Especially in April and May, when wildflowers bloom across the mountains, it's an ideal choice for a spring hike. It's also a photographer's paradise. If you want to see the Great Wall when you go to Beijing I highly recommend going to Simatai. This part of the wall is 2 hours drive north east of the city is one of the quieter parts of the wall, a great place for those on their first visit. And there are organised tours leaving every day from various pick up points. I booked a day trip with trip and found it the best way to take on the wall, leaving Beijing at 8:50 am and returning by 9:30PM. Leaving from Guomao metro station in east Beijing The tour takes you to the famous Gubei water town at the base of the wall. Tickets to enter the wall cost around £16 and then you need to purchase tickets for the cable car for £20. You’re able to walk to the wall from the entrance but it takes around 45 minutes and the path is very uneven! I wouldn’t recommend it even for those who are full able, save the energy for the wall! Once on the wall you can walk between 10 of the watch towers with varying levels of condition - this part of the wall hasn’t been as well refurbished as others so it’s a more authentic experience! It takes around 1.5 hours to walk from one end to the other and it does have many steep slopes with ladders and steep steps! But the middle four towers are more accessible. You get amazing views out over the town below and the wall. This is something I will remember forever and highly recommend it to all people visiting Beijing! And you can head up in the evening too! About a 2-hour drive from downtown Beijing, making it a perfect weekend getaway destination. 🗺️ Four selected routes (from leisurely to hardcore, choose as you like) Don’t worry about not knowing where to go—I’ve personally tested and organized four clear routes for you to "copy" based on your stamina. 1️⃣ Classic Experience Route (about 2 hours) * Route: Scenic area middle gate → trail to Zhuanduo Pass (climb the Great Wall) → hike the Great Wall to Shaling Pass → trail back to middle gate. * Suitable for: Visitors with limited time who just want to easily experience the Great Wall’s charm. This is the most classic section, with majestic watchtowers and excellent views. 2️⃣ Photography Scenic Route (about 2.5 hours) * Route: Scenic area middle gate → trail to Zhuanduo Pass → hike toward Xiaojinshan Tower → descend by Xiaojinshan cable car to return. * Suitable for: Photography enthusiasts and those wanting to save energy. The Xiaojinshan Tower area is a golden spot for photos, and the cable car descent is easy while offering a high-altitude perspective of the Great Wall. 3️⃣ Deep Three Wonders Route (about 4 hours) * Route: Scenic area middle gate → trail to Zhuanduo Pass → hike toward Dongwuyan Tower (this section features the "Three Wonders of the Great Wall": parapet walls, inscribed bricks, and qilin spirit screens) → trail to scenic area east gate → shuttle bus back to middle gate. * Suitable for: Moderate stamina travelers who want to see more highlights and unique architecture in depth. 4️⃣ Hardcore Fitness Route (about 4 hours) * Route: Scenic area west gate → mountain trail to Taochun Pass (climb the Great Wall) → reverse hike the Great Wall to Zhuanduo Pass → trail down to middle gate → shuttle bus back to west gate. * Suitable for: Hiking lovers and "hardcore" challengers. This route has a longer uphill section and offers a more intense climbing experience. My choice: I took a "custom" route, hiking from the middle gate to Zhuanduo Pass, passing Shaling Pass, Xiaojinshan Tower, and Houchuankou, taking 4.5 hours on foot. Though tiring, when I saw the sea of clouds rolling between the mountains through a watchtower window, it was all worth it! There are many entrances and exits along the Great Wall here, so you can freely combine routes. 💡 Tips to make your Great Wall trip perfect 1. Best season: Autumn (late September to late October) is the golden time. The forests are colorful, and the climate is most comfortable. I visited in early September when autumn was just beginning, and it was already stunning. 2. Wearing the right shoes is crucial: The Great Wall’s surface is made of ancient bricks and steep steps, so wear non-slip, supportive hiking or sports shoes. Comfort directly affects your experience. 3. Photography gear advice: Wide-angle phone shots capture the grand scenes well. But if you want to capture the texture and depth of history, I strongly recommend bringing a telephoto lens. Every watchtower window is a natural frame. 4. Travel light and bring enough supplies: Carry enough water and some high-energy snacks. There are few vending points on the Wall, and they are far apart. Sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker (it’s windy on the mountain) are also essential. 5. Transportation and timing: Just navigate to "Jinshanling Great Wall" by car. It’s best to start early in the morning when the light is good and the crowds are minimal, so you can enjoy the most peaceful time. Returning in the afternoon helps avoid traffic jams. Standing on the open wall, running your hand over the weathered bricks, looking at the distant mountains like ink paintings and the forests turning colors. At that moment, you no longer hear the noise of tourists, but the wind, birdsong, and the whispers of history flowing through time.
