I personally tested 6 off-the-beaten-path routes and experienced a 3,000 RMB quality trip on a budget of 1,500 RMB.
Still confused about where to go in August? Don't go to Xiamen to see the crowds, and don't force the dumpling soup in Qingdao. I step over the line for you, these 6 places, cheap fares, few tourists, the scenery is still hard enough. There are mountains, sea and ancient villages. If the budget is pressed within 1500, you can play out the texture of 3000. Without further ado, let's get straight to the dry goods.
01 Shijiazhuang City | Hebei
Don't think there's no play when you hear about Shijiazhuang, that's because you didn't find the right way to open it. Don't go to the city during the day to force the museum, go straight to Zhaozhou Bridge. This bridge is no ordinary attraction, 1400-year-old stone, the bridge surface is ground to shine, you step on it can touch the pulp of time. Tickets are not expensive, and you can get half price with a student ID card. After walking around the bridge, you can eat a bowl of noodle soup in the next village. You can fill it up for $10. The soup is so fresh that your eyebrows will fall off.
In the afternoon, we will change to Xibaipo. Don't just take pictures, follow the explanation and walk around, and listen to how to strategize in this ravine.
⚠️ Note, the venue stops entering at 4pm, do not step on the spot.
🚄 Take a taxi from the city for about forty minutes, the average ride is thirty. When I go back to the city at night, I go to the alley behind the Le Tai Centre to eat skewers. Lamb skewers cost $3 a skewer, served with a local soda. This supper costs $50. For accommodation, choose Yuhua District Express Hotel, 150 per person, clean and hygienic, soundproofing is good.
02 Zhuzhou City|Hunan
Zhuzhou is an underrated industrial city, but you have to visit the Mausoleum of Emperor Yan. This place is in Yanling County, an hour and a half away by bus from the city, the ticket is twenty-five. The mausoleum area is huge, with towering ancient trees, and the air is filled with the smell of incense and grass. In the morning, first stroll around the main hall, then follow the trail to the back mountain of the stele forest, where there are so few people that you can hear your own footsteps.
🍜 At noon, eat a bowl of You County rice noodles at a small shop in front of the scenic spot. It has a spicy and sour appetizer. It costs 8 dollars.
Don't walk so fast in the afternoon, go for a walk around Shennong Valley National Forest Park, ticket 60, the waterfall cluster hidden in the forest, the water vapor, more comfortable than blowing air conditioning.
⚠️ Remember to wear non-slip shoes, the canyon is wet and slippery. This place is suitable for bringing parents here. The road is smooth and you won't get tired. Go back to the city at night, live near the train station, 120 per person, downstairs is the supper street, scallops and flavored shrimp sold by the portion, two people eat to support is 80 dollars.
03 Huangshan City | Anhui
You know Yellow Mountain for sure, but if you go in August, don't be stupid and just look at the top of the mountain. Let's go down to the ancient village of southern Anhui. You can choose between Xidi and Hongcun. I choose Hongcun. The painted bridge by the South Lake, go at 6 am, the fog has not dissipated, the water reflects the white-walled Daiwa, the picture is worth the price of admission.
🎫 Tickets 94, but inside can stroll all day, the alley in the hair tofu, plum dried vegetable roast cake, ten dollars can fill your mouth.
In the afternoon, go to Chengkan Gu Village, which is quieter than Hong Village and has half fewer tourists. The autumn sunbathing square in the village has red peppers and corn sunbathing in bamboo plaques, and the colors are so intense that it doesn’t look like it.
📍 There is an ancient bridge at the entrance of the village, the light at dusk is just right, the silhouette is beautiful. Stay at a B&B outside Hong Village at night, 180 per person, the boss will shower you with a drink at Maofeng on Huangshan Mountain, and talk until midnight.
If you have enough time, go to the Ancient Huizhou Cultural Tourism Area, which is the area of Huizhou Ancient City. Walking at the foot of the city wall is better than crowding people in Tuen Kai Old Street.
⚠️ If you drive, parking spaces in the village are tight, go early to occupy a seat.
04 Panjin City | Liaoning
August is at its reddest in Panjin’s Red Beach. Alkaline grass covered the beach, looking out from the canyon, it was like the earth had been splashed with buckets of paint. Tickets plus sightseeing car are 110 yuan. Don't be too expensive. Walk into the depths of the scenic spot. The red is strong enough.
⏰ After 4:30 pm the light is the softest, red by the sunset into golden red, mobile phone casual photos are wallpaper.
After seeing Red Beach, we took a boat ride to the reeds next door. The thirty-minute boat ride, the wind blew the reeds rustling, and occasionally scared a couple of egrets.
🍜 At noon, eat a plate of Jinhe crab at the farmhouse in front of the scenic spot. It is made in June yellow, forty-one, full of yellow fat, served with corn ball congee, fresh to the tongue. For accommodation, choose a hot spring hotel in Dakuo area, which costs 200 per person. Take a dip in the soup to relieve your fatigue, and your feet will not feel sore the next day.
⚠️ It's windy here, bring a thin jacket. Perfect for couples or photography enthusiasts, it’s no problem to take the elderly to the canyon.
