I made one mistake... I completely underestimated how big Puglia is!
There are so many beautiful towns to visit, both along the coast and inland. You can easily split the region into three different areas, and that’s a lot to cover. In one week, these are all the places I managed to visit.
It’s true that some of these towns only need half a day because they’re quite small, but it really depends on how you like to travel. I naturally travel at a faster pace because I like seeing as much as I can. That said, I also think it makes perfect sense to choose fewer places and enjoy them more slowly.
My main base was Polignano a Mare, but I also spent one night in Matera and one in Vieste. Matera is close enough to visit as a day trip from Bari or Polignano, but I’m so glad I stayed overnight. Sleeping in a cave hotel and waking up to the most incredible views over the Sassi was one of the highlights of the trip 🤩
Gargano was the part of the trip I really didn’t want to miss. I spent two full days there, but honestly, I could have easily stayed four or five. There’s so much to explore, from the beaches and sea caves to the different towns and the national park.
The next time I’m in Puglia, I’d love to explore the south around Lecce. I enjoyed this region so much that I already know I’ll be back one day.
Hopefully this gives you a bit of inspiration while planning your own itinerary. Which of these places would you visit first? 💛

Tremiti islands - the Arcipelago
The Arcipelago of Tremiti is an unbelievable place in the middle of the Adriatic sea in Italy.
It is Part of Gargano National Park.
The archipelago is composed of 5 islands: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio, and Pianosa.
People here use to say:
San Domino and San Nicola part of Tremiti paradise
Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa, three deserted Tremiti Islands
Here some quick points about each island:
San Domino, larger, with a beautiful coast, on which the main tourist structures are located also thanks to the presence of the only sandy beach of the archipelago (Cala delle Arene).
San Nicola, the main landing point, where the main monuments of the archipelago are located.
Capraia (also called Caprara or Capperaia), uninhabited, which offers fascinating coves.
Pianosa, a rocky plateau which is also completely uninhabited and about twenty kilometers away from the other islands.
The Tremiti Islands can be reached by ferry or helicopter. Depending on the time of year, it is possible to travel to the archipelago from Puglia (from the ports of Vieste, Rodi Garganico, Peschici, and Manfredonia) and from the port of Termoli in Molise.
This site is an important tourist attraction nowadays due to the clear and turquoise sea waters and its lush vegetation.
The islands were used as a penal colony since the Iron Age passing by Romans with Emperor Augustus who had exiled his granddaughter, Julia the Younger, to the Tremiti on charges of adultery, until the Fascist Regime when Mussolini had hundreds of homosexuals deported to the internment camp of San Domino, fortunately, closed after one year in 1939.
In spring and summer several ferries depart from the port of Vieste, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours. It is also possible to reach the Tremiti islands from Rodi Garganico (minor route) or even from the ports of Peschici and Manfredonia.
It is possible to buy tickets for the ferries to the Tremiti islands directly on this site, by entering the place and date of departure.
You literally fall in love with this arcipelago
