A superb destination for outdoor exploration and extreme challenges. After our flight arrived in Ajaccio, we rented a car and drove to Cargèse, a journey of about two and a half hours. We stopped at a restaurant called "Petit Peri" along the way, where we had lunch. The food was delicious, reasonably priced, and the environment was comfortable and reassuring – highly recommended! Upon arriving in Cargèse, our rented apartment was near the coast, within walking distance of the beach. The bright sun, azure sky, and crystal-clear water created a breathtaking scene. Soaking in the cool water on a hot summer day was incredibly pleasant. The next day, we found a dive center and enjoyed diving together. Since the dive center did not provide life jackets, this activity is not recommended for those who are not good swimmers or divers. However, if you love diving 🏊🏻, it's definitely worth a try (diving costs approximately €60 per person). After diving in the morning, we returned to our accommodation for a short rest before setting off on a hike ⛰. The round trip took about three hours. The initial path was relatively flat, but it became quite steep near the summit, so hiking boots are recommended. Despite the fatigue, the views from the top were absolutely stunning – well worth it. On the third day, we traveled to Calvi and stayed in an old, dual-use military and civilian castle 🏰 (Calvi Castle, Citadelle de Calvi). The scenery there was breathtaking, a beautiful coastal city. We strolled around the castle that day and then went for another swim at the beach 🏊🏻♀️. On the fourth day, we drove to L'Île-Rousse, where we strolled around, enjoyed seafood, hiked, and sang in the sun. (The town sells local jewelry made of coral.) En route, we decided to stop by the town of Lumio. While not famous, Lumio is full of delightful little moments. It boasts numerous charming shops and hiking trails (moderately challenging, suitable for beginners). I even bought some honey in a shop; the honey here has a unique flavor (rich, slightly bitter yet subtly sweet), which locals say is a characteristic of the local honey. Afterwards, we concluded our coastal city tour and headed to Corte. Nestled deep in the mountains, Corte offers a unique beauty despite the lack of a vast ocean view. Next, we went to Venaco, an extremely tiny town. If you're looking for something special, it's the perfect choice if you love natural scenery and enjoy hiking in the mountains. We hiked to a nearby waterfall, played in the water, and thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility. On our last day, we returned to Ajaccio and explored the city. Our hotel was also very close to the airport, just a 30-minute walk away. During this trip north, I didn't see a single Asian face; I was practically the only Asian traveler I encountered. Perhaps this is influenced by recommendations on Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform), where most tourists seem to prefer the south over the north.

Let’s start with the basics: the location is stunning, no doubt. The old town is built right on the edge of these massive 70-meter white limestone cliffs looking over the Mediterranean. If you like history and old buildings, the medieval vibes here are legit—the town dates all the way back to 830 AD. But here’s the reality: the cobblestone streets are uneven, crowded, and the restaurants in the main tourist squares are overpriced. Do yourself a favor and wander into the quieter side alleys if you want a decent meal without the tourist tax. Now, the main event: the King of Aragon’s Staircase. It’s 187 steps carved directly into the cliff face at a steep 45-degree angle. Here is how the process actually goes: you have to buy a ticket to go down, they hand you a helmet for safety, and then you start the descent. Going down is fine, but remember—what goes down must climb back up. Climbing those steep, narrow steps back up in the heat is brutal. If you have knee issues or hate heights, skip it. You can get equally good views of the cliffs for free by just walking along the hiking paths at the top. Some practical tips if you plan to visit: 1. Wear real shoes. I saw people trying to climb the steps in flip-flops, which is just asking for an accident. The stones are slippery. 2. Buy your water at a supermarket before you head up to the old town. The shops near the cliffs charge ridiculous prices. 3. If you want the best views of the cliffs without the sweat, just take one of the boat tours from the marina. It’s much easier on the legs.
