the bustling festival grounds and riverbanks in person, the reality was a high-octane, incredibly immersive symphony of sound, color, and community energy. The biggest surprise was realizing just how physically powerful and tactile the environment truly is. Online images flatten the spectacle, but standing near a mountain-ringed bay like Atami or listening to the acoustic shockwaves echo off the hills around Lake Suwa reveals a bone-rattling force that digital screens cannot capture. Instead of watching in isolated silence, you are shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of excited spectators, wrapped in heavy jackets against the crisp autumn air, smelling street-food vendors grilling snacks nearby. Photos also fail to convey the careful logistics and vibrant energy required to experience these shows. Whether you are navigating the tightly ticketed zones of the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival, securing a spot along the Yodogawa Riverbank in Osaka, or catching the nightly boat-launched display over Lake Toya, the atmosphere pulses with collective anticipation. It is vastly louder, much more crowded, and infinitely more atmospheric than any static postcard suggests. Have you ever stood beneath a roaring fireworks display where the thundering sound bouncing off the surrounding mountains or harbor completely took your breath away? 🎆 Shizuoka — Atami Sea Fireworks Festival Remaining 2026 dates: Sept 13, Oct 12, Oct 25, Nov 8, Nov 23, Dec 6, Dec 25 (plus Feb 21, 2027) | 8:20–8:40 PM | Atami Bay Atami runs fireworks roughly 15 times a year — one of the most frequent schedules in the country. Around 5,000 shells launch over a bay ringed by hills on three sides, which bounce the sound back for an unusually loud, immersive effect. Easy to combine with a hot-spring stay any time of year. 🎆 Osaka — Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival (38th edition) October 17 (Sat), 7:00–8:00 PM | Yodogawa Riverbank, Juso side Now permanently shifted to October (originally moved for the Osaka-Kansai Expo, then kept in the autumn slot). Around 500,000 spectators typically attend to see roughly 20,000 shells, including wide Star Mine bursts that span the width of the river. Paid seats run ¥5,000–¥28,000 and go fast; the Umeda-side riverbank is closed to viewers entirely. 🎆 Tokyo — Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival October 24 (Sat), 5:30–7:00 PM | Offshore of Harumi Pier, Tokyo Bay Returning after an 11-year hiatus to mark Chuo Ward's and Minato Ward's 80th anniversaries. About 12,000 fireworks launch from the water against the Tokyo skyline and Rainbow Bridge. This event is strictly ticketed — no sidewalk viewing, no same-day sales — with roughly 108,000 seats spread across 21 designated venues in Chuo, Minato, and Koto wards. 🎆 Hyogo — Minato HANABI (Kobe), 5th anniversary October 19–23 (Mon–Fri), 6:30–6:50 PM nightly | Meriken Park, Kobe Five consecutive evenings of concentrated, music-and-laser-choreographed fireworks over Kobe's harbor — about 20 minutes each night. Viewing from Meriken Park is free; reserved seating on Shinko Pier No. 1 costs ¥2,200. A good choice if you want something short and family-friendly rather than a multi-hour event. 🎆 Hyogo — Inagawa Fireworks Festival November 7 (Sat) | Inagawa Riverbed, Kawanishi City About 4,000 fireworks along the river — a smaller, less crowded autumn option near Osaka/Kobe. 🎆 Ibaraki — Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition (95th edition) November 7 (Sat), 5:30–8:00 PM | Sakuragawa Riverbank, near Gakuen Ohashi Bridge One of Japan's three great fireworks competitions, alongside Omagari and Nagaoka — and the only one held in late autumn, when clearer skies make for especially crisp viewing. About 20,000 fireworks across three judged categories: Star Mine, 10-inch shells, and Creative Fireworks. Paid seats are allocated by an online lottery with mailed tickets, so plan ahead. A backup date (Nov 14) applies in bad weather. 🎆 Nagano — Lake Suwa National New Fireworks Competition (Finals) October 31 (Sat) | Lake Suwa The finals of a competition whose preliminary rounds ran through September; fireworks launch from platforms on the lake, with the surrounding mountains amplifying the sound. 🎆 Nagasaki — Huis Ten Bosch, Kyushu's Largest Fireworks Festival (13th edition) November 14 (Sat), 6:45–8:30 PM | Huis Ten Bosch, Sasebo About 22,000 fireworks — the largest autumn display in western Japan — set against the park's Dutch-style canals and windmills, with 30 top pyrotechnicians competing in a "One-Shaku-Dama" shell contest. Park admission includes the show. 🎆 Hokkaido — Lake Tōya Long-Run Fireworks Festival (45th edition) Nightly through October 31, 8:45–9:05 PM | Toyako Onsen Lakeside Still running as of today — about 450 fireworks every single night since late April, launched from a boat that moves along the shoreline so the view shifts night to night. No need to plan around a single date; if you're staying in Toyako Onsen any night before Oct 31, the show comes to you, free.