05 Zhengzhou City | Henan
Zhengzhou as a transit station, don't leave so soon, leave a day for him. Morning visit to the museum, free but make an appointment in advance on WeChat. The bronzes, the treasures of the town pavilion, are frighteningly finely patterned, and when you look through the glass, you can imagine craftsmen from three thousand years ago pounding in the firelight. Stroll for two hours, come out on Agricultural Road, nearby there is a Fang Zhongshan Hu spicy soup, the headquarters, ten dollars a bowl, with oil buns, spicy to the forehead sweat, the whole body soothing.
Afternoon visit West Flow Lake, a local walk, with an open lake and shady willow trees. Rent a shared bike and ride around the lake, and when you’re tired, lie flat on the lawn and watch kites and clouds.
📍 There is a small hillside on the west side of the lake, which has excellent views of the sunset at dusk. At night, go to Qinweishui City, which is Zhengzhou's "Little Jiangnan". The antique buildings on both sides of the water system are illuminated and reflected in the water quite beautifully.
⚠️ Don't buy snacks in the scenic area, expensive and ordinary, walk ten minutes to the street outside, stewed noodles for 15 dollars a bowl, much more affordable.
Shaolin in Songshan is far from the city, so I have to be alone for a day. If time is tight, skip it without losing money. Accommodation choose near 27 Square, 130 per person, the subway is convenient to go anywhere.
06 Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture|Hubei
The summer in Enshi is naturally air-conditioned. Enshi Grand Canyon is the highlight, tickets plus cable car two hundred, but worth it. The canyon of the Yunlong Ground Seam is built against the wall, and at your feet is the roaring dark river, the water vapor rushing upwards, so cool that you get goosebumps. The cliff canyon of Qixingzhai, walking on it, the mountain breeze poured into the collar, the feet are a bit soft, but the mountains in front of you, like an ink painting come to life.
After seeing the mountains, go to Enshi Tusi City. The wooden building of Jiujin Hall, with intricate carvings, tells the history of Tujia. Tickets are 50, two hours of strolling is enough.
🍜 Eat in the city, 30 dollars a person's buffet, potato rice tube enough, smooth and tender, pork fragrant, let go.
If you want to play in the water, head to Enshi Qingjiang and take a cruise to see the cliffs and waterfalls on both banks, the water is turquoise and emerald.
⏰ The boat at 2pm is less crowded and can occupy a beautiful spot on the deck.
⚠️ The Grand Canyon has to climb a lot of stairs. If your knees are not good, don't force yourself. Prepare a walking stick.
Accommodation choose the city, 150 per person, go to the wind and rain bridge at night to blow the wind, eat barbecued fish, live fish immediately slaughtered, 51 catty, enough for two people to eat.
07 Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu
Summer is a place that is easily overlooked, but summers are cool and prices are low. In the Liujia Gorge Tourist Resort, the lake and the Yellow River meet, half green and half yellow, with clear boundaries. You stand on the observation deck and see that nature is quite good at painting. A speedboat cruise, eighty dollars, the wind howling in the ears, the water splashing in the face, refreshing.
In the afternoon, visit the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area, where the grottoes open on a steep cliff, the giant Buddha overlooks the Yellow River, and the thousand-year-old colored sculptures are still in color.
🚄 From Lau Ka Gorge, take the tourist bus, every half hour.
⚠️ Photography is prohibited in the cave. Don't steal photos. Just remember with your heart.
🍜 Back in the city at night, eat Dongxiang hand-caught lamb, eighty-one catty, fat and lean, some pepper and salt, with three bubble table, relieve thirst. Accommodation choose the old town area, 100 per person, downstairs is the night market, sweet fermented grains and stuffed skin five dollars a portion, sweet to the heart.
08 Yinchuan City | Ningxia
Yinchuan is cool in the morning and night, sunburned during the day, but dry and non-sticky. In the morning, we went to the rock paintings of Mount Helan to see the sun and sheep carved on the stone by our ancestors. The lines are rough, and you can still feel their heartbeat after thousands of years. There is a museum inside the scenic area. The explanations are free and worth listening to.
⏰ Arrive before 9am, the light slantly shines on the rock wall, the clearest pattern.
At noon, go to Lingwu Shuidonggou Tourist Area, which is the "birthplace of Chinese prehistoric archeology". Tickets include boat tickets and camel cars, 120, good value for money. 🐫 The camel ride, rocking, quite a sense of crossing the Western Regions.
In the afternoon, go to Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park, where the lotus flowers are in full bloom and the lake is full of pink and white.
🎫 Tickets forty, suitable for children, with children's play area.
Don’t miss the Western Xia Mausoleum either, the earthen mausoleum stands in the wilderness, desolate and mysterious. Renting an electric car and going around, the wind is blowing, and I think of the phrase "the ancient tombs are thick under the Halan Mountain".
⚠️ No shade here, hat and sunscreen essential.
🍜 Going to Huaiyuan Night Market at night, spicy paste and baked eggs are a must-eat, 30 per person can eat to the wall. Accommodation choose Xixia District, 120 per person, close to the scenic spot.
