I'm sharing my experience so you can avoid detours and pitfalls. 🏔 Trip highlights (I've personally visited each one multiple times) [Shizigou Pasture] Wilder than Guanshan Pasture. Cattle slowly cross the road, and you can lounge on the meadows. With the colorful forests in the distance, it's incredibly photogenic. [Taiziling Road] Not a scenic spot, but better than one—a must-drive. Clouds wrap around the mountain road, red leaves flow past the car windows, and the view opens up after a few bends. [Zibai Mountain] If you don't want to hike, take the cable car. The summit features scattered meadows and sinkholes. On clear days, you can see a sea of clouds—it feels ethereal. Hulunbuir Autumn in Hulunbuir is very short, but so vast it leaves you speechless. In mid-September, the grassland turns from emerald green to golden yellow. The harvested hay rolls are scattered across the boundless wilderness like giant Swiss rolls. The leaves of the birch forest are golden, the trunks are snow-white, and when the wind blows, the whole forest rustles. Standing on the high ground by the Morigele River, looking down at the ribbon-like river winding through the golden grassland, that feeling of desolation and freedom will make you realize that human worries are really nothing at all. Aba Autumn in Aba is a duet of snow-capped mountains and colorful forests. Driving on the Aba plateau, the 80-mile colorful forest gallery in Naizigou, Heishui County, lives up to its reputation. On the hillsides, coniferous and broad-leaved forests interweave in layers of deep red, orange, and dark green, with snow-capped mountains in the distance—the visual impact is incredibly strong. Autumn here carries the unique purity and crispness of the plateau. The sky is an unbelievable blue, and the sunlight hits directly. Although the wind is sharp, your heart feels burning hot. Every journey brings new rewards.

Until last weekend when I took my kid to Lover's Valley in Liuba, Hanzhong—the trees were green, the stream was clear, and the breeze smelled like pine. But Lover's Valley is simple: the kids play by themselves in the stream and woods, and the adults catch their breath in the shade. 📍What's this place actually like Liuba is north of Hanzhong, at the southern foot of the Qinling Mountains. Lover's Valley is tucked away in a mountain gully near Liuhou Town. It's not one of those artificial "influencer" parks; it's real mountains, real water, and a real forest. In the morning, mist floats over the trees, sunlight leaks through the leaves, and the ground is covered in dappled light. A stream runs through the valley; it's not deep—in summer, it just covers your ankles, and it's nice and cool. The first thing my kid said was, "Mom, this is like Peppa Pig jumping in muddy puddles!" 🐷💦 You don't need to explain facts or recite tour guide scripts; the kids just squat down to watch tadpoles, chase butterflies, pick up rocks, and build dams. 🚗How to get there without the hassle Driving from Xi'an is easiest: take the Ring Expressway → Jingkun Expressway → Liuba Exit. You'll arrive at the Lover's Valley parking lot after 10 AM. Parking is free, which is more generous than many other scenic spots. Families without a car can take the high-speed train to Hanzhong Station, then carpool/take a bus to Liuba county (about 1.5 hours), and then take a taxi to Lover's Valley (20 minutes). Don't make too many transfers; one transfer is enough to wear any mom out. 🎫How much does it cost Lover's Valley itself is free! Free! Free! (Important things said three times) Parking is free, and admission is free. The only things you'll spend money on are gas/transport, lunch, and snacks. Eat at a farmhouse restaurant in nearby Liuhou Town—cured meat with bamboo shoots, stewed chicken with mushrooms, stir-fried wild vegetables—it costs about 40–60 yuan per person. The kid can have rice with tomato and scrambled eggs, and the adults can have a good meal too. If you want to stay an extra day, stay in Liuba county. Homestays are 150–300 yuan a night. Pick one that "has parking + a yard to dry shoes and socks"—it's a hundred times more useful than an Instagram-style place 🏠 🧒What do the kids actually do (Here's the important part) ① Wading in the stream: Bring sandals! Bring a change of pants! Don't wear white sneakers or Crocs (they wash away easily). I put water shoes on my kid, and they were fine all afternoon 🩴 ② Building stone dams: There are lots of rocks in the stream. The kid moved rocks to build little dams and played for an hour without leaving—it's more addictive than LEGO ③ Treasure hunting in the woods: Pinecones, leaves, twigs. This was the retreat of Zhang Liang, one of the three heroes of the early Han, and features a group of 1,800-year-old ancient buildings. Next visit Lovers' Valley scenic area (pics 5–10), which has 500 mu of original larch forest, a wooden suspension bridge, streams, and a love-lock corridor, and is a natural oxygen-rich area. Then visit Shizigou alpine pasture (pics 1–4), where Milk Lake has emerald-green water, mountains surround the area, and cattle and sheep graze freely on the meadows. In the evening visit Liuba Old Street (pics 11–13), a 750-meter Qing and Ming dynasty stone-paved street with red lantern night views that are great for photos, plus artsy shops, tie-dye crafts, and farmhouse snacks. ✅Day2️⃣ Liuba town (breakfast)→Gaojiang Road, the most scenic country road→Huoshaodian rice paddy theme park→return to Xi'an ⭕ After breakfast, drive along Gaojiang Road, the most scenic country road, with forests and streams along the way where you can stop to take photos.