Japan by train can look intimidating before your first trip. JR. Private railways. Subways. Local trains. Limited Express. Shinkansen. IC cards. Reserved seats. Non-reserved seats. And then there are approximately 47 different signs telling you where to stand. 😂 But once you understand the basic system, travelling around Japan becomes surprisingly straightforward. Here’s the simple version I wish every first-time visitor had before arriving: 🚆 1. LOCAL TRAINS = GET AROUND THE CITY These are your everyday trains. Think Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other urban areas. They usually make more stops and are perfect for shorter journeys. You’ll encounter JR lines, subway systems and private railway companies depending on the city. 🚄 2. SHINKANSEN = TRAVEL BETWEEN MAJOR CITIES This is the famous bullet train. The major routes include: Tokaido: Tokyo → Nagoya → Kyoto → Shin-Osaka Sanyo: Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima → Hakata Tohoku: Tokyo → Sendai → Morioka → Shin-Aomori Hokkaido: Shin-Aomori → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Hokuriku: Tokyo → Nagano → Kanazawa → Tsuruga Joetsu: Tokyo → Niigata Kyushu: Hakata → Kagoshima-Chuo There are also the Akita, Yamagata and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen routes. So if your itinerary is: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka you’re basically looking at the Tokaido Shinkansen. 🎫 3. IC CARD = YOUR EVERYDAY FRIEND Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and other compatible IC cards make short-distance travel much easier. Tap in. Ride. Tap out. They can also be used at many convenience stores, vending machines and lockers. But don’t assume an IC card works literally everywhere — some transport services and areas don’t accept them. Look for the IC symbol. 💺 4. SHINKANSEN SEATS You’ll generally see: NON-RESERVED Choose an available seat in the appropriate car. RESERVED You get an assigned seat. GREEN CAR More space and a more premium experience. Some Shinkansen services are reserved-seat only, so check the specific train before travelling. 🧳 5. BIG SUITCASE? PAY ATTENTION. This is one of the things tourists often discover too late. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, luggage with total dimensions over 160 cm requires a seat with oversized-baggage space to be reserved in advance. So if you’re travelling with a huge suitcase: CHECK YOUR BAGGAGE BEFORE BOOKING YOUR SEAT. It can save you a lot of hassle at the station. 🎟️ 6. DO YOU NEED A JAPAN RAIL PASS? Don’t automatically assume you do. This is one of the biggest Japan train myths. Compare: Point-to-point tickets vs. Regional rail passes vs. Nationwide Japan Rail Pass If you’re mainly travelling Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, a nationwide pass isn’t automatically the obvious choice. The right option depends on your exact route and how much long-distance JR travel you’re doing. 🍱 7. YES, YOU CAN EAT ON THE SHINKANSEN Long-distance trains such as the Shinkansen are different from crowded city trains. Buying an ekiben at the station and eating during the journey is part of the experience. On local and subway trains, however, eating is generally best avoided. 📱 8. CHECK THE ROUTE BEFORE YOU LEAVE Japan has multiple railway companies operating in the same cities. So don’t just look at the train name. Check: Station → Line → Direction → Train type → Platform → Destination Apps such as Google Maps, Japan Travel by NAVITIME and Jorudan can help with routes, fares and schedules. 🇯🇵 THE EASY WAY TO THINK ABOUT JAPAN RAIL Around the city → JR / subway / private railway Between major cities → Shinkansen / Limited Express Short everyday journeys → IC card Long-distance route → Compare individual tickets + regional/national passes Once you understand those four things, Japan’s train system suddenly makes a lot more sense. And honestly? The train system is one of the reasons Japan is so rewarding to travel independently. You don’t need to understand every railway line in the country. You just need to understand the route you’re taking today. 📌 Save this before your Japan trip.

