The Lechtaler High Trail delivered the most challenging and rewarding hike of my life! This 6-day, 88.4km traverse along the main ridge showcases the incredible rock diversity of these mountains—black, white, grey, red, yellow, and blue all revealing the geological story beneath my feet .
I started from Kaisers, following trail 642 through the Bodenalpe to the Leutkircher Hütte at 2,262 meters . The climb offered varied terrain—gentle streams, short steep forest sections, wooden planks over boggy ground, and finally spectacular mountain views where marmots whistled warnings . Day two brought the legendary Augsburger Höhenweg, a demanding ridge traverse requiring absolute surefootedness and a head for heights .

116 Routes & Endless Powder: Ski Touring Paradise in the Lechtaler Alpen
#skitrip
The Lechtaler Alpen completely exceeded my ski touring expectations! With 116 marked routes, this Tyrolean region ranks among the most versatile ski touring destinations in the entire Alps . The variety is staggering—from gentle beginner ascents to challenging 3,000-meter summit tours through untouched powder fields .
I tackled the classic Roter Stein tour from Fernpass through the wild-romantic Kälbertal, a 12.5km route requiring good technique and safe conditions . The solitude was surreal—standing at 2,366 meters, surrounded by absolute silence just five kilometers from the nearest lifts, I felt completely alone in the best possible way .

Ski Arlberg (St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben)
#skitrip
You haven't experienced après-ski until you’ve been to the MooserWirt. By 3:30 PM, the 'Final Countdown' blares, and thousands of people are dancing on tables. The staff here are superhuman—seeing them carry trays of 12 steins and Jägerbombs through a mosh pit of ski boots is a sport in itself. The vibe is 100% Austrian 'Schlager' music and pure chaos. Just a warning: you still have to ski the last 500 meters down to the village in the dark. It’s a 'human slalom' through other revelers, which is either the best or worst part of the day depending on how much Schnapps you’ve had!

Ski Arlberg (St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben)

I’m a solid intermediate, and St. Anton humbled me. A 'Blue' run here would be a 'Black' in almost any French or American resort. The home runs (especially Blue 1) get notoriously 'mogully' and 'soupy' by 2:00 PM because everyone is funnelling down to the bars. If you aren't a confident skier, the end of the day can be quite stressful. My advice? Take the Galzigbahn gondola back down the mountain at the end of the day. There’s no shame in it, and it saves your knees for the next day

Ski Arlberg (St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben)
#skitrip
People obsess over Japan, but the Arlberg is the snow pocket of the Alps. Because of its unique position, it catches storms from every direction. We had a 'White Week' in January 2026 where it dumped two meters. The snow here has a bit more 'body' than Japanese powder, which you need for the steep faces. Exploring the Rendl side (the 'other' mountain across the valley) during a storm is the best move—the trees provide better visibility, and the crowds stay away. It’s the most snow-sure resort in Austria for a reason

If you want to test your mettle, St. Anton is the final boss of European skiing. We spent our days lapping the Valluga and Schindler Kar. The terrain isn't just steep; it's complex and rugged. The 'Run of Fame'—an 85km circuit—is a must-do for the sheer scale of it. But the real magic is the off-piste. We hired a guide for the Valluga North Face; you aren't even allowed on the second cable car with skis unless you’re with a certified guide. It’s a terrifying, beautiful, no-fall-zone descent that deposits you into the Pazieltal valley toward Zürs. It is the most rewarding skiing I’ve ever done

Traveling solo to St. Anton was incredibly easy because it’s so social. I stayed in a hostel-style lodge near the center and met people from all over the world at Basecamp (the bar at the bottom of the Gampen lift). It’s easy to find a group to ski with just by chatting at the bars. The village is compact and walkable, and the train station is right in the center, so I didn't even need a car. It’s high-energy, friendly, and you’re never truly 'alone' because everyone is there for the same two things: big mountains and big beers.

Everyone told me St. Anton wasn't for families, but Nasserein changed my mind. Staying at that end of the village is much quieter, and the nursery slopes there are perfect. The Hopplweg is a 4km 'fairytale' run through the woods that the kids loved. We also did the Gampen Toboggan Run—a 4km sledding track that is lit up at night. It was the highlight of the trip for our 10-year-old. It’s not a 'beginner' mountain, but with the right base (Nasserein) and a good ski school, it’s a magical family destination

St. Anton is the freeride capital of Europe. There are 200km of 'marked but un-patrolled' routes. These aren't groomed, but they are checked for avalanches. This is a huge distinction that allows for a 'backcountry feel' with a safety net. We spent our week lapping the Albona in Stuben—it’s North-facing, so the powder stays cold and light for days. If you love natural hits, wind-lips, and endless bowls, this is your playground. Just always carry your 'transceiver, probe, shovel'—the locals here are serious about safety

The 2026 season marks another year of the seamless connection between St. Anton, Lech, and Zürs. The Flexenbahn gondola is a feat of engineering. We spent a full day doing the 'Run of Fame.' You cover 85km and 18,000 meters of vertical. It’s a journey through different micro-climates and scenery, from the rugged crags of St. Anton to the sophisticated, wide-open bowls of Lech. It’s the best way to see the sheer scale of the Arlberg. Just start early—if you miss the last connection, a taxi back from Lech will cost you €100+!"

⛷️ High Alpine Thrills: The Ultimate 7-Day Ski Safari
#skitrip
This itinerary outlines a week-long experience designed to maximize time on the slopes, blending exhilarating runs with essential mountain relaxation and memorable après-ski. This plan is based in a large, interconnected resort area, such as Les Trois Vallées in France or Ski Arlberg in Austria, offering vast terrain for all levels.
Day 1: Arrival & Gear Check (Half Day)
Arrive at your accommodation, check in, and immediately head to the rental shop for fittings. Spend the late afternoon cruising the gentle 'home run' to get your ski legs back and familiarize yourself with the lower slopes and lift system. End the day with a hearty, traditional Alpine dinner (like fondue or Käsespätzle) and an early night to prepare for the week ahead.
Day 2: Mastering the Mountain (Full Day)
Start with targeted warm-up runs on blue pistes. By late morning, begin exploring the mid-mountain red runs. Focus on technique and endurance. Take lunch at a cozy, sun-drenched mountain refuge or hut, soaking in the panoramic views. Finish the day with a well-earned drink at a vibrant slope-side bar for your first taste of après-ski.
Day 3: Deep Dive & Discovery (Full Day)
Challenge yourself by skiing to a neighboring valley or distant peak within the lift area. This often involves taking a long gondola ride and tackling a steeper black run or a long, ungroomed itinerary. Pack snacks and water. Return via a different, scenic route, ensuring you are back before the last lift closes.
Day 4: Rest and Recovery (Non-Ski Day)
Give your muscles a break. Spend the morning at the resort spa for a massage or enjoy a swim. In the afternoon, try a non-ski activity like tobogganing, snowshoeing, or paragliding for a different perspective of the mountains.
Day 5 & 6: Peak Performance & Off-Piste Prep (Full Days)
These days are for pushing your limits. On Day 5, book a lesson focusing on advanced carving or mogul technique. On Day 6, if conditions and safety allow, hire a local ski guide for an introduction to safe, accessible off-piste powder areas. Celebrate your achievements with a fantastic meal at the resort’s best restaurant.
Day 7: Farewell Carves (Half Day)
Enjoy a final morning of skiing, focusing on your favorite runs of the week. Purchase any last-minute souvenirs and have a celebratory hot chocolate or coffee on the slopes before checking out and heading to the airport, already planning your return trip.
