The Qilian Range stretches for hundreds of kilometers, like a natural Great Wall, separating the Tibetan Plateau from the Gobi Desert and China’s Loess Plateau. With peaks close to 6000 meters, it is an alpine wilderness where, if you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the “ghost cat”, the elusive Snow Leopard. Mount Huabao, with its five peaks that rise just shy of 4500 meters altitude, is located in the Southern Qilian Range. It is not very popular with tourists, and the secondary peaks are rarely climbed. The landscape changes from the base of the mountain, where forests and shrubbery are intersected by mountain streams, climbing higher to alpine meadows where yaks graze and wolves roam, and culminating in the highest points with glacial valleys and jagged ridges and peaks. There are no tourist paths, and information found on internet is minimal, making hiking on Mount Huabao a challenging orienteering experience, therefore a GPS backed by topo maps and a compass are essential. We started the ascent on the north side of the mountain, from a lake called Dashitan. The north side is much more demanding, with a 2500 meters relative altitude, but much more beautiful. The first part of the climb follows the course of a river that flows through an old glacial valley. On the first day we passed by a farm and climbed to 3800 meters altitude, where we set our camp for the night. A shroud of mist enveloped our tent just before we settled in, but later the sky cleared and we enjoyed a warm and pleasant night, the best I ever had at this altitude, nestled on a pass, between some rocks, with the high peaks on one side and deep valleys on the other, billions of stars and a brilliant Milky Way hanging above us. The next morning we left our camp behind and decided to do a light and fast ascent of one of the nameless high peaks. We followed a secondary ridge, avoiding the snow and rock avalanche prone glacial circles. The climb was a difficult scramble, but there was no need for technical gear and by noon we were enjoying the glorious view from 4449 meters altitude. The permanent ice and snow, that only decades ago covered the mountain year round, is now reduced to patches on the north faces. During the descent we had the chance to make some friends at 3000 meters altitude. They were a group of locals looking for Cordyceps Sinensis, colloquially called “caterpillar fungus” in English and Yartsa Gunbu in Tibetan, which literally translates as “summer grass, winter worm”. Reaching the base of the mountain we were invited to have lunch at the farm that we passed by on our way up, and again by the guard at the gate on the edge of the lake. Jiaoshan is better for a slow solo stroll. Take the ferry across the river; the island is so quiet you can hear birdsong. Maoshan in Jurong is a bit farther from the city, but the mountain’s temples and bamboo trails are charming. The red Danxia landform cliffs are especially photogenic in sunlight. On day two, go to Sanbai Mountain, the source of the Dong River. Youning Temple is on a hill, about a half-hour drive from Huzhu County. They’re uncrowded, shady, and affordable, each with its own way to keep cool. 01 Aksu | Xinjiang While others sweat it out in the Flaming Mountains, I shivered in the mysterious Tianshan Grand Canyon. The narrowest part of the canyon only fits sideways, so sunlight can’t reach inside. Cool air seeps through the cracks in the rock walls, making it much more comfortable than an air-conditioned room. ⏰ Best to visit before 10 AM. The slanting light hits the reddish-brown rock walls perfectly for photos without filters. After noon, the canyon gets crowded and the path can get blocked. 📍 About an hour by taxi from Kuqa city center. Carpool rides cost around 30 yuan per person. ⚠️ The canyon floor is covered in loose gravel and stones. Don’t wear flip-flops—you’ll likely get blisters. Bring sunscreen, but the real sun exposure is on the road outside the canyon. Haidong Guandi Archway, also known as Guandi Archway or Bagua Chuo Xie, is located on Gucheng Street in Ledu District, Haidong City, Qinghai Province. It is an ancient architectural relic built in the 22nd year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1592) and was listed as the second batch of provincial protected sites in Qinghai Province in 1957. This archway originally stood in front of the Guandi Temple, which has since been destroyed, leaving only this archway. Its carved beams, painted rafters, and layered dougong brackets showcase the high level of wooden architecture craftsmanship in northwest China during the Ming Dynasty. After multiple restorations (the most recent major one in 2019), it is currently well preserved. 