Some Japanese cities are famous for their glittering neon skyscrapers. Others are known for endless historic temples and massive tourist crowds. Kagoshima feels a little different. Tucked away at the sunny southern tip of Kyushu, Kagoshima is a coastal city with palm-lined streets, a steaming active volcano rising straight out of the bay, and a much more relaxed, tropical atmosphere. For me, the best part was simply being able to slow down and look across the water at the volcano without rushing from one crowded train station to another. 🌋 The Volcano Is the Main Attraction The first thing you'll notice is the dramatic silhouette of Sakurajima constantly puffing smoke into the sky. On a sunny day, the deep blue waters of Kinko Bay look incredibly crisp, contrasting against the dark volcanic rock and the lush green hills of the city. It's the kind of place where I could easily spend an afternoon doing nothing more than sitting on a bench at Sengan-en garden, walking along the harbor, and enjoying the view. And honestly, the smoking mountain itself already feels like enough of an attraction. ♨️ Don't Skip the Natural Hot Sand Baths If there's one activity I'd recommend, it's taking a short trip down to Ibusuki to try the unique natural hot sand baths. The region is known for its intense geothermal energy, and being buried up to your neck in warm, mineral-rich volcanic sand right on the beach is a great way to experience local relaxation. Depending on the tide and conditions, you may listen to the gentle waves crashing just meters away while the earth's natural heat deep-cleanses your body. For me, feeling that deep, comforting warmth while looking out at the open sea was one of the most memorable parts of the trip. 🤍 🍠 Why I Liked Kagoshima What I enjoyed most was its slow-paced, sunny Southern Kyushu atmosphere. Compared with some of the more hectic and crowded mega-cities in Japan, Kagoshima feels incredibly grounded, spacious, and warm. There aren't endless high-stress shopping districts to tick off. Instead, the days naturally become slower. Wake up. Enjoy a sweet potato pastry or a bowl of rich Kurobuta pork ramen. Stroll through the historic samurai-era gardens. Take the ferry across to the volcano. Relax in a hot spring overlooking the bay. Watch the sunset turn the volcanic smoke into shades of pink. Repeat. And I think that's exactly why Kagoshima works so well for a short, soul-soothing getaway. 🌅 Sunset Over Kinko Bay Don't head indoors too early in the evening. Watching the sun go down behind the city hills, casting a golden-purple glow over Sakurajima and the calm waters of the bay, was one of those simple moments that made the trip feel complete. The waterfront pathways become quieter, the volcano's silhouette sharpens against the pastel sky, and everything suddenly feels much more peaceful. No complicated itinerary needed. 💡 Travel Tips ⛴️ Take the Sakurajima Ferry: The ferry runs 24/7 from the city harbor to the volcano island, making it incredibly cheap and easy to stand right at the base of the active peak. 🥾 Pack a small towel: Kagoshima has free public footbaths (ashi-yu) scattered all over the city and the ferry terminal, perfect for a quick break while exploring. 🍧 Try the Shirokuma ice: Don't leave without tasting their famous "Polar Bear" shaved milk ice, topped with colorful fruits and sweet beans. 🌸 Check the ash forecast: Sakurajima erupts gently almost every day, so locals check the wind direction to see where the volcanic ash will drift—it’s all part of the unique experience! 🚂 Travel via Shinkansen: Kagoshima-Chuo is the final stop on the Kyushu Shinkansen line, making it highly accessible and smooth to reach from Fukuoka or Osaka. 