Step into a 007 movie scene! Loket Castle, the most spectacular cliff castle in the Czech Republic, is a must-visit while touring the spa town.
Loket Castle (Hrad Loket) is located in Bohemia, Czech Republic, perched atop Gothic cliffs surrounded by the meandering Ohře River. "Loket" means "elbow" in Czech, named for the river's bend resembling an elbow.
Magnificent Castle Views and Legendary History:
12th-Century Royal Castle: Built in the 12th century, it was once the hunting lodge of Charles IV, King of Bohemia, who was imprisoned there during his childhood but also greatly cherished it.
Old Town Overlook and Tower Views: Situated at the highest point in the town, the castle offers a 360-meter panoramic view from its ancient 26-meter-high tower, overlooking the stunning Ohře River valley and the red-tiled town.
Special Exhibition Areas and Inside Highlights:
Dungeon and Torture Chamber: The castle's basement features a well-preserved medieval dungeon and torture exhibit, complete with realistic sound effects and dynamic models, recreating the historical atmosphere.
Legend of the Black Meteorite: The museum displays an ancient meteorite (Elbogen Meteorite) that fell in the castle courtyard in the 15th century. The great writer Goethe studied it and left records during his visit.
Fine Porcelain Museum: Exhibits a large collection of locally made 19th-century historical porcelain and exquisite handicrafts.
Film and Television Fame and Activities:
This location was one of the filming locations for the James Bond film *Casino Royale*, replacing the town of Montenegro in the movie.
The castle's outdoor courtyard and theater frequently host music festivals, medieval knight festivals, and open-air performances in the summer.
Travel Tips:
Just a 15-minute drive from Karlovy Vary, it's perfect for a half-day or full-day trip combined with a visit to the spa town. Many traditional Czech restaurants line the river around the castle, and strolling through the old town's alleyways is quite pleasant.

Loket Castle: A Medieval Fairytale in the Bend of a River
🏰 Loket, meaning "Elbow" in Czech, derives its name from the Ohře River, which curves around the castle rock like a bent arm. This picturesque location is one of the most atmospheric spots in the Czech Republic, so much so that it was featured as a filming location for James Bond's Casino Royale.
⭐️Must-See Highlights:
· Tower View: Ascend the 26-meter tower for a stunning view of red-tiled roofs and the surrounding lush forests.
· Torture Exhibition: Situated in the castle dungeons, this realistic display includes moving figures and sound effects—an impressive but chilling experience.

· Porcelain and Meteorites: The castle boasts a rich collection of rare porcelain and a meteorite that fell here in 1422, studied by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
⭐️Tips:
· Dining: After exploring, visit the Svatý Florian family brewery at the castle's base. Sample their smoked beer and the renowned piglet roasted in a traditional underground oven.
· Transportation: Easily accessible via a 15–20 minute bus or train ride from Karlovy Vary.
· Photography: For the best shot, cross the bridge to the opposite side of the Ohře River for a wide-angle view of the castle perched on the cliff.

Loket - magical town just two hours from Prague
Loket is a beautiful town situated just two hours away from the centre of Prague and a simple coach ride away. It is picturesque and well worth a visit especially if you are going to visit the spa town, Karlovy Vary. Full of character, nice architecture, food, views and art galleries. Wish we had time to visit the castle but we took many photos of the castle and stunning surrounding areas. #myhiddengems #czechrepublic