🌈 Highlights: ✅ The archway faces south and features a unique three-tiered pavilion-style wooden structure, about 15 meters tall and 10 meters wide. It is supported by 6 vertical columns and 4 slanting columns, with 7 corner pavilions interlinked to form three stacked pavilions (four on the bottom, two in the middle, and one on top). Its delicate and unusual shape is praised as one of the "12 scenic spots of Ledu." ✅ The eaves under the archway use seven-step dougong brackets, combining the cantilever beam and through-beam construction techniques. It is an important relic for studying official-style architecture in northwest China during the Ming Dynasty. The horizontal beam bears the inscription "Bagua Chuo Xie." The sparrow braces are carved with traditional patterns such as cloud motifs and entwined lotus, and the column bases are decorated with lotus carvings, all finely crafted. ✅ On the main ridge of the archway sits a gourd-shaped treasure vase, with dragon-shaped roof beasts, hanging beasts, and lance beasts. To this day, Qutan Temple is the best-preserved Ming dynasty building in northwest China and is known as the "Little Palace of the Plateau." Approaching the temple, the Ming dynasty architecture, stone carvings, and exquisite large-scale colorful murals once again amazed me‼️ Qutan Temple, called "Zhuocang Lakang Guodandai" or "Zhuocang Duojieqiang" in Tibetan, means "Zhuocang Vajra Buddha Temple." It was founded in the 25th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming dynasty (1392) and is a Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist temple. The temple is famous for its precious relics and large-scale colorful murals. It was listed as a second batch national protected site in 1988. 🌈 Highlights: ✅ From overall design to construction techniques, Qutan Temple features typical Ming dynasty official style combined with local Han architectural styles from Gansu and Qinghai, closely resembling the Forbidden City in Beijing. Kids can dress in Tu costumes for photos and watch the “wheel autumn” performance that spins like a rainbow. 📍 Nearby, Youning Temple is tucked in a mountain valley with few visitors. ⏰ Visit the temple in the morning. Sunlight filters through prayer flags onto the stone steps. It’s so quiet you can hear the wind chimes. 🍜 At the park entrance stalls, buy freshly baked highland barley cakes. Crispy and sweet, kids often eat two at once. 🚄 From Xining, it’s a 20-minute high-speed train ride to Haidong, then a 30-minute taxi to the scenic area. 4️⃣ Yancheng | Jiangsu 🦌 Dafeng China Milu Deer Park is the most “confused” zoo I’ve seen. The park opens at 8:30 AM when there are few people and many deer. 📍 The deer feeding area is “Deer King Garden,” with dedicated feeding platforms for safety. ⚠️ The park is large. The air is filled with the scent of rice flowers. 🍜 At roadside stalls, try a bowl of sour soup beef noodles, tangy and appetizing. ⚠️ Maling River Canyon is slippery. Wear non-slip shoes. Kids get excited and scream when they see the waterfall. 🚄 There are buses from Xingyi city to Wanfenglin, and taxis take about 20 minutes. 7️⃣ Baoding | Hebei ⏰ Start the morning at Qingxi Mausoleum. It’s shaded by trees and flat, easy to push a stroller. 📍 In the afternoon, visit Yesanpo. Standing on the plank road, with ancient caves overhead and valley winds blowing at your back, you feel a real chill—not from fear, but genuine coolness. ⏰ After 4 PM, slanting light shines into the caves, revealing the details of the clay sculptures. There are fewer people then. Enter through the west gate, not the east, to avoid many steps and save your legs. For Wushan’s Water Curtain Cave, 🚄 there’s a direct shuttle from Tianshui South Station, about 1 hour. The waterfall is inside the cave, and the water splashes on your face, icy cold like natural air conditioning. ⚠️ The cave floor is slippery. Don’t wear flip-flops. Fuxi Temple is in the city. If you arrive late, you can only see it through the fence. 04 Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan If you don’t like crowds, skip the old town and head straight to Xizhou Ancient Town. 📍 At Sifang Street, Bai old houses have bougainvillea blooming on the walls. Turn into the alleys, and the oil frying sounds come alive. The sweet aroma of Xizhou baba (a local pastry) drifts out. ⏰ After 5 PM, the rice fields turn warm golden, shadows stretch long. Sit on the ridge, feel the Erhai breeze, and it won’t feel hot at all. You don’t have to enter Chongsheng Temple’s Three Pagodas. 📍 Walk 200 meters north from the scenic entrance, and a small path lets you photograph the pagodas reflected in the pond for free. 🍜 At night back in the old town, “Old Zhao’s” sour and spicy fish outside the south gate uses crucian carp from Erhai Lake.