🎒 Don't overplan: Leave plenty of time to just sit by the water, watch the ferry boats glide back and forth, and breathe in the salty sea air. ❤️ Final Thoughts Kagoshima may often be called the "Naples of the Eastern World" because of its bay and volcano. But its real magic lies in its quiet, everyday simplicity. It has fresh coastal air, incredible local food, dramatic natural power, and a slower pace where you don't feel the pressure to constantly be doing something. For me, Kagoshima wasn't about chasing a hectic sightseeing checklist. It was about waking up near the sea, spending time looking across the water at a smoking mountain, and enjoying a few days where life felt a little slower. Sometimes, that's exactly what a holiday should be. 🌋🤍 #kagoshima #sakurajima #visitjapan #kyushutravel #explorejapan #volcanoescape #slowtravel #naturegetaway #hotsprings #southernjapan #travelgram #kagoshimatravelguide

The Yufuin no Mori sightseeing train is an absolute essential for anyone exploring Kyushu! 🌿 I recently took the trip from Beppu to Yufuin, and it definitely lives up to the reputation. A word of advice: this iconic train sells out incredibly fast, especially during peak travel seasons. If you're looking to snag those window seats for the best views (and believe me, you are 😉), be sure to book as early as possible—ideally 30 days before your departure. The journey takes just over an hour, during which you'll be treated to serene countryside views, verdant forests, and stunning mountain landscapes. The train also features retro-style interiors that offer a perfect vintage aesthetic. Plus, here's a bonus: they serve ice cream onboard! 🍦 It's the perfect treat while you soak in the scenery. Pro Tip: Set a reminder to book your tickets exactly one month in advance to secure the best seats, and double-check departure times to ensure a seamless trip. If you're planning a Kyushu adventure, riding the Yufuin no Mori truly feels like living your best life. Enjoy every picturesque moment!

When you're in Fukuoka, there's so much more to do than just eating and shopping—you absolutely cannot miss the zoo experiences here! On this trip, we not only visited the Fukuoka City Zoological & Botanical Garden right in the heart of the city, but we also booked the incredible Jungle Bus tour at Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari. It was the perfect way to enjoy two totally different types of wildlife adventures! 🤩 1️⃣ The Ultimate Thrill! The Jungle Bus Experience 🚌🦁🦓 This was hands down the highlight of the trip! We essentially became the ones being "observed" while the animals roamed freely right outside our windows. We were surrounded by herds of deer and zebras, and we could even feed them directly through the bus windows—the proximity was unreal! We also spotted a family of rhinos lounging on the grass and a majestic pride of lions. Some were cooling off in the shade, others were letting out big yawns, and we even saw some resting behind the rocks. It was such a peaceful yet awe-inspiring sight! This kind of close encounter with wildlife is something both kids and adults will absolutely love! 2️⃣ Pure Serenity! Fukuoka City Zoological & Botanical Garden 🐒🌿 In contrast to the excitement of the Safari, the Fukuoka City Zoological & Botanical Garden offers a much more laid-back vibe. The park is beautifully designed, featuring a "cute animal" area where you can observe otters and capybaras up close, along with many rare birds and primates. Strolling through the lush, green grounds while watching the animals is incredibly relaxing. It’s a perfect spot for families and a great place to snap some photos! 💡 Travel Tips Jungle Bus Reservations: The Jungle Bus is extremely popular, so I highly recommend booking in advance on their official website to avoid long waits or finding out tickets are sold out. Transportation: The Fukuoka City Zoological & Botanical Garden is very accessible via subway. To get to African Safari, it's best to rent a car or join a local day tour. Timing: If you want to visit both in one day, plan for a full day. Start with African Safari in the morning and head back to the city for the Zoological & Botanical Garden in the afternoon. Ready for an animal adventure? Make sure to add both of these spots to your Fukuoka itinerary! ✈️🇯🇵

During this self-guided trip to Fukuoka, I found myself passing through "Hakata Station" quite a bit. Having explored it firsthand, I honestly think first-timers should treat the station itself as a must-visit destination. It’s way more than just a major transport hub where the JR, Shinkansen, and subway lines meet—making it super easy to get around the city or head off to other parts of Kyushu. In my opinion, the best parts to explore are: ✔️ Fukuoka souvenirs ✔️ Hakata delicacies ✔️ Bakeries and desserts ✔️ Department store shopping ✔️ The underground mall and surrounding shopping centers So, if you’re staying nearby or your itinerary takes you through Hakata Station, don’t just squeeze in enough time for your connection. Give yourself a bit extra—you can easily knock out a meal, souvenir hunting, and shopping all in one go. 📍 Hakata Station 📍 1-1 Hakataekichuogai, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka

Oriental Hotel Fukuoka 📍Located at Hakata Station in Fukuoka, the heart of Kyushu's transportation network! 🚄Whether heading south to Kumamoto and Kagoshima, east to Beppu and Oita, or even shopping in Tenjin and Nakasu districts, Hakata Station is the hub of hubs! So, for this trip to Fukuoka, I decisively chose this hotel with its superb location! 🎯 🏨 **Amazing Location**: Right at the Chikushi Exit (East) of Hakata Station, directly accessible by subway from the airport, and super convenient by JR from other cities in Kyushu. The reception is on the 2nd floor, offering multilingual service, so you don't have to worry about communication issues! 👌 🎁 **Hidden Perks**: Free photo taking and printing at the reception 📸, a welcome drink 🥤, and complimentary late-night snacks after 9 PM—soba noodles and wine 🍷—so thoughtful! There's also a small garden on the 5th floor of the hotel, a great place to relax and enjoy the view~🌿 💡 **Why stay here again next time I'm in Fukuoka? Three reasons!** 1️⃣ **Early Check-in**: Japanese hotels usually have a 3 PM check-in time, but this hotel allows early check-in for registered members! Take a break before shopping to recharge your energy—so thoughtful! 😭 2️⃣ **Absolutely Amazing Breakfast**: Freshly squeezed orange juice🍊 (one cup uses 4 oranges, it feels like the hotel is losing money on breakfast!), plus donuts🍩, mini burgers🍔, Eggs Benedict🥚, and Fukuoka specialties: mentaiko (spicy cod roe), Takenoya special bread, aiyu jelly, sea bream miso, Itoshima green onion tamagoyaki, chicken rice, Hakata fried chicken, Hakata tonkotsu ramen🍜… You can eat until you're stuffed for breakfast! 🤤 3️⃣ **Location**: Excellent transportation access, super convenient for shopping in the Hakata Station area. The subway and JR lines are right outside, making it easy to get anywhere! 🛍️ In short, highly recommended! For those traveling to Fukuoka, this is the place to go! 💥 #FukuokaHotelRecommendation #HakataStationOrientalHotel #FukuokaTravel #KyushuTravel

Saga is a serene prefecture in Kyushu, perfect for a slow travel experience ✨. It features historic old towns, natural beauty, and a world-renowned pottery culture. Stop by Arita to explore the town of porcelain before soaking in the retro atmosphere at Yutoku Inari Shrine, a striking red shrine nestled in the heart of nature ⛩️🏮. Another must-visit spot is Takeo Onsen, an ancient hot spring town filled with cozy cafes and local delicacies to enjoy along the way. Saga might not be flashy, but the more you slow down and explore, the more you'll feel the peaceful charm of Kyushu 🤍.

Every time I visit Macau, I make a special point of stopping by Goat Bakers whenever I have the chance. Named after the acronym "Greatest Of All Time," this bakery has become a permanent fixture on my Macau must-visit list. Their Japanese Ran-oh Egg Tarts and signature Flower Cups are the kind of treats you taste once and remember for a lifetime. I’ve visited twice—once for a takeout haul and once to sit down and savor them with coffee. Every visit is incredibly satisfying. Signature Must-Tries: Japanese Ran-oh Egg Tart (Approx. $12 each) Filled with premium "Ran-oh" eggs from Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, and French cream, the custard is exceptionally rich in flavor. The tart shell is perfectly layered—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The caramelized surface has a slight char, and the first bite gives a satisfying "crunch." The sweetness is just right and not at all cloying. It is truly in a different league from your average Portuguese tart. Cheese Flower Cup / Matcha Flower Cup (Approx. $38–$40) This is the real star of the show! Flaky mille-feuille pastry is rolled into a rose shape, with a rich molten cheese (or matcha cheese) center. It’s significantly larger than a standard egg tart. The crust is incredibly crispy and shatters with every bite, while the filling is smooth with a subtle lactic tang—a perfect, layered balance of sweet and sour. The matcha version has a refreshing tea aroma, while the original cheese is a timeless classic. I’d recommend sharing one between two people or pairing it with coffee to balance the richness. The shop also sells other pastries and canelés, but I find myself coming back for these two every single time. The storefront is small with a minimalist, aesthetic vibe and a few seats for dining in. Walking away with their "Goat Bakers – Greatest of all time" paper bag makes for a great photo opportunity. I even brought my plushies (Conan, Groot, and a little avocado) along for photos—the whole atmosphere is so therapeutic. 📸🌟 Address: Goat Bakers (Taipa Branch) Kam Sau Kok, 72 Rua do Regedor, Taipa, Macau (Some records list it as 80 G/F Shop C; it’s in the same area, near the side entrance of Luso-Chinese Primary School). Opening Hours: Roughly 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM daily (Best to double-check before heading out). How to get there? (Taipa Branch) The easiest way is to head toward the Rua do Cunha area first: Take a bus to "Rua do Cunha" or "Escola Luso-Chinesa da Taipa" stops. Common routes: 11, 15, 22, 28A, 30, 33, 34, etc. (It’s very easy to reach from Praça de Ferreira do Amaral or the Border Gate on the Macau Peninsula). After getting off, walk for a few minutes along Rua do Regedor. It’s very close to the Rua do Cunha shopping district, about a 3–5 minute walk. If you are staying at a Cotai resort hotel, you can take a free hotel shuttle to Rua do Cunha and walk from there. By Light Rail: You can go to "Pai Kok Station" or nearby stations and then transfer to a bus or walk. Pro-Tips: · The Macau Peninsula shop gets very crowded and items sell out quickly. The Taipa branch is usually less busy, giving you a better chance of getting what you want. · If you want them piping hot, go shortly after opening or dine in at the shop. · They make great souvenirs, and the paper bags are very stylish. In short, if you want to try unique egg tarts and creative pastries in Macau, Goat Bakers is absolutely worth a dedicated trip. I’ll definitely be back on my next visit to Macau!

If you’re a first-timer heading to Japan, I highly recommend visiting Beppu in Oita Prefecture. It’s a relaxing city that’s easy to navigate, offering a perfect blend of coastal vibes, hot springs, and stunning scenery all in one trip! Getting there from Fukuoka Airport is a breeze—just hop on a direct bus to Beppu using the SUNQ Pass. It’s super beginner-friendly, and I fell in love with the city the moment I arrived. 🌊♨️ As a seaside town with a charming harbor, the big highlight here is the “Hells of Beppu.” Personally, I’d suggest visiting Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) for its gorgeous cobalt-blue water. Just one pond is enough if you want to keep things chill without rushing to see them all. 😂 Another must-see spot is Kifunejou (きふねじょう). This hilltop viewpoint offers a panoramic look at Beppu, with steam from the hot springs rising across the city. It’s an iconic view that truly captures the essence of Beppu. ♨️ Looking for an easy, stress-free destination for your first trip to Japan? Make sure to add Beppu to your Fukuoka itinerary! For those who have been to Beppu before, which spots would you recommend to newcomers? ......................